Macworld Gaming subscription services are all the rage now, but Apple Arcade isn’t quite like PlayStation Plus, EA Play, or Xbox Game Pass. So if you’ve got questions about it, we’ve got plenty of answers. Updated 06/07/24: Four new games were added to Apple Arcade on June 6: Fabulous – Wedding Disaster+, Rabbids Multiverse, Return to Monkey Island+, and Tomb of the Mask+. What is Apple Arcade? Apple Arcade is a gaming subscription service for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AppleTV that features more than 200 games. The games are a mix of genres and styles, and include original games you’ll only find on the service and others that can be found on the regular App Store or even other platforms. Apple Arcade isn’t a streaming service like Xbox Live Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW. Games must be downloaded onto your device in order to be played. What do I need to run it? Apple Arcade was made available as part of iOS 13, iPad OS 13, tvOS 13, and macOS Catalina or later. Some of the more visually-intensive games may only run well on newer hardware, though, and some Mac games require macOS 11 (Big Sur). How much does Apple Arcade cost? Apple Arcade costs $6.99 per month, and you’ll also get a one-month free trial. If you’re currently on the $6.99 month-to-month plan and want to switch to the annual plan, you can do so on your iPhone or iPad. Open the App Store app, then tap your account icon in the upper right. Tap Subscriptions, then tap the entry for Apple Arcade. Here, you can switch to the annual plan. Apple Arcade is also included in the Apple One subscription bundles, which range from $20 a month to $38 a month. How do I sign up for Apple Arcade? There isn’t an Apple Arcade app—it’s built into the App Store. On your iPhone, iPad, or Mac open the App Store and look for the Apple Arcade tab at the bottom of the screen (or in the left column on macOS). A sign-up screen with a Try It Free button will appear. After the trial you’ll be charged either the monthly or annual fee, depending on your selection. When subscribing, you’ll need to enter your Apple ID password or use Touch ID or Face ID to sign in, and you’ll have to confirm your subscription purchase a few times. Once you’re done with the sign up, the Arcade section of the App Store shows what games are available to you. To access a game, tap on it in the App Store, then tap the Get button. When the game is done installing on your device, the Get button turns into a Play button, and you can tap it to launch the game. The game app icon will also appear on your device’s Home page. On the Apple TV, there actually is an Arcade app. Open that to see the sign-up offer. You’ll also find an Arcade tab within the App Store. Does my subscription include family sharing? Yes. One $6.99 per month subscription can be shared between up to six people (including you). How do I cancel Apple Arcade? First off, keep in mind that if you cancel Apple Arcade (either before your free trial is up or after subscribing), you won’t be able to keep playing the games unless you re-subscribe. If you’re okay with that, you can use the same process you use to cancel any other subscription service. Here’s the easiest way to do it on the iPhone and iPad: Open the App Store app and tap on your profile photo in the upper right. In the screen that pops up, press Subscriptions near the top of the page. You’ll then see a list of active subscriptions, and Apple Arcade should be listed there. Tap it. You’ll either see Cancel Free Trial or Cancel Subscription toward the middle of the page that appears. Tap whatever option is available, then Confirm Cancellation. And here’s how to cancel Apple Arcade on the Mac: Open the App Store app and then press the icon with your profile photo in the lower left. The Account window will appear, and you should then click View Information at the top of the window. Enter your password when/if prompted. When your Account Information appears, scroll down to the Manage section and click the Manage link to the right of Subscriptions. When the list of your active subscriptions appears, click Edit to the right of Apple Arcade. Toward the middle of the page that appears, you’ll see a button that says either Cancel Free Trial or Cancel Subscription. Click it, then click Confirm Cancellation and Confirm. How do I access Apple Arcade games? Apple Arcade is its own tab in the App Store. You can find games to download there, and grab anything you like without fear of being charged, seeing ads, or having to later buy in-app purchases. Once downloaded, Apple Arcade games are found just like any other app on