New iMac begins shipping in U.K.

Several MacMinute readers in the U.K. report that their new iMac orders from the Apple Store have shipped. Supply remains very tight, however, and it’s unclear when resellers in the country can expect stock of the system.  Updated 12:25 Craig Sanderson has informed us that PC World, a U.K. Mac reseller, had a few units of the new iMac in stock today, although a salesperson said supply is very constrained.

New technology could significantly boost digital cameras

Foveon today unveiled the X3, a new image sensor for digital cameras that dramatically improves image quality without necessarily raising cost. Unlike most image sensors currently available that only capture red, green, and blue — resorting to software in the camera to extrapolate the other colors in the photo — the X3 can capture the three primary colors in each pixel of an image, significantly enhancing quality.

Apple executive: No new hardware for “some months”

Having refreshed its entire product line in the last two months, Apple is not planning to update any of its hardware for some time, according to MacCentral, ruling out the possibility of updated hardware being introduced at Seybold New York next week or Macworld Expo Tokyo later in March. “We’re not planning to introduce any new CPUs at Macworld Tokyo, as a matter of fact, we’re set for some months now,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior director of Hardware Product Marketing said.

Handspring Treo begins shipping in U.S.

Handspring today began shipping its three-in-one Treo handheld to U.S. customers. The Treo 180 combines cell phone, PDA, and messaging functionality in one device that sells for US$399 with service activation or $549 without activation. Orders are expected to begin arriving in 1-2 weeks and will be available at retailers in March.
