Apple fighting in-app purchasing flaw
Apple is taking steps to limit the impact of a flaw in its iOS in-app purchasing mechanism that allows iPhone, iPod touch and iPad owners to download free in-game content. However, the service remains operational, reports "The Next Web" (http://macte.ch/vPmSS). Over the weekend, Apple began blocking the IP address of the server used by Russian hacker Alexey V. Borodin to authenticate purchases, the article adds. It followed this up with a takedown request on the original server, taking down third-party authentication with it, also issuing a copyright claim on the overview video Borodin used to document the circumvention method. What's more, PayPal placed a block on the original donation account for violating its terms of service.

Study: consumers willing to pay more for iPads than Android...
The tablet market continues to grow, but how much are consumers willing to spend on these popular devices? While there are many answers to that question, iGR's research suggests that the main variable is whether the tablet is an Apple iPad. In late 2011, iGR published a report called "The Apple Premium" in which it quantified the dollar amount that might compel an individual to switch from intending to purchase an Apple iPad to another, competing tablet. iGR found that a competing tablet would have to be significantly less expensive than the baseline US$499 iPad 2. iGR called this price difference the "Apple Premium." In its May 2012 consumer survey, iGR repeated the question and found that the "Apple Premium" has dropped 5% -- consumers are not willing to pay quite as much of a premium for an iPad. However, there is good news for Apple: consumers are willing to pay 52% more, on average, for an iPad than for an Android-based tablet. "Although there is a slight decrease in this Apple...

'Fortune' analysts predict continuing growth in Mac...
A "Fortune" magazine panel of 61 analysts --- 27 from Wall Street, 34 independents -- are predicting continuing growth of Mac sales. Of the group, 59 of the 61 are looking for Mac sales to beat the 3.95 million sales Apple racked up in the June quarter last year, "and most expect Apple to do it quite handily." The lowest estimate -- 3.6 million Macs -- was submitted by Paul Reina of the independent Braeburn Group. The second-highest estimate -- 5.17 million -- was put forward by Merrill Lynch's Scott Craig. Averaging the estimates of all 61 analysts there's a consensus of 4.49 million units (up 13.6% year over year). Nearly everyone polled by "Fortune" believes that when Apple reports its third quarter fiscal results in two weeks, Mac sales will have outpaced the market for the 25th quarter in a row. Though barred, Apple sales booming in Iran
Though Apple and other U.S. computer products are banned in Iran under U.S. sanctions that have been in place for years, there are an estimated 100 stores in the Iranian capital that openly sell Apple products, often at little more than U.S. prices, reports "Reuters." "Business has been booming for the last three years," said Majid Tavassoli, the store's owner, in a phone interview with "Reuters." Iran's booming Apple business underscores the limitations of economic sanctions by the U.S. and other countries, the article adds. Washington and its allies have imposed sanctions in an attempt to curb Iran's nuclear program. U.S. companies are barred from selling any goods or services to Iran unless they obtain special authorization. 600 million smartphones with vision-based gestures by 2017?
A new study from ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) forecasts 600 million smartphones will be shipped with vision-based gesture recognition features in 2017. "Gesture recognition is a very exciting prospect, particularly for smartphones and tablets," says ABI Research senior analyst Josh Flood. "These devices are already heavily entrenched into peoples’ lives and another communication interface is always very welcome." Camera-based tracking for gesture recognition has actually been in use for some time. Leading game consoles -- Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation -- both have gesture recognition equipment; Kinect and PlayStation Eye respectively. These devices are in their seventh and eighth generation. Several challenges remain for gesture recognition technology for mobile devices, including effectiveness of the technology in adverse light conditions, variations in the background, and high power consumption. However, it's believed these problems can be overcome with...

Two-thirds of new mobile buyers going with smartphones
During the second quarter of 2012 smartphone penetration continued to grow, with 54.9% of U.S. mobile subscribers owning smartphones as of June, reports the Nielsen research group (http://www.nielsen.com). This growth is driven by increasing smartphone purchases. Two out of three Americans who acquired a new mobile phone in the last three months chose a smartphone instead of a feature phone. According to Nielsen, Android continues to lead the smartphone market in the U.S., with a majority of smartphone owners (51.8%) using an Android OS handset. Over a third (34.3%) of smartphone owners use an Apple iPhone, and Blackberry owners represented another 8.1% of the smartphone market. Overall among smartphone owners, Apple had the highest manufacturer share of smartphone handsets. Among recent acquirers who obtained their smartphone during June 2012, 54 percent said they chose an Android handset and 36 percent bought an iPhone.

