An iPad by any other name…

An iPad by any other name would still be an iPad. And another name would probably have been a better choice for several reasons.

One: as many folks have pointed out, it sounds like a feminine hygiene product.

Two: it’s too close to iPod. You can bet that there’ll be articles in which an understandable typo will say “iPod” when it means “iPad.” And vice versa.

Three: there are other claims to the name: STMicroelectronics, ST, a French-Italian company, uses the IPAD name in chips sold to mobile phone makers. IPAD stands for “Integrated Passive and Active Devices.

Wonder Bread has served up its first iPhone/iPod touch app. The Sandwich Wonder-izer app is free and lets you create sandwich combinations from a list of more than 120 ingredients –from cheddar cheese to cucumbers and sprouts to salami — while calculating the sandwich’s nutrition values in real time with each added ingredient.

Mac software updates for Feb. 8

ZiggySoft has released a new version (2.3.7) of iWeb Valet (http://www.ziggy-soft.com/News.html(, a tool to enhance and upload iWeb pages. The upgrade: adds basic support for international fonts; removes FTP real-time logging to increase listing speed; corrects an iDisk transfer bug; and enhances the Text menu.

Tension Software has updated Password Repository (http://www.pomola.com/products_passwordrepository/passwordrepository.html), a Mac OS X password storage utility, to version 2.11.9. It’s a maintenance release that fixes some bugs.
