Macworld At WWDC 2024 on June 10, Apple unveiled watchOS 11, the next operating system update for Apple Watch. The software brings new apps, new features, new face customization options, an upgraded Smart Stack, and extensive changes to the Apple Watch’s health and fitness functions. Here’s a taste of the new features coming to your Apple Watch later this year: New watch faces We’ll start with something that comes up nearly every year: new watch faces. Or perhaps we should say upgraded rather than new faces because this is a change to the existing Photos face. The way this will change in watchOS 11 is that you’ll be able to create custom faces more easily, thanks to assistance from the OS. The Watch will analyze thousands of your photos to make a recommendation of those that will work well as a face (based on composition, facial expression, and other factors) and then help you to crop and zoom to get the best positioning within the frame. You’ll get a range of personalization options beyond this, including font, layout, clock size, and more, and there’s also a Dynamic mode that will push a different photo each time you raise your wrist. Apple Apple Apple Fitness The Apple Watch’s main functions revolve around health and fitness, and it was no surprise that Apple focuses heavily on these areas in watchOS 11. On the fitness side, there’s a new metric called Training Load, designed to help users understand the strain that exercise places on the body and the way workouts are impacting their body. Workouts will be given an effort rating on a scale of 1 to 10, based on age, height, weight, heart rate, GPS data, and the workout type, but users can further modify this to account for factors such as stress. Then longer-term data can be used to analyze whether strain on the body “is ramping up, staying the same, or easing off so they can adjust their training for the best results.” watchOS 11 also brings the ability to pause Activity rings when you need a rest day or suffer an injury but don’t want to break a streak. (That’s a feature that’s been needed as long as Apple Watch has been a thing.) You can pause rings for as long as you want—a day, a week, even a month or more. Apple Apple Apple Those rings will also be more customizable than in the past. You can choose to modify the ring targets depending on the day of the week, so that calorie targets are lower on Sundays, for example, if that’s when you like to rest up. That’s another feature that’s been needed for a long time; it was always peculiar and inflexible for the Apple Watch to insist that your fitness patterns should be the same throughout the week. Another regular feature of watchOS updates is the addition of new workout types, and watchOS 11 is no exception. In this case the key factor is improvements in GPS positioning, which means more workout types can track distance and provide GPS map data, including Soccer, American Football, Lacrosse, Cross Country Skiing, Golf, Outdoor Rowing, and more. The Custom Workouts feature can now also be used for pool swims. Vitals There’s a new app for the Apple Watch, indeed a completely new app on any of Apple’s platforms, called Vitals. This brings together useful health-related metrics (including the new Training Load information discussed above) and makes them easy to browse in a single place. You can monitor your heart rate, for instance, and view how the current measurement compares to what’s typical for you. Outliers are flagged, in case they are worth checking with a medical professional, and the app explains what has changed from the norm and offers possible causes of this. Higher temperatures, for example, “could be due to many factors including illness or alcohol consumption.” Specifically, Apple says a notification can be triggered if two or more metrics are out of their typical range. Apple Apple Apple Pregnancy support Continuing the health and fitness focus, watchOS 11 (along with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18) is designed to support pregnant people “to reflect changes in their physical and mental health during this important time.” You’ll need to log the pregnancy in the Health app, and then the Apple Watch’s Cycle Tracking app will track gestational age, allow you to log symptoms, and prompt you to adjust the threshold for your high heart rate notification and similar features. Fall detection can adjust its sensitivity to account for the typically greater unsteadiness of pregnant people, while the Health app can be set to prompt the user to review their mental health on a regular basis. Translate Here’s another new app, but in this case it’s only new to Apple Watch. The Translate app uses machine learning to help you navigate conversations in other languages. (A total of 20 are supported.) This also provides Romanized pronunciation guides for languages using different alphabets. Apple Apple Apple Smart Stack Apple says the Smart Stack feature has become more capable. It can now feature Live Activities, enabling you to follow sports events or the progress of your Uber driver. The feature can use information about your routine, as well as the time and