your device. You’ll find this tab on the Mac, too. You’ll find this tab on the Mac, too. You’ll find this tab on the Mac, too. Does Apple curate the games on Apple Arcade? Yes. Apple says it is “handpicking the games in Apple Arcade” and that it curates them “based on originality, quality, creativity, fun, and their appeal to players of all ages.” Do Apple Arcade games have in-app purchases? No. In Apple’s words, “since every game includes access to the full experience, including all game features, content, and future updates, no additional purchases will be required.” Even games that have in-app purchases on the App Store won’t have any in Apple Arcade. Do Apple Arcade games have ads? Also no. On a related note, Apple says Apple Arcade has no ad tracking. Is Apple Arcade a game streaming service like Google’s Stadia or Xbox Game Streaming? No. All Apple Arcade are downloaded. Are Apple Arcade games available on other systems? Apple Arcade games were originally exclusive to Apple Arcade—not in the regular App Store nor on any other mobile platform. Some would appear on PC or consoles, but never in a subscription service. Apple has since relaxed that policy somewhat, and you can find games in Apple Arcade that also exist in the regular App Store or on Android. They are usually denoted by a “+” at the end, to differentiate the Apple Arcade version (free to download with your subscription, and free from ads or in-app purchases) from the App Store version. For example Mini Metro (App Store) vs. Mini Metro+ (Apple Arcade). Will I still be able to buy games on the App Store without an Apple Arcade subscription? Yes. There’s no sign that the existing games model will be going away, as it works fine for freemium games like Idle Heroes or Toon Blast. Apple is focusing on “handpicked” games for Apple Arcade, so there’s little doubt that the library will be much smaller than the thousands of games available in the App Store. Are there demos for Apple Arcade games? No, and they’re not really necessary. Like App Store apps, games download quickly and can easily be removed if you don’t want to keep it anymore. Apple partly envisions Apple Arcade as a way of letting players try out games with more freedom than the App Store currently allows (which is basically none). In Apple’s words, “rather than pay upfront for each game, a subscription to Apple Arcade will give players the opportunity to try any game in the service without risk.” The service has a free trial, though, as we’ve seen with both Apple Music and Apple News+. Am I able to keep playing Apple Arcade games if I cancel my subscription? No. As with most subscription services, you only have access while you’re a subscriber. Can I use controllers with Apple Arcade games? Yes. In additional to traditional MFi (Made for iOS) controllers, you can pair some specific Bluetooth controllers for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with either your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Since many Apple Arcade games are playable on Mac and Apple TV (where controller support is more common), many games will support them. Some games, especially those that are also available in the broader App Store and only for iPhone or iPad, have no controller support. Recently Apple relaxed the requirements for MFi controller certification, which may have grown out of the Apple Arcade negotiations. Recently Apple relaxed the requirements for MFi controller certification, which may have grown out of the Apple Arcade negotiations. Recently Apple relaxed the requirements for MFi controller certification, which may have grown out of the Apple Arcade negotiations. How often are new games released? Games are typically released on Fridays, but not every Friday. The release schedule is sporadic—some Fridays there are no new games released, some see one game released, some more than one. Sometimes there will be no new game release, but existing games will get a big update with new content and features. On average, new games are released at a rate of about one every 2-3 weeks, though this may improve as Apple has loosened the rules around Apple Arcade exclusivity. What games have been released so far? There are over 200 games available for Apple Arcade, and the list grows all the time. Macworld The second-biggest day in Apple’s calendar is almost here. On Monday, thee annual WWDC event kicks off with a keynote presentation, where all the major changes to the company’s software platforms will be announced to watching app developers… and the world’s media. There could be a few hardware surprises too. Most people will have to wait until Monday