A new CRT technology, dubbed S-Cubed, could extend the life of CRTs, which many expect will be completely replaced by flat-panel displays. S-Cubed technology significantly reduces the depth of a CRT — 11-inches for a 32-inch tube, compared with 22-inches for traditional CRTd — while improving picture quality. The price premium over conventional CRTs is also expected to be minimal, at about 10 to 15 percent.

PowerBook Central reports that Apple has lowered the price on its PowerBook G4 to educational customers. Prices have been reduced as low as $1,979 (400MHz) and $2,699 (500MHz) for some customers.

The O’Reilly Network has published an interesting exchange of emails between one of its readers and Danny Goodman, who played a leading role in developing HyperCard, the Apple technology that despite being killed still holds an ardent user base. Macworld UK is reporting that Alan Kessler, head of Palm Inc.’s Platform Solutions Group, has resigned. No explanation or details on the resignation were revealed, except for a comment from Mr. Kessler, saying that he is “ready to move on to a new challenge.” This news follows hot on the heels of Palm’s announcement Thursday of its acquisition of Be, Inc.

A Forbes.com article suggests that Microsoft may be the perfect suitor EarthLink, which is ripe for a buy out following Sprint’s sale of some 16 million shares today (half of its holdings; Sprint will sell the remainder at a later date). The contrasting philosophies at both companies would make a partnership awkward, however.