What Forrest Gump’s Apple investment could be worth today
UK based online retailer FancyDressCostumes (http://fancydresscostumes.co.uk/) has estimated what return Forrest Gump and Dan Taylor ("Lieutenant Dan") would have yielded from their fictional Apple investment in the former's eponymous 1994 movie. By combining publicly available information about Apple's history and inputting realistic figures where accurate data is not available it is possible to track the duo's investment from inception all the way to the present day. It's worth noting that some data was excluded from the calculations, such as the unspecified amount of equity that Forrest Gump sells within a couple of years to pay for the renovation of his local church and construction of a medical centre. "Just like millions of other consumers we have been captivated by Apple's innovation over the past 10 years," says FancyDressConstumes director Martin Delaney. " As a way of illustrating this growth we thought it would be interesting to consider what return Forrest Gump's...

Does Apple discriminate against those of Iranian descent?
Reported incidents of discrimination by Apple employees against people of Iranian descent are increasing, "raising the likelihood that what appeared to be a few cases of prejudice may turn into a legal and diplomatic scandal," reports the "International Business Times." The National Iranian American Council claims it knows of at least six cases of discrimination around the country, such as people being denied service by Apple store employees on account of speaking Farsi or disclosing that they were of Iranian descent. In addition, Iran's state-owned English-language media outlet, Press TV, has said an Apple store in Australia cited U.S. law when denying the sale of an iPhone to an Australian citizen of Iranian descent, notes the "International Business Times." There are no legal obstacles to retailers like Apple selling technology like smartphones, tablets or laptops to Iranian-Americans, Iranian citizens or anyone else, notes the "International Business Times." The only limitation...

Ovum suggests data centers are 'strategic service hubs...
MNCs and large enterprise customers are being offered advanced cloud services by global carriers that require increased investment in data centers. In this latest report, the independent telecoms analyst firm found that data centers are becoming the strategic service hub for new enterprise ICT services. Each carrier has a different approach based on the individual carrier’s capital available, service portfolio and propensity to partner. DCK questions Greenpeace's grading of Apple's energy...
In a new report on Thursday, Greenpeace (http://www.greenpeace.org) said that while Apple is doing a better job ensuring the energy efficiency of its data centers, the company still lags behind some competitors in key areas. However, Rich Miller of Data Center Knowledge (DCK), an online source of daily news and analysis about the data center industry, says (http://macte.ch/eoToY) the environmental group is too critical in its grading of Apple and is apparently making up its own estimates of the North Carolina data center's energy usage rather than believing Apple's public statements. Greenpeace says that additional information Apple provided about its facilities in recent months has resulted in improved scores. That includes infrastructure siting, where Apple now has a "D" grade, up from an "F." Apple also improved from "D" to "C" ratings in energy efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigation, as well as renewable energy investment and advocacy. In mid-May Apple announced its intention to...

Apple writing carriers regarding ongoing battle with Samsung
A couple of Samsung court filings in the last 24 hours claim Apple's enforcement activities on the recent ban of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Nexus include letters to "to many carriers and retail companies that currently sell" the banned products, telling them that "[a]t a minimum" they are required to "immediately remov[e] for sale the [banned product] from all physical and online venues under [their] direction or control," reports "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/gzXDv). The article says Samsung claims that "Apple’s menacing letters greatly overreach, incorrectly claiming that third-party retailers are subject to the prohibitions of the preliminary injunction, which they clearly are not". In Samsung's opinion, "they are permitted to sell their existing inventory, even without a stay". However, both preliminary injunctions clearly relate not only to Samsung's employees, agents etc. (including its subsidiaries and "partners") but also to "those acting in concert with any of them,"...

