Pitney-Bowes sues Lexmark, Apple, others

Pitney-Bowes yesterday filed suit against Lexmark and several other companies, including Apple, over an alleged violation of a patent involving an internal piece of many laser printers, reports the Associated Press. The patent describes an apparatus used to smooth the edges of printed characters produced by a laser printer. Pitney-Bowes received a US$400 million settlement from Hewlett-Packard in a similar lawsuit filed last year.

Alien updates multi-service messaging client

Alien Technology has released Proteus 1.5, a new version of its multi-service instant messaging client for Mac OS X. The application supports all major instant messaging services and, among its features, interaction via the Dock and support for broadcasting conversations to multiple parties across various services. Alien has also released the basic source code for the Cocoa application, encouraging developers to add instant messaging capabilities to their own applications.
