Apple's New AI Dataset Aims to Improve Photo Editing Models Apple researchers have released Pico-Banana-400K, a comprehensive dataset of 400,000 curated images that's been specifically designed to improve how AI systems edit photos based on text prompts.
The massive dataset aims to address what Apple describes as a gap in current AI image editing training. While systems like GPT-4o can make impressive edits, the researchers say progress has been limited by inadequate training data built from real photographs. Apple's new dataset aims to improve the situation.
Pico-Banana-400K features images organized into 35 different edit types across eight categories, from basic adjustments like color changes to complex transformations such as converting people into Pixar-style characters or LEGO figures. Each image went through Apple's AI-powered quality control system, with Google's Gemini-2.5-Pro being used to evaluate the results based on instruction compliance and technical quality.
The dataset also includes three specialized subsets: 258,000 single-edit examples for basic training, 56,000 preference pairs comparing successful and failed edits, and 72,000 multi-turn sequences showing how images evolve through multiple consecutive edits.
Apple built the dataset using Google's Gemini-2.5-Flash-Image (aka Nano-Banana) editing model, which was released just a few months ago. However, Apple's research revealed its limitations. While global style changes succeeded 93% of the time, precise tasks like relocating objects or editing text seriously struggled, with success rates below 60%.
Despite the limitations, researchers say their aim with Pico-Banana-400K is to establish "a robust foundation for training and benchmarking the next generation of text-guided image editing models." The complete dataset is freely available for non-commercial research use on GitHub, so developers can use it to train more capable image editing AI.This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

6 New Things Your iPhone Can Do in iOS 26.1 Apple is about to drop iOS 26.1, the first major point release since iOS 26 was rolled out in September, and there are at least six notable changes and improvements to look forward to. We've rounded them up below.
Apple has already provided developers and public beta testers with the release candidate version of iOS 26.1, which means Apple will likely roll out the update to all compatible iPhones on Monday, November 3 or Tuesday, November 4.
Make Liquid Glass More Opaque
Apple has added a new Liquid Glass customization setting, letting you choose how translucent the interface appears. You can now switch between a Clear look – showing more of the background behind menus and buttons – or a Tinted look that adds opacity and contrast for a bolder appearance.
The option appears in Settings ➝ Display & Brightness on iOS and iPadOS, and System Settings ➝ Appearance on Mac. Apple says the change was inspired by beta tester feedback requesting a less transparent, higher-contrast version of Liquid Glass. The setting applies systemwide, affecting everything from app interfaces to Lock Screen notifications.
Turn Off Lock Screen Swipe-to-Camera Gesture
In iOS 26.1, Apple is introducing a welcome change for anyone who's ever accidentally launched the Camera app while pulling their iPhone out of their pocket or bag. For the first time, you can now disable the Lock Screen's swipe-to-open-camera gesture. In the Settings app, tap Camera, scroll down, and toggle off the switch next to "Lock Screen Swipe to Open Camera."
The Lock Screen camera gesture has been a staple iPhone feature for years, allowing you to quickly swipe left to capture spontaneous moments. But it's all too easy to trigger the Camera app unintentionally, potentially draining your battery or filling your Photos library with accidental shots of the inside of your pocket. Now you can avoid such potential accidents completely.
Slide to Stop Alarm
Apple has changed how you dismiss iPhone alarms in iOS 26.1, and your morning muscle memory might need tweaking as a result. By default, the Clock app now requires a slide gesture to stop an alarm from the Lock Screen, replacing the previous tap-to-stop button that was redesigned in iOS 26. Snoozing still works with a simple tap, but turning off an alarm entirely demands the extra swipe motion.
The change appears designed to prevent accidental dismissals when you're reaching for your phone in the morning. By requiring a more deliberate action, you're less likely to silence your alarm when you meant to hit snooze. If you don't like the change, you can revert the alarm interface back to the previous Stop button, thanks to a new "Prefer Single-Touch Actions" toggle in Settings ➝ Accessibility ➝ Touch.
More Control Over Local Capture Recordings
iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 introduced Local Capture, a new way to record video and audio directly on your device that's ideal for everything from quick clips to full podcast episodes. And with iOS 26.1, Apple is refining the experience even further.
A new Local Capture menu in Settings ➝ General gives you more control over how your recordings are handled. You can now choose a Save Location, allowing you to store captures anywhere you prefer instead of the default Downloads folder. There's also a new Audio Only toggle, which is handy if you want to focus purely on sound without recording video.
Swipe to Change Songs
In iOS 26.1, Apple Music is getting a small but handy upgrade that should make listening even smoother. When the music player is minimized at the bottom of the screen, you can now swipe left or right to skip between songs, without having to open the full player. Whether you're jumping back to a favorite track or skipping ahead in a playlist, the change makes it feel more instant and natural.
Automatically Install Security Updates
Apple is refining how iPhone users stay protected between major iOS updates with an evolution of its earlier Rapid Security Responses feature, which was introduced over two years ago. In iOS 26.1, a new option under Settings ➝ Privacy & Security ➝ Security Improvements introduces "Background Security Improvements." The feature automatically downloads and installs important security fixes as they become available, but does it silently on your device.
Previously, you had to download Rapid Security Responses through the Settings app just like a normal iOS update. The first and only Rapid Security Response release was in July 2023. That version broke support for some websites, forcing Apple to pull and reissue it. Apple will also be able to roll back a Background Security Improvement if it causes any problems. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
iPhone 18: Everything we know so far about the 2026 models Macworld
2026 iPhone 18 series: Summary
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to launch in September 2026
iPhone 18 and 18e might not arrive until spring 2027
Folding iPhone also said to launch in September 2026
Smaller dynamic island, camera aperture enhancements, C2 5G modem
Another year, another iPhone, right? Not so fast. As Apple demonstrated with the iPhone Air in 2025 and the surprisingly full-featured regular iPhone 17, sometimes the company can surprise us with something new.
In addition to the ultra-premium folding iPhone, Apple is said to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in the fall of 2026, and then in a new scheduling shakeup, the base iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e in the spring of 2027.
Here’s a quick summary of what all the rumors and leaks say to expect from the iPhone 18 models.
iPhone 18/18 Pro: Latest rumors
October 27: Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station reports that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a variable aperture lens for the first time.
iPhone 18/18 Pro design: Three models, similar designs
Currently, the rumors suggest we’ll see a base iPhone 18, an iPhone 18 Pro, and an iPhone 18 Pro Max. That is in addition to any not-iPhone 18-models like the rumored folding iPhone and second-generation Air.
The designs are said to resemble the current iPhone 17 line. The base iPhone 18 will have just the smaller camera bump found on the iPhone 17, while the Pro and Pro Max will have the wider raised “plateau” with three cameras. Screen sizes should be consistent with the 6.3 and 6.9-inch displays on the current models.
One possible design change, according to a Weibo leaker, is with the charging area on the back of the iPhone 18 Pro models. Reportedly, the ceramic shield section will be “slightly transparent,” but it’s not fully clear what that means.
iPhone 18/18 Pro camera: Aperture upgrades
Apple just upgraded the iPhone 17 camera system with 48MP sensors, so it’s unlikely there will be any significant changes to the hardware. One significant rumor we’ve heard about the iPhone 18 camera system comes from leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo, who reports that the iPhone 18 Pro Max (and only that model) will get a camera with a mechanically-adjustable aperture like DSLR cameras. This would give users great control over background blurring, but primarily with the ability to keep the foreground and background sharp.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max’s telephoto lenses are also expected to have a larger overall aperture for sharper pictures in low-light situations.
Expect changes to the aperture of the iPhone 18 Pro.Britta O’Boyle
iPhone 18/18 Pro: Dynamic Island
Apple hasn’t changed the size or shape of the Dynamic Island since its introduction on the iPhone 14 Pro, but some reports suggest there may be changes coming to the iPhone 18’s camera cutout. Some have claimed there will just be a pinhole cutout for the camera, with the whole Face ID assembly under the display, but most reports suggest those changes will be limited to the folding iPhone or arrive on the 20th anniversary model.
However, it still may look different. The ever-reliable Mark Gurman at Bloomberg has claimed that Apple will “shrink” the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 models, which suggests that some of the several sensors and emitters required for Face ID will be under the display or combined.
iPhone 18/18 Pro specs: A20 chip
The iPhone 18 line will feature a new A20 processor, likely made using TSMC’s new 2nm fabrication process (which can allow for more complex chips in the same area, and could potentially allow for better power efficiency).
The A20 is rumored to use a new process called Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) packaging to incorporate the RAM into the SoC’s package. It’s not clear what the benefit will be, but more tightly integrated RAM can mean more memory bandwidth and lower RAM latency, or better power efficiency.
iPhone 18/18 Pro: Wireless connectivity
While the iPhone Air features a more advanced version of Apple’s C1 modem, dubbed the C1X, the other iPhone 17 models still use Qualcomm wireless modems. That’s likely to change in the iPhone 18 line.
We’re told to expect a new C2 modem in the iPhone 18 phones, including the Pro and Pro Max. It’s not yet clear what features it will offer, but of course should deliver better performance and energy efficiency than the C1X and likely support high-speed mmWave networks in addition to the standard sub-6 networks.
Apple debuted its local networking chip in the iPhone 17 line as well; the N1 supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread networking. We haven’t heard anything about an N2 on the way, and honestly, one probably isn’t needed so soon. Could Apple have an “N1X” surprise in store the way it did with the C1X? It’s possible, but so far the rumor mill expects Apple to build the iPhone 18 line with the same N1 chip as found in the iPhone 17.
However, a report from The Information says that Apple is gearing up to support 5G networks that are served from satellites, namely Starlink satellites. While the iPhone has offered satellite connectivity for emergency situations for years, this would allow the iPhone 18 models to have full internet access via satellite, not just emergency services.
iPhone 18/18 Pro release date: Split launch
There have been consistent reports for some time that Apple will change up its release schedule. In September 2026, Apple will reportedly only release the high-end models: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the new folding iPhone, and perhaps an updated iPhone Air.
That means the base model iPhone 18 will wait until spring 2027, when it will reportedly arrive alongside the iPhone 18e. This is a big departure for Apple, and it means that the new iPhones next year will all have price tags of $999 or more.
iPhone 18/18 Pro pricing: A wide range
We haven’t seen any reports about changes in pricing to the existing iPhone lineup in 2026. As it stands, the iPhone 17 starts at $799, the iPhone Air is $999, and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models start at $1,099 and $1,199, respectively. However, the arrival of the folding iPhone could dramatically change the pricing structure, as it will reportedly have a starting price of $1,999 or more.

