Olympus and Fujifilm today announced the xD-Picture Card, a new type of memory media with an ultra-compact design, jointly developed by both companies. The memory card is about the size of a postage stamp, offers storage capacities up to 8GB, features compatibility with different digital camera brands, and is priced comparably to current SmartMedia cards.

EarthLink today announced its second-quarter loss was smaller than the same period last year, while revenue rose due to its growing broadband subscriber base. EarthLink reported a net loss of US$40.4 million, or 27 cents a share, compared with a loss of $98.7 million, or 75 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 10.4 percent to $333.5 million. The company said it added 72,000 new high-speed subscribers during the quarter, ending with 604,000 broadband customers.

RealNetworks recently announced its new Helix open-source project and c|net has published an article by Paul Festa comparing the move to similar development efforts in recent memory. “…among the three major streaming media competitors, Apple Computer was the first to make the leap to open source–a move that also offers something of a cautionary tale for the curative powers of such efforts,” notes the story.

Gideon Softworks has released Dock-It 1.2, a multifunctional launcher and Finder enhancer for Mac OS X. Dock-It offers the ability to create multiple docks on your desktop and fill them with files, folders, and much more. Version 1.2 includes several bug fixes and a few feature refinements. Dock-It is US$15 shareware.
