Macworld Whether you are updating your old MacBook laptop or planning to buy your first Mac part of the decision of which model to buy should be based on timing. Before you part with your money you should check that the model you are buying isn’t about to be upgraded by Apple. There is nothing worse than buying a new MacBook Air only to see Apple update the models a month later. Luckily you are here reading this article so the chance of you making a mistake like that is slim (although you should check the date this article was last updated!) In this article, we’ll tell you the best time to buy a MacBook, when to buy a Mac, at what time of year Apple usually updates its Macs, and whether an update is expected soon. We’ll also mention if there are any particular configurations to avoid. We will run through each Mac and MacBook Apple currently sells and assess whether now is a good time to buy one based on educated guesses as to when the next one will launch. Sometimes if you wait a month or two you can get more for your money – provided Apple keeps its prices the same. Before you make the decision of which Mac to buy you should also check out our Mac buying guide. Wondering which MacBook to buy, look at MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air. We also offer advice about how much storage, RAM and cores in How much MacBook RAM, SSD, GPU and CPU do you really need? There are a couple of things that can help when predicting when a new model might land. One is to be aware of when Apple last updated the range. The other is to note when Apple has previously announced updates to that range. Apple updated the MacBook Pro with an M5 chip in October 2025. Prior to that the MacBook Air and Mac Studio gained an M4 in March 2025. The MacBook Pro update was only for the entry-level model, a move from M4 to M5. This means that the MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max are yet to launch. The M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro arrived in October 2024, as did the M4 Mac mini and iMac. The next update is expected to come in spring 2026, with Apple expected to introduce the M5 Pro & Max MacBook Pro and M5 MacBook Air. The Mac Pro is also expected to get an update soon, as it is long overdue. Take a look at our article about Apple Events and the new products expected from Apple to check that the outlook hasn’t changed since we last updated this article. Most recent/current Mac launches: 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 – October 2025 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air M4 – March 2025 Mac Studio, M4 Max and M3 Ultra – March 2025 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max – October 2024 24-inch iMac, M4 – October 2024 Mac mini, M4 and M4 Pro – October 2024 Mac Pro, M2 Ultra – June 2023 As for the times when a Mac launch is most likely. In the past, the most likely times to see Mac updates were: WWDC in June for professional Mac models (e.g. Mac Studio and Mac Pro) and October for consumer-focused Macs (e.g. MacBook Air and Mac mini). However, as you will see when you read on, this is not a rule that Apple abides by particularly, nor does Apple always launch new Macs at special events: it often just takes the Apple Store offline for a few hours and then when it returns new Mac models are available as it did in October 2025 and March 2025. We expect that updates for the following Macs are likely to arrive in the next few months. MacBook Pro, M5 Pro & Max: The MacBook Pro is expected gain M5 Pro and M5 Max options in spring 2026. MacBook, M5: The MacBook Air is expected to gain the M5 chip in the spring of 2026. Mac Pro, M4 Ultra: Like the Mac Studio, we hope for a update to the Mac Pro before June 2026. Mac mini, M5/M5 Pro: Update possible in June 2026. iMac, M5: Update possible in June 2026. Mac Studio, M5 Max: Update possible in June 2026. iMac Pro: Apple discontinued the larger-screened 27-inch iMac when the Mac Studio was introduced, but there are rumors that it could make a comeback. Read about the new iMac Pro. When can you get the best Mac deals? If you are thinking of buying a new Mac and the last few months of the year are approaching, you should hold on to take advantage of deals season. From October onwards is when we tend to see the most deals, with everyone saving their best discounts for the weeks around Black Friday at the end of November. If you are wondering whether to wait until Black Friday itself or take advantage of an early deal that’s marked as being ‘early Black Friday’ or similar, our advice is to just go for it! In the past lots of retailers have started their Black Fridays sales a long time before the day itself and promised that prices won’t go any lower on Black Friday itself. Apple never offers any discounts for Black Friday though. The company tends to offer vouchers with qualifying sales around Black Friday ( about