Google plans to release a version of Google Desktop for Macs, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said on Friday. Schmidt did not set a timetable for a Mac version of the tool, saying it had to be rebuilt from the ground up for Mac OS X. Google Desktop for Windows currently lets you “find your email, files, web history and chats instantly; view web pages you’ve seen, even when you’re not online; and search as easily as you do on Google.” One of the main features in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) will be Spotlight, Apple’s new “lightning fast” way to find any file, document or information created by any application. The technology “enables users to instantly find just about anything — including emails, presentations, images, appointments and Microsoft Office documents — then automatically organizes and displays the results by kind, time or people.”
