The folks at OSXFAQ, a site devoted to helping users get more out of Mac OS X, have launched a new content area which will delve into the world of Unix on a Mac. “The Mac OS X Unix Learning Center’s” first lesson, “Advanced Mac OS X Unix,” offers training in Users, Groups, and Permissions, an area that causes consternation among many Mac users.

Apple has posted WebObjects 5.1.3, a maintenance update to its Web development software.

Eovia today began shipping Carrara Studio 2, a major upgrade to its 3D design application. Among the features in version 2 are Photon Mapping rendering, bones and skinning for character animation, and subdivision modeling. Carrara Studio 2 is compatible with Mac OS X 8.1 and later and is Mac OS X native. The software sells for US$399; upgrades are $149.

Lexmark has released new Mac OS X Drivers & Tools, which support dozens of printers, as noted by VersionTracker.

An article in The Chronicle For Higher Education details Dartmouth College’s switch to a Windows environment, as noted by MacSurfer. In 1998, 80 percent of incoming Freshman bought Macs at the school, while today 80 percent are buying Windows-based systems. Some analysts also believe that Apple’s market share in higher education has dropped from 30 percent in the 90s to less than 10 percent today.
