Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) today said Microsoft should make Windows XP more open to rival software as part of the pending antitrust settlement. Schumer announced today at a press conference that the government should prevent Microsoft from releasing Windows XP in October unless the company made it more open to rival software, such as Kodak’s photo imaging application and AOL’s Instant Messenger. At present, Windows XP is slated to ship with a number of Microsoft-proprietary applications installed by default, similar to what the company has done with Internet Explorer to win the browser wars.
