Apple’s first retail store in San Francisco will open on Union Square at One Stockton Street on February 28, just two days before the March 1-3 PhotoshopWorld Conference & Expo in the nearby Moscone Center. PhotoshopWorld officials plan to capitalize on the convenience of the two dates with a special offer: buy an item from the new Union Square store and you’ll receive US$100 off the PhotoshopWorld conference registration price — or free admission to the expo hall.

CD offers drum loops for GarageBand

Drums On Demand has released its Vol. 1 loop CD in Apple Loops format for use with Apple’s GarageBand component of the iLife ’04 suite. The collection includes almost 900 live, acoustic drum loops organized into 41 “song sets” designed to help users put together a drum track. MP3 examples of all 41 Song Sets are available online. The CD has a suggested retail price of US$49.95.

FWB to carry Disk Jockey tool

FWB Software is teaming up with Diskology to sell Diskology’s Disk Jockey hardware via FWB’s Web site. Disk Jockey is a US$349.95 hard disk copy and diagnostic tool that lets you clone ATA hard drives. It can also be used to mirror data between two hard drives, span two drives as one logical volume, test hard drives at the block level, and verify that data that has been copied between drives remains intact. Plus, it mounts hard drives to the desktop of a Mac or Windows system and securely erases hard drives.

Jobs a ‘WIRED Renegade of the Year’ nominee

Steve Jobs, CEO of both Apple and Pixar, is a nominee for “Wired Renegade of the Year” in the latest Wired Rave Awards. The honor goes to “the person who had the most significant cultural impact in the wired world in 2003.” Other nominees for “Renegade of the Year” are: aerospace maverick Burt Rutan; Linus Torvalds, Open Source Development Lab Fellow; Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis of Skype, a company that develops free software for making free Internet phone calls.