to find out what Apple has in store for us. But Macworld readers can get that information right now, thanks to sterling detective work from the people we pay to rifle through the trashcans at Apple Park. Once again, they’ve come up with a complete, albeit rather coffee-stained draft of the script for the event, which we’re pleased to publish here. From iOS 18 and macOS 15 Golden Gate to the future of AI, we’ve got all the WWDC 2024 spoilers you could possibly want. In other words, if you want to be surprised, stop reading and watch the WWDC keynote live at 10 am on Monday, June 10. (For the avoidance of doubt, and to hopefully minimize the number of angry emails, this is not real. The script below is a mixture of educated guesses based on leaks and past behavior, and silly jokes based on the mannerisms we’ve noticed at Apple events. Some of this will turn out to be accurate; some will be wrong. Please don’t take it too seriously.) Introduction 09:57 am PT: The pre-stream starts. Struggling to name the musical accompaniment? It is, of course, the toe-tapping pop hit “Platitude Queen” by Mrs Boothroyd’s Holiday Dancer. (By the way, Apple has already released a WWDC 2024 playlist.) 10:00: Here we go. The video stream is starting! And the camera zooms through the sky before alighting in the grassy bit in the center of Apple Park where Tim Cook stands like an affable android. 10:01: Cook wishes us a good morning and promises a week of “innovation and courage in service of the user experience going forward.” He says Apple has a history of making great products and this is underpinned by great software. We’re going to be talking about the iPhone, the iPad, the Apple Watch, and the Mac. (Sad faces among the Apple TV fandom.) 10:03: “Synergy means innovation and security going forward,” says Cook, bafflingly, before adding that technology must be for humans, not merely for profit. Apple, he says, is aware of the pressure to deliver on the AI hype, but will only do so if it makes the world a better place. iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 10:05: Cook tosses it over to Craig Federighi to talk about “The biggest leap in iOS. Ever.” Federighi is dressed up as the Terminator and rides onto the virtual set on a motorbike. It’s time to talk about iOS 18. 10:07: Federighi begins by making it clear that Apple has been a leader in AI for years already, and then says AI is going to take iOS to the next level. The buzzwords are: Personal, Private, Powerful. 10:08: “And it all starts with Siri.” Federighi reminds everyone how Apple was first with an AI assistant and launches into an example of how the all-new Siri was “built from the ground up” to be more powerful, personal, and private than ever before. Siri will be able to perform all sorts of common tasks or respond to requests for information, showcasing a much more natural conversational flow and human-sounding vocal style. 10:10: John Giannandrea is introduced to talk about all the work Apple does on AI. He describes the AI hardware in most Apple devices and the big cloud infrastructure they’re building to keep your data secure. He explains that many Siri requests are handled entirely on-device, but “for more complex requests” the company has special cloud servers with a process to keep everything secure and private, even from Apple itself. “It’s the most private and secure cloud processing in the world,” he says. 10:14: Apple announces a partnership with ChatGPT to bring “its most advanced model” natively to iOS, to augment Siri’s advanced privacy features. 10:15: AI is going to permeate Apple’s apps and services, and the first example is Messages. Apple reminds us that iMessage is the most secure and private way to message, and introduces new AI features: custom emoji based on what you type, and new auto-reply and auto-complete features that are based on your prior messages, so they sound more like you. 10:18: Next up is Photos, where Apple reminds us (or attempts to persuade us) that it has been a leader in AI for years. New generative AI features include the ability to remove background objects with just a tap or to take a photo and change its style–cartoon, painting, etc. 10:22: Apple says AI is only important if it can help you really get stuff done. An example is Notes, where you can now make voice recordings and they’ll be transcribed by AI. Another is Apple Music, where a new Smart DJ feature looks at your song playback history, location, time of day, and more to put together the perfect mix for you. It runs entirely on-device, too. 10:25: Safari gets its own breakout section, showing off new features to automatically summarize web pages, an AI-powered search assistant, and a “magic eraser” that can remove parts of web pages every time you visit them. 10:28: iOS 18 is going to be “the most personal iOS ever” as Apple demonstrates a more customizable home screen, Control Center, and lock screen. More ways to make your iPhone truly yours. 