Macworld TL;DR: PDF Expert edits, signs, and converts PDFs on your Mac, and it’s only $79.99 for life (reg. $139.99). Macs have a few basic tools to open PDFs, but you can’t do much more than look at them. If you want to fix typos or make bigger edits, you’ll need an app like PDF Expert. Right now, a lifetime subscription only costs $79.99 (reg. $139.99). PDF Expert lets you edit PDFs as easily as any other file format. You can update a number, fix a sentence, or add a full paragraph without rebuilding the document. It can do the same thing with images, too. Messy files get cleaned up with tools to merge PDFs, reorganize pages, and compress a file that’s too big to email. PDF Expert turns documents and images into PDFs and converts PDFs back into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, image, or plain text files you can keep editing in another app. The built-in OCR tool reads the text in a scanned PDF, so you can search and select the words on a receipt that used to be a flat picture. You can also search scanned contracts and old paper records for a name or a date. You can fill out and sign forms right on the page, and annotation tools let you highlight and mark up a draft before you send it back. Edit your PDFs yourself. In an opinion piece for 404 Media, Matthew Gault argues that Apple has entered its "slop era," abandoning its reputation for innovative hardware in favor of recycled ideas and questionable design choices. Here's an excerpt: My ears perked up when I heard Apple's new foldable phones were cracking. I licked my lips when the company announced it's releasing a touch-screen laptop. This was a company that once charged $19 for a polishing cloth, asked $200 for a VESA mount, and sold $700 wheels for the Mac Pro. Now it's borrowing tired ideas from its competitors and launching hardware its previous leaders rejected. The once dominant company is struggling to find its feet in an AI-driven post-Tim Cook world. John Ternus is the new CEO -- a 25 year veteran of the company with a track record of pushing harebrained hardware schemes like the much reviled Touch Bar and lawsuit inducing butterfly keyboard. With Ternus at the helm, I feel there's a good chance Apple's best days are behind it, that it will have to make do with less, that it's declasse. Apple, blindsided by AI and relying on crowdpleasing hardware gimmicks, is downwardly mobile. It's in its slop era. The company that once asked consumers to "Think Different" is now releasing hardware that's just like everything else on the market. Tech stocks have been a bloodbath this last week, but Apple's iPhone has supported the company enough with it once more taking the top spot as the most valuable firm in the world.Apple's valuation is down, but the largest in the worldThat top spot has been going back and forth between Apple and Nvidia for some time now, as iPhone and Services demand go up against AI chip consumption. This time, Apple's stock has been rising on the back of multiple hardware releases, plus the seamless transition of CEO from Tim Cook to John Ternus.Apple stock closed on October 30 down to $344.63, leaving the company with a $5.03 trillion valuation. Nvidia had a tough day too, and finished below AAPL at $204.64 per share, and a $4.93 trillion valuation. This latest valuation comes despite one analyst believing that Apple has confused iPhone buyers. Loop Capital claims that moving the base iPhone launch from September to some point early in 2027 has left buyers unsure. On Security Bite, it’s one of my favorite pastimes to explain why camera covers are virtually useless today. I’ve been called out plenty of times for it. So when Apple patches a bug that lets a malicious app get access to the camera without permission, I find myself in a rather precarious situation. This week, Apple released iOS 27.2 to the public, and with it, over 160 different vulnerability patches. One of them fixes a bug that could let a malicious app access an iPhone’s or Mac’s camera without the user’s permission. Rest assured, this is not a hardware issue. Apple’s post-2008 change that put the camera module and the green LED indicator on the same circuit is not at fault here. more…07:00 pmApple’s new MacBook Pro’s 2,000-nit OLED is unlike anything else you can buy
