Apple competitor Samsung has a line of "Family Hub" smart refrigerators equipped with integrated displays, and anything with a display can show you an ad. Starting later this month, Samsung is planning to take advantage of that refrigerator advertising space, and Family Hub refrigerators in the U.S. will get a widget that shows ads. Samsung confirmed to Fortune last month that it was testing a "pilot program" to offer some fridge owners "promotions and curated advertisements," and now Samsung is ready to provide ads to even more users. 2024 Family Hub refrigerators will get a software update this week, and the update will bring ads to the refrigerator display when it's idle. Ads will start showing up on November 3. Family Hub refrigerators are priced starting at $1,899, but they go up to $3,499. The refrigerators include 21.5-inch to 32-inch screens and are advertised as keeping families connected. Users can share pictures, videos, and drawings with Google Photos, get recipes, play music, manage calendar events, and buy items from Amazon. Higher-end refrigerators feature "AI Vision" that keeps track of the items inside. The ads are part of a new Cover screen widget, and they'll be displayed alongside other information like the weather, calendar events, and news. Samsung says that users can choose to opt out of the ads for now through the Advertisements tab of the Settings menu, though that disables all widget features. Ads can also be dismissed from the Cover screen, and the specific ad dismissed won't appear again during the campaign period. Samsung says that ads won't appear when the Cover screen shows art or album themes. Samsung's decision to include ads on the Family Hub refrigerators has come as a surprise to many customers because the fridges have been available for years now. Many who bought the refrigerator without any expectation that it would show ads will now be subject to advertising. There will undoubtedly be customers unaware that they can opt out of the ads, because Samsung has decided to turn ads on by default. To begin with, the Family Hub refrigerators will only show ads for Samsung products, but Samsung seems to be planning to allow third-party advertisers to show ads, according to The Verge. Apple doesn't make refrigerators, but it too is ramping up the number of places where it displays ads. Adobe today announced a new AI Assistant for Photoshop that will allow designers and creative professionals to automate repetitive tasks. Powered by agentic AI, the AI assistant can complete creative tasks, offer personalized recommendations, and provide tutorials. The AI Assistant is also coming to Adobe Express, Adobe's cloud-based design tool. With both Photoshop and Express, users can take advantage of conversation-based creation and editing tools. Adobe says that it's easy to transition between conversational creation and hands-on editing with access to manual tools. There are several other AI tools coming to photoshop, including Generative Upscale and Generative Fill with partner models. Generative Fill can be used with Gemini 2.5 Flash, Black Forest Labs LUX.1 Kontext, and Firefly Image Models for removing or modifying content with text-based prompts. A new Harmonize feature is able to blend people or objects into new scenes, matching light, color, and tone to provide natural results. Harmonize, Generative Fill, and Generative Upscale with access to partner models are available today, while Photoshop AI Assistant is available through a private beta waitlist. Samsung has been working on a smartphone with not just one fold, but two, and the first photos of the upcoming device surfaced today (via The Chosun Daily). Image via The Chosun Daily Samsung displayed the tri-fold smartphone at APEC 2025 Korea. The device is designed to transform from a ~6.5-inch smartphone into a ~10-inch tablet-style display. It will fold twice, rather than just once like the standard Galaxy Fold smartphones. There was no opportunity for APEC attendees to try the smartphone because it was displayed in a transparent case, but The Korea Economic Daily was still able to share some details. The smartphone appears to be about 4.2mm thick when it's unfolded, and 1.2 to 1.5cm thick when folded up. Crease lines are said to be "barely noticeable." Macworld A new report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg details some welcome display updates for some of Apple’s most popular products. The iPad mini, iPad Air, and MacBook Air are all due to move from LCDs to OLEDs. Unfortunately, the changes could take a few years. The iPad mini will move to OLED first, according to Gurman. That change may come as soon as 2026, and could include a price increase of about $100. The iPad Air will be next. It’s due for an update in the spring next year, but that version will still use an LCD. The OLED update will come in the update after that, likely in 2027. Apple has no plans to move the base iPad model to OLED anytime soon. The MacBook Air will be last, with a planned OLED upgrade in 2028. The MacBook Air will get an upgrade to the M5 chip in the spring of 2026, but there will be no other significant changes. Gurman notes that these plans aren’t final and could change, as always. Apple is working on