Apple is organizing a media event next week that will be used to usher in a new “breakthrough digital device,” according to the invitation to the event that will take place on October 23 at 10:00 PT. C|net sources suggest the device will be related to digital music; Apple declined comment. The invitation also notes: “Hint: It’s not a Mac.”

Econ Technologies has announced Portraits & Prints, an affordable Mac OS X “personal photo studio.” Portraits & Prints allows users to import photos; perform basic modification, including red-eye reduction; and then arrange snapshots for printing in a variety of mediums, including portraits or greeting cards. Portraits & Prints will be available on October 31 for US$19.95.

The Mac Show, an Internet-based live radio show focusing on all things Mac, has announced their guest lineup for tonight’s broadcast (9:00-11:00 pm ET). Tonight’s guests include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; A.G. Edwards analyst, Brett Miller, to discuss Apple’s earnings; and Bob “Dr. Mac” Levitus offering Mac OS X tips.

Bare Bones Software has announced BBEdit 6.5, a significant upgrade to its popular text editor. The new version adds countless improvements, including integrated Unix scripting systems that allows Perl, Python, and Unix shell scripts from within BBEdit; syntax coloring for Objective-C; markup support for CSS; improved support for PHP4; new regular expression matching with the PCRE engine; enhancements to file filtering in multi-file searches; and several more.