what Apple does for Black Friday). You might be able to get money off Apple products from another reseller, though. We see many resellers offering Black Friday deals on Apple products, so come back around Black Friday and check out the best. But we don’t only see prices cut for Black Friday, we see deals on Apple products all year round – so don’t assume you can’t get money off a new Apple product when you need to buy one. Both were updated in March 2025 and feature the M4 chip. This is the MacBook Air design that arrived in the summer of 2022, with MagSafe charging port, improved display and thinner bezels. There are some significant improvements with this generation: you can now plug in two or more external displays thanks to Thunderbolt 4 support, there’s a new Sky Blue color, and prices start at $999 for the current generation model (in the past the entry-level model was the previous generation). Is now a good time to buy a 13-inch MacBook Air? Yes It’s going to be a while before the MacBook Air gets an M5 chip so it’s a good time to buy one. The M4 MacBook Air is an excellent machine and, starting at $999, is the cheapest Mac laptop. You could get a cheaper Mac – the Mac mini costs $599, but for most of us a laptop is what we need. If you can, we recommend spending the $200 extra to get double the storage and better graphics. If you want to buy a MacBook Air check out our round-up of the Best MacBook Air deals and save money, beware that the previous generation cost $100 more for a comparable Mac, so if you are considering a discount on an older models take the new prices into consideration. The only reason not to buy is to wait for the M5 upgrade, probably arriving in the spring of 2026. Should I buy a 15-inch MacBook Air now or wait? The 15-inch MacBook Air is exactly like the 13-inch MacBook Air only with a bigger display and better speakers. It offers better battery life than the smaller model and offers a larger screen, and while it costs a bit more than the 13-inch model, it is much less than the other Mac laptops with larger screens. The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,599/£1,599, while the 15-inch MacBook Air starts at $1,199/£1,199, the lowest price the 15-inch MacBook Air has ever started at. If you prefer larger laptops then the 15-inch MacBook Air will save you thousands compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro and even the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Is now a good time to buy a 15-inch MacBook Air? Yes Apple launched the 15-inch MacBook Air with M4 in March 2025. The only reason not to buy one now is if you want to wait for the M5 upgrade, probably arriving in the spring of 2026. If that is the model you want then now is a good time to buy one. If you need something a bit more powerful than the entry-level model then you will want to consider the MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max chip. Those models arrived in October 2024 and are expected to be updated in spring 2026. The M5 is a good update and the M5 Pro and M5 Max promise to be significant upgrades on the M4 Pro and M4 Max. Whether to wait for the new models depends on whether you want the absolutely fastest and most powerful MacBook, or if you would prefer to take advantage of the knocked down prices on the M4 Pro and Max models. When we reviewed the M5 MacBook Pro we were impressed, but the M4 Pro or M4 Max models offer more ports (including Thunderbolt 5) and superior power. In our review of the M4 Pro models we said they “have what it takes to conquer your processing demands”. Is now a good time to buy a 14-inch MacBook Pro? Yes At $1,599/£1,599 the price of the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 is a high compared to the 15-inch MacBook Air, which you can get for $1,299/£1,299, but the latter still only offers the M4 chip and the M5 in the MacBook Pro is leaps ahead. So or recommendation right now is to buy the M5 MacBook Pro if you see a good deal. If it’s the M4 Pro or M4 Max edition you are after, our recommendation is buy one, you won’t be disappointed. Just keep in mind that the M5 Pro and Max models are likely to arrive towards the beginning of 2026. When we reviewed the M4 Pro 16-inch MacBook Pro model we described it as “a powerful workstation and Apple makes the package even better with Thunderbolt 5, the 12MP Center Stage camera, and the Nano-texture glass display option”. If you need the ultimate in processing muscle, you really want an M4 Max chip, but if a $3,499/£3,499 laptop is out of your budget, the M4 Pro models have what it takes to conquer your processing demands. The larger 16-inch model costs more than it’s smaller sibling (above), but if you need more battery life and a bigger screen then this is the model for you. Is now a good time to buy a 16-inch MacBook Pro? Yes The 16-inch MacBook Pro was updated in October 2024, which is a while