a version of the iPad mini that has a more water resistant design, reports Bloomberg. The iPad mini's updated casing would offer water resistance similar to the iPhone, making it safe for casual use in wet environments like a bath or a pool area. Apple created a new speaker system for the iPad mini that uses vibration-based technology, allowing for the speaker holes in the device to be removed. Removing the speaker holes would cut down on areas where water could get into the crevices of the iPad mini. For the iPhone, Apple uses adhesive and gaskets to protect the speaker holes and other ingress points from water intrusion, so the iPad mini's design would be different. The current iPad mini does not have an official water resistance rating and it is not safe to get it wet. While the iPhone has IP68 water resistance that allows it to withstand submersion in water up to six meters deep for 30 minutes, it is not yet known what IP rating the iPad mini might feature. The next-generation version of the iPad mini could also feature an OLED display, with the update coming as soon as 2026. Apple last refreshed the iPad mini in 2024 with the 7th-generation model. Apple's iPad mini with OLED display technology and improved water resistance is expected to be more expensive, and Apple could charge up to $100 more for the device. Apple is developing versions of the iPad mini, iPad Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air with OLED displays, according to Bloomberg. Apple already uses OLED displays in the iPad Pro, and has plans to expand the technology to additional devices in the coming months and years. The iPad mini will get an OLED display as soon as 2026, and improved water resistance is also a possibility. Apple does not plan to bring OLED technology to the iPad Air in 2026, and the model coming next spring will continue to use an LCD display. While the iPad Air will get OLED at a later date, it probably won't happen until at least 2027. Eventually, Apple will sell the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini all with OLED displays, but there are no plans to add OLED to the low-cost iPad. The MacBook Pro will be updated with an OLED display when it is next updated, perhaps as soon as 2026. After adding an OLED display to the MacBook Pro, Apple will bring OLED to the MacBook Air. Apple has started early work on an OLED MacBook Air, but it isn't expected to see a launch until 2028 at the earliest. Select one of these buttons, and Spotlight’s box expands to house relevant items in an easy-to-browse view. When you search for something, you’ll see relevant filters under your search terms – click one to quickly apply it. The Phone app is getting some new features of its own, including Call Screening, which is designed to help you avoid spam calls, and Hold Assist, which means you will never have to listen to hold music again. With Call Screening, before a call is put through, an unknown caller will have to share their name and reason for calling, and you will then be provided with that information. With Hold Assist, when you join a queue to wait for a call operator and the hold music starts, you can choose to be called back. In iOS 18, you can see a live update on your Lock Screen relating to things like a takeaway order. Live Activities show the process of a food delivery driver, for example. Now, that functionality is coming to the Mac. It will be powered by the iPhone Mirroring function, and will take the form of an iPhone-style widget that you will see on the screen of your Mac. Games app The Games app is another one that is available across all three main operating system updates: iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. As with the iOS Games app, the Games app on the Mac will bring together all the games you have on your Mac (bought from the App Store, Apple Arcade and elsewhere), as well as your friends list, achievements, and leaderboards. Spotlight overhaul Apple Spotlight has always been much more than a search tool built into macOS, helping users find anything on their Macs, make calculations and conversions, and more. In macOS Tahoe, Spotlight will be able to do even more. Spotlight’s design and functionality have been completely rethought for macOS 26, with changes that will help Mac users get things done faster. Rather than being a single bar, on the right-hand side of the new Spotlight search box, you will find icons for things like apps, files, Shortcuts, Actions, and clipboard. Select one of these buttons, and Spotlight’s box expands to house relevant items in an easy-to-browse view. When you search for something, you’ll see relevant filters under your search terms – click one to quickly apply it. Not only will Spotlight be the easiest way to find anything on your Mac, but in macOS 26, Spotlight will be contextually aware so it can make suggestions based on what you are doing. Search results will be listed based on their relevance to you, and it will be possible to use new filtering options for more specific search results. Spotlight will also have the ability to perform actions that normally require you to be inside an app. For example, you will be able to create a calendar event, begin an audio recording, or play a podcast from