Apple Europe has kicked off a new promotion titled “Peace of mind” that offers substantial savings with the purchase of a new Power Mac G4, 17-inch Studio Display, and a three-year AppleCare Protection Plan, as noted by Macworld UK. Savings vary from country to country. The promotion is not being offered in North America.

RealNetworks today introduced RealVideo 9, the latest version of its Internet video streaming solution that delivers a 30 percent reduction in bandwidth compared to version 8. Real claims that the new system delivers data comparable in quality to the Apple-backed MPEG-4 format, which Real also supports, at half the bit-rate, allowing VHS quality video to be streamed at 160Kbps and DVD quality video at 500Kbps.

As the telecommunications industry continues to falter, broadband connectivity across traditional power lines is beginning to gain momentum, according to The Washington Post. While the task of moving data through electrical lines is challenging, results so far from companies working in the field show speeds comparable to or greater than cable modem and DSL connections. Additionally, virtually anyone who has electricity would be eligible for the service.

As in previous years, Intuit is looking for beta testers for the next version of Quicken for Mac, as noted by MacCentral. Those interested in evaluating Quicken 2003 and sending feedback to Intuit are asked to complete a survey to determine eligibility.