Withings Launches iPhone-Connected Urine Reader That Goes in Your Toilet Withings' U-Scan, the company's toilet-mounted health sensor first unveiled at CES 2023, is now available in both the U.S. and Europe after a two-year delay. The compact device analyzes urine samples automatically, part of Withings' latest effort to bring passive health tracking into everyday routines.
The commercial version launches with two interchangeable testing cartridges: Nutrio and Calci. Nutrio monitors nutrition and hydration indicators including ketones, vitamin C, pH, and hydration levels, while Calci tracks calcium levels that can contribute to kidney stone formation. Each cartridge provides approximately 22 tests over three months and can be swapped through the Withings Health Mate app.
U-Scan is sold in two packages. The Proactive package costs $349.95 and includes the reader, charging station, and one cartridge. The Intensive package runs $429.95 and includes two cartridges for 44 total tests. Replacement cartridges are priced at $99.95 each or $179.95 per pair, and can be automatically delivered regularly via a Withings Plus subscription.
One notable change since the original announcement is how Withings is positioning the product. The company now classifies U-Scan as a "wellness product" rather than pursuing FDA clearance, which allows it to bypass lengthy regulatory approval. The classification basically focuses the device on general health and lifestyle tracking rather than diagnostic use.
The Cycle Sync cartridge, which was originally promised for menstrual and ovulation tracking, remains delayed. Withings says it plans to bring that cartridge to market at a later date.
The U-Scan follows the recent launch of Kohler's Dekoda, an iPhone-connected gut health and hydration monitor that's designed to be attached to a toilet rim where it uses sensors to analyze your poop rather than your pee. With the launch of Withings' device, now you can do both.Tag: WithingsThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