Apple admits mistake, re-adds eligible products to EPEAT listing
In a rare, and quick, turnaround Apple says it made a mistake withdrawing its products from the EPEAT rating system, In an open letter (http://macte.ch/mOEh8), Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering Bob Mansfield says the company is re-adding all eligible products to EPEAT. Earlier this week Apple asked EPEAT (http://www.epeat.net), a government-backed, environmental rating that helps identify greener computers and other electronic equipment, to remove 39 desktops, laptops and monitors from the body's list of environmentally friendly devices including legacy models that already hold the certification. EPEAT CEO Robert Frisbee said an Apple representative requested that the company's already-cleared products be taken down from the registry which carries a list of electronic devices certified to be recyclable, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. In order to meet the standards, recyclers need to be able to easily disassemble products, with common tools, to separate...

The MacBook Air continues to trounce ultrabooks in sales
Ultrabook numbers will fall far short of Intel's targets, an IDC analyst told "CNET." Meanwhile, Apple's MacBook Air continues to be a hot seller. "The volume isn't there and it's going to be way below what Intel had hoped for," IDC analyst Jay Chou told "CNET, "referring to ultrabooks. "The first half [of 2012] is about 500,000 ultrabooks shipped worldwide. It's nowhere near Intel's initial hope," Unit shipments of MacBooks were up in the second fiscal quarter to about 2.8 million, compared with 2.75 million in the same quarter last year. The MacBook Air is a good part of Apple's business and has had good growth," Chou said. For more info go to http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57470755-92/macbook-win-ultrabook-fail-... .

Aereo court victory could benefit Apple
Aereo -- a start-up funded by ex-Fox CEO Barry Diller's IAC that streams the local broadcast signals of TV stations via the Web to iPhones and iPads for an US$12 monthly fee -- won a court victory this week. It may only be temporary, but "threatens to undermine the delicate contractual structure of American television in a way that could give Apple a boost," says "Fortune." Aereo (https://aereo.com) has come up with a way to stream local television stations to paying subscribers on the Internet, "potentially forming a new cord-cutting threat for cable and satellite distributors." The company recently unveiled the service which went ive in New York City only (for now). Aereo canl stream all programming of the major networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC) and include an Internet-powered digital video recorder. No cable or satellite channels are offered. However, the service will only work as long as users are in the local market. "If you have this and you have Netflix, you absolutely have the...

Apple gets (slightly) improved scores from Greenpeace
In a new report, Greenpeace (http://www.greenpeace.org) says that while Apple is doing a better job ensuring the energy efficiency of its data centers, the company still lags behind some competitors in key areas, reports "CNET." That includes infrastructure siting, where Apple now has a "D" grade, up from an "F." Apple also improved from "D" to "C" ratings in energy efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigation, as well as renewable energy investment and advocacy. In mid-May Apple announced its intention to operate its Maiden, N.C., data center entirely off renewable energy by the end of 2012. Greenpeace praised Apple for the pledge but chided the company for what it says has been a lack of transparency on the road map to reach that goal, notes "CNET." Apple, Samsung file proposed jury verdict forms
On Wednesday, Apple and Samsung filed, with a view to the trial that is scheduled to start on July 30, their proposed jury verdict forms and the questions that prospective jurors will be asked when they are selected from the "venire" (persons that have jury duty). The parties' proposals could hardly be further apart, notes "FOSS Patents." "The most striking difference between the proposed verdict forms is that Samsung wants the jury to provide very fine-grained answers, resulting in a total of roughly 700 (!) questions (spanning 40 pages), while Apple proposes only 49 questions (spanning 6 pages) for the jury," Florian Mueller writes for "FOSS Patents." (For more info go to http://www.fosspatents.com/2012/07/samsung-wants-to-put-roughly-700.html .) This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone...

Analyst: Apple may have sold 20 million iPads in June quarter
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) Needham & Company analyst Charles Wolf says he thinks Apple sold 204 million iPads in the June quarter. That's up from his previous prediction of 13.5 million units. If his accurate proves accurate, that number would be more than double the 9.25 million iPads Apple sold in the same quarter a year ago, notes "AppleInsider." It would also be a new record for iPad sales in any quarter, beating the 15 million iPads Apple sold in the holiday shopping season of 2011. "In our view, it's only a matter of time before iPad shipments exceed iPhone shipments," Wolf said. "The iPad is invading the business market at a much faster pace than the iPhone. In addition, the iPad will launch in China on July 20th. This should provide a significant boost in sales now that Apple is providing Chinese languages and services on its iOS platform."

