Macworld Apple has shared news that the Studio Display XDR‘s medical imaging calibrator has received clearance from the FDA. The company’s 501(k) application has been approved; a 501(k) is an application to show that a device seeking FDA approval is substantially equivalent to one that already has been approved (for those functions that the FDA regulates). Beginning this week, the Medical Imaging Calibrator for macOS will be available for Studio Display XDR customers. It is not clear if it will require a macOS update or a Studio Display software update, or if it is in the currently-released software in a disabled state and can be enabled with a server-side switch. The feature will only be available in the United States as it has not secured regulatory approval in other regions yet. Last week, Apple cut the entry-level Studio Display XDR price from $3,299 to $2,899 and offered refunds to anyone who had purchased one with a VES mount instead of a stand. The option with a tilt-and-height adjustable stand still starts at $3,299.04:34 pmAirPods Max 2 vs Pro 3: Which should you actually buy?
I have avoided the AirPods Max since their original release in 2020. I could never justify the $550 price tag, especially when the AirPods Pro line was much cheaper, offered more features, and had a more convenient form factor. I knew there was a target customer for these high-end headphones, but at the time, it wasn’t me. Then Apple dropped the true successor to the Gen 1 AirPods Max and added a lot of the features and internal hardware that the AirPods Pro 3 received earlier in 2025. So I decided to pick up a pair, and while the AirPods Max 2 are objectively great headphones, what it truly did was show me just how incredible the AirPods Pro 3 are. Let me explain. more…04:32 pmHere’s proof that an Apple Watch knockoff is a terrible deal
Macworld In case you were looking to save some money on a smartwatch that looks just like an Apple Watch, here’s a reason to be very careful about what you spend your money on. Because while the outside might be similar, you’re definitely not getting the same experience. Lumafield’s First Article blog has an interesting article about the differences between knock-off products and their real counterparts. They used an industrial CT scanner to see inside each product and point out the differences in construction, components, and features. And one set of products that Lumafield looks at is an $799 Apple Watch Ultra 3 and a smartwatch from Oiciido, which ranges in price from $15 to $40. You don’t have to look hard to see the differences between the Apple Watch (left) and a cheap imitator.Lumafield And to no one’s surprise, you get what you pay for. The Ultra 3 is packed with components (indicative of a feature-rich device), while the Oiciido watch, “looks almost empty next to it.” The scans also show how the Ultra 3’s parts are sophistically integrated, while you can see loose wires in the Oiciido watch “that would not survive the mechanical and thermal demands of a legitimate wearable.” One of Lumafield’s most interesting scans is of the Ultra 3’s optical heart rate sensor and its photodiodes for heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring. The Oiciido watch has a “basic” LED heart rate sensor, and no hardware for multi-wavelength SpO2 measurement. Lumafield’s findings are a good reminder that knockoffs often make big promises and take huge shortcuts to deliver prices that are too good to be true. I do recommend checking out Oiciido’s Amazon store, because its AI-generated images are so bad that they’re funny.04:08 pmHurry and grab this super rare Apple Watch Ultra 3 deal

Macworld Remember the Shot on iPhone ad campaign? Well, a pair of photos from the astronauts on Artemis II might spur Apple to bring it back. As they make their way toward the moon–an event that will be livestreamed today beginning at 1 p.m. ET–the astronauts Christina Koch and Reid Wiseman shared two incredible photos of Earth (via NASA’s X account) taken from the window of the Orion spacecraft. But it wasn’t taken with a high-tech camera. It was snapped with an iPhone 17 Pro. Originally conceived to promote the iPhone 6, the Shot on iPhone campaign ran for years and featured original photography from iPhone users. In 2019, Apple ran a contest and selected 10 winners to showcase their shots on billboards in select cities, in Apple stores, and online. If the same contest were held this year, there’s no question that these two shots would be among the winners. Inside the dim Orion spacecraft, a window in the center of the image shows a brightly lit Earth and astronaut Reid Wiseman sits on the right side looking back at Earth. NASA As reported by The New York Times, the iPhones onboard the spacecraft are strictly for taking photos and can’t connect to the internet or Bluetooth accessories. Apple has no part in the planning or selection of the phones used on board, but we assume they’re pretty happy with the results. The photos are of Koch and Reid looking out the window at Earth, which is nearly fully visible. The alt-text included reads: “Inside the dim Orion spacecraft, a window in the center of the image shows a brightly lit Earth and an astronaut sits on the right side looking back at Earth.” The photos were snapped with an iPhone 17 Pro, but it’s not clear what zoom or settings were used. While iPhones have traveled through space before, this is the first time a smartphone has been fully qualified for extended use in orbit.02:30 pmHow to use Focus modes to wrangle all your notifications
