Proxim has announced its new Harmony Fast 802.11a product line, which doubles the speed of 802.11a networking to 108Mbps (although real-world performance is about one-third of that). The higher speed is only achieved when Harmony Fast products are used in conjunction with each other, otherwise they operate at the standard speed of 54Mbps. The product line will consist of a US$249 PC card and a $695 base station, with a dedicated PCI card also in the works. Proxim plans to have OS X drivers for its Harmony Fast products by the end of the year, with Mac OS 9 drivers expected around the end of the first quarter of 2002, according to The Register.
