Linux creator Linus Torvalds is now using a Power Mac G5 as his main desktop. “Torvalds, who initially created Linux for the Intel x86 platform, revealed to the Linux Kernel Mailing List in February during a discussion on kernel size reduction that his main desktop machine no longer featured an x86 processor. Hence, Torvalds said, a patch specific to the x86 platform that he was submitting to the list for consideration was totally untested.” However, Torvalds isn’t using Mac OS X.

HP announced yesterday that it is now shipping its first notebook, the Compaq nx5000, to come with the Linux operating system preinstalled. “This is the year that Linux overtakes the Mac on the desktop, and maybe my laptop will help accelerate that,” Martin Fink, HP’s vice president of Linux, said at the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo during a keynote speech.

CodeWeavers, a small software developer that specializes in software that lets Windows programs run on Linux, has a new version of its software that adds support for Apple’s iTunes. “The company said CrossOver Office 3.1 adds support for the jukebox and music download software,” reports CNET News.com. “The version is currently in preview form and being made available only to existing CrossOver office customers…

In a press release announcing that the Dell DJ is now supported on desktop Linux machines, Lindows CEO Michael Robertson noted that Apple had declined to allow the iPod to work on the operating system. “We talked with Apple Computer about supporting the iPod but they want to keep that a closed system,” said Robertson.
