- 08:03 pmmacOS Sequoia introduces iPhone Mirroring, Tiled interface, and AI features
Macworld Apple on Monday revealed macOS Sequoia, the next version of the Mac operating system. Version 15 of macOS is loaded with AI features, many of which are also in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Apple highlighted the following macOS 15 features during the keynote. iPhone Mirroring Mac users are iPhone users, and the two have often felt like separate platforms. iPhone Mirroring closes that gap, allowing users to directly access their iPhones on their Mac desktop. The Mac and iPhone connect wirelessly and users see the iPhone Home screen on the Mac. Users can click and use iPhone apps, iPhone app notifications can be activated and the appropriate iPhone app launches. Users can also drag and drop photos and videos from the iPhone to the Mac. The iPhone audio will come through the Mac’s sound output, and iPhone notifications will integrate with the macOS notifications list. Apple Apple Apple Tiled UI for organizing windows Mac users work in multiple apps and files at once, which can result in window organization being a chore unto itself. In macOS Sequoia, users can now drag a window to the edge of the screen and macOS will suggest a tiled view of your open windows. Tiles can be arranged side by side or in a corner arrangement. New keyboard shortcuts can be used to mange the tiles. Apple Apple Apple New Password app Apple is finally providing a better way to access passwords and other information stored in Keychain by introducing a new Passwords app. Data in the app is encrypted and can sync with other devices through iCloud, and can even sync with Windows via the iCloud for Windows app. Safari The new Highlights feature offers a way to get information related to the webpage you are visiting. For example, if you are booking a hotel room, Safari offers a way to quickly get directions on Maps. The Reader feature now offers a summary and table of contents to quickly access the webpage’s content. The new Viewer kicks in when a video is detected on a webpage and includes a full set of controls and the ability to set the video in Picture-in-Picture mode. Video conferencing improvements With macOS Sequoia, Apple introduces new features that can be used in video conferencing apps such as FaceTime and Zoom. Presenters can now see a preview of their slides so they can make sure their presentation is going as planned. Participants can now customize their background with a macOS wallpaper or a personal photo. Apple Intelligence features Apple has implemented a ton of AI-based features that work across macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18. Here’s brief summary of what will be available: Writing tools: In apps such as Mail, Pages, Notes, and others, written content will have several features available, including suggestions for revisions, proofreading and copy editing, and more. Mail will offer email summarizations and smart replies. Image Playground: apps will be able to create images in one of three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. In Messages, Image Playground can be used to create personalized images; in Notes, Image Playground can be used to transform sketches into polished pictures. Photos: New tools in the Photos app allow users to find photos based on a set of characteristics–show me pictures with a basketball,” for example. A new Clean Up tool can be used to remove items from a picture. Siri: Many Apple Intelligence features are implemented through Siri, which will have a better understanding of contextual commands, and will be able to perform functions based on the context of its use. How to install macOS Sequoia Apple released the beta of macOS Sequoia to developers, with a public beta arriving in July. The official release is set for the fall and is free to all users. The new OS is compatible with the following Macs: MacBook Air: 2020 or later MacBook Pro: 2018 or later iMac: 2019 or later iMac Pro: 2017 or later Mac mini: 2018 or later Mac Studio: 2022 or later Mac Pro: 2019 or later There’s one big caveat to the macOS Sequoia compatibility list: In order to use Apple Intelligence features, the Mac requires an M1 chip or later. These features will not work on Intel Macs. In order to access the beta, sign in to an Apple ID that is registered as a developer and then, on your Mac, open System Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and choose the macOS Sequoia Developer beta. Apple is bringing ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI-powered chatbot experience, to Siri and other first-party apps and capabilities across its operating systems. From a report: "We're excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement. "Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI's mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone." Soon, Siri will be able to tap ChatGPT for "expertise" where it might be helpful, Apple says. For example, if you need menu ideas for a meal to make for friends using some ingredients from your garden, you can ask Siri, and Siri will automatically feed that info to ChatGPT for an answer after you give it permission to do so. You can include photos with the questions you ask ChatGPT via Siri, or ask questions related to your docs or PDFs. Apple's also integrated ChatGPT into system-wide writing tools like Writing Tools, which lets you create content with ChatGPT -- including images -- or ask an initial idea and send it to ChatGPT to get a revision or variation back. Apple said ChatGPT within Apple's apps is free and data isn't being shared with the Microsoft-backed firm. ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts and access paid features right from these experiences, the company said. Apple Intelligence -- Apple's efforts to combine the power of generative models with personal context -- is free to Apple device owners but works with "iOS 18" on iPhone 15 Pro, macOS 15 and iPadOS 17. One of the main highlights of this year’s WWDC was the announcement of “Apple Intelligence,” a new series of AI tools coming to iPhone, iPad, and Mac. However, although many devices can be updated to iOS 18 and macOS 15, only a few of them support the new Apple Intelligence features. more…07:54 pmiOS 18: The biggest new features coming to your iPhone this fall
