MacMinute reader David Renteria reports receiving his Mac OS X 10.1 CD in the mail that was ordered through the Mac OS Up-To-Date program. “They were postmarked on the 27th, so they shipped quickly. It was definitely worth $20. There was a full-color 35 page book explaining OS X as well as the 10.1 CD, 9.2 CD and the developer tools CD.”

The Register has published a brief overview with its thoughts on Mac OS X 10.1, praising the performance improvements. “Mac OS X is no longer a liability.” The article includes a handful of benchmarks as well. Back in May, The Register posted a very informative article on its experiences and opinions of Mac OS X (10.0.4).

Apple has lowered the price of its 5-pack of DVD-R media to US$29.95, a $20 savings. Apple also recently began stocking Brenthaven’s Mobility 1 case, designed specifically for the new iBook, and the Custom Fit Ti case, for the PowerBook G4. Those cases are available for $79 and $149, respectively.

ATI has posted a ROM update for its Radeon Mac Edition, Rage Orion, Nexus 128, and XClaim VR 128 retail video cards, as noted by VersionTracker. The update corrects some issues with the cards under Mac OS X, but is not needed for systems that shipped with an XClaim VR 128 or Radeon built-in.

Apple’s $799 iMac is now available for purchase from the Apple Store. As we mentioned last week, the new 500MHz model is identical to the $999 iMac, but features half the built-in RAM (64MB) and a CD-ROM drive in place of a CD-RW drive. It is available only in Indigo.