ago, but it is still a very powerful Mac. The update isn’t expected until spring 2026. Prices are frequently cut by third-party retailers, including Amazon, so our recommendation is that if you can find a good deal then buy one. If it’s power you need and portability isn’t a factor, you may also want to consider the M4 Pro in the Mac mini and a display as a much cheaper option than the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The M4 model arrived in October 2024 with each model available in blue, green, orange, pink, purple, yellow, and silver, with all but silver offering a bold tone on the back that is complemented by a paler version on the front. On the inside the differences are impressive. As we said in our review, “the new 16GB RAM standard, the implementation of Thunderbolt across the board, the improved FaceTime camera, and the Nano-texture glass option are all winning moves by Apple.” The M4 chip inside is the same as you can find in the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini. The iMac is less expensive than the MacBook Pro, starting at $1,299/£1,299 compared to $1,599/£1,599 for the MacBook Pro, but the MacBook Pro is better equipped, with a 10-core GPU, rather than the 8-core GPU found in that entry-level iMac. There’s also double the storage in the MacBook (512GB compared to 256GB). If you are looking for the best value though, the Mac mini is much cheaper than the iMac, starting at $599/£599 for the same spec. Is now a good time to buy a 24-inch iMac? Yes While we feel that it is overpriced, we accept that there are places for which the iMac is ideal–reception desks, living rooms, and so on. If If you’re looking for a new, complete Mac setup– a computer, display, and input devices–the M4 iMac is a great choice. If you do want to buy one then do not pay full price, check our round-up of the best iMac deals. If you need an iMac that is designed with creative pros in mind you should look at the Mac mini with M4 Pro. Read our full Apple iMac (M4, 2024) review Should I buy a Mac mini now or wait? The Mac mini with M4 or M4 Pro is the long awaited successor to the M2 Mac mini and M2 Pro version. The Mac mini is now even smaller, but it’s just as powerful as any other M4 equipped Mac. The performance and value on offer for just $599/£599 is excellent, if you are trying to spec up a machine to meet higher demands we found that can be expensive, but that is the case with all of Apple’s build-to-order options. The pro version of the Mac mini does much to fill the gap left by the removal of the 27-inch iMac, as long as you have a decent monitor you can use. Is now a good time to buy a Mac mini? Yes We recommend the M4 Mac mini. It offers the same specs as the other M4 Macs for much less money, the only difference being the absence of a screen. But since you can buy a decent 4K display for less than £300/$300 we don’t think that is a big problem. See our round-up of the best monitors for Mac. The M4 Pro Mac mini is a great option for anyone who needs affordable power. The only reason to hold off buying is if you want to wait for Apple to update the Mac Studio with M2 Max and M2 Ultra. However, the Mac Studio starts at $1,999/£2,099, while the M2 Pro Mac mini offers much better value at $1,299/£1,299. If you want to buy a Mac mini now check out our round-up of the Best Mac mini deals. Should I buy a Mac Studio now or wait? We have always been impressed by the Mac Studio’s processing power, port flexibility and price, and feel that for many it is a suitable replacement for an Intel Mac Pro. The only point of contention with the Mac Studio in 2025 is the slightly confusing existence of the M3 Ultra and M4 Max together in the line up at the same time. Rather than introducing a M4 Ultra Apple is selling a M3 Ultra version. This is still going to be more powerful than the M4 Max, but it won’t be as powerful as the M4 Ultra, which we assume will eventually turn up in the Mac Pro. In our review of the model that arrived in June 2023, we said that: “The Mac Studio is the ideal Mac–it’s powerful, priced appropriately, has lots of ports for connecting devices, and it won’t take up a lot of desk space,” and described it as a “complete package of processing power, features, and design”. Is now a good time to buy a Mac Studio? Yes After a long wait Apple updated the Mac Studio in March 2025. The M4 Max model is a fraction of the price of the M4 Max MacBook Pro, so we recommend it if you need a powerful Mac and don’t need to carry it around with you. If you need a powerful Mac and don’t want to wait for Apple to update the Mac Pro then the M3 Ultra version is sure to meet your needs, and it will cost a lot less than the Mac Pro will when Apple updates it with an M4 Ultra chip. Take advantage of the Best Mac Studio deals, because we do see some big discounts on these models. Read our full Apple Mac Studio (M2 Max, 2023) review