Greg’s bite: Clear’s new iSpot 4G Mac Wi-Fi router

Clear, the new 4G wireless Internet provider “Clear” (associated with Sprint), provided me with a test unit of their new portable WiFi router.  I tried it out in Kansas City, Kansas, and when I was able to actually hook up with their new 4G network, it worked fine and is fast. The problem is not with the cool looking 4G device, but with the limited radio coverage available at this time.

Apple to open retail store in Pittsburgh on Aug. 28

Apple is set to open a new retail store in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, Aug. 28, at 10 am (Eastern). Apple Store Ross Park will be located at 1000 Ross Park Mall Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.

Apple Store Haywood Mall will be the company’s 303rd retail store. Apple plans to open another 185 or so during this fiscal year, with about half of those outside the U.S.

iTunes U downloads top 300 million

In just over three years, iTunes U downloads have topped 300 million and it has become one of the world’s most popular online educational catalogs, according to Apple. Over 800 universities throughout the world have active iTunes U sites, and nearly half of these institutions distribute their content publicly on the iTunes Store.

CheckUp 2.7 detects more common Mac problems

App4Mac (http://www.app4mac.com) has updated CheckUp, a Mac OS X tool for checking the health and monitoring the behavior of a Mac computer (even from a remote computer), to version 2.7. The upgrade can detect more common issues of Mac computer and display more details about how to fix them.

CheckUp 2.7 also offers improved alerts management on disks or memory issues, support of recent Macs (Mac Pro, iMac, Mac Mini Server), a new tool to send feedback directly from the help menu, auto update functionality an an updated user interface. There’s also improved documentation.
