- 07:08 pmThe Apple Car lives through the Ferrari Luce
Macworld If you’ve ever wondered what could’ve been with the Apple Car, you’ll now be able to satisfy your curiosity a bit. Ferrari on Monday announced the Luce, the company’s first electric vehicle. And the main designer behind the car’s cabin and controls is LoveFrom, the company headed by Apple’s former Chief Design Officer Jony Ive. Ferrari has posted several images of what the interior looks like, and you can’t help but think that this is a glimpse into how the Apple Car could have looked. Ferrari Ferrari Ferrari The look of the graphics and fonts is quintessential Ive, though some control panels seem more crowded than you expect. Ferrari’s announcement of a documentary about the Luce states that Ive was involved in “key interface components,” but it’s not clear to what extent he was involved. Did he only design the software UI? Or did he have input into the hardware, such as the steering assembly, or the (very cool) key dock and the (also very cool) overhead control panel? One noticeable omission from the announcement is that there are no exterior shots of the car body whatsoever. Ferrari is saving that for the full launch in May. We also don’t know how much it will cost, but we’re expecting it to be well out of our price range. Ferrari has a marketing video for the Luce, where you don’t actually see anything significant about the car, but you do hear a lot of marketing speak. At the 5:02 mark, you can see Jony Ive himself, looking at…something. It was only recently that the public got acknowledgement (but not directly from Apple) that the Apple Car was a real project. It was expected to be a luxury vehicle (think BMW, not Ferrari) and possibly self-driving. But after years of working in secrecy, the project was killed two years ago. It looks like many of the ideas Ive had for the Apple Car have been brought to life, thanks to Ferrari.07:00 pmApple’s groundbreaking low-cost MacBook is coming soon

Macworld Last year’s batch of “26” OS updates was dominated by the launch of Liquid Glass, Apple’s transparency-themed cross-platform design language. Liquid Glass, sadly, was not universally embraced, with some users finding it confusing or even illegible. And the company eventually had to offer a way to turn off some of its most extreme visual effects. Apple fans are now starting to think about the 2027 updates that will be announced at WWDC in June and rolled out to the public in the fall, and a small clue to what we can expect was offered in a new report this weekend. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted that in this year’s iOS 27 update, “Apple will be focused on improving the nuts-and-bolts performance of the software.” In other words, the company will prioritize fixing what’s there rather than adding new things, whether that means new features or interface changes. That should, hopefully, mean fewer bugs and speedier performance for iPhone owners. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard iOS 27 will be more of a maintenance release skin to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. That’s not to say there won’t be any new features in iOS 27. Apple broadcasts the keynote presentation at the start of WWDC, with the iPhone generally getting the most stage time, and Craig Federighi will need something to talk about. (Although Gurman says this year’s WWDC will be “a fairly muted affair.”) And it looks likely that Siri will be the flagship talking point. The next version of Siri, offering the contextual capabilities first advertised at WWDC 2024 and based on Google Gemini AI tech, is expected to finally roll out in iOS 26.4 within a matter of weeks. But another Siri update will follow closely on its heels. Gurman says we’ll get our first glimpse of chatbot Siri, codenamed Campos, as part of the iOS 27 announcements at WWDC 2026. Macworld In the latest episode of “New Mac Watch,” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports in his weekly Power On newsletter that the new laptops we’ve all been waiting for–the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros and the M5 MacBook Air–are “coming shortly.” As has been previously reported, Gurman reiterated that the laptops’ release is tied to OS 26.3, which is expected to be released early this week. In his latest report, Gurman now says that a product launch tied to that OS cycle “is currently slated for as early as the week of March 2.” The current M4 Pro and Max MacBook Pros have been in short supply for weeks, indicating that a new release is imminent. The current M4 MacBook Air was released on March 5 of 2025, so a March 2 release of the M5 MacBook Air fits with its annual release cycle. Gurman’s latest report also mentions the new low-cost MacBook with an iPhone chip, but he doesn’t say whether the laptop will be part of this release cycle. He addresses its release with a vague “in the first half of the year.” Gurman covered the rest of the Mac lineup in his report, stating that the upgraded Mac Studio “shouldn’t arrive too long after the spring Mac refresh.” The Mac mini is also due for a 2026 release, but Gurman didn’t offer a timeline. A new Studio Display is coming this year, as well, he says. In addition to this round of M5 Macs, the second half of 2026 will be marked by the release of the redesigned, M6-based MacBook Pro, featuring a touchscreen OLED. Stay tuned to Macworld for the latest information on all of the upcoming releases.04:49 pmOura's FDA lobbying benefits Apple Watch, if everyone's smart about the risks
