PKWARE, Inc. has released APPNOTE.TXT version 4.5, its documentation for ZIP vendors and developers describing the latest .ZIP file compression format. The new format eliminates the former limitations of 4GB file sizes with no more than 65,000 files—the size and amount of files contained in a .ZIP archive is now only limited by the amount of storage space available. Aladdin Systems, maker of the popular Stuffit compression products, has committed its full support for the new format and plans to implement support for the new version in upcoming releases.