location, to suggest appropriate widgets–such as a weather-alert widget when bad weather is on the way. And there are new widgets based on Shazam, Photos, Distance, and more. The Smart Stack can also suggest a relevant Translate widget when you travel to a different country and includes access to the Check In feature, which also comes to Apple Watch for the first time. Check In Speaking of which… this useful personal-safety feature, previously available on iPhone as of the launch of iOS 17 last year, enables you to easily let friends and family know that you’ve reached your destination. And it now comes to the Apple Watch. It’s been integrated into the Workout app, which sounds perfect for those embarking on late-night runs, as well as Messages (as on the iPhone). Apple Apple Apple What about Apple Intelligence? The Apple Watch’s new Translate app and the Photos watch face customization algorithm each rely on machine learning, but it was notable at WWDC that the Apple Watch is getting far less access to Apple’s new AI developments, at least in this first wave. The Apple Intelligence features are coming to the iPhone, the iPad, and the Mac… but the Apple Watch wasn’t mentioned. It’s likely that watchOS will become part of Apple Intelligence at some point, but not yet. With one minor exception: Apple says “Summarised notifications, powered by Apple Intelligence, will be forwarded from iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to Apple Watch.” Compatibility watchOS 11 is available for the Apple Watch Series 6 and later. Apple Watch Series 6 Apple Watch Series 7 Apple Watch Series 8 Apple Watch SE (2nd gen) Apple Watch Ultra Apple Watch Series 9 Apple Watch Ultra 2 That’s a big jump; watchOS 9 and 10 were both Series 4 and later, so both models have been removed from support. And in fact the 1st-gen Apple Watch SE has been dropped as well, even though it came out at the same time as the Series 6. watchOS 11 is available as a developer beta right away and a public beta will become available in July. The final version of watchOS 11 will roll out to the public in the fall. Apple Watch08:31 pmwatchOS 11 adds long-awaited fitness features

Macworld Apple on Monday revealed macOS Sequoia, the next version of the Mac operating system. Version 15 of macOS is loaded with AI features, many of which are also in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Apple highlighted the following macOS 15 features during the keynote. iPhone Mirroring Mac users are iPhone users, and the two have often felt like separate platforms. iPhone Mirroring closes that gap, allowing users to directly access their iPhones on their Mac desktop. The Mac and iPhone connect wirelessly and users see the iPhone Home screen on the Mac. Users can click and use iPhone apps, iPhone app notifications can be activated and the appropriate iPhone app launches. Users can also drag and drop photos and videos from the iPhone to the Mac. The iPhone audio will come through the Mac’s sound output, and iPhone notifications will integrate with the macOS notifications list. Apple Apple Apple Tiled UI for organizing windows Mac users work in multiple apps and files at once, which can result in window organization being a chore unto itself. In macOS Sequoia, users can now drag a window to the edge of the screen and macOS will suggest a tiled view of your open windows. Tiles can be arranged side by side or in a corner arrangement. New keyboard shortcuts can be used to mange the tiles. Apple Apple Apple New Password app Apple is finally providing a better way to access passwords and other information stored in Keychain by introducing a new Passwords app. Data in the app is encrypted and can sync with other devices through iCloud, and can even sync with Windows via the iCloud for Windows app. Safari The new Highlights feature offers a way to get information related to the webpage you are visiting. For example, if you are booking a hotel room, Safari offers a way to quickly get directions on Maps. The Reader feature now offers a summary and table of contents to quickly access the webpage’s content. The new Viewer kicks in when a video is detected on a webpage and includes a full set of controls and the ability to set the video in Picture-in-Picture mode. Video conferencing improvements With macOS Sequoia, Apple introduces new features that can be used in video conferencing apps such as FaceTime and Zoom. Presenters can now see a preview of their slides so they can make sure their presentation is going as planned. Participants can now customize their background with a macOS wallpaper or a personal photo. Apple Intelligence features Apple has implemented a ton of AI-based features that work across macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18. Here’s brief summary of what will be available: Writing tools: In apps such as Mail, Pages, Notes, and others, written content will have several features available, including suggestions for revisions, proofreading and copy editing, and more. Mail will offer email summarizations and smart replies. Image Playground: apps will be able to create images in one of