Macworld Apple has taken the wraps off iOS 18, and it’s going to be a big update. With huge leaps to some of the most-used apps and huge new personalization features, plus a big heaping helping of AI, this might even be the biggest iOS release in years. From Game Mode to the new Passwords app, there are tons of new features coming to your iPhone this fall, but here are some of the most significant ways your iPhone will be elevated to the next level. Apple Intelligence takes Siri to the next level While Apple’s big new AI features are not exclusive to iOS (they’re coming to iPadOS and macOS as well), they will make a huge impact to the way we use our iPhones. Apple emphasized the privacy and personal nature of its AI. Siri is at the heart of it all, with a new look—a glowing border around the screen that lets you know Siri is listening. Communicating with Siri is more natural, with a better understanding of what you say even when you stumble over your words. It uses the information on your device to understand you better, maintains context to perform actions, and will ultimately be able to go from performing one action to another, performing contextual actions within apps. Siri’s got a new look with a glowing border effect. Siri’s got a new look with a glowing border effect.Apple Siri’s got a new look with a glowing border effect.Apple Apple As an example, you’ll be able to make detailed requests such as, “Show me photos of Stacy in New York wearing her pink coat,” and Siri will know who you mean from the data on your phone. Then you can say, “Make this photo pop,” and it will automatically optimize and enhance it. Or tell Siri, “Add this to my note of Stacy’s bio” and it will drop the image into the correct note in the Notes app. There are also new tools to help you instantly re-write or summarize messages, prioritize emails and messages, and even generate replies and messages. Apple’s got AI image generation tools, too. A new Image Playground app lets you experiment with creating images in three styles: sketch, illustration, or animation. It can generate custom “Genmojis” for anything you can dream up and uses context and photos on your phone to make stylized images of people you know. There’s an API for developers that allows this image generation tool to be used within other apps, too. Generate stylized images of people you know with Apple’s new AI tools. Generate stylized images of people you know with Apple’s new AI tools.Apple Generate stylized images of people you know with Apple’s new AI tools.Apple Apple For tasks that need to draw on wide general knowledge, Apple Intelligence will work seamlessly with ChatGPT-4o from OpenAI. Siri will be able to send your requests to ChatGPT after first asking your permission, without needing a separate account or log-in (though paid ChatGPT users can access advanced features). ChatGPT will also be integrated into the writing tools, so you can use it to generate larger blocks of text, for example. Apple promises support for other third-party AI models will come in the future. Apple’s AI features work on-device if you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max with an A17 Pro processor or an iPad or Mac with an M-series processor. If the AI system determines that a bigger and more advanced model is needed, a new private cloud server infrastructure built by Apple will send just the relevant data to be processed by a large model in the cloud. Data is never saved or accessible by Apple, and Apple even promises that its cloud server code will be inspected by outside experts to ensure it is keeping its privacy promises. There’s so much to say about Apple’s new AI features and ambitions, like the ability to record and then auto-summarize phone calls from right within the Phone app. Some features will launch in a beta state and only in English this fall, but additional features and languages will roll out over the coming year. More personalization Whether or not you have a phone that can take advantage of Apple Intelligence, you’ll be able to personalize your iPhone in all new ways. For starter you won’t need to follow the grid. In iOS 18, you can move icons and widgets around more freely on the Home screen, pushing them to the sides or bottom of the screen to see your custom wallpaper. There’s a new automatic Dark Mode shading for app icons, and if you want to dig in deeper, the new customization sheet lets you set a universal tint for all your app icons. You’ll be able to personalize your Home screen like never before in iOS 18. There will be multiple pages in iOS 18, with some dedicated to things like music playback or home controls. You can customize the pages to a greater degree, including resizing controls. A new developer API will let third-party developers create Control Center features, which you’ll be able to