10:31: The “personal, private, powerful” message extends to the new CarPlay, which was already announced (and promised by the end of 2023) but isn’t yet in any shipping vehicles. Apple gives a better demo and name-drops several vehicles coming this fall with the new system. It is pitched not only as the best way to customize your driving experience but to keep all your data on your phone, secure and private. 10:35: Apple doesn’t have a lot of exclusive new features for iPadOS 18, but it points out some improvements to Stage Manager and uses iPad to showcase Pages, Numbers, and Keynote upgrades that will come to other platforms as well. AI can help you write, make charts, make slides, and more. 10:38: Apple uses iPad to show the new improvements in Mail, too. They include a slew of interface tweaks, AI to help you write emails, and even an AI-powered inbox that will help you prioritize and organize your email. One of Craig Federighi’s many WWDC looks. One of Craig Federighi’s many WWDC looks.Apple One of Craig Federighi’s many WWDC looks.Apple Apple watchOS 11 10:41: After a dazzling transition, Federighi is now dressed as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz. (Some sort of robot/artificial intelligence theme tonight, perhaps?) He is wearing an Apple Watch and a worried expression. “I don’t think the sophisticated health monitoring features in my Apple Watch Ultra 2 are working properly!” he wails. “Oh wait! I haven’t got a heart. Phew!” This seems to be the watchOS 11 section. 10:43: It’s a shame there’s no live audience, really, because Federighi is exactly the sort of speaker who would draw energy from a crowd. 10:44: We’re talking Apple Watch, and how much it has changed since the first model back in 2015. Federighi admits that Apple didn’t truly understand the device for the first few years and that watchOS had to evolve to accommodate what users needed. “And this year watchOS evolves into our greatest smartwatch operating system yet!” That seems… self-evident, but Federighi sells it with his usual enthusiasm. 10:47: AI will enable the Apple Watch to become your personal healthcare companion. (Wait, is that phrase from a movie?) watchOS 11 will learn your habits, the things you eat and drink, the way you exercise, your sleep patterns, and more, and use these data points to target ways for you to improve your health. 10:50: If you choose to enable the feature, the Apple Watch will speak helpful tips out loud, such as “Maybe don’t drink that,” “Have you considered going for a run?” and “Did you know that sleep is a thing people do?” Siri’s new human-sounding delivery is going to be vital in this not becoming madly annoying. 10:53: Your data will be secure and private, we are told. And all of watchOS 11’s AI processing will take place on-device. That’s reassuring, particularly for those in countries that depend on health insurance. 10:54: watchOS is also gaining a new app. Well, not exactly a new app… It’s Notes! As we pointed out back in March, having the ability to speak and store notes on the go would be extremely useful. 10:57: watchOS 11 is in developer beta right now, and will launch to the public “in the fall.” macOS 15 10:58: Now Federighi is switching to the macOS 15 portion of the keynote. He doesn’t look fazed at all after going on and on for an hour about Siri and iOS 18 and watchOS 11 and his hair still looks thick and luxurious. (This is pre-recorded, not live, so he really ought to look good. Maybe his hair is generated by AI?) This is definitely the Craig Federighi show. 11:00: As if on cue, at exactly the hour mark, Federighi is hyping up the “legendary crack product marketing team” (which is what he’s called them for as long as we can remember) that “traveled far and wide” to find the proper California location that is befitting of a macOS name. Federighi’s build-up to the reveal talks about how the marketing team was lured by the aroma of Dungeness crab and sourdough bread as they traversed the hilly landscape on cars of both the cable and (ironically) self-driving variety through the fog to get to the destination that finds itself as the name of the next Mac operating system: macOS 15 Golden Gate. (Side note: There’s an AI tie-in with the name! San Francisco is one of the top locations for AI companies, and according to the State of California, San Francisco, and San Jose account for “a quarter of all Al patents, conference papers, and companies globally.” Our interpretation: macOS 15 is a bridge from OSes of the past to AI-enhanced OSes of the future.) 