Apple halts sales of iChat AV for Jaguar

Apple has quietly removed the Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) version of iChat AV from its online store. The page for the video and audio conferencing software on Apple’s Web site has also been stripped of all mentions of Jaguar and says that iChat AV now requires Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) or later. iChat AV–introduced in beta form in June 2003 alongside Apple’s iSight–is free as part of Panther but was previously available to Jaguar users for US$29.95.

iChat AV 2.1 adds Windows video conferencing support

Apple today released a public beta version of iChat AV 2.1, an update to its instant messaging application that adds support for video conferencing with those using AOL Instant Messenger 5.5 for Windows (also released today). “With the introduction of iChat AV in Mac OS X Panther and the iSight camera, Apple revolutionized the way people communicate with each other over the Internet,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

iChat AV, iSight debut at WWDC

Apple today introduced a major revision to iChat, the company’s instant messaging application, by offering video and audio conferencing capabilities. In addition, the company announced iSight, a new digital video camera. Together the two products enable high-quality video conferences between two Mac users over any broadband connection. iChat AV also features audio conferences even over dial-up connections to the Internet.