I don’t trust my Apple Watch’s Sleep Score, and neither should you Macworld
At its iPhone 17 launch event, Apple announced a new watchOS 26 feature called Sleep Score. As its name suggests, the tool evaluates the quality of your sleep based on multiple factors, distilling the outcome into a simple number.
I was initially looking forward to trying Sleep Score, since the company made such a big deal out of it—making it, in fact, a keynote segment headliner. But after a month of active use, it’s become clear to me that Sleep Score is essentially just the same old Apple Watch sleep tracking with a new coat of paint. It does not collect any new sleep data, nor does it deeply analyze other relevant health metrics.
But Sleep Score can be saved. Here’s what Apple needs to do to truly elevate it.
How Sleep Score works
Before pointing out Sleep Score’s shortcomings, let’s take a closer, objective look at how it works. For starters, you’ll need an Apple Watch with sleep monitoring enabled or a similar third-party tracker that collects the same types of data. Once you update your iPhone to iOS 26, you’ll be able to check your Sleep Score in the built-in Apple Health app.
Sleep Score is a 100-point system that takes three main elements into consideration. Your sleep duration, bedtime consistency, and sleep interruptions account for 50, 30, and 20 points, respectively.
To earn the duration factor’s full 50 marks, it appears you need to sleep for at least 8 hours during a given night. Meanwhile, the grade for bedtime consistency depends on whether you sleep around the same time every night. Lastly, you can earn the 20 points for sleep interruptions if you don’t wake up for prolonged periods at night. While you probably won’t score a full mark nightly, claiming the 100 points is achievable, as I’ve done it a few times.
Given that Sleep Score does not gather any new metrics, you can actually check previous months’ ratings—assuming you’ve had the sleep tracking feature enabled. This only proves that Sleep Score is merely a new way to display existing data and doesn’t do much else.
Outliers can be clues to sleep problems, but don’t stop you scoring a perfect 100.Mahmoud Itani / Foundry
The missing ingredients
I was hoping for a meaningful upgrade to the classic sleep tracking feature but Sleep Score is, at best, a UI overhaul with a rating attached. We’ve long been able to check the nightly sleep duration, schedule, and interruptions. While assigning a score can reflect how consistent one’s sleeping habits are, the number itself can be a bit misleading.
Earning 100 points doesn’t necessarily equate to a perfect or even good night’s sleep. For example, if you’re sick and on painkillers, you could realistically score the full mark, despite waking up worn out and having outliers in the Health app’s Vitals section. Sleep Score doesn’t take into account your resting heart rate and heart rate variability, which can be strong indicators of one’s sleep quality and overall health.
Similarly, it completely disregards the previous days’ recorded workouts and burned calories, even though they could impact how well a user sleeps and feels the following morning. The same could be said about the Vitals feature’s recorded respiratory rate, wrist temperature, and blood oxygen levels, which Sleep Score excludes altogether.
Given its name, Sleep Score delivers on its promise; it rates your primary sleeping conditions. The problem, however, is that it fails to innovate or meaningfully enhance sleep tracking on watchOS. If Apple is unable to significantly upgrade the feature, the company should have rolled it out silently as the mostly cosmetic update it is.
A ‘body battery’ approach offers a more useful picture of your sleep health.Mahmoud Itani / Foundry
A simple patch
A more helpful approach would have been estimating users’ overall energy levels throughout the day. I use a HealthKit-enabled third-party app that accesses relevant metrics to display an all-encompassing ‘body battery’ score. These include my workouts, active energy, heart rate readings, wrist temperature, mindfulness minutes, sleep data, and more.
The app analyzes my sleep duration, heart rate, Vitals, and so on to figure out how recharged I am when I wake up. The refilled energy is similarly reflected through a 100-point scoring system. As the day goes by, my score drops depending on recorded workouts, heart rate, physical activity, and so on.
Beyond the overall body battery rating, the app estimates fatigue and stress levels. The readings tend to be accurate, as they account for recent weeks’ health data and aren’t limited to a single day’s measurements. The body battery route helps me get a realistic representation of my state in real time, instead of restricting me to a static score formed from incomplete sleep metrics.
Given that Apple reportedly plans to launch a Health+ service next year with AI coaching, I’m still hopeful. The company could potentially bundle a tool that reads a user’s entire Health app log and presents a meaningful report that dynamically changes every day. Until then, I’m hitting snooze on the Sleep Score feature.

Aisuru Botnet Shifts from DDoS to Residential Proxies Aisuru, the botnet responsible for a series of record-smashing distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks this year, recently was overhauled to support a more low-key, lucrative and sustainable business: Renting hundreds of thousands of infected Internet of Things (IoT) devices to proxy services that help cybercriminals anonymize their traffic. Experts says a glut of proxies from Aisuru and other sources is fueling large-scale data harvesting efforts tied to various artificial intelligence (AI) projects, helping content scrapers evade detection by routing their traffic through residential connections that appear to be regular Internet users.