11:03: A lot of what was featured for iOS 18 is also in macOS 15, and we’re now looking at a summary image of those features: Siri, Spotlight, Safari, Notes, Calendar and Reminders, on-device AI privacy, etc. 11:05: A new summary image appears that lists the new macOS 15 features. But there’s no time to write them all down because Federighi is now descending into “Apple’s secret underground lab.” He walks over to a Space Black 16-inch MacBook Pro that, unbeknownst to viewers, is using a pre-release M4 Max. (He’ll later reveal this little Easter egg in a November 2024 video interview with Marques Brownlee.) His hair is still impeccable. 11:07: Since most of these features were covered in the iOS 18 section, Federighi is quickly covering the same new features in macOS 15: AI-enhanced Siri, AI-enhanced Spotlight, AI-enhanced Messages and Mail, AI-enhanced Keynote, Numbers, and Pages, AI-enhanced Music playlists, AI-enhanced Photos tools, and he wraps up this cross-OS-features section with “and there’s a whole lot more” with a summary screen that lists other AI features. 11:11: But that’s not all! We’re now looking at a demo of the new Control Center and how new smart home controls are available. 11:13: A vociferous roar of approval comes from the audience as Federighi demonstrates the new Calculator! It looks like it can do all the maths! 11:16: Federighi is wrapping up the macOS 15 presentation. He says macOS 15 is the best version of macOS yet and the macOS 15 beta is available now with the official release “in the fall.” There’s a beat of a pause as we hope to hear Federighi introduce John Ternus to reveal Mac Studio and Mac Pro updates, but nope, not gonna happen. He wraps it up by saying, “And that’s macOS 15 Golden Gate.” No new Mac hardware. Instead, with his hair still lookin’ good, he’s switching to… Apple Apple Apple One More Thing 11:18: Tim Cook! Tim Cook is back. Is this the wrap-up? 11:19: Possibly. Cook is summarizing the announcements we’ve heard tonight, and how Apple intends to bring the power of AI to its users “responsibly, carefully, thoughtfully, and with innovation and synergy going forward.” The iPhone, the iPad, the Apple Watch, and the Mac “are about to become even more powerful,” he says. 11:21: Is that everything? It seems not… Cook just used the magic phrase. One More Thing! Keynote-drinking game players around the world just downed their craft beers. 11:22: It’s a new HomePod! And this time it has a screen. A proper screen for displaying track info, that is, not the shiny light show from previous models. 11:24: Okay, it’s not actually a HomePod. It’s called the Apple Hub. Cook says it will be the center of your home, coordinating appliances and security devices, streaming music and TV, and connecting you to colleagues and loved ones by FaceTime. 11:26: Most of all, Apple Hub is a demonstration of the power of AI. It will grow to understand your preferences and needs, adjust lighting, play music, offer information and hints, and launch apps when it thinks you will benefit from them. 11:28: Cook says the Hub will launch “later this year,” and that more information will be forthcoming down the line. And with that… 11:29: The keynote is over! Developers will now file off to a week of workshops and networking events, but the rest of us can now turn off and think about what we’ve learned. Apple's WWDC kicks off on Monday, detailing various anticipated features that Apple has been incrementally rolling out over the past several years. But what is it like to actually be an app developer in the Apple world of app platforms? What does it take to ship an app? How is WWDC useful to developers?Coding Swift in XcodeI've been attending WWDC since the days of iPod. A few times I paid to attend as a developer. The statute of limitations has since passed, so I can suggest that once I may have sort of walked in and stayed all week as stowaway. It was, and is, still hard to secure a ticket to WWDC. The number of attendees Apple can functionally accommodate is finite, despite lavish resources and global scale. An anonymous reader shares a report: Apple is expected to announce major artificial intelligence updates to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac next week during its Worldwide Developers Conference. Except Apple won't call its system artificial intelligence, like everyone else, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on