Matthew Rothenberg, well known Mac journalist and industry pundit, has written a commentary on Apple’s recently announced retail plans — a.k.a., their high-profile storefronts which open first in McLean, VA on May 19. “Although Apple has kept its big picture securely under wraps, an M.O. for its dealerships is already coming into focus,” writes Rothenberg. FileMaker, an Apple company, will release a new version of its popular database software today according to ZDNet UK. FileMaker Professional 5.5 improves on features like Web support, importing Excel spreadsheets and ease of use.

The advent of computer screens that give the appearance of a three dimensional workspace may not be that far off. A Reuters report out of Singapore tells of Deep Video Imaging, a private research company based in New Zealand, that has developed the said technology using multiple layers of LCD screens — no 3D goggles required. Prototypes for desktop computers are expected sometime next year.

Although Microsoft previously said they would be supporting FireWire over USB 2.0 in their upcoming operating system revamp, Windows XP, the company now says they will offer a USB 2.0 driver in an upgrade after the official release of the new OS on October 25.

Macworld UK is reporting that TDK Systems, Europe has launched a connectivity solution which allows Palm users to view and control a Mac, PC or Unix desktop from anywhere — a first in Europe. Details are sketchy at the moment, but using a GSM phone and TDK’s GlobaPulse software, it will be possible to access a Mac on your Palm’s screen. Further details are expected later today.