If You Thought Ads in Apple Maps Was Bad, Samsung is Putting Ads on $1,900+ Refrigerators Apple competitor Samsung has a line of "Family Hub" smart refrigerators equipped with integrated displays, and anything with a display can show you an ad. Starting later this month, Samsung is planning to take advantage of that refrigerator advertising space, and Family Hub refrigerators in the U.S. will get a widget that shows ads.
Samsung confirmed to Fortune last month that it was testing a "pilot program" to offer some fridge owners "promotions and curated advertisements," and now Samsung is ready to provide ads to even more users. 2024 Family Hub refrigerators will get a software update this week, and the update will bring ads to the refrigerator display when it's idle. Ads will start showing up on November 3.
Family Hub refrigerators are priced starting at $1,899, but they go up to $3,499. The refrigerators include 21.5-inch to 32-inch screens and are advertised as keeping families connected. Users can share pictures, videos, and drawings with Google Photos, get recipes, play music, manage calendar events, and buy items from Amazon. Higher-end refrigerators feature "AI Vision" that keeps track of the items inside.
The ads are part of a new Cover screen widget, and they'll be displayed alongside other information like the weather, calendar events, and news. Samsung says that users can choose to opt out of the ads for now through the Advertisements tab of the Settings menu, though that disables all widget features. Ads can also be dismissed from the Cover screen, and the specific ad dismissed won't appear again during the campaign period. Samsung says that ads won't appear when the Cover screen shows art or album themes.
Samsung's decision to include ads on the Family Hub refrigerators has come as a surprise to many customers because the fridges have been available for years now. Many who bought the refrigerator without any expectation that it would show ads will now be subject to advertising. There will undoubtedly be customers unaware that they can opt out of the ads, because Samsung has decided to turn ads on by default.
To begin with, the Family Hub refrigerators will only show ads for Samsung products, but Samsung seems to be planning to allow third-party advertisers to show ads, according to The Verge.
Apple doesn't make refrigerators, but it too is ramping up the number of places where it displays ads. Recent reports suggest that the Apple Maps app will start showing ads in search results as soon as next year.Tag: SamsungThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Samsung Shows Off Tri-Fold Smartphone Samsung has been working on a smartphone with not just one fold, but two, and the first photos of the upcoming device surfaced today (via The Chosun Daily).

Samsung displayed the tri-fold smartphone at APEC 2025 Korea. The device is designed to transform from a ~6.5-inch smartphone into a ~10-inch tablet-style display. It will fold twice, rather than just once like the standard Galaxy Fold smartphones.
There was no opportunity for APEC attendees to try the smartphone because it was displayed in a transparent case, but The Korea Economic Daily was still able to share some details. The smartphone appears to be about 4.2mm thick when it's unfolded, and 1.2 to 1.5cm thick when folded up. Crease lines are said to be "barely noticeable."

Apple is reportedly planning a trio of OLED upgrades Macworld
A new report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg details some welcome display updates for some of Apple’s most popular products. The iPad mini, iPad Air, and MacBook Air are all due to move from LCDs to OLEDs. Unfortunately, the changes could take a few years.
The iPad mini will move to OLED first, according to Gurman. That change may come as soon as 2026, and could include a price increase of about $100.
The iPad Air will be next. It’s due for an update in the spring next year, but that version will still use an LCD. The OLED update will come in the update after that, likely in 2027. Apple has no plans to move the base iPad model to OLED anytime soon.
The MacBook Air will be last, with a planned OLED upgrade in 2028. The MacBook Air will get an upgrade to the M5 chip in the spring of 2026, but there will be no other significant changes.
Gurman notes that these plans aren’t final and could change, as always. An uncertain manufacturing and cost environment makes it hard to predict future roadmaps, and plans can and do change frequently.

Apple's 2026 iPad Mini Could Be Water Resistant Like the iPhone Apple is working on a version of the iPad mini that has a more water resistant design, reports Bloomberg. The iPad mini's updated casing would offer water resistance similar to the iPhone, making it safe for casual use in wet environments like a bath or a pool area.
Apple created a new speaker system for the iPad mini that uses vibration-based technology, allowing for the speaker holes in the device to be removed. Removing the speaker holes would cut down on areas where water could get into the crevices of the iPad mini.
For the iPhone, Apple uses adhesive and gaskets to protect the speaker holes and other ingress points from water intrusion, so the iPad mini's design would be different. The current iPad mini does not have an official water resistance rating and it is not safe to get it wet.
While the iPhone has IP68 water resistance that allows it to withstand submersion in water up to six meters deep for 30 minutes, it is not yet known what IP rating the iPad mini might feature.
The next-generation version of the iPad mini could also feature an OLED display, with the update coming as soon as 2026. Apple last refreshed the iPad mini in 2024 with the 7th-generation model.
Apple's iPad mini with OLED display technology and improved water resistance is expected to be more expensive, and Apple could charge up to $100 more for the device. The iPad mini is currently priced starting at $499.Related Roundup: iPad miniBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Neutral)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Expanding OLED Displays to iPad Mini, iPad Air, and MacBook Models Apple is developing versions of the iPad mini, iPad Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air with OLED displays, according to Bloomberg. Apple already uses OLED displays in the iPad Pro, and has plans to expand the technology to additional devices in the coming months and years.
The iPad mini will get an OLED display as soon as 2026, and improved water resistance is also a possibility.
Apple does not plan to bring OLED technology to the iPad Air in 2026, and the model coming next spring will continue to use an LCD display. While the iPad Air will get OLED at a later date, it probably won't happen until at least 2027.
Eventually, Apple will sell the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini all with OLED displays, but there are no plans to add OLED to the low-cost iPad.
The MacBook Pro will be updated with an OLED display when it is next updated, perhaps as soon as 2026. After adding an OLED display to the MacBook Pro, Apple will bring OLED to the MacBook Air. Apple has started early work on an OLED MacBook Air, but it isn't expected to see a launch until 2028 at the earliest.

macOS 26 Tahoe: Complete guide to the new Mac update Macworld
macOS 26 Tahoe: Summary
The new version of macOS, called macOS 26 Tahoe, was released on September 15 2025. Some M3 Mac Studio users were encountering issues and unable to install the update, but the macOS 26.0.1 update has addressed this issue.
macOS 26 Tahoe is also available in Developer and Public Betas. The macOS Tahoe beta program will continue even after the final release as Apple develops more features, implements bug fixes, and patches security holes. The current beta is macOS Tahoe 26.1.
Tahoe will run on Macs released since 2019. It runs on all M-series Macs, but it runs on a small number of Intel-powered models. This will be the last macOS version to support Intel-powered Macs.
With its new Liquid Glass interface, macOS 26 has its biggest design change since 2013.
New features in macOS Tahoe include more options for personalization, improvements to Spotlight and Shortcuts app, and the introduction of a Phone app on the Mac and all the associated features.
Like its counterparts on the other Apple devices, macOS now has a brand new look along with a new name. Because Apple is aligning the names of all the operating systems this year, the new version of macOS is called macOS 26 rather than macOS 16. It also takes the name Tahoe, inspired by the lake, beaches, and the ski resorts of that area of California.
Along with a big redesign, macOS 26 brings new Continuity features to bring your iPad, iPhone, and Mac even closer together, a brand new Phone app, and more. Spotlight also gets its biggest ever update with the ability to action things like sending emails directly from Spotlight.
Those with compatible Macs can now install macOS Tahoe (it was released on September 15, 2025). A developer and public beta are available, and the beta development will continue as Apple tests and then introduces even more features in macOS Tahoe. We have more information about joining the beta program and how to get the beta below.
You will find all the things you need to know about the new macOS Tahoe below, including which Macs are compatible with macOS 26 and the new features you can expect. Stay tuned to this superguide for everything you need to know about macOS 26 Tahoe, the latest version of the beta, and the new features that are still to come.