The U.S. market fared worse than expected in the second quarter shrinking by 10.6% compared to a forecast of -4.4%, according to new data from the IDC research group (http://www.idc.com). The data says Apple is now in third place among computer vendors with 11.4% market share on shipments of approximately 1.8 million Macs. That compares to 10.3% market share from the second quarter of 2011 for a decline of 1.1%. HP is in first place with 25.9% market share (with sales down 12% year-over-year) and Dell is is second place with 22.5% (with sales down 9.2% year-over-year). To see how IDC's results compare with those from the Gartner research group go to . Most vendors and their channel partners struggled with shrinking demand as a saturated market and lack of incentives are leading buyers to delay purchases of computers for the time being, according to IDC. Among the top-tier leaders, only Lenovo managed to maintain positive momentum by growing its channel reach and being more...

All-in-One systems may 'save' the desktop
This year, ultrabooks, utrathins, and tablets in the mobile segment are getting all the limelight. However, IHS iSuppli (http://www.isuppli.com) says the All-in-One (AiO) computer, such as the iMac, may "save" the desktop segment of the computer market. Shipments of AiO's are forecast to reach 16.4 million units this year, up a robust 20 % from 13.7 million units last year, according to the research group. In comparison, worldwide growth of traditional desktop shipments in 2012 will amount to a dismal 0.2% -- rising from approximately 132.0 million units to 132.3 million units, notes iHS iSuppli. The healthy pace of growth for AiO's will continue in the years to come, the research group predicts. By 2016, shipments will hit an estimated 24.8 million units, equivalent to a five-year compound annual growth rate of nearly 13%. The fast-growing AiO space may, in fact, save the overall desktop segment -- already battered by competing consumer devices, like smartphones, media tablets and...

Aye, robot: analyst thinks Apple will move into home robotics...
In a note to clients -- as reported by "The Street" (http://macte.ch/bZzWG) -- UBS analyst Steven Milunovich suggests Apple could eventually move into the home robotics market -- though such a move is likely more than a decade away. Milunovich says "robots for the home would represent a new category, require substantial innovation, and leverage Apple's ease-of-use knowledge and brand." He believes that Siri could be key here, with the voice tool likely to play an increased role in future Apple products.

Some 64-bit Macs won't support Mountain Lion
Apple has confirmed via its Mountain Lion upgrade page (http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/) that previously published limitations (http://macte.ch/iv08F) on some 64-bit Macs will extend to the final release. This means that several otherwise 64-bit capable MacBook Pros, iMacs, and Mac Pros will be restricted from upgrading to OS X 10.8 when it goes public later this month for US$29 at the Mac App Store. According to information found in the recently released golden master (GM), the limitation appears to be related to graphics, reports "ars technica" (http://macte.ch/zz8f5). "Apple declined to tell us the reasoning behind leaving some of these models out of potential Mountain Lion upgrades, but we suspect it is related to an updated graphics architecture that is designed to improve OS X's graphics subsystem going forward," "ars technica" writes. "Our own Andrew Cunningham suspects the issue is related to graphics drivers, since the GPUs not supported under Mountain Lion have...

Apple has been at the center of about 60% of the major patent lawsuits, according to Kanzatec IP Group (http://kanzatec.com/), an intellectual-property consulting firm., as reported by "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/bZzWG). “I would speculate that Apple will continue to be at the center of the litigation map of large mobile IT companies for as long as it maintains its dominant place in the market,” says Feisal Mosleh, a senior vice president at Kanzatec.

Apple third among U.S. computer vendors with 12% market share
In the U.S., personal computer shipments totaled 15.9 million units in the second quarter of 2012, a 5.7% decline from the same period last year, according to the latest data from the Gartner research group (http://www.gartner.com). All vendors in the top five but Apple saw a decline in sales. Apple is now the third top computer vendor in the U.S. (and would be number one if the iPad were counted). For the second quarter of 2012, Apple had 12% market share on sales of 1.9 million Macs compared to 10.8% market share and sales of 1.8 million in the second quarter of 2011. That's annual growth of 4.3%. HP is still the top U.S. computer vendor with 25% market share. Dell is in second place with 21.7% market share. Those vendors saw year-over-year drops of 12.7% and 9.5%, respectively. Globally, HP is the top computer vendor with 14.9% market share, followed by Lenova (14.7%), Acer (11%), Dell (10.7%) and ASUS (7%). Apple has yet to break into the top five globally.
