This means that thumb drives aren’t ideal for handling larger files, or for making regular Time Machine backups on your Mac. However, Kingston’s new Dual Portable SSD offers the best of both worlds, combining the compact design of a thumb drive with the speed and capacity of an SSD. In fact, the Dual Portable SSD is so small that Kingston refers to it as an SSD “camouflaged as a thumb drive”. It certainly looks the part, with a compact rectangular design that measures just 72mm long, 21mm wide and a mere 8.6mm thick. It’s about the same size as the Kingston 64GB thumb drive that I often use for quick file transfers in my office, but is far faster and has much greater storage capacity. You can easily slip it into your pocket when you’re travelling, and it only weighs 13g so you’ll barely notice it as you carry it around. It’s sturdy though, with a bright red metal casing that feels solid enough to cope with life on the road. Kingston doesn’t quote an IP rating for weather resistance, so you should probably avoid getting it wet if possible, but the company is confident enough to provide a five-year warranty and the drive should be more than tough enough to cope with general day-to-day use. Dual USB interfaces allow you to instantly connect the drive to most computers and mobile devices. Kingston Technology Dual Drive Most SSDs use a conventional USB cable to connect to your computers or mobile devices but, like a thumb drive, the Dual Portable SSD has a USB interface that is built right into the body of the drive. Or, to be precise, it has ‘dual’ interfaces – hence the name – with a USB-A interface on one end of the drive and USB-C on the other end. That ensures compatibility with a wide range of computers and mobile devices, although when plugged in to a USB-C port on my MacBook Pro the width of the drive did mean that it obscured the adjacent USB-C port on the MacBook, which might be inconvenient if you have other USB devices, such as a keyboard or mouse, that you need to plug in as well. We were also a little concerned about the small plastic covers that protect the USB connectors on the drive, as these come right off and could easily be lost if you’re moving around a lot. The drive performs well, though. It doesn’t support Thunderbolt, relying instead on USB 3.2 Gen 2, but Kingston quotes speeds of 950MB/s for write performance and 1,050MB/s for read performance. Our tests with the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test showed that the write speed right was on the nail at 950MB/s. The read performance was slightly slower at 920MB/s but that should still be fine for general day-to-day use when transferring files, or for routine Time Machine backups on your Mac.  The drive’s metal case keeps it safe on the road, with removable caps to protect the USB interfaces. Kingston Technology The ultra-compact design does come at a cost, though, and the Dual Portable SSD is a little more expensive than other SSD drives that we’ve reviewed recently, including Kingston’s slightly larger XS1000. Prices start at $125.89/£87.41 for a drive with 512GB storage, although we tested the 1TB version that costs $143.99/£128.31. There’s also a 2TB option available as well, for $238.99/£211.93. There’s no software provided with the drive either. Kingston does make an app called SSD Manager, which provides basic features for monitoring the drive’s health and performance, but this is currently only available for Windows PCs. That’s not a problem for Mac users who can use Apple’s Disk Utility and Time Machine to provide diagnostic and back-up features. However, some users might require a drive that includes an app that provides password protection for their files, as some of Kingston’s rivals do.  Should You Buy The Dual Portable SSD Professional users might prefer a faster drive that supports Thunderbolt to provide maximum performance for large graphics or video files, but the USB performance of the Dual Portable SSD is more than adequate for routine tasks such as file transfer and Time Machine backups. Its compact and sturdy design also makes it an ideal option for people who need a backup drive that they can quickly slip into their pocket when travelling.

