Analyst: Mac, iPhone sales exceeding expectations for holiday...
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Sterne Agree analyst Shaw Wu says holiday Mac and iPhone sales are ahead of expectations, though iPad sales a little "light." The analyst says indications from Apple's supply chain have led him to raise his projected Mac sales from 5 million to 5.2 million. Wu says the MacBook Air in particular is a big seller. Wu says his checks within the company's global supply chain found that iPhone momentum has been strong across the board, with strong sales of the iPhone 4S, as well as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. He's raised his forecast for iPhone sales for Apple's current quarter from 26 million to 28 million. On the slightly downside, Wu says iPad shipments seem to be "a little light" in the current quarter; he's reduced projected sales from 15 million to 13.5 million. Why? Wu says the Kindle Fire is proving a serious iPad competitor and also because some consumers are choosing a more full-featured...

AT&T expects record smartphone sales in fourth quarter
John Stephens, AT&T senior executive vice president and chief financial officer, says the company is on track to break its single-quarter record for smartphone sales. Speaking at the UBS 39th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference in New York, Stephens said that AT&T sold about six million smartphones in the first two months of the fourth quarter. Because December is traditionally one of the strongest sales months, AT&T now expects to break the previous single-quarter smartphone record of 6.1 million. AT&T’s strong smartphone sales in part reflect a higher number of handset upgrades from customers who were waiting for the launch of a new iPhone. AT&T previously announced that it activated more than one million iPhone 4S’ in the first five days the device was available. AT&T said iPhone 4S sales remain strong.

New DevilRobber trojan pops up
Intego’s (http://www.intego.com) malware researchers have found a new variant of the DevilRobber Trojan horse, which they first discovered in October. The latest variant -- DevilRobber.D -- has been spotted in three Mac applications distributed via BitTorrent trackers. The applications in question are Writer’s Café, EvoCam and Twitterrific, says Intego. The security software specialist says it's important to note that the original applications, obtained from the developers’ web sites, aren't infected, but that malicious users distribute infected versions via BitTorrent trackers. If you use these applications, and have purchased them from the developers, you have nothing to worry about, says Intego. The company's VirusBarrier X6 protects against this Trojan horse. Intego updated its malware definitions to recognize this malware, but the existing malware definitions, for previous variants, already blocked it.

Intel, Micron announcement may mean beefier iOS drives
Intel and Micron say they've started mass production of the world’s first 20 nm, 128GB, multi-level cell flash memory storage device. I'd expect the iPad 3, which should arrive sometime next spring, to have a 128GB hard drive. Perhaps the iPhone 5, as well. Developed through Intel and Micron's joint-development venture, IM Flash Technologies (IMFT), the new 20nm monolithic 128GB device is the first in the industry to enable a terabit (TB) of data storage in a fingertip-size package by using just eight die. It also provides twice the storage capacity and performance of the companies' existing 20nm 64GB NAND device. The 128GB device meets the high-speed ONFI 3.0 specification to achieve speeds of 333 megatransfers per second (MT/s), providing customers with a more cost-effective solid-state storage solution for today's slim, sleek product designs, including tablets, smartphones and high-capacity solid-state drives (SSDs.) Companies have long term plans to invest in data centers
A new survey conducted by CoreNet Global and Newmark Knight Frank shows that despite increases in cloud computing, 50% of companies are investing and planning over the long term to build or expand data centers that they manage as a corporate entity.  (Apple opened a 500,000-square-foot data center in Maiden, N.C., earlier this year.) The survey pointed out that companies are most concerned with risk management and business continuity when deciding where to locate their data centers. One result is a preference for most companies to maintain management of data center operations internally, and not to outsource the function. "Data centers are the digital-age equivalent of the engine room driving today's globally networked corporate enterprise," observes Bryan Loewen, senior managing director, Data Centers, for Newmark Knight Frank Global Corporate Services. "The reliable, secure, continuous and efficient operation of data centers has thus become a function vital to the profitability of...
