iOS 27 is coming soon. There’s a good chance you’ll hate it
Macworld Apple’s going to unveil iOS 27 during its WWDC on Monday, and there’s a good chance that half of you are going to hate it. The single biggest change in this update is that Siri is going to evolve from an out-of-date phone assistant that doesn’t seem to work half the time to a full conversational chatbot, with hooks throughout the OS. Whether it works great or not, it’s going to make a lot of people mad. AI blowback is real, and it’s here, especially among younger generations. Listen to these college graduates boo at the mere mention of AI at their graduation: The fact of the matter is, Apple is going all-in on generative AI at a time when AI is increasingly associated with massive layoffs, huge data centers using tremendous amounts of water and power, chip shortages driving up costs, misinformation, abuse, suicides, you name it. A lot of people feel that generative AI is dangerous, unhelpful, and often confidently wrong, but it is being forced on them by a billionaire extraction class that just wants the stock to go up. At the same time, the current Siri is genuinely out of date, doesn’t work well, and needs a modern replacement. Plus, there are lots of people, not just the tech investors, who genuinely like AI and use it frequently. And they feel, perhaps rightly, that Apple is way behind and needs to catch up. So Apple is in a bit of a no-win situation. It has to delicately thread the needle of convincing the AI lovers and shareholders that with iOS 27, the iPhone is no longer years behind the competition in the biggest tech trend since the internet. But at the same time, it also needs to convince a large and growing group of AI haters that they’re not about to infect a billion iPhones with harmful, soulless slop. Apple has spent decades cultivating a reputation as the one big tech company that cares about privacy and security, respects creative artists, and protects the environment. And now it’s going to come out swinging with the very technology that is most strongly associated with the very opposite of all of those things. Can Apple pull off this delicate balancing act and make everyone happy? We’ll find out on June 8 but I think there’s a really good chance that no matter what Apple shows us at WWDC, half of the audience is going to be really unhappy.

MacBook Neo is selling really well, surprising nobody
Macworld If I were to tell you that Apple’s newest laptop, which costs about 40 percent less than any other laptop it’s ever made, and was all anyone could talk about for a solid month, was actually selling really well… you would probably respond with, “No duh.” Well, that’s what’s happening. According to TechCrunch, market analyst IDC estimates that the MacBook Neo shipped 1.1 million units in the quarter ending in March. This, despite only being available for the last three weeks of March. That’s a lot more than any other Mac model. What’s more, they claim that shipments increased in April, so the number will only go up in the next quarter, probably by a lot. David Naranjo, associate director of Counterpoint Research, told TechCrunch that the Neo could “eventually help Apple increase its share of the $400-$699 notebook market from about 2 percent to around 15 percent.” I’m not sure what to do with those figures, since “eventually” could mean anything, and I’m not sure how Apple already has 2 percent of the $400-699 notebook market when they haven’t had a laptop priced anywhere near that, ever. Perhaps the 2 percent is his estimate of Apple’s current share, thanks to the Neo? Number issues aside, none of this should surprise anyone. The MacBook Neo is the first truly new Mac in years, and it just so happens to be a laptop that costs hundreds less than any MacBook before it. We should expect the newest and least expensive (by a wide margin) new Mac laptop to be the best seller, but it also comes at a time when component shortages are causing surging prices, and overall inflation has everyone watching their wallets. We knew it would be a hit when every Windows laptop maker scrambled as fast as they could to show that, actually, the MacBook Neo isn’t that great because this Windows laptop over here on sale for 50 percent off has bigger numbers on the spec sheet. But it seems that Apple has the biggest numbers that actually matter.

Microsoft warns that some Office files might not open on your Mac next month
Macworld Microsoft has posted a support document that warns of a potential problem with Microsoft Office or 365 and iOS and macOS. Microsoft is ending support for devices running older operating systems, which can result in what the company calls “reduced functionality mode” with Office files. Users will be able to open and print files, but the files cannot be edited or saved, nor can new files be created. Microsoft states that this issue will arise starting on July 13. To restore functionality, Microsoft instructs users to update their device’s operating system to run its software. Macs require macOS 12 Monterey or later, iPhones require iOS 17 or later, and iPads require iPadOS 17 or later. Once the OS has been updated, Office/365 can be updated. Microsoft says the issue affects “both Microsoft 365 subscribers on macOS, iPhone, and iPad, and those with non-subscription software, including Office 2021 or Office 2019 on macOS. It published a support document that provides instructions on how to update your devices and Microsoft software. In the instance where a device can’t be upgraded to the required OS, Microsoft states that it will send an email “with more information” to the address listed in the customer’s Office or 365 account. Users can use 365 on the web at microsoft.com, or use Office on a different device. Users of Office 2019 for Mac will need to switch to Office web apps or subscribe to Microsoft 365.