three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. In Messages, Image Playground can be used to create personalized images; in Notes, Image Playground can be used to transform sketches into polished pictures. Photos: New tools in the Photos app allow users to find photos based on a set of characteristics–show me pictures with a basketball,” for example. A new Clean Up tool can be used to remove items from a picture. Siri: Many Apple Intelligence features are implemented through Siri, which will have a better understanding of contextual commands, and will be able to perform functions based on the context of its use. How to install macOS Sequoia Apple released the beta of macOS Sequoia to developers, with a public beta arriving in July. The official release is set for the fall and is free to all users. The new OS is compatible with the following Macs: MacBook Air: 2020 or later MacBook Pro: 2018 or later iMac: 2019 or later iMac Pro: 2017 or later Mac mini: 2018 or later Mac Studio: 2022 or later Mac Pro: 2019 or later There’s one big caveat to the macOS Sequoia compatibility list: In order to use Apple Intelligence features, the Mac requires an M1 chip or later. These features will not work on Intel Macs. In order to access the beta, sign in to an Apple ID that is registered as a developer and then, on your Mac, open System Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and choose the macOS Sequoia Developer beta. MacOS08:00 pmApple Brings ChatGPT To Its Apps, Including Siri
Apple is bringing ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI-powered chatbot experience, to Siri and other first-party apps and capabilities across its operating systems. From a report: "We're excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement. "Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI's mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone." Soon, Siri will be able to tap ChatGPT for "expertise" where it might be helpful, Apple says. For example, if you need menu ideas for a meal to make for friends using some ingredients from your garden, you can ask Siri, and Siri will automatically feed that info to ChatGPT for an answer after you give it permission to do so. You can include photos with the questions you ask ChatGPT via Siri, or ask questions related to your docs or PDFs. Apple's also integrated ChatGPT into system-wide writing tools like Writing Tools, which lets you create content with ChatGPT -- including images -- or ask an initial idea and send it to ChatGPT to get a revision or variation back. Apple said ChatGPT within Apple's apps is free and data isn't being shared with the Microsoft-backed firm. ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts and access paid features right from these experiences, the company said. Apple Intelligence -- Apple's efforts to combine the power of generative models with personal context -- is free to Apple device owners but works with "iOS 18" on iPhone 15 Pro, macOS 15 and iPadOS 17. Macworld Apple has taken the wraps off iOS 18, and it’s going to be a big update. With huge leaps to some of the most-used apps and huge new personalization features, plus a big heaping helping of AI, this might even be the biggest iOS release in years. From Game Mode to the new Passwords app, there are tons of new features coming to your iPhone this fall, but here are some of the most significant ways your iPhone will be elevated to the next level. Apple Intelligence takes Siri to the next level While Apple’s big new AI features are not exclusive to iOS (they’re coming to iPadOS and macOS as well), they will make a huge impact to the way we use our iPhones. Apple emphasized the privacy and personal nature of its AI. Siri is at the heart of it all, with a new look—a glowing border around the screen that lets you know Siri is listening. Communicating with Siri is more natural, with a better understanding of what you say even when you stumble over your words. It uses the information on your device to understand you better, maintains context to perform actions, and will ultimately be able to go from performing one action to another, performing contextual actions within apps. Siri’s got a new look with a glowing border effect. Siri’s got a new look with a glowing border effect.Apple Siri’s got a new look with a glowing border effect.Apple Apple As an example, you’ll be able to make detailed requests such as, “Show me photos of Stacy in New York wearing her pink coat,” and Siri will know who you mean from the data on your phone. Then you can say, “Make this photo pop,” and it will automatically optimize and enhance it. Or tell Siri, “Add this to my note of Stacy’s bio” and it will drop the image into the correct note in the Notes app. There are also new tools to help you instantly re-write or summarize messages, prioritize emails and messages, and even generate replies and messages. Apple’s got AI image generation tools, too. A new Image Playground app lets you experiment with creating images in three styles: sketch, illustration, or animation. It can generate custom “Genmojis” for anything you can dream up and uses context and photos on your