macOS Tahoe 26.0.1: 29 September 2025
Apple released the first version of macOS 26 Tahoe on September 15, 2025. The release coincided with the iOS 26 update.
The first update to Tahoe, macOS 26.0.1 became available on September 29, 2025. It contains a fix that prevented Tahoe from installing on the M3 Ultra Mac Studio.

macOS 26 Tahoe problems & fixes
Some M3 Ultra Mac Studio users have reported that they are unable to install macOS Tahoe. It seems the problematic Mac Studios already had Sequoia 15.7 installed, and during the attempted installation, Tahoe would look for a driver, and when it failed to find it, it resulted in a failed installation.
Apple has now issued the macOS 26.0.1 update to address the initial bugs, including the Mac Studio installation bug.

macOS 26 Tahoe Beta: What’s coming in macOS 26.1
Latest Developer beta version: 26.1 Release Candidate, October 28
Latest Public Beta version: 26.1, September 24
The macOS 26.1 beta includes fixes for problems with games controllers and some other issues. There are a lot more changes coming to iPhones with iOS 26.1.
Apple runs a developer beta as well as a public beta, and development continues even after the official macOS update is released, as Apple seeks to introduce new features that missed the initial introduction date.
Both betas are free, though the developer beta requires a free registration as a developer. Apple issues updates to the betas fairly regularly. The public beta updates tend to come a day or two after the updated developer beta. If you are interested in trying out the beta, you can join Apple’s beta program. For help installing the macOS beta, see our guide to installing the macOS beta.
macOS 26 Tahoe supported devices: Which Macs get macOS Tahoe
Requires M-series chip or Intel-based Mac computers with a T2 Security Chip
Apple Intelligence features require M1 or later
When Apple updates the operating system for its devices, it sometimes means that certain models are no longer supported. The good news is that Macs that ran macOS Sonoma will be able to run the new macOS. Apple states that the base requirement includes Macs with M-series chips and Intel-based Mac computers with a T2 security chip.
Here are Macs with Apple Silicon that will be able to run macOS Tahoe:
MacBook Air (M1/2020 and later)
MacBook Pro (M1/2020 and later)
iMac (M1/2021 and later)
Mac mini (M1/2020 and later)
Mac Studio (M1/2022 and later)
Mac Pro (M2/2023 and later)
There are four Intel-powered Macs able to run macOS Tahoe. These models won’t support Apple Intelligence features:
MacBook Pro (16‑inch, Intel/2019)
MacBook Pro (13‑inch, Intel/2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
iMac (Intel/mid 2020)
Mac Pro (Intel/2019)
Apple confirmed that this is the last version of macOS that will run on Intel Macs.
macOS 26 Tahoe design: Liquid Glass and other interface changes
Apple
At WWDC in June, Apple showed off some enticing new features for macOS that will be coming later in 2025. A number of new features and interface enhancements were promised, but one of the biggest changes is coming to all of Apple’s products: a new design based on a graphical user interface that Apple is calling Liquid Glass.
Apple showed off the brand new look for macOS in the WWDC keynote. As with Apple’s other operating systems, macOS Tahoe uses Apple’s new Liquid Glass effect to create reflective, glossy elements around the interface. The Liquid Glass elements will change color to reflect the content beneath as you scroll and will dynamically react. Buttons appear more curved and less flat.
You’ll see the effect in the Dock, sidebars, toolbars, and elsewhere. The menu bar is fully transparent, and you can adjust the transparency of icons in the Dock, for example. If you don’t like the new transparent look or if it affects how well you can see items, there is a way to reduce it, and in some instances, turn it in off altogether. Read: How to reduce transparency in macOS Tahoe.
This is the first time in years that Apple has made significant changes to the visual style of macOS, and it certainly makes the OS appear more modern.
Interface changes
Apple
Apple says the design overhaul will elevate the key elements of macOS and enhance the macOS experience. The cleaner design is intended to help the user to focus on their content rather than other distractions, while elements like the translucent menu bar will make the screen feel larger.
Users will be able to choose to add third-party apps to the menu bar and even drag widgets and buttons from the Control Centre into the menu bar, thanks to a customizable layout, similar to iOS 18. Users will also be able to add controls for their favorite apps to the Control Centre. We have a guide to how to use Control Centre in macOS Tahoe where you can read about how to add controls, remove the ones you don’t want, and arrange them in a way that makes sense for you.
Apple is taking advantage of the Liquid Glass introduction to bring some new icon designs to the Mac as well to help give macOS a fresh look. Some of the icons look drastically different, for others the changes are more subtle. The ‘hard drive’ icon will now be replaced with one that looks more like an SSD, for example.
The new icons tend to take the form of ‘squircles’. The changes may make some third party icons less recognisable. Take a look at: 21 of the new macOS Tahoe icons with new designs for the Finder, Automator, Calendar and Contacts icons among others. You can change the icons if you want, read: How to change the icon of a macOS storage device.
The new Finder icon.Apple
macOS will also gain a feature that arrived on the iPhone and iPad with iOS 18: tinted and dark app icons.
Users will be able to personalize their Mac in other ways, too, such as changing the color of folders and adding emoji or symbols to help them identify folders. Users can also pick personalised wallpapers and choose theme colors. If you want to change your folder color read: How to change folder color and add icons in Tahoe.
New dynamic screensavers will be included. One, based on the default macOS Tahoe wallpaper, depicts the landscapes of South Lake Tahoe in a stylized artistic manner, is available in both light and dark versions. See how it looks in Tahoe’s gorgeous new screen saver.
There are up to 15 other new screensavers with images of Tahoe at various time of the day, Himalayas, Goa, The Ganges and more.
Spotlight overhaul
Apple
Spotlight has always been much more than a search tool built into macOS, helping users find anything on their Macs, make calculations and conversions, and more. In macOS Tahoe, Spotlight will be able to do even more.
Spotlight’s design and functionality have been completely rethought for macOS 26, with changes that will help Mac users get things done faster.
Rather than being a single bar, on the right-hand side of the new Spotlight search box, you will find icons for things like apps, files, Shortcuts, Actions, and clipboard. Select one of these buttons, and Spotlight’s box expands to house relevant items in an easy-to-browse view. When you search for something, you’ll see relevant filters under your search terms – click one to quickly apply it.
Not only will Spotlight be the easiest way to find anything on your Mac, but in macOS 26, Spotlight will be contextually aware so it can make suggestions based on what you are doing. Search results will be listed based on their relevance to you, and it will be possible to use new filtering options for more specific search results.
Spotlight will also have the ability to perform actions that normally require you to be inside an app. For example, you will be able to create a calendar event, begin an audio recording, or play a podcast from within Spotlight. It will even let you fill out parameters for actions, such as typing out an email message and filling in the recipient and subject. You can essentially compose an email from inside Spotlight, without opening your email app.
This will be simplified further with Quick Keys, with which you will be able to type a short string of letters to launch an action, such as typing “sm” to start sending a message to a friend. An App Intents API will make it possible for third-party developers to add Spotlight shortcuts for their applications.
One of the most exciting new arrivals in Spotlight is Clipboard History, something we have wanted for years. Instead of being limited to pasting the last copied item, you will be able to view previous text and photos you’ve copied and re-insert them as needed. Why did it take Apple so long to offer this?
Apple
Tied to the new Spotlight is the new Apps app, which replaces Launchpad, which has been a feature of Macs for more than a decade and provides users with a Home page like view of all their apps. Instead Spotlight will be the means of finding apps. This will take some adjustment, especially if you were a Launchpad user. Learn more about Apps replacing Launchpad, and if you want to get Launchpad back we have a tutorial to show you how.
macOS 26 Tahoe: New and updated apps
There are also lots of updates coming to Apple apps that are included with iPads, iPhones, and Macs. Many of the changes are shared across all the new apps, but there are a number of Mac-specific updates coming.
Phone app
A Phone app on the Mac is the latest Continuity feature to come to macOS. Continuity is Apple’s name for the features that work seamlessly between Macs, iPad and iPhones, these include Handoff (which enables you to start a task on one device and switch to another to finish it), Universal Clipboard (which allows you to copy something on one device and paste it on another), and Universal Control (where you can use one mouse and keyboard to interface with more than one Mac), among other features.
With the new Phone app, users will be able to receive their calls and voicemail on the Mac. The Phone app is getting some new features of its own, including Call Screening, which is designed to help you avoid spam calls, and Hold Assist, which means you will never have to listen to hold music again.
With Call Screening, before a call is put through, an unknown caller will have to share their name and reason for calling, and you will then be provided with that information. With Hold Assist, when you join a queue to wait for a call operator and the hold music starts, you can choose to be called back.
YouTube / Apple
Live Activities
Another feature that demonstrates the interoperability between the iPhone and Mac is Live Activities.
In iOS 18, you can see a live update on your Lock Screen relating to things like a takeaway order. Live Activities show the process of a food delivery driver, for example. Now, that functionality is coming to the Mac.
It will be powered by the iPhone Mirroring function, and will take the form of an iPhone-style widget that you will see on the screen of your Mac.
Games app
The Games app is another one that is available across all three main operating system updates: iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. As with the iOS Games app, the Games app on the Mac will bring together all the games you have on your Mac (bought from the App Store, Apple Arcade and elsewhere), as well as your friends list, achievements, and leaderboards. Tabs will make it easy to find the games you and your friends are playing.
A new Game Overlay will make it easy to adjust settings for a particular game. You’ll also be able to chat with friends and ask them to play.

