BusinessWeek has published edited excerpts of an interview with Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice-president for worldwide product marketing, in which he discusses the new iTunes Music Store. When asked what it will take to make the store profitable, he responded: “We’re not looking at it in terms of a stand-alone business. It’s part of all the things we’re doing at Apple. And first of all, I hope it can drive more iPod business. That has been very successful for us, and we would like to see that continue to grow. In addition, it’s part of the whole digital-life strategy, and it has been very successful for us. iTunes has become the most popular application used by Mac customers — more popular than mail or word processing. To date, we have distributed 20 million copies.”