Right now availability is constrained and delivery dates are weeks away, however. Apple has a 9-10 week wait for the 32GB models, but the 64GB and 94GB RAM options have a 16-18 week wait. B&H has a listing for the M4 Max Mac Studio, but they are “unavailable”. The M3 Ultra Mac Studio is listed as “discontinued”. Best Buy lists the M4 Max Mac Studio unavailable and the M3 Ultra as “sold out”. In the U.K., you can usually buy the Mac Studio from Apple or the following stockists: Apple has a 10-11 week wait for most models, although the 64GB RAM option has a 16-18 week wait. KRCS offers long delivery times for the Mac mini M4 Max, with the 512GB model being out of stock. Argos stocks the Mac Studio, but both models are out of stock. Currys stocks the Mac Studio, but both models are out of stock. Another option is to buy refurbished. The best option to buy a refurbished Mac Studio would normally be Apple’s Certified Refurbished Store, but there are none available as of June 2026. We have seen a refurbished deal at BackMarket U.K. that could be worth buying, if you really need a Mac Studio: Mac Studio, M4 Max, 36GB RAM, 511GB: £2,725. Delivery is in days. Note that it would usually cost £2,099 so you are paying a premium for a highly sought after Mac. The U.S. Back Market has an M2 Max Mac Studio for $2,152. What specifications should you choose? Assuming you can find one in stock, here is some guidance on which specifications to select. RAM Memory is more important than processor upgrades for many buyers. Because Apple Silicon uses unified memory and cannot be upgraded later, it’s worth buying more RAM than you think you’ll need. As a general rule: 36GB–48GB is sufficient for most professional users. 64GB–96GB is recommended for serious video production, AI workloads, and advanced creative work. Higher capacities are most useful for large AI models, 3D projects, and specialist professional workflows. Don’t make the mistake of spending your budget on a larger CPU upgrade while compromising on memory. Storage Internal storage can be supplemented with external Thunderbolt drives, making it easier to expand later. For most professional users: 1TB is a sensible minimum. 2TB is a better long-term choice. Larger capacities are best reserved for users with substantial media libraries or large project files. Thunderbolt 5 provides significantly greater bandwidth and is particularly valuable for: External SSD arrays and high-speed storage Professional video editing and post-production workflows Multi-display setups Audio production and recording environments AI clusters, machine learning workloads, and advanced storage solutions For users who can benefit from these capabilities, the M4 Pro Mac mini offers advantages that are likely to remain relevant even as newer generations are released. If your workloads are primarily coding, productivity, and moderate creative work, the Mac mini m4 Pro may offer better value. Other things to consider Apple The Mac Studio does not include a display, keyboard, or mouse. A professional monitor can add significantly to the overall cost of ownership, so factor this into your budget before purchasing. If you’re buying for the long term: Prioritise RAM. Don’t skimp on storage. Buy the best configuration you can realistically afford. Consider whether waiting for the next generation makes sense if you expect to keep the machine for five years or more. Should you buy a Mac Studio? Buy now if you’re upgrading from an Intel Mac, your current machine is holding back your work, or you need a workstation immediately. Good luck finding one though. Wait if you already own a recent Mac Studio, want the latest M5 architecture, or need the highest-end configurations and are willing to see how Apple’s next-generation lineup develops.

Future Apple Vision Pro could gain Apple Pencil that can simulate textures
Apple has proposed an Apple Pencil-like stylus that could be used with Apple Vision Pro to convey the texture of virtual objects through haptic feedback.Apple Pencil can now react to the surface of an iPad, but in future versions could become virtual reality sensors - image credit: AppleThere's an old children's toy where one pencil is connected to another such that drawing with the first pencil also moves the second. A newly-granted patent is akin to this idea, except instead of copying or enlarging drawings, the Apple Pencil relays "surface roughness and other surface features, as well as motion data (e.g., trajectory and velocity) of the hand-held device" in virtual reality.This "Surface texture detection and emulation" patent does explicitly refer to a "pencil" system, but it's really applicable to any handheld device.