find and add from the new Controls Gallery. And you’ll finally be able to change the default icons on the Lock Screen as well. Customize your Control Center with a new Controls Gallery and third-party controls. First and foremost, you’ll be able to lock apps, so you can hand your iPhone to someone else without fear that they might get into an app you don’t want them to see. Locked apps won’t show notifications or appear in search or Spotlight suggestions. Locked and Hidden apps are long-requested privacy features, finally coming to iOS 18. Locked and Hidden apps are long-requested privacy features, finally coming to iOS 18.Apple Locked and Hidden apps are long-requested privacy features, finally coming to iOS 18.Apple Apple If you want even further privacy, you can entirely hide an app. It will go into a “hidden apps” folder in the App Library, and be invisible and inaccessible without Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Nobody else will even know it’s installed. Apple’s giving you greater control over which contacts your apps will have access to, just as it does with your photos library today, and a new tool for developers to connect to devices will let you add them without giving apps access to seeing every connected Bluetooth device and device on your Wi-Fi network. App updates There are lots of updates to some of the most-used Apple apps as part of iOS 18. Some are small. In Maps, for example, you get new topographical maps with hiking trails that can be downloaded to work offline. Others are big, like the changes to Messages. There’s RCS support, the ability to use any emoji or sticker as a tapback, message scheduling, and lots of text formatting options. Not only can you make words bold, italics, underlined, or strikethrough, but there are fun animated text effects as well. Some are automatically suggested depending on what you type, but you can pick the effects you want, too. You’ll be able to schedule messages to send at a future time. That’s now expanding to non-emergency messages, too. You can iMessage or even send SMS messages via satellite to anyone you want if you find yourself without service. Mail will get a new automatic mail categorization feature later this year. Apps will be put into one of four categories: primary, transactions, updates, and promotions. You can re-categorize an email easily or stick with an “All mail” view. A new “Digest view” will wrap together mails from the same sender, like flight info from an airline or orders from a retailer. The idea is to make it easier to quickly see all your interactions. And at long last, Reminders can show up on your Calendar. Mail Digests will group related mail from certain senders. You can customize the order and pin the collections you want. You can try out iOS 18 with a developer beta today or wait until next month when the more polished public beta arrives. Macworld Along with iOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS Sequoia, Apple today previewed iPadOS 18 during WWDC24’s jam-packed opening keynote. This upcoming OS update will pack a wide range of new features and changes, including a more customizable Home Screen, Apple Intelligence integration for M1, M2, and M4 models, a revamped Control Center, and much, much more. However, there’s one feature everyone will rush to try before anything else. iPadOS 18 will finally bring a native Calculator app to the latest iPads—an addition users have been requesting since its debut in 2010, more than 14 years ago. The iPad’s new Calculator might look simple, but it hides some powerful new features. Instead, it’s also bringing some advanced capabilities to it, which will turn it into an invaluable asset for students and other users. These include powerful features, most notably the all-new Math Notes features that supercharge the Apple Pencil with advanced capabilities. That’s right; with iPadOS 18, Apple is integrating the existing Notes app with the Calculator. As a result, iPad users will get to directly solve mathematical equations they scribble with Apple Pencil in the Notes app. All you have to do is write down the equation with your Apple Pencil and the moment you scribble the equal sign, the app will display the answer in the relevant spot. If you make a mistake, alerting the equation will change the displayed result instantly. (And if you have sloppy handwriting, iPadOS 18 will use machine learning to make numbers written with Apple Pencil clearer and even imitate users’ handwriting styles when displaying results.) Math Notes will turn your scribbled equations into dynamically updated graphs. The addition also supports formulas and graphs. In fact, just like equations, the graphs are interactive and will update in real time as users make adjustments to the relevant formulas. Add support for history, variables, and unit conversion to the equation, and you’ve got yourself a killer app that should make students’ lives easier. The integration between the Calculator and Notes apps on iPadOS 18 is truly one of the most notable changes of this update, sparing users the need to rely on third-party tools that often cost a premium. iPadOS 18 developer beta 1 will be available later today. iPad users who prefer waiting for the stable version can expect the final release later this fall. iPad07:33 pmThese are the new features coming to AirPods this year

