id Software has released Return to Castle Wolfenstein Multiplayer Test 2 for Mac OS X. Developed by Gray Matter Interactive and Nerve Software, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a 3D first-person shooter that puts players in the center of the Axis and Allied powers in World War II. The test version is primarily designed to test and tweak the game’s networking code, although thousands of players have taken advantage of the free test version to get a taste of the unreleased game.

Totally Hip Software has announced a new promotion that offers Mac OS X users its QuickTime authoring products—HipFlics 1.1, LiveSlideShow 2.0, and LiveStage Professional 3.0—for US$899.95, a $150 savings compared to purchasing the products individually.

This week’s Byte of the Apple column for BusinessWeek Online examines the value of Mac OS X, concluding that the operating system’s US$130 price of admission is worth it. Writer Charles Haddad notes that he hasn’t crashed using Mac OS X in eight months, and says that the “Cocoa shareware” applications are his favorite part of Mac OS X.

PC Magazine has published a review of Apple’s iPod, awarding the device a four-out-of-five rating. “Leave it to Apple, maker of some of the world’s sleekest computers, to come out with the world’s coolest MP3 player,” begins the review, concluding with, “the pricing is at the extreme high end for an MP3 player, but this is a tremendously good product.”

VersionTracker notes the release of Adobe SVG Viewer 3.0, a final version of its Web browser plug-in for viewing Web content that uses the open-source Scalable Vector Graphics format.
