Analyst: iTunes Match a break-even service from Apple
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Piper Jaffray notes that Apple's iTunes Match service isn't expected to be hugely profitable for the company, but is an important service that will further tie customers into the iTunes ecosystem and Apple's hardware. With iTunes Match, even songs you’ve imported from CDs can be stored in Apple's iCloud. And you can play them on any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. According to Apple, here’s how it works: "iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud for you to listen to anytime, on any device. Since there are more than 20 million songs in the iTunes Store, chances are, your music is already in iCloud. And for the few songs that aren’t, iTunes has to upload only what it can’t match. Which is much faster than starting from scratch. Once your music is in iCloud, you can stream and store it to any of...

(The iPhone 4S wasn't specifically accused in the Dutch case.) On Dec.16 a court in Milan, Italy will hold a second hearing on another Samsung bid to ban the iPhone 4S. The outcome of the French case will likely be taken note of by the Italian court, notes "FOSS Patents."

Apple laptop component factory still shut down
Chinese authorities are still inspecting a factory that produces aluminum casings for MacBook laptops, following residents' complaints of unbearable odors coming from the facility, according to "InfoWorld" (http://macte.ch/tzuWv). (By MacBooks, I'm assuming this is both the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air line.) Apple's MacBook inventories, however, appear so far to be unaffected by the factory's temporary shutdown, Helen Chiang, an analyst with research firm IDC, told the publication. In mid-October, Taiwan-based Catcher Technology announced that it had stopped production at its factory in Suzhou, China. Authorities have since been inspecting the factory to ensure its manufacturing processes will not emit any strong odors that will affect nearby residents. Chiang told "InfoWorld" that Apple appears to have mitigated the effect of the factory's outage as it shifted production to another supplier. -- Dennis Sellers