There is also a new Low Power Mode coming, which gamers will be able to turn on to maximise battery life when playing games.
And in related news, Metal 4 is coming, which will enable next-gen features for Mac game developers, such as MetalFX Frame Interpolation and MetalFX De-noising.
Apple
Shortcuts
Apple
The Shortcuts app is getting an overhaul in macOS Tahoe.
Shortcuts is a tool for automating tasks and repetitive actions. For those with more specific needs, there is also Automator on the Mac, but Shortcuts is simple to use and available on iPhone and iPad as well.
In Tahoe, Shortcuts will be able to run workflows based on factors like time of day, or in response to an email from a specific person arriving. This functionality was previously limited to the iPhone and iPad versions.
There are new intelligent actions available that can be used to create Smart Shortcuts. Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT can be used to enhance these Shortcuts. Apple says that “Users will see dedicated actions for features like summarizing text with Writing Tools or creating images with Image Playground.”
Live Translation
One of the most useful new features announced at WWDC is Live Translation. With Live Translation, you can text a friend who speaks a different language and have the translations appear in real time, or get instant translations during a phone call or FaceTime conference. Everyone gets their own translator.
You’ll be able to take advantage of Live Translation in the Phone app, Messages, and FaceTime on your Mac.
Apple
Journal
The Journal app, which arrived on iOS in 2023, is coming to the Mac (and iPad).
Terminal
Terminal is getting a colorful redesign and the Liquid Glass treatment, with support for 24-bit color and the ability to use Powerline fonts.
Reminders
Reminders is getting some help from Apple Intelligence. Reminders will scan a website, note, email or other content, then decide the most relevant action items for you based on its findings. You’ll be able to use Apple Intelligence to automatically categorize your reminders into sections, making them easier to find
There are also changes coming to Safari, Messages, Photos, FaceTime, and Notes.