Should I buy a Mac Pro now or wait? Price When Reviewed: From $6,999 Best Prices Today: Retailer Price $6999 View Deal Check Price comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwide Product Price Price comparison from Backmarket WAIT Last update: June 2023 Next update: Spring 2026 Apple launched the Mac Pro M2 Ultra in June 2023, three and a half years after the range was last updated in December 2019. That was the first update since December 2013 (which was a wait of six years!) It’s more than two years since the last update to the Mac Pro, which given Apple’s track record isn’t that bad… The main benefit of the 2019 Mac Pro design is shared by the design of the 2023 Mac Pro: it offers PCIe expansion slots (seven in total) and its modular design should mean that there is the potential for SSD upgrades down the line (although RAM won’t be upgradable and nor will the GPU or CPU). The Mac Pro has a lot of competition in the form of the Mac Studio, which offered the exact same spec as the Mac Studio for less money. In March 2025 Apple shook this situation up by updating the Mac Studio with an M4 Max and M3 Ultra chip, suggesting that when the M4 Ultra Mac Pro does eventually launch there will be a clearer distinction between it and the Mac Studio. For now, the Mac Pro brings an extra fan, more ports and there is a rack-mounted option, but until Apple updates it the Mac Pro is not the company’s fastest Mac. Is now a good time to buy a Mac Pro? No The disadvantage is that Apple hasn’t updated the Mac Pro since mid 2023. Since then the M4 Pro has more than caught up with the M2 Max, the M4 Max has edged ahead of the M2 Ultra, and now the M3 Ultra has arrived on the Mac Studio taking the Mac Pro’s prize as the most powerful Mac. If you need power then the Mac Pro isn’t looking as attractive next to its siblings right now. When the Mac Pro is finally updated we expect it to leap ahead, so our recommendation it to wait. We expect an update at, or before, WWDC 2026. The iPad Pro went on sale ten years ago, launching with a 12.9-inch screen that Apple believed would redefine computing through size alone. The company initially resisted making the device a laptop replacement and maintained strict limitations on multitasking, browser capabilities, and app installation. Over the past decade, Apple reversed course. The iPad Pro gained USB-C ports, external drive support, keyboard and trackpad accessories, and an improved Files app. The current M5 model includes OLED screens in 13- and 11-inch sizes. iPadOS 26 added free-form multitasking, a menu bar and the Preview app. The webcam now sits in landscape orientation. Despite these advances, the device remains constrained by App Store-only software installation, The Verge writes, limited system access, and the absence of desktop-class browsers. Apple spent years positioning the iPad as a third category between phones and computers. The hardware and accessories now support full computer functionality, but artificial software limitations remain in place. Apple said the 3D-knitted design was inspired by "a piece of cloth" and was born from the idea of creating an additional pocket for any iPhone and small everyday items. Yoshiyuki Miyamae, design director at Miyake Design Studio, said the product "speaks to the bond between iPhone and its user" and explores "the joy of wearing iPhone in your own way." Apple released the M5 MacBook Pro models in October 2025 This is a replacement for the entry-level M4 MacBook Pro, and it’s a good update (read our review of the M5 MacBook Pro). The M4 Pro 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models were not updated. That might be bad luck if you want the latest and greatest processor, but the lack of an M5 Pro MacBook Pro does mean that there are some amazing deals on the year-old machines, which features chips that are superior to the M5 chip. If you want to hang on for the M5 Pro then do so, but we recommend grabbing a cut price M4 Pro (or M4 Max) MacBook while the prices are this low. The MacBook Air is also awaiting an update to the M5 generation of chips, so you can expect some excellent deals on the M4 MacBook Air (read our M4 MacBook Air review to find out why we gave it five stars). For more information about the differences and which MacBook might be best for you, read How the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro compare. How to get the best Mac deals for Black Friday 2025: Our advice Simon Jary / Foundry It’s now more than a year since Apple updated the Mac mini and iMac with M4 chips, which should mean you can get a good price in the Black Friday sale. We really rate the Mac mini as an excellent low-cost Mac, starting at $599/£599 and that’s before the discounts we expect to see over the Black Friday shopping period. The iMac seems so over priced in comparison to the Mac mini, but it does, of course, come with a stunning