phone to make stylized images of people you know. There’s an API for developers that allows this image generation tool to be used within other apps, too. Generate stylized images of people you know with Apple’s new AI tools. Generate stylized images of people you know with Apple’s new AI tools.Apple Generate stylized images of people you know with Apple’s new AI tools.Apple Apple For tasks that need to draw on wide general knowledge, Apple Intelligence will work seamlessly with ChatGPT-4o from OpenAI. Siri will be able to send your requests to ChatGPT after first asking your permission, without needing a separate account or log-in (though paid ChatGPT users can access advanced features). ChatGPT will also be integrated into the writing tools, so you can use it to generate larger blocks of text, for example. Apple promises support for other third-party AI models will come in the future. Apple’s AI features work on-device if you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max with an A17 Pro processor or an iPad or Mac with an M-series processor. If the AI system determines that a bigger and more advanced model is needed, a new private cloud server infrastructure built by Apple will send just the relevant data to be processed by a large model in the cloud. Data is never saved or accessible by Apple, and Apple even promises that its cloud server code will be inspected by outside experts to ensure it is keeping its privacy promises. There’s so much to say about Apple’s new AI features and ambitions, like the ability to record and then auto-summarize phone calls from right within the Phone app. Some features will launch in a beta state and only in English this fall, but additional features and languages will roll out over the coming year. More personalization Whether or not you have a phone that can take advantage of Apple Intelligence, you’ll be able to personalize your iPhone in all new ways. For starter you won’t need to follow the grid. In iOS 18, you can move icons and widgets around more freely on the Home screen, pushing them to the sides or bottom of the screen to see your custom wallpaper. There’s a new automatic Dark Mode shading for app icons, and if you want to dig in deeper, the new customization sheet lets you set a universal tint for all your app icons. You’ll be able to personalize your Home screen like never before in iOS 18. There will be multiple pages in iOS 18, with some dedicated to things like music playback or home controls. You can customize the pages to a greater degree, including resizing controls. A new developer API will let third-party developers create Control Center features, which you’ll be able to find and add from the new Controls Gallery. And you’ll finally be able to change the default icons on the Lock Screen as well. Customize your Control Center with a new Controls Gallery and third-party controls. First and foremost, you’ll be able to lock apps, so you can hand your iPhone to someone else without fear that they might get into an app you don’t want them to see. Locked apps won’t show notifications or appear in search or Spotlight suggestions. Locked and Hidden apps are long-requested privacy features, finally coming to iOS 18. Nobody else will even know it’s installed. Apple’s giving you greater control over which contacts your apps will have access to, just as it does with your photos library today, and a new tool for developers to connect to devices will let you add them without giving apps access to seeing every connected Bluetooth device and device on your Wi-Fi network. App updates There are lots of updates to some of the most-used Apple apps as part of iOS 18. Some are small. In Maps, for example, you get new topographical maps with hiking trails that can be downloaded to work offline. Others are big, like the changes to Messages. There’s RCS support, the ability to use any emoji or sticker as a tapback, message scheduling, and lots of text formatting options. Not only can you make words bold, italics, underlined, or strikethrough, but there are fun animated text effects as well. Some are automatically suggested depending on what you type, but you can pick the effects you want, too. You’ll be able to schedule messages to send at a future time. That’s now expanding to non-emergency messages, too. You can iMessage or even send SMS messages via satellite to anyone you want if you find yourself without service. Mail will get a new automatic mail categorization feature later this year. Apps will be put into one of four categories: primary, transactions, updates, and promotions. You can re-categorize an email easily or stick with an “All mail” view. A new “Digest view” will wrap together mails from the same sender, like flight info from an airline or orders from a retailer. The idea is to make it easier to quickly see all your interactions. And at long last, Reminders can show up on your Calendar. Mail Digests will group related mail from certain senders. You can customize the order and pin the collections you want. You can try out iOS 18 with a developer beta today or wait until next month when the more polished public beta arrives.
