Apple updates macOS, iOS, watchOS, tvOS
Apple has released updates to macOS, iOS, watchOS and tvOS that resolves an issue of crashing when an Indian language character is received by certain messaging apps. The bug causes causes app and system crashing on iPhones, iPads, and Macs due to a specific letter in the Indian language Telugu. This behavior extends to virtually any system text field on iOS and macOS, resulting in many third-party apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger being affected, as well. macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 is available at the Mac App Store via the Updates tab. You can download iOS 11.2.6 by navigating to the Software Update section of the Settings app on your iPhone and iPad. watchOS 4.2.3 can...

QuickerTek announces 12TB hard drive storage upgrade for Apple’s...
QuickerTek has announced new 5TB and 12TB hard drive upgrades (https://tinyurl.com/y8omjyrz) for the Apple AC AirPort Time Capsule — which provides only 2TB to 3TB of storage alone. By request, 6 9dBi high performance antennas can also be added to the unit for a boost in wireless power, effectively a three-fold increase in the range of the Time Capsule. To complete this upgrade, QuickerTek first opens the chassis and removes the existing hard drive. Once this is done, either the 5TB or 12TB hard drive is slid into the empty space and plugged into the internal board. The antenna upgrade not only offers dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz Wi-Fi, but it also triples the range of the Time Capsule. The improved wireless power allows users the ability to arrange and use their Apple wireless anywhere they choose by providing a wider range and blasting through common line of sight objects. The standard Apple AirPort Time Capsule doesn’t have a built-in port to connect these antennas. So,...

Apple’s first store in South Korea opens Saturday
Apple Garosugil, the company’s first store in South Korea, will open in Seoul on Saturday at 10 a.m. South of the Han River, in the heart of the Gangnam area, the store’s 25-foot glass facade invites visitors in from the tree-lined street, where interior trees mirror those outside, blurring the lines between the street and store. It also sports a dynamic 6K video wall. “We’re thrilled to open a new home for our customers in the vibrant city of Seoul and we look forward to continuing to grow in Korea,” said Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail, in a press announcement. “Our stores are gathering places for the community where everyone is welcome to connect, learn and create.” Led by Creative Pros, who are experts in the arts, the sessions bring the community together in the heart of the store — the Forum, with a Anyone can begin by taking a 30-minute Quick Start session, go further with experiential Photo Walks or attend a session for entrepreneurs, such as How to...

Rogue Amoeba announces Farrago sound app for the Mac
Rogue Amoeba has announced Farrago, a new soundboard app for the Mac. It allows performers to quickly play sound bites, audio effects, and music clips. The folks at Rogue Amoeba say that fast triggering via keyboard or mouse is coupled with robust playback options including fades, adjustable in/out points, and more. Audio management is handed via the tile-based interface. The tile layout can be adjusted thanks to the “limitless number of sets allow grouping in any way imaginable.” Podcasters can use Farrago to include musical accompaniment and sound effects during recording sessions, while theater techs can run the audio for live shows. What’s more, podcasters can use Farrago in conjunction with Rogue Amoeba’s audio routing tool Loopback and their audio recorder Audio Hijack. Farrago requires macOS 10.10 or higher. A demo is available for download (https://rogueamoeba.com/farrago/). The unrestricted full version of the software is regularly priced at $49. For a limited time, however...

Apple announces ‘effortless solution’ bringing health records to...
Apple has introduced what it says is a “significant update” to the Health app with the iOS 11.3 beta, debuting a feature for customers to see their medical records right on their iPhone. The updated Health Records section within the Health app brings together hospitals, clinics and the existing Health app to make it easy for consumers to see their available medical data from multiple providers whenever they choose. Johns Hopkins Medicine, Cedars-Sinai, Penn Medicine and other participating hospitals and clinics are among the first to make this beta feature available to their patients. In the past, patients’ medical records were held in multiple locations, requiring patients to log into each care provider’s website and piece together the information manually. Apple COO Jeff Williams says Apple worked with the healthcare community to take a consumer-friendly approach, creating Health Records based on FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), a standard for transferring...

Apple previews iOS 11.3
Apple says that iOS 11.3 will arrive this spring with “exciting new ways to experience augmented reality on iPhone and iPad, new Animoji on iPhone X and the ability to view health records in the Health app. Along with iOS 11.3, the tech giant has rolled out ARKit 1.5 to developers to provide even more immersive AR experiences. In addition to horizontal surfaces like tables and chairs, ARKit can now recognize and place virtual objects on vertical surfaces like walls and doors, and can more accurately map irregularly shaped surfaces like circular tables. Using advanced computer vision techniques to find and recognize the position of 2D images such as signs, posters, and artwork, ARKit can integrate these real world images into AR experiences such as filling a museum with interactive exhibits or bringing a movie poster to life. The view of the real world through the camera now has 50% greater resolution and supports auto-focus for an even sharper perspective. Apple says Animoji have...
