Compaq Computer yesterday afternoon reported a third-quarter loss of US$120 million, compared to a profit of $557 million in the year ago quarter. Revenue dropped significantly as well, down to $7.5 billion from $11.2 billion in the year ago quarter. Amazon.com, meanwhile, posted a net third-quarter loss of $58 million as revenues remained flat from the year ago quarter at $639 million.

Totally Hip Software has announced the release of LiveSlideShow 2.0 for Macintosh today. LiveSlideShow is a consumer application which allows users to add special effects to digital photography. Version 2.0 offers themes and background sound tracks with Kodak Picture Friendly Certification. LiveSlideShow retails for US$49.95 — registered users of version 1.0 can upgrade for $19.95. Educational discounts are also available.

Apple has posted several video items demonstrating their new MP3 player, iPod. Posted today are the new iPod TV commercial, a video describing iPod, and a QuickTime VR clip displaying the new device.