Macworld Apple unveiled details of the new version of macOS – Sequoia – on June 10, 2024 and has made a beta version available for developers. If you are a registered developer this is what you need to do to get your hands on a copy. As with macOS Sonoma in 2023, this year the developer beta isn’t just available to developers who have paid to join Apple’s Developer Program (which costs $99/£79), Apple has opened it up to anyone who is a registered developer. We explain how to get a free developer account below. Beta software is likely to be buggy, especially this early in the testing process. The slightly more stable public beta version will also be made available for anyone who has signed up for the public beta program, but that version probably won’t be available until July. In this article, we’ll run through what you need to do to get your hands on the beta of the next version of the Mac operating system, how to install it, and what you should bear in mind if you don’t want to end up in a pickle. If you have not updated to the latest official release of macOS Sonoma here’s how to update macOS on your Mac. The beta program will continue even after Apple has released macOS 15 in the fall. Not every promised feature will be available at launch so Apple will continue to work on development of macOS 15 into the summer of 2025 (at which point it will start work on macOS 16). If you are a member of Apple’s beta testing program you will be able to try out the new features before they arrive on everyone else’s Macs. If you no longer want to run the beta version of macOS read this: How to remove the macOS beta. macOS beta latest version The first version of the Sequoia developer beta of macOS 15 arrived after the WWDC keynote on June 10, 2024. Apple has confirmed the first public beta of Sequoia will arrive in July. In 2023 the public beta arrived on July 12. Foundry Foundry Foundry macOS public beta vs developer beta Since 2023 the Developer Beta has been available to anyone who registers as a developer, even if they aren’t a paid-up member of Apple’s Developer Program. As a result, people with a basic free developer account are able to download the new macOS developer beta (we show you how to register below). Whether you should download the developer beta if you aren’t a developer is another question. We don’t recommend you install the developer beta if you aren’t a developer. Instead, our recommendation is to wait for the public beta, which is likely to arrive in July. There are a few differences between the public and developer betas. The public beta is not the same as the beta that is released through the developer program. Developers get updates to their beta first, and possibly more frequently. But you should keep in mind that betas are by nature not stable, and because the public beta comes after the developer beta it could be a little safer to install. The most significant difference is probably the motive of the testers: Developers usually have the aim of ensuring their apps work when the updated macOS is released to the general public, while public beta testers are essentially helping Apple detect bugs and offering feedback on the features. Because of this developers may get to test new features not available in the public beta. If you want to get the public beta the first thing you need to do, if you haven’t already, is join Apple’s beta programs read this for more information: How to become an Apple beta tester. Apple Apple Apple How to get a free developer account If you just want a free Apple Developer account so you can access the beta you can get this via Xcode or the Apple Developer app in iOS. Here’s how to do it via the Apple Developer app on an iPhone: Get the Apple Developer App from the App Store. Open the app on your iPhone. Tap on Account. Tap on Sign In. Sign in using your usual Apple ID. If you wish to actually publish applications to the App Store or receive support, you’ll need to pay $99/£79 per year for a paid account. You can compare the free and paid accounts here. How to get the macOS beta The Sequoia developer beta should show up on your Mac if you are running macOS Sonoma, have paid $99/£79 to enroll in Apple’s Developer program (here) or if you have a free developer account (follow the instructions above). When the Public Beta becomes available it will also show up on your Mac, as long as you have signed up for the Public Beta program on Apple’s beta webpage, signed the NDA, and enrolled your Mac. Before you download a few warnings: We strongly advise that if you aren’t a developer you don’t download the developer beta. We also strongly recommend that you back up your Mac before you upgrade to the Sequoia beta. We recommend that you do not run Sequoia beta on your primary Mac; ideally, you run it in a separate volume. This should minimize any risks to you. Open Software Updates on your Mac. (System Settings > General > Software Updates.) You should see two options: Automatic Updates and Beta Updates. Click on the (i) beside Beta Updates. You can now turn on Beta Updates (if they weren’t already on). Choose the beta you want to download. If your developer account is tied to a different Apple ID to your usual one you can change that here. Click Done. Now your Mac will Check for updates and eventually show the Sequoia Developer Beta as an upgrade. Click on Upgrade Now. Foundry Foundry Foundry If you are running macOS Ventura 13.3 or earlier: Apple changed the way it delivers betas in Ventura 13.4. If you aren’t yet running that version of macOS you will need to download the macOS Developer Beta Access Utility or macOS Public Beta Access Utility. If you were already running an earlier macOS Public Beta you’ll find the new macOS beta as an upgrade via Software Update. Just click on Upgrade Now. You may