Apple has officially launched a PowerBook G4 promotion that awards new purchasers with a free VST FireWire CD-RW drive, following MacUser UK’s report on the promotion yesterday.

Jim Heid of the Los Angeles Times has written a positive review of Apple’s new iBook, saying: “After spending thousands of coach-class miles and several days on the road with the new iBook, I have only a few minor criticisms. And I have a new favorite laptop.”

A new report shows that Sony’s MemoryStick holds 25 percent of the removable flash-memory market, up 7 percent from the year ago. Meanwhile, CompactFlash has slipped from 51 percent to 40 percent, while SmartMedia has fallen from 41 percent to 32 percent.