The 5 best Apple Store offers during Apple’s 4-day shopping event
Macworld Black Friday is here, and there are some truly incredible deals on Apple products. From AirPods for $69 to hundreds off MacBooks, if you’re looking for some new Apple gear, you’re almost certain to find it. Even Apple gets in on the fun with its own Apple Store Shopping Event that lasts from Black Friday through Cyber Monday. It doesn’t offer limited-time price cuts, but instead hands out gift cards for eligible products ranging from $25 to $250. The good thing is you can use the gift card on anything Apple sells, including subscriptions and App Store purchases. So even if you’re not planning on buying another device for a while, you can still put your gift card to good use. With that in mind, here are our five favorite Apple Store offers: iPhone 16/16 Plus: $75 gift card iPhones are rarely on sale outside of long-term carrier switching deals, so any time we can get an unlocked phone for less than the MSRP, it’s a good deal. The iPhone 16 was already cut by $100 in September when the iPhone 17 arrived, so you’re saving even more here. We don’t need to tell you how great they are, but we will tell you that you’re getting a better deal than Amazon. Get AirPods Pro 3 at the Apple Store Eugen Wegmann Apple Watch SE 3: $50 gift card The Apple Watch SE is one of the rare “budget” Apple products that has the right combination of features, design, and price, and we happily recommend it at $249. But with a $50 gift card as part of Apple’s Black Friday shopping event, we wouldn’t pass it up. We gave them a near-perfect score in our review, but also noted that it’s a relatively small upgrade over the AirPods Pro 2, which has the same H2 chip and many similar features. The new model has the same $249 MSRP in the U.S. and a slightly lower £219 RRP in the U.K. (AirPods Pro 2 were £229), so keep that in mind when shopping. We don’t expect to see AirPods Pro 3 with more than $30-$50 off, but the older AirPods Pro 2 did dip as low as $139 at Walmart, but that deal seems to have ended now, the next best option is $189 on Amazon. The two new health features, hypertension alerts and Sleep Score, are also available on the Series 10, and there isn’t a new color this year. As we noted in our review, we don’t think Series 9 or 10 users need to upgrade. We are seeing savings of $60 on the Series 11, which is a great price for such a full-featured watch, but with $150 off the Series 10 you might want to consider that, you won’t miss out on much (See our comparison of every Apple Watch). The sleeper hit of the new Apple Watch lineup is the SE 3, which got the biggest update of all three models, gaining an always-on display, temperature sensor, a faster chip, on-device Siri, and fast charging. We gave it a near-perfect score of 4.5 stars and highly recommend it at full price—for $50 off, it’s a no-brainer decision. At the high end, the Ultra 3 has a slightly larger screen, satellite connectivity, and longer battery life compared to last year’s model. We’re looking for at least $50 off, but if you want one, we’d recommend this $599 deal on the Ultra 2 instead. It comes down to preference and budget—if you’re largely using your tablet for consumption (streaming, surfing, games), get an Air, for which we are seeing prices cut by $150, but if you have real work to do on it, get the Pro: you can get $100 off the M5 iPad Pro in the U.S. which is a great deal on such a new device. The mini hasn’t had a meaningful update in a couple of generations. Carriers will likely have enticing deals with trade-ins as well, but be wary of long-term contracts and terms. One opportunity worth considering is Apple’s Black Friday deal: You can buy an iPhone from Apple and get a gift voucher: Apple, $75 gift voucher with iPhone 16 or 16 Plus Apple, $50 gift voucher with iPhone 16e In the U.K. there are less limitations on the sale of iPhones so you will be able to pick one up unlocked at a discount if you would prefer to buy an iPhone up front, rather than on a contract. Apple only launched the iPhone 17 lineup in September, so it’s a surprise that we are seeing £100 off the iPhone Air. The iPhone 16e also has £100 off at Amazon: a good saving. Also be on the look out for deals (like this one from AO) on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max which are no longer sold by Apple but would offer a good option to those who appreciate the extra camera on the Pro iPhone models but can’t stretch to the iPhone 17 Pro. We’d suggest that when it comes to the other deals you should weigh them up against Apple’s own giveaway, where you could get £60 or £40 vouchers with the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, or iPhone 16e, respectively. For example, £100 off an iPhone 16e is better than Apple’s £40 voucher, but AO’s £55 off iPhone 16 (128GB) doesn’t match Apple’s £60 voucher deal so it would be worth waiting to see it that goes lower.