have to update to the latest version of your current beta before you can do so, if not follow the steps below to get the beta access utility. If you are enrolled in the Developer Program, go to Apple’s beta download page. Click on Install Profile to download the new macOS Developer Beta Access Utility to your Mac. If you are enrolled as a public beta tester, download the macOS Public Beta Access Utility. Go to Downloads on your Mac and click on the macOS Beta Access Utility to open it. Double-click on the dmg file and the installer will run. Once the new macOS beta is installed Software Update will check to see if there are any updates. Click Update and the latest version will download. You’ll see a prompt to install the latest macOS beta, click on Continue. Agree to the Ts&Cs (more on them below). Click Install. How to update macOS beta versions Once you are running the beta the updates will come through to your Mac automatically, you just need to click to install. You will receive a notification when the next update to the beta is available. Updates will be available via Software Update (in System Settings/System Preferences) Everything else you need to know about beta testing That covers how to get the betas, but once you have them what can you do, and what should you do? We’ll cover that below. Is the macOS beta stable? By its nature, a beta has the potential to be unstable. Therefore it’s not advised that you install it on a Mac that you rely on. If you have a second Mac that isn’t mission-critical then install it there. We strongly recommend that you don’t risk all by putting the macOS beta on your primary macOS, especially not in the early days of the beta development. If you don’t have a second Mac there are a couple of ways you could run macOS beta on your Mac without running the risk of losing data or finding your Mac stops working: We recommend installing it on a partition – which these days is really a volume (and is much easier to create than a partition was). Read about how to do that here: How to dual-boot Mac: Run two versions of macOS on a Mac. Alternatively, you could install the macOS beta on an external drive and run it on that. We discuss the safety of the macOS beta and the risks you might be taking in more detail in a separate article. If the stability of the beta worries you then you are probably better off waiting until the final version is out, or at least waiting until testing has been happening for a few months before getting the beta. How to prepare your Mac for the beta Update your software: We recommend you have the latest full version of macOS installed, although Apple says that the macOS Developer Beta Access Utility requires macOS 10.8 or later. Make space: We’d recommend at least 15GB of available space because the macOS betas tend to be very large. If you end up requiring more space read: How to free up space on Mac. Note that we always recommend that you have at least 10% space free on your Mac at any time, so if you don’t have that expect problems! Back up: Before you install a beta on your Mac you should make a backup of your data and files. You can find out how to use Time Machine to back up your Mac. We also have a round-up of suitable backup solutions. How to send feedback to Apple Should you come across an error or a bug you should use the Feedback Assistant app to provide feedback to Apple. Launch the app and follow the appropriate steps, selecting the area about which you’re providing feedback and then any specific sub-area. Then describe your issue in a single sentence, before providing a more detailed description, including any specific steps that reproduce the issue. You’ll also be able to attach other files. You’ll also have to give permission for the Feedback Assistant app to collect diagnostic information from your Mac. It won’t always be obvious whether something is a bug or just not as easy to use as you might have hoped. Either way, if your feedback is that something appears to work in an illogical way, Apple will want to know that. If you are having trouble with a third-party app you can let Apple know by reporting it through the 3rd-party Application Compatibility category in the Feedback Assistant. However, we’d suggest that you also provide feedback to the app’s developer who will no doubt be grateful. Will I be able to update from macOS beta to the final version? Beta users will be able to install the final build of the OS on release day without needing to reformat or reinstall. Can I talk about the beta publicly? According to Apple and the license agreement all beta testers must agree to, the beta is “Apple confidential information”. By accepting those terms, you agree not to discuss your use of the software with anyone who isn’t also in the Beta Software Program. That means you can’t “blog, post screenshots, tweet, or publicly post information about the public beta software.” However, you can discuss any information that Apple has publicly disclosed; the company says that information is no longer considered confidential. How to downgrade from the macOS beta You can always revert to an earlier version of macOS, though depending on how you back up, it’s not necessarily a painless process. Start by making sure the data on your drive is backed up, then erase the drive and install the latest public version of macOS. When you first startup your Mac you can use the Migration Assistant to import your data from the backup. Here’s a more detailed tutorial on downgrading from the macOS beta we also have a tutorial on downgrading to an older version of the Mac OS.
