Along with Apple’s new Snap It Up promotion that offers a US$150 rebate or free digital camera with the purchase of a 600/700MHz update (see today’s 09:00 news item), Apple today kicked off a new promotion for Pro customers.

FirewireDirect today began shipping the Epic-DS FireWire RAID, a FireWire storage cluster with over a terabyte (1000GB) of storage. The system features Oxford 911 chips and boasts read speeds of up to 47MB/sec and write speeds of up to 38MB/sec. The Epic-DS is available now for US$5,389.

Microsoft has disabled the functionality that allowed Hotmail users to check their mail with Microsoft Entourage or Outlook Express. In an effort to bolster Hotmail’s security, users must now check their mail through the Hotmail Web site. Hotmail folders may disappear from the email client in the process.

Deneba today announced DenebaShare 1.0, a new application that allows a user to easily set up and serve photos from their own computer for friends and family to view over the Web. As the software uses the computer’s Internet connection, it’s best suited for those on broadband connections. Features include easy creation of thumbnail pages, password protection of photos, and encryption.

OpenOSX has begun shipping Grass GIS Pre2 for Mac OS X, which it says “has been in development for twenty years and is considered by many to be the most complete and sophisticated open-source GIS available.” The CD fully installs and configures the software, and is available for US$30, with a 6-month CD subscription costing $80.