display and it will look fabulous in your living room/office reception. This is the one time of year when you can get an iMac for a reasonable price. If you see a deal on an older M3 model do note that with the move to M4 Apple doubled the RAM on the base models from 8GB to 16GB. As a result, the older generation of iMac and Mac mini would have to be considerably reduced in price to compete with the newer models. Does Apple discount Macs for Black Friday? Apple doesn’t drop prices for Cyber Monday or Black Friday. Rather, it gives away gift cards when you buy certain items. For Apple’s Black Friday deal in 2024, it gave away gift cards with the MacBook Air purchases made on Apple’s U.S. site or Apple’s U.K. site. Since they were so new, the M4 MacBook Pro models, Mac mini, and iMac weren’t included for 2024. We don’t yet know Apple’s deal for 2025, but we expect only the M5 MacBook Pro left out, and, hopefully a decent sized gift voucher with the M4 Pro and Max MacBook Pro models. 20242023202215-inch MacBook Air$200$200n/a13-inch MacBook Air$175$175$15013-inch MacBook Air (M2)$150$150$150Mac mini–$100$10014-inch & 16-inch MacBook Pro––$250iMac––$150 Buying from Apple means you are guaranteed to be buying the latest Mac, whereas other resellers may be clearing old stock. Just make sure you are buying the latest model or getting a reasonable discount if not. Black Friday Mac top shopping tips We tend to find that the biggest savings are on older models, but be aware that these aren’t always the best value for money. Check the generation of the model that is discounted to make sure you know exactly what you are buying and what it’s really worth. We’ve seen resellers switch to selling refurbished or used when the stock of brand-new models run out, so check that the model discounted isn’t actually a used Mac and therefore not as good a deal as it might look. That’s not to say you should avoid refurb models – you just need to make sure that you aren’t buying refurb without knowing. Mac deals aren’t limited to Black Friday. We see good deals all year round, so don’t feel pressured into buying during Black Friday. Where to get Black Friday Mac deals Many resellers offer Black Friday discounts. Major retailer calls current model ‘discontinued’
Macworld We’ve suspected for some time that Apple will soon release a new HomePod mini, but that launch came a step closer to reality this week with the discovery that a major retailer is already listing the current model as discontinued. At time of writing B&H lists the HomePod mini in Midnight, yellow, orange, blue, and white as “Discontinued.” (It also shows the Space Gray model, which was replaced by Midnight more than a year ago, as the subtly different “No Longer Available.”) By contrast, the full-size HomePod is listed normally and available to buy at the MSRP. David Price / Foundry Yet the HomePod mini has absolutely not been discontinued. It’s still available for sale on Apple’s website, and when checking from the U.K. I found that all five color finishes were available for delivery tomorrow, or in-store pickup today. There seems to be plenty of stock. It’s unclear if an B&H employee did this accidentally, or if it’s an official policy. But such labels don’t appear to be common. After browsing through various Apple product listings I was unable to find any other devices labelled as discontinued, let alone ones which are still sold on Apple’s website. B&H is the only retailer known to have taken this step so far. But as MacRumors reports, other companies are providing more subtle hints that the first-gen HomePod mini might not be long for this world. Target and Verizon, for example, each have at least one color that’s out of stock, while Adorama, Walmart, and Staples appear to have no HomePod minis at all. Such widespread shortages are usually a sign that production is winding up ahead of a new model being launched. You’ll also remember a report earlier this month that claimed there was a retail store “event” happening on November 12, with employees working overnight to change store displays. For those keeping track, November 12 is tomorrow. Rumors also point to the release of a new Apple TV 4K. The HomePod mini was launched back in 2020 and hasn’t been updated since, other than the addition of new colors in 2021. So it’s probably fair to say that a second-gen model is overdue. (There was a five-year gap between the first and second full-size HomePods, and that includes almost two years when the product didn’t exist at all.) Multiple pundits have predicted that the HomePod mini 2 will arrive either later this year or early in 2026. Whether the new model will be much of an upgrade on its predecessor remains to be seen. But we’ve written a wish list of five improvements that would turn it into the mini smart speaker of our dreams.02:30 pmA new AI platform just dropped a $90 lifetime subscription