There are also changes coming to Safari, Messages, Photos, FaceTime, and Notes.
macOS 26 Tahoe: Complete guide to the new Mac update Macworld
macOS 26 Tahoe: Summary
Stay tuned to this superguide for everything you need to know about macOS 26 Tahoe, the latest version of the beta, and the new features that are still to come.

macOS 26 Tahoe latest version
macOS Tahoe 26.0.1: 29 September 2025

Apple Says Oppo Engineer Stole Apple Watch Trade Secrets, Gave Presentation to Hundreds Chinese smartphone maker Oppo recruited a former Apple Watch engineer who stole trade secret information from Apple and then gave a presentation on that data to hundreds of Oppo employees, Apple said in a court filing last week [PDF].
Back in August, Apple accused former employee Chen Shi of stealing Apple Watch trade secrets to provide to Oppo, and since then, the two companies have been battling it out in court. Apple claims that Oppo is withholding information, while Oppo says no trade secrets were disclosed.
Apple discovered that Shi gave a presentation on Apple sensor technology, providing insight into Apple's sensor development and future product plans. Internal Oppo communications promoted an "Apple Sensors" talk with Shi, titled "Apple's Sensor Hardware R&D Philosophy and Methodology." A tagline for the meeting said "Are you curious about how Apple's sensors are developed?"
Apple claims that Shi's presentation included slides taken directly from materials procured from Apple, and that he answered specific questions about sensor design at Apple. Oppo is accused of encouraging Shi to share the trade secret information.
Further, Apple says Oppo has not provided all of the documents or forensic device reports that Apple has asked for to determine the extent of the alleged data theft. Apple says that Dr. Shi was given the opportunity to delete information from Oppo's system after the original lawsuit was filed.
Apple asked the court for injunctive relief to stop Shi from sharing further information, and to stop Oppo products from being developed with Apple technology. Apple requested that employees exposed to Apple's trade secrets be quarantined and removed from any competitive technologies.
Oppo says that it conducted a comprehensive search of the systems that Shi had access to, and that there is "no indication that Oppo received any Apple trade secret information" from him. Oppo claims that the presentation Shi provided discussed "general engineering principles" that did not include information sourced from Apple.
Now the search is complete, and there is no indication that OPPO received any Apple trade secret information from Dr. Shi. There is consequently no basis for Apple to request preliminary injunctive relief, and it is not entitled to any such relief. OPPO has already looked for Apple's "trade secrets" and "confidential information" and found nothing that it might disclose, retain, use or be obligated to return.
Shi has agreed to participate in a deposition, but he has asked to extend the deadline because of a recent medical condition diagnosis that is "likely to be significantly exacerbated by participation in a lengthy, high-stress, and adversarial proceeding" like the deposition with Apple. He has also asked the court to issue a protective order to limit or stay his deposition because of his medical condition.
Oppo has been ordered by the court to provide the documents that Apple is requesting by October 31, or on a rolling basis starting on October 28 if there is a high volume of documents that need to be reviewed.
Prior to leaving Apple, Shi downloaded 63 files from Apple's protected Box folder and transferred them to a USB drive, then he searched for information on how to cover his tracks. Shi also reportedly attended "dozens" of one-on-one meetings with Apple Watch technical team members to learn about their research before he left the company.
Shi told Oppo that he would "collect as much information as possible" on heart rate sensing methods, and he now works at Oppo developing sensing technology.
In the original filing, Apple requested restitution, damages, punitive damages, attorneys' fees, and an injunction to prevent Oppo and Shi from disclosing Apple's trade secrets.Tags: Apple Lawsuits, OppoThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

MacBook Air and Pro batteries compared: Which MacBook has better battery life Macworld
Measuring MacBook battery life in straight hours of real-world usage (as Apple likes to do) is not always an accurate metric for comparison purposes as so many use and environmental factors play a part. We can, however, rely on straight technical specifications to tell us the stated battery capacities of each MacBook.
Where Apple is secretive about iPhone battery specifications (see our list of iPhone battery capacities based on teardowns), the company does list MacBook capacities in Watt hours (Wh). We have trawled through the Apple product Tech Specs pages from 2009 to 2025 to bring you as complete a list as we can gather using official Apple battery declarations.
The watt-hour is a unit of energy equivalent to one watt (1W) of power utilized for one hour of time. it is calculated by multiplying the number of Amps with the battery voltage. The higher the number of Wh the longer a battery will last using the same application. Batteries will lose efficiency over time so don’t expect a 2009-era MacBook battery to still possess the same power as it did when it was new or more than a 2025 model, even if it had an originally higher Wh rating.
Read How to test a MacBook battery: see if it needs replacing & replace it.
Our list starts with older MacBooks that used an Intel processor, and works its way to the latest M-series (for example, M1, M2 Pro, M3, M4, M5) MacBooks.

How much battery life does my MacBook have?
Now that you know the numbers for your model, how does that Wh battery capacity play out in terms of real-life usage? Here are Apple’s claims for the running potential of its M-series MacBook Pro and Air batteries. All the MacBook Air models, whether with a 13-inch or 15-inch screen, M1, M2, M3 or M4 chip, last the same amount of time, according to Apple.
There is more variance with the Pro models, which range in screen size from 13 to 16 inches.

Does the MacBook Pro have a better battery than the MacBook Air?
As you can see from the above battery capacities, the MacBook Pro features higher capacity batteries than the MacBook Air, although not by a truly significant margin.
For example, the 13-inch M3 MacBook Air’s battery was rated at 52.6Wh, while the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro had a 58.2Wh battery.
The larger the laptop, the higher wattage is the battery—as they generally require more power to run the larger, brighter screens. The Air features a Liquid Retina display with 500 nits brightness while the Pro has a superior 1,000-nit Liquid Retina XDR display.
The newer MacBooks with more efficient processors will also gain extra battery life by not stressing the batteries as hard to complete the same tasks.
Apple claims that the current 13-inch M4 MacBook Air (53.8Wh) boasts up to 18 hours Apple TV app movie playback. The 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro has a higher capacity 72.4Wh battery and can keep going for 24 hours on the movie playback. The 16-inch M4 Pro has the same 24-hour video playback claim despite its near 100Wh battery but it has to run the larger screen.
Battery life depends on many factors, particularly which and how many applications you are running at one time.