Friday. The system will reportedly be called "Apple Intelligence," and allegedly will be made available to new versions of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems. Apple Intelligence, which is shortened to just AI, is reportedly separate from the ChatGPT-like chatbot Apple is expected to release in partnership with OpenAI. Apple's in-house AI tools are reported to include assistance in message writing, photo editing, and summarizing texts. Bloomberg reports that some of these AI features will run on the device while others will be processed through cloud-based computing, depending on the complexity of the task. The name feels a little too obvious. While this is the first we're hearing of an actual name for Apple's AI, it's entirely unsurprising that Apple is choosing a unique brand to call its artificial intelligence systems. Macworld The future of Apple technology will be revealed at WWDC24, and according to reports, the future requires some hefty hardware. Apple is expected to introduce Apple Intelligence, its feature set in its operating systems that implement AI technology. Apple Intelligence is designed to do as much as it can on your device and will rely on cloud computing only when it needs to. And because AI tech is processor intensive, it means that the latest features will run only on certain devices. Here are the hardware requirements for Apple Intelligence, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This information will be updated once Apple’s announcement becomes official. Apple AI iPhone requirements iPhone 15 Pro or later Apple AI iPad requirements iPad Air, iPad Pro (M1, M2) iPad Pro (M4) Apple AI Mac requirements MacBook Air/Pro (M1, M2, M3) iMac (M1, M3) Mac mini (M1, M2) Mac Studio (M1, M2) Mac Pro (M2) What happens if your hardware does not meet the requirements? Since these are the minimum requirements for using Apple’s AI features, we don’t know what happens if the hardware requirements have not been met. It’s also possible that some features won’t work with certain chips. Gurman reports that users will have to opt into Apple Intelligence, which makes it sound as if these features will not be on by default and won’t affect the overall experience. With that in mind, users with lesser hardware may still get new features in iOS 18 and macOS 15, just not the advanced AI ones. What about Apple Watch? Gurman didn’t mention the Apple Watch in his report, so it’s unclear whether the AI features will extend to watchOS 11. Do users have to use the Apple Intelligence features? According to Gurman, users need to opt into Apple Intelligence, which leads us to believe that users don’t have to use these features if they don’t want to. iOS, iPad, MacOS04:02 pmmacOS 15: Everything you need to know about the next big Mac update
Macworld The next version of the Mac operating system, macOS 15, is expected to make its debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off with a keynote on June 10. After a beta period, the official release occurs in the fall. Rumors of what macOS 15 will entail are scarce as usual–because software development doesn’t rely on third-party production and manufacturing like hardware does, rumors about macOS don’t happen often. But when rumors do leak, they will be tracked in this article. Here’s everything we know so far. Updated 6/7/24: Apple may call the macOS 15 AI feature set, Apple Intelligence.” macOS 15 release date: When will macOS 15 arrive? Since 2013, Apple has released macOS during the fall season in the U.S. The company has established a pattern of releasing iOS first, followed a few weeks later by macOS. Here are the release dates from the past five years. macOS 14 Sonoma: September 26, 2023 macOS 13 Ventura: October 24, 2022 macOS 12 Monterey: October 25, 2021 macOS 11 Big Sur: November 12, 2020 macOS 10.15 Catalina: October 7, 2019 Apple will unveil macOS 15 at WWDC during a keynote on June 10, where it will show off the biggest new features. Apple will also start the developer beta period at that time, followed by a public beta a few weeks later. Apple releases beta updates semi-weekly before the official release in the fall. macOS 15 compatibility: Which Macs will get macOS 15? No reports have been made about the macOS 15 compatibility list. On average, Macs get 6.6 years of macOS updates, with models older than that only receiving another year or two of security updates and bug fixes. Also read: How long do Macs last. The compatibility list is becoming a pressing concern for users of Intel Macs. After Apple introduced its M-series Macs, the company said it will continue to