Apple Pulls Games with Confederate Flags, but Leaves...

Apple is pulling games from the iPhone and iPad App Store that include Confederate battle flags in the wake of rising public distaste in the wake of recent hate motivated killings in South Carolina. While Confederate flags are disappearing from the App Store, however, apps with other symbols with hate-related symbols such as swastikas are still available.

The Mac Observer Spin: The Confederate battle flag was created and has represented racial hatred since its inception, so it's easy to see why Apple is taking a hard line stance in the App Store following the recent killings in South Carolina. It's odd, however, that Apple's anti-hate campaign is limited to only the one symbol instead of including others such as the Nazi swastika.

AppleCare+ extends coverage to defective batteries...

Apple has made a small but welcomed change for those that have AppleCare+ for iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, adding improved coverage for defective batteries. Previously Apple’s terms for the extended warranty offered coverage for batteries that retained less than 50% of Apple’s quoted specs. But with the updated terms, Apple will have you covered for batteries that retain less than 80%.

If during the Plan Term, you submit a valid claim by notifying Apple that (i) a defect in materials and workmanship has arisen in the Covered Equipment, or (ii) the capacity of the Covered Device’s battery to hold an electrical charge is less than eighty percent (80%)...

FLIR releases 2nd-gen FLIR ONE, iOS-ready thermal...

FLIR, maker of standalone and accessory thermal imaging cameras, has officially released FLIR ONE for iOS ($250), the improved sequel to FLIR ONE for iPhone 5/5s. A victim of unfortunate timing, the original FLIR ONE hit stores just before Apple released the iPhone 6, but only fit the iPhone 5/5s, limiting its appeal to users in need of thermal imaging capabilities. Redesigned as a dongle rather than a case, the new FLIR ONE works across multiple iOS devices, plugging into their bottoms with a Lightning connector. It has a 350mAh battery to power its twin cameras, requiring no energy from the connected iOS device.

FLIR’s advantage over key rival Seek Thermal (reviewed here) is its use of twin cameras that collectively provide what...

One of the new features we highlighted in iOS 9 is an innovative new way to help your iPhone battery make it through a long day. When toggled on, Low Power mode automatically kicks in when your battery level starts to get low, reducing the clock speed of the CPU as well as cutting some background activities.

MacRumors ran some tests in Geekbench 3 to measure the performance reduction when Low Power mode was activated, and found it to reduce the performance of an iPhone by around 40%. This would mean that your...

With transgender celebrities gracing magazine covers and the Supreme Court set to rule on gay marriage across the U.S., the LGBT movement has come a long way. But we’re still far behind when it comes to addressing the health and wellness of LGBT people.

To address that, medical researchers are launching a new “PRIDE Study” to shed some light on the unique health needs of LGBT folks—and they’re using iPhones to conduct it. A new ResearchKit app developed by the University of California at San Francisco will survey a wide range of LGBT folks about health issues like HIV/AIDS, smoking, cancer, obesity, mental issues and depression.

“The main question there is, what is the relationship between being LGBTQ—or more broadly a sexual or gender minority person—and mental and physical health?” Mitchell Lunn, co-director of the PRIDE Study at UCSF, told BuzzFeed News...

Apple bars Civil War games from App Store over...

The renewed debate over the Confederate battle flag is bleeding further into the digital realm this morning. As Touch Arcade reports, Apple seems to be removing many games that feature the flag's image from the iOS App Store, including a number of war simulations that use the flag primarily to mark historical context.

Touch Arcade reports that affected developers are being told that their apps have been removed "...because [they] include images of the confederate flag used in offensive and mean-spirited ways." But some game developers take issue with that characterization. "We're in no way sympathetic to the use of the flag in an offensive way, we used it purely because historically that was the flag that was used at the time," a developer from strategy game maker HexWar told Touch Arcade.

Game Labs' Maxim Zasov told Touch Arcade that he accepts Apple's...

Artists to get their 0.2 cents worth during Apple...

With five more days until Apple Music debuts on June 30, details are beginning to come out about what exactly Apple will pay artists during the three-month free trial period. According to an article in The New York Times which cited music executives, the deal with record labels will result in Apple paying 0.2 cents per play for songs streamed during the free trial. That rate is on par with the free tier rates paid by competing services like Spotify.