Sometimes it’s worth paying for the bells and whistles. Following up on my review of Avira Free Security for Mac, it’s time to look at Avira Prime, which offers the same antiviral elements as Avira Free Security while opening up access to the tools and modules that require an Avira Prime subscription in Avira Free Security.
Similar to the free version, the application includes the following modules: Status, Activity, Scheduler, Virus Scans, Protection Scans, Quarantine, VPN, Passwords, Cookie Cleaner, Identity Assistant, Junk Cleaner, Uninstaller, and Startup Apps.
There’s a lot Avira Prime does right, and its antiviral/anti-malware elements, as expected, hold their own just as well as the previously reviewed Avira Free application.
It did allow occasional culprits such as AdWind and other malware samples, which had to be removed with a third-party utility, although you have to ignore and bypass several warning screens to do so. But, while not invincible in terms of detection and removal, it still holds its own in terms of testing custom volumes and folders such as USB flash drives.
The Scheduler remains excellent, and you can customize specific folders and volumes to be scanned. USB Protection is also available under Avira Prime, allowing you to insert a USB flash drive and have it run a scan.
In terms of the modules that are inaccessible in the Avira Free version, Avira Prime opens up access to a more robust VPN, its Cookie Cleaner Module, and its Passwords password locker, as well as its Identity Assistant, Uninstaller, and Startup Apps modules.
Foundry
These programs perform well, if somewhat oddly at times, and Avira’s Phantom VPN application allows for geolocation and more data traffic than the 500 megabyte trial allowance offered in the free version.
Oddly enough, Avira’s Phantom VPN application hooks in through the Mac App Store, which launches every time you open up the function in Avira Prime. The Mac App Store launches the Phantom VPN application and makes you wonder if this couldn’t have been done without the strange extra steps.
Avira seems to have jumped on the idea of cookie and data tracking management with both feet, and Avira Prime’s Cookie Cleaner module not only located 5,891 cookies on my MacBook Pro, but also offered full control for selection and removal of specific cookies, which was impressive.
Foundry
Other modules, such as Passwords and Uninstaller, worked well, even if the Passwords module functions as yet another password manager/locker and requires a commitment on the part of the user to make this a primary part of their day-to-day web browsing life.
The Uninstaller proved interesting in that it listed the applications you might expect, but also lower-level applications that aren’t generally listed in the Applications folder, which came in handy for removing them.
The Startup Apps module worked well, but seemed fairly basic in its coverage, not going into deeper elements of the initial system load. The effort is there, but more dedicated competitors do it better.
If there was one module that felt short in testing, it’d be the Identity Assistant, which offers a robust amount of coverage (up to 10 credit cards, 10 bank accounts, 10 gamer tags, 5 email addresses, 5 phone numbers, 5 insurance numbers, 5 physical addresses, 1 driver’s license number, and 1 mother’s maiden name) and offers some coverage for a single email address within the standard Avira subscription. The application then offers the upgraded plan for $38.99 for the first year and $64.99 for each additional year, which feels as if you’re being hauled toward yet another subscription without even a trial period to test the full feature set out.
Still, there’s a lot to give Avira Prime credit for, and its impressive core functions from the free version remain. Drive scan speeds, except for a Full Scan (which can run as an overnight function on full hard drives), are speedy; the application can scan .dmg and .zip archives, the Junk Cleaner module has a good level of customization and helped recover several gigabytes of drive space, and there’s a 60-day money-back guarantee for purchases, which is never a bad thing.
With the exception of the Identity Assistant module and the potential second subscription that may be involved with that, you get a fair amount for $9.99 a month. Avira has done a good job with its Prime application, and it’s worth your consideration.
Avira Prime, which requires macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later to install and run, is available for $59.99/£51.99 for the first year, $109.99/£94.99 for subsequent years, or $9.99/£8.99 per month, with the plan covering up to five Mac, PC, iOS, and Android devices.
Should you buy Avira Prime for Mac
If you found yourself trying and liking Avira Free Security for the Mac and were eager for the additional bells and whistles, Avira Prime makes a compelling argument with a strong feature set.
Elements like the Cookie Cleaner and Phantom VPN are impressive, and the strong antiviral elements are on par with Avira’s competitors.
Still, Avira Prime isn’t perfect; the VPN module feels as if there are additional awkward steps that shouldn’t be there to activate it, the Startup Apps module feels bare bones, and the Identity Assistant module places itself in an upsell position that no company wants to be in. Overall, there’s a strong toolset to be considered, and this is definitely worth trying out, given the 60-day money-back guarantee, if you’re interested.
See how Avira Prime compares to other Mac antivirus solutions in our round up of the best.

The biggest deal about the 20th anniversary iPhone might be the buttons Macworld
The iPhone was introduced to the world in 2007, so the 20th anniversary is coming up in 2027. To mark the occasion, Apple is reportedly planning a drastic design change not unlike the iPhone X. One of those changes will reportedly involves a longtime rumor regarding the buttons on the iPhone.
On Weibo, user Setsuna Digital, who has a track record of accuracy with Apple rumors, reports that the heptic button implementation has “completed functional verification” and is set for production in the 2027 iPhone. All of the buttons will implement solid-state controls, and Apple will use vibration feedback to give the user a sense of how they are using the buttons.
Additionally, Setsuna Digital reports that the Camera Control button will be modified, with Apple removing the capacitive sensing layer, leaving only pressure sensing. “Subsequent iterations will introduce piezoelectric ceramics for localized vibration feedback,” wrote Setsuna Digital. That coud arrive as early as the iPhone 18 next year.
Rumors of Apple switching to haptic buttons go back to the iPhone 15, where Apple reportedly had plans to implement solid-state button tech but changed course due to engineering issues. Haptic buttons have an advantage in that they have few moving parts, thus making them less prone to wear and tear. To make the haptic buttons feel “real,” Setsuna Digital said that a vibration-based sound system and AI audio algorithms may be used to provide physical feedback. Similar technology is already used in the MacBook’s trackpad.
The haptic buttons are just part of a major redesign Apple has planned for 2027. Bloomberg’s Mark Guram recently reported that Apple in 2027 is working on an iPhone design that will “fit nicely” with the iOS 26 Liquid Glass UI, with an iPhone that has “curved glass edges all around.”

It also wants to replace your physical car key. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
