Apple today released a Java update for Mac OS X 10.3.9 that fixes problems some users had after updating to the latest version of Panther. “After updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9, some systems may have issues with Java applications and Java-enabled websites when using Safari,” the company says. “Safari may unexpectedly quit, and standalone Java applications may unexpectedly quit or not launch.

Apple has posted a support document that details a Java issue that some users are having after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3.9. “After updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9, some systems may have issues with Java applications and Java-enabled websites when using Safari,” Apple says. “Safari may unexpectedly quit, and standalone Java applications may unexpectedly quit or not launch. You can perform a simple test to verify whether your computer is experiencing this issue.

Apple today released Java 1.4.2 Update 2 via the Mac OS X Software Update preference pane. According to the release notes, the update provides improved behavior for applets in Safari and increased stability for desktop Java applications. Apple said Java 1.4.2 Update 2 also includes all the improvements found in Java 1.4.2 Update 1.

Apple notes: “Your Mac OS X computer will be updated to Java 1.4.2 Update 1. If the system currently has Java 1.4.1, it will be removed.”

Apple has released Java 1.4.2 for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. Apple has released a Java 3D and Java Advanced Imaging update, which contains support for the two technologies. “Java 3D extends the Java platform, providing additional capabilities for running three-dimensional graphics applications and Internet-based 3D applets. Java Advanced Imaging (JAI) Update extends the Java platform, providing additional capabilities for running image processing applications and imaging applets in Java.” The update requires Mac OS X 10.3.1 or later and Java 1.4.1 or later.

Apple today released Java 1.4.1 Update 1, a new version of its Java implementation for Mac OS X. The update adds the following enhancements: improved Java applet support for Safari and other Web browsers that support the Java Internet Plug-In; improved drawing correctness and performance; changes to Java 1.3.1 that provide support for Oracle11i client applications on Mac OS X; and improved stability, memory usage, and correctness. Apple has posted Java 1.3.1 Update for Oracle, which provides support for Oracle 11i client applications on Mac OS X. Apple recommends that you only update to Java for Oracle if you need to use Oracle 11i client applications. The release is just in time for Sun’s 2003 JavaOne conference, which takes place June 10-13 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California. Apple is one of the co-sponsors of the conference and will also be exhibiting.