Artists and songwriters will actually make quite a bit less; that fee is reportedly pre-tax, meaning that after value-added taxes are levied in European countries, up to an addition 25 percent could be lopped off.

Apple is also paying a smaller fee to music publishers for songwriting rights, with negotiations still underway as the date for Apple Music's launch draws closer. ...

External Link: Apple Bans the Confederate Battle...

Apple has removed from the App Store any app that prominently features the Confederate battle flag (though upon a casual search, there appear to be a few that Apple missed). The flag has been increasingly under fire in the wake of the racially motivated church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, and retailers such as Amazon, eBay, and Walmart have withdrawn sales of items depicting it. However, some say that Apple has gone too far, since the ban also includes a number of Civil War games that used the flag in a historical context, some of which were used by educators.

Beats 1 to feature celebrity shows

The launch of Apple's 24-hour global radio station, Beats 1, is still few days away, and The New York Times as a few details on what we can expect. Specifically, it seems music celebrities will plan and host their own shows, including Elton John, Drake, Disclosure, St. Vincent, Josh Homme, and Pharrell Williams. These shows will cover one- and two-hour blocks outside of shows hosted by the station's regular DJs.

Our take on the news...

Back when I was a Sirius subscriber (before it became Sirius XM), this very thing was a big draw for me. Conversation, insights and music hand-chosen by my favorite musicians? Yes, please.

The three-year journey to multitasking and...

ars.AD.queue.push(["xrailTop", {sz:"300x250", kws:[], collapse: true}]);iOS 9 is giving the iPad some of the attention it needs, especially if you’re the kind of person who’s using it as a laptop replacement. The software keyboard is better. Support for physical keyboards is better. And, most importantly, we’ll be able to use that big screen to look at more than one app at a time.

This may feel like a big change for the platform, but in reality, Apple has been laying the groundwork for multitasking apps since at least iOS 6. Developers have had to change their apps a lot in the last two years, between iOS 7’s new aesthetic and the introduction of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. If they’ve been making those changes according to Apple’s best practices, then they’re already done most of the work to make their apps multitasking-capable.

We’ll take a quick look at the existing technologies Apple is using to enable multitasking on the iPad, and then we...

Zane Lowe, the D.J. scratching out Beats 1 for Apple

The new York Times:

For the last 12 years, Mr. Lowe has been a top tastemaker on the BBC’s Radio 1 by championing brand-new music, landing interviews with stars like Kanye West and running his show with a frenetic production style inspired by hip-hop itself. Now he is preparing for a much broader role as the guiding voice of Beats 1, a free Internet radio station from Apple that on Tuesday will begin broadcasting to smartphones and laptops around the world — an experiment, of sorts, to reinvent live radio.

I hope we see profiles of the other two featured DJs for Beats 1. This is an aspect of Apple Music I find especially interesting and, I think, will make or break the service.

Apple’s decided on a royalty amount to pay the artists on Apple Music during its 90-day free trial.

And that number is 0.2 cents per play.

The New York Times is reporting that music executives close to the story have stated that Apple has negotiated 0.2 cents per play with the record labels. The amount is comparable to free tier rates paid by competing streaming services.

In addition to the per-play fee, Apple is also paying a smaller sum to publishers for songwriting rights. Publishing companies confirmed that negotiations are still in flux less than one week from Apple Music’s launch.

On Tuesday, Apple inked...

T-Mobile is upgrading its Jump plan introduced two years ago to allow subscribers to move to new smartphones more frequently than before. The new Jump On Demand option lets you lease a smartphone for a small monthly fee, then trade it in for a new smartphone up to three times per year at no additional cost. For example, a base model iPhone 6 would cost $15 per month to lease with Jump On Demand after trading in an eligible smartphone.

Without upgrading, leasing that iPhone 6 through Jump On Demand would carry the monthly fee for 18 months. Then T-Mobile will provide a purchase option, $164 in the case of the iPhone 6, if you choose to keep the leased device as owned.

The appeal of Jump On Demand,...

Samsung continues its years-long advertising campaign against Apple fans with the release of its latest Galaxy S6 commercial. The latest volley portrays the group as bumbling idiots always tripping over their tangled changing cables. Our take on the news:
