Both LaCie and FireWire Direct today introduced new FireWire hard drives based on Oxford’s 911 chip, which supports transfer speeds of up to 35MB/sec — roughly double the speed of previous generation FireWire drives. FireWire Direct’s Ultra II drives are available in the following capacities and prices: 20GB/7200RPM (US$199), 40GB/5400RPM ($199), 40GB/7200RPM ($239), 60GB/7200RPM ($299), 75GB/7200RPM ($369), 80GB/7200RPM ($359). LaCie’s SE2100 drives, all of which are 7200RPM, are available at these capacities and prices: 20GB ($229), 40GB ($279), 60GB ($329), 75GB ($429).