within Spotlight. It will even let you fill out parameters for actions, such as typing out an email message and filling in the recipient and subject. You can essentially compose an email from inside Spotlight, without opening your email app. This will be simplified further with Quick Keys, with which you will be able to type a short string of letters to launch an action, such as typing “sm” to start sending a message to a friend. An App Intents API will make it possible for third-party developers to add Spotlight shortcuts for their applications. One of the most exciting new arrivals in Spotlight is Clipboard History, something we have wanted for years. Instead of being limited to pasting the last copied item, you will be able to view previous text and photos you’ve copied and re-insert them as needed. Why did it take Apple so long to offer this? Apple Tied to the new Spotlight is the new Apps app, which replaces Launchpad, which has been a feature of Macs for more than a decade and provides users with a Home page like view of all their apps. Many of the changes are shared across all the new apps, but there are a number of Mac-specific updates coming. Phone app A Phone app on the Mac is the latest Continuity feature to come to macOS. Continuity is Apple’s name for the features that work seamlessly between Macs, iPad and iPhones, these include Handoff (which enables you to start a task on one device and switch to another to finish it), Universal Clipboard (which allows you to copy something on one device and paste it on another), and Universal Control (where you can use one mouse and keyboard to interface with more than one Mac), among other features. With the new Phone app, users will be able to receive their calls and voicemail on the Mac. The Phone app is getting some new features of its own, including Call Screening, which is designed to help you avoid spam calls, and Hold Assist, which means you will never have to listen to hold music again. With Call Screening, before a call is put through, an unknown caller will have to share their name and reason for calling, and you will then be provided with that information. With Hold Assist, when you join a queue to wait for a call operator and the hold music starts, you can choose to be called back. YouTube / Apple Live Activities Another feature that demonstrates the interoperability between the iPhone and Mac is Live Activities. In iOS 18, you can see a live update on your Lock Screen relating to things like a takeaway order. Live Activities show the process of a food delivery driver, for example. Now, that functionality is coming to the Mac. It will be powered by the iPhone Mirroring function, and will take the form of an iPhone-style widget that you will see on the screen of your Mac. Games app The Games app is another one that is available across all three main operating system updates: iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. As with the iOS Games app, the Games app on the Mac will bring together all the games you have on your Mac (bought from the App Store, Apple Arcade and elsewhere), as well as your friends list, achievements, and leaderboards. Tabs will make it easy to find the games you and your friends are playing. A new Game Overlay will make it easy to adjust settings for a particular game. Apple Shortcuts Apple The Shortcuts app is getting an overhaul in macOS Tahoe. Shortcuts is a tool for automating tasks and repetitive actions. For those with more specific needs, there is also Automator on the Mac, but Shortcuts is simple to use and available on iPhone and iPad as well. In Tahoe, Shortcuts will be able to run workflows based on factors like time of day, or in response to an email from a specific person arriving. This functionality was previously limited to the iPhone and iPad versions. There are new intelligent actions available that can be used to create Smart Shortcuts. Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT can be used to enhance these Shortcuts. Apple says that “Users will see dedicated actions for features like summarizing text with Writing Tools or creating images with Image Playground.” Live Translation One of the most useful new features announced at WWDC is Live Translation. With Live Translation, you can text a friend who speaks a different language and have the translations appear in real time, or get instant translations during a phone call or FaceTime conference. Everyone gets their own translator. You’ll be able to take advantage of Live Translation in the Phone app, Messages, and FaceTime on your Mac. Apple Journal The Journal app, which arrived on iOS in 2023, is coming to the Mac (and iPad). Terminal Terminal is getting a colorful redesign and the Liquid Glass treatment, with support for 24-bit color and the ability to use Powerline fonts. Reminders Reminders is getting some help from Apple Intelligence. Reminders will scan a website, note, email or other content, then decide the most relevant action items for you based on its findings. Chinese smartphone maker Oppo recruited a former Apple Watch engineer who stole trade secret information from Apple and then gave a presentation on that data to hundreds of Oppo employees, Apple said in a court filing last week [PDF]. Back in August, Apple accused former employee Chen Shi of stealing Apple Watch trade secrets to provide to Oppo, and since then, the two companies have been battling it out in court. Apple claims that Oppo is withholding information, while Oppo says no trade secrets were disclosed. Apple discovered that Shi gave a presentation on Apple sensor technology, providing insight into Apple's sensor development and future product plans. Internal Oppo communications promoted an "Apple Sensors" talk with Shi, titled "Apple's Sensor Hardware R&D Philosophy and Methodology." A tagline for the meeting said "Are you curious about how Apple's sensors are developed?" Apple claims that Shi's presentation included slides taken directly from materials procured from Apple, and that he answered specific questions about sensor design at Apple. Oppo is accused of encouraging Shi to share the trade secret information. Further, Apple says Oppo has not provided all of the documents or forensic device reports that Apple has asked for to determine the extent of the alleged data theft. Apple says that Dr. Shi was given the opportunity to delete information from Oppo's system after the original lawsuit was filed. Apple asked the court for injunctive relief to stop Shi from sharing further information, and to stop Oppo products from being developed with Apple technology. Apple requested that employees exposed to Apple's trade secrets be quarantined and removed from any competitive technologies. Oppo says that it conducted a comprehensive search of the systems that Shi had access to, and that there is "no indication that Oppo received any Apple trade secret information" from him. Oppo claims that the presentation Shi provided discussed "general engineering principles" that did not include information sourced from Apple. Now the search is complete, and there is no indication that OPPO received any Apple trade secret information from Dr. Shi. There is consequently no basis for Apple to request preliminary injunctive relief, and it is not entitled to any such relief. OPPO has already looked for Apple's "trade secrets" and "confidential information" and found nothing that it might disclose, retain, use or be obligated to return. Shi has agreed to participate in a deposition, but he has asked to extend the deadline because of a recent medical condition diagnosis that is "likely to be significantly exacerbated by participation in a lengthy, high-stress, and adversarial proceeding" like the deposition with Apple. He has also asked the court to issue a protective order to limit or stay his deposition because of his medical condition. Oppo has been ordered by the court to provide the documents that Apple is requesting by October 31, or on a rolling basis starting on October 28 if there is a high volume of documents that need to be reviewed. Prior to leaving Apple, Shi downloaded 63 files from Apple's protected Box folder and transferred them to a USB drive, then he searched for information on how to cover his tracks. Shi also reportedly attended "dozens" of one-on-one meetings with Apple Watch technical team members to learn about their research before he left the company. Shi told Oppo that he would "collect as much information as possible" on heart rate sensing methods, and he now works at Oppo developing sensing technology. Following up on my review of Avira Free Security for Mac, it’s time to look at Avira Prime, which offers the same antiviral elements as Avira Free Security while opening up access to the tools and modules that require an Avira Prime subscription in Avira Free Security. Similar to the free version, the application includes the following modules: Status, Activity, Scheduler, Virus Scans, Protection Scans, Quarantine, VPN, Passwords, Cookie Cleaner, Identity Assistant, Junk Cleaner, Uninstaller, and Startup Apps. There’s a lot Avira Prime does right, and its antiviral/anti-malware elements, as expected, hold their own just as well as the previously reviewed Avira Free application. It did allow occasional culprits such as AdWind and other malware samples, which had to be removed with a third-party utility, although you have to ignore and bypass several warning screens to do so. But, while not invincible in terms of detection and removal, it still holds its own in terms of testing custom volumes and folders such as USB flash drives. The Scheduler remains excellent, and you can customize specific folders and volumes to be scanned. USB Protection is also available under Avira Prime, allowing you to insert a USB flash drive and have it run a scan. In terms of the modules that are inaccessible in the Avira Free version, Avira Prime opens up access to a more robust VPN, its Cookie Cleaner Module, and its Passwords password locker, as well as its Identity Assistant, Uninstaller, and Startup Apps modules. The Uninstaller proved interesting in that it listed the applications you might expect, but also lower-level applications that aren’t generally listed in the Applications folder, which came in handy for removing them. The Startup Apps module worked well, but seemed fairly basic in its coverage, not going into deeper elements of the initial system load. The effort is there, but more dedicated competitors do it better. If there was one module that felt short in testing, it’d be the Identity Assistant, which offers a robust amount of coverage (up to 10 credit cards, 10 bank accounts, 10 gamer tags, 5 email addresses, 5 phone numbers, 5 insurance numbers, 5 physical addresses, 1 driver’s license number, and 1 mother’s maiden name) and offers some coverage for a single email address within the standard Avira subscription. The application then offers the upgraded plan for $38.99 for the first year and $64.99 for each additional year, which feels as if you’re being hauled toward yet another subscription without even a trial period to test the full feature set out. Still, there’s a lot to give Avira Prime credit for, and its impressive core functions from the free version remain. Drive scan speeds, except for a Full Scan (which can run as an overnight function on full hard drives), are speedy; the application can scan .dmg and .zip archives, the Junk Cleaner module has a good level of customization and helped recover several gigabytes of drive space, and there’s a 60-day money-back guarantee for purchases, which is never a bad thing. With the exception of the Identity Assistant module and the potential second subscription that may be involved with that, you get a fair amount for $9.99 a month. Avira has done a good job with its Prime application, and it’s worth your consideration. Avira Prime, which requires macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later to install and run, is available for $59.99/£51.99 for the first year, $109.99/£94.99 for subsequent years, or $9.99/£8.99 per month, with the plan covering up to five Mac, PC, iOS, and Android devices. Should you buy Avira Prime for Mac If you found yourself trying and liking Avira Free Security for the Mac and were eager for the additional bells and whistles, Avira Prime makes a compelling argument with a strong feature set. Elements like the Cookie Cleaner and Phantom VPN are impressive, and the strong antiviral elements are on par with Avira’s competitors. Still, Avira Prime isn’t perfect; the VPN module feels as if there are additional awkward steps that shouldn’t be there to activate it, the Startup Apps module feels bare bones, and the Identity Assistant module places itself in an upsell position that no company wants to be in. To mark the occasion, Apple is reportedly planning a drastic design change not unlike the iPhone X. One of those changes will reportedly involves a longtime rumor regarding the buttons on the iPhone. On Weibo, user Setsuna Digital, who has a track record of accuracy with Apple rumors, reports that the heptic button implementation has “completed functional verification” and is set for production in the 2027 iPhone. All of the buttons will implement solid-state controls, and Apple will use vibration feedback to give the user a sense of how they are using the buttons. Additionally, Setsuna Digital reports that the Camera Control button will be modified, with Apple removing the capacitive sensing layer, leaving only pressure sensing. “Subsequent iterations will introduce piezoelectric ceramics for localized vibration feedback,” wrote Setsuna Digital. That coud arrive as early as the iPhone 18 next year. Rumors of Apple switching to haptic buttons go back to the iPhone 15, where Apple reportedly had plans to implement solid-state button tech but changed course due to engineering issues. Haptic buttons have an advantage in that they have few moving parts, thus making them less prone to wear and tear. To make the haptic buttons feel “real,” Setsuna Digital said that a vibration-based sound system and AI audio algorithms may be used to provide physical feedback. Similar technology is already used in the MacBook’s trackpad. The haptic buttons are just part of a major redesign Apple has planned for 2027. It’s fallen behind its rivals in recent years as it lacked support for Macs with Apple Silicon, but it made something of a comeback with the 7.1 update in September 2024 that finally added support for Apple Silicon alongside older Intel Macs. A number of maintenance updates have followed since then, bringing VirtualBox to version 7.2.4 at the end of October 2025. VirtualBox is owned by the database giant Oracle, but it’s available as an open-source program and is free for personal and educational use. There’s also an option to buy an annual license for business and commercial use, which costs $61/£48.73 per license with a year of technical support included. However, there’s a minimum order of 100 licenses for business users, so it’s clear that Oracle has primarily got its sights set on its existing base of large corporate customers. The Setup Wizard in VirtualBox now allows you to choose either Basic or Expert modes. Foundry There are Linux and Windows versions of VirtualBox too, which allows you to use your virtual machines on many different types of computers. Just remember that you’ll still need to pay for your own Windows license in order to install Windows on your VM, and that Macs with Apple Silicon will need to use a special version of Windows, called Windows On ARM, in order to create a Windows VM. VirtualBox VMs Like many open-source programs, VirtualBox lacks the polished interface and ease of use that you can find in commercial software such as Parallels Desktop, and this means that you do need a reasonable amount of technical knowledge in order to figure out how it works. Version 7.1 did introduce a new StartUp Wizard that attempts to simplify the set-up process by offering separate ‘Basic’ and ‘Expert’ modes, but this only adds a superficial gloss to the program’s dense and complex interface and it took us a number of attempts to successfully create a Windows VM using a disk image of Windows 11 On ARM on our M2 MacBook Pro. Even the initial download process is confusing, as there are two separate files that you need to download. There’s a ‘platform package’ for your particular computer – Mac, PC or Linux – but also an Extensions Pack that isn’t clearly explained and left us wading through the vast PDF manual for more information. The manual is clearly designed for IT managers and developers – almost 200 pages long just for the basic installation and setup instructions – and we found even simple tasks such as changing the resolution of the virtual machine window on our Mac desktop baffling at times. You can choose how much memory and processor power you assign to your virtual machines. Foundry Thankfully, things get a little easier once you’ve worked through the initial set-up process. The program allows you to specify the number of CPU cores and the amount of memory that you assign to the Windows VM, and there’s a useful Resource monitor that shows the CPU and memory usage of your VM so that you can decide whether to allocate more processor power or memory. You can create shared folders that allow you to transfer files between the macOS and Windows VM, drag-and-drop files between macOS and Windows, and also share the contents of the Mac Clipboard with the VM. Our Windows 11 VM was also able to automatically use our Mac’s internet connection so that we could browse the web and use Microsoft’s Copilot app for online queries. And, for Oracle’s corporate users, there are options for using VirtualBox with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Apple Silicon Support The installation process wasn’t exactly straightforward but, to be fair, the Windows 11 VM that we created on our MacBook Pro did run smoothly even with the default settings that just assign a single CPU and only 4MB of RAM to the VM. We were able to run general productivity tools such as Microsoft’s Edge browser and Outlook email with no trouble at all, and were even able to experiment with the Copilot AI features in Windows 11 as well. Gamers are out of luck though, as VirtualBox no longer supports 3D acceleration on Intel Macs, while 3D acceleration on Macs with Apple Silicon is described as ‘experimental’. Performance is good enough for running general productivity tools, such as Microsoft Copilot. Foundry The support for Apple Silicon also looks a little rough around the edges at times. VirtualBox can run the Windows VM inside its own window on the Mac desktop, and it also provides a ‘Seamless’ mode that lets individual Windows apps – such as the Edge browser – run right on the Mac desktop as though they were native Mac apps (similar to the Coherence mode in Parallels Desktop). However, apps running in Seamless mode didn’t like being moved around on our MacBook screen, sometimes leaving odd graphical after-images lingering on-screen as we moved the windows to a new position. We also experienced occasional crashes when shutting down our Windows VM – although these didn’t seem to affect the VM when we subsequently launched it once more. Should You Buy VirtualBox? From a technical point of view, VirtualBox works well and is capable of running a variety of Windows apps and software on Macs with both Intel and Apple Silicon processors. And, of course, we welcome the fact that the app is free for personal and educational use. However, the complexity of the program means that it will primarily appeal to corporate users who can rely on their IT department to manage VirtualBox for them, or perhaps developers or students who have the technical knowledge to manage the installation process for themselves. According to a new report, the M6 iPad Pro will get a new cooling feature along with its updated chipset. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman discusses the iPhone 17 Pro’s new vapor chamber, and its importance in tackling the overheating issues some users experienced with the titanium iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro when running processor-intensive apps. As touched on briefly in our iPhone 17 Pro Max review, this feature dissipates heat that could affect performance and greatly reduces the need for thermal throttling under heavy processing loads. Given that the iPad Pro these days features a desktop-class processor and is targeted at creative pros multitasking and running extremely demanding software, Gurman points out that the vapor chamber would make even more sense on Apple’s pro tablet. Sure enough, he reports, Apple is working on making this a reality. “Apple is now working on the feature,” he writes, “with plans to integrate it as soon as the next round of updates.” Based on the current 18-month cycle, Gurman adds, this is likely to happen in spring 2027.