support Intel Macs for several years, but it did not offer specifics. The last Mac to switch from Intel to Apple Silicon was the Mac Pro last year. The clock is ticking on Intel Macs, but it’s likely that the last generation of Intel Macs will be on the macOS 15 compatibility list. Here is the current compatibility list for macOS Sonoma: iMac from 2019 and later Mac Pro from 2019 and later iMac Pro from 2017 Mac Studio from 2022 and later MacBook Air from 2018 and later Mac mini from 2018 and later MacBook Pro from 2018 and later Apple launched its first M1 Macs (MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro Mac mini) in late 2020, so some Intel models will still get another year of updates with macOS 15. the most likely candidates to drop support are the 2018 models and the iMac Pro. To find out which version of macOS and older Mac can run take a look at our macOS compatibility list. macOS 15 name: What will the new version be called? Ever since Apple stopped using jungle cats with macOS 10.9 Mavericks, it’s used California places to identify its annual OS updates. The last several years have been Sonoma, Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, and Catalina. We’re not sure yet what locale Apple will choose for macOS 15, but it has trademarked several unused place names, including Condor, Mammoth, Redwood, and Sequoia. macOS 15: Rumored new features It’s possible that macOS 15 may not have a lot of new features. Last November, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple shifted from developing new OS features to fixing bugs and improving performance. Since that report came a few months ago, Apple may have finished that task and returned to developing new features. Regardless, the switch impacted the development time for new features and that could mean macOS 15 has fewer than originally planned. AI everywhere Several reports over the past few months have stated that Apple is doing a lot of work towards AI, and that generative AI (using AI to create content) will have a big role in macOS. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in October 2023 that AI will be prominently featured in iOS 18 with macOS following at a later date. That seems to indicate that macOS 15 won’t get as many AI features as iOS 18. If macOS 15 doesn’t match iOS 18 feature for feature, it’s not known when Apple will bring those missing features over. It could decide to introduce them in updates throughout the year or wait until macOS 16 in 2025. iOS has long been Apple’s priority, so it won’t be surprising if macOS 15 doesn’t have the same new features as iOS 18. However, it’s nearly certain that macOS will have some new AI features baked in. Gurman reported that Apple is going to refer to its AI feature set as “Apple Intelligence.” One key characteristic of these features is that users will have to opt-in to use them. Gurman also reports that Macs will need at least an M1 chip or later. Apple Intelligence features will mostly be processed on the device, which is different from other platforms where AI processing is done in the cloud. But Apple Intelligence will be able to determine if cloud processing is needed and will use it when appropriate. Accessibility A report by MacRumors states the macOS 15 will have several new Accessibility features. These include Adaptive Voice Shortcuts, which activates accessibility features by speaking a phrase; a Live Speech enhancement that lets users create categories; and expanded app support for custom font sizes. Freeform Scenes MacRumors reports that the Freeform app will get a new feature called Freeform Scenes, which will let the user select specific sections on boards to ease navigation. Scenes will reportedly work with iCloud for sharing and editing. Redesigned Calculator app AppleInsider reports that Apple is working on a new Calculator app. It may be redesigned to resemble the iOS version, with new features including a history tape, revamped conversions, and a resizable window. Safari 18 AppleInsider reports that Safari 18, which will be in macOS 15, will include several new features, including AI-enhanced “Intelligent Search,” a “Web Eraser,” and a new page controls menu. An update in 2025 will provide an AI enhancement to Visual Lookup not just in Safari, but throughout the OS. Calendar and Reminders sync AppleInsider reports that the Calendar app will allow users to manage reminders from within the Calendar app, which will also have minor UI changes. System Settings UI tweaks AppleInsider reports that System Settings will have UI changes to make it easier for users to quickly get to frequently-accessed settings.
