Alien Technology has released Proteus 1.5, a new version of its multi-service instant messaging client for Mac OS X. The application supports all major instant messaging services and, among its features, interaction via the Dock and support for broadcasting conversations to multiple parties across various services. Alien has also released the basic source code for the Cocoa application, encouraging developers to add instant messaging capabilities to their own applications.

Apple has released DVD Player 3.1.1 for Mac OS X via the Software Update control panel, although the software’s product description reads the same as that of the DVD Player 3.1 update released one week ago.

Sun Microsystems has filed a private antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft, reportedly seeking upwards of US$1 billion in damages, according to Dow Jones. The suit alleges that Microsoft engaged in “extensive” anticompetitive practices with adverse affects against Sun and its Java programming language. Six week ago, America Online filed a similar suit against Microsoft regarding its Netscape Web browser; Be, Inc. has also filed suit against Microsoft. Brigadoon Software has released PC PhoneHome Pro for Mac OS 8/9 and Mac OS X, stealth software that tracks the location of a missing laptop or desktop computer by secretly sending a signal to a pre-determined e-mail address with the exact location of the registrant’s computer. PC PhoneHome Pro sells for US$29.95.
