The press is reporting a monstrous patent case in Federal Court in the state of Texas that went against Apple for the “Cover Flow” way of rolling images across the display, as seem in the album art display in iTunes and elsewhere in the Mac OS.  

While the judgement likely means at the end of it all, Apple may well have to pay some amount of money, the current US$600,000,000 judgement will not likely stand. Frankly, so many patents on computer graphical interfaces have been written it staggers the mind to thing much could really be novel anymore.

Pixelmator for Mac OS X adds WebP support

The Pixelmator Team (http://www.pixelmator.com) has updated Pixelmator — a US$59 GPU-powered image editing tool for creating, editing and enhancing still images — to version 1.6.2. The upgrade, free to registered users, adds support for the new WebP image format.

WebP is an image format developed by Google that can be used on photographic images. Other changes in Pixelmator 1.6.2 also includes minor improvements and several bug fixes.

New Apple TV good, but no cable replacement

The new Apple TV is a solid update to Apple’s “hobby,” but it’s not a “cable killer” as I hoped it would be (sorry, Comcast — well, no, I’m not). Of course, that would be expecting a lot from an US$99 device. And as a device that streams content from my Mac AND lets me access Netflix, it’s a good upgrade for folks like myself.
