Best laptop stands for Apple MacBook Pro and MacBook Air 2026 Macworld
Appleās MacBooks are great, butāas with all laptopsāusing one isnāt that great for your back or neck.
Continual bowing of the head to see a screen can lead to a stiff neck and what doctors scarily call spinal stenosis, which can compress blood vessels and displace nervesācutting off blood supply to the brain. Thatās not a good thing.
Your screen should be at a comfortable height that doesnāt make you bend your neck down to see it. Try to make sure your eyes are in line with the screen while sitting with a straight back. This also helps when making video calls, so the other people arenāt staring up your nostrils.
Using a laptop stand also makes using a separate keyboard and mouse much easier. See our roundups of the best Mac keyboards and best Mac mouse. And, after use, you can hide away your keyboard under the raised stand on certain models.
Some stands raise the laptop to eye level, and othersāknown as āverticalā or āclosedā standsājust keep the MacBook closed for minimal desk disruption if you have connected external displays to increase your screen sizeālearn how to set up a second screen for a Mac.
The eye-level, open laptop stands are more ergonomic, raising the MacBook screen so that you are not straining your neck muscles, shoulders and back. It should also reduce screen glare, which means less eye strain and fewer headaches. On such a stand, the MacBookās webcam will also be at a more natural level with your head, meaning less video calls with people looking up your nose or down on your head.
Buy a vertical/closed laptop stand to keep your desk tidy and free up space for other stuffābe that a charger for your iPhone, backup hard disk, or a cup of coffee.
Both types of stand should also raise the laptop, raising it off the desk and keeping it cooler. If a laptop gets too hot, its performance is likely to suffer.
A laptop stand also works nicely with a MacBook docking station, which can multiply the number of ports and slots available to you and allow for multiple larger displays. Some stands even have their own integrated USB-C hub, which is a very clever addition.
Weāve rounded up the best laptop stands for MacBook that we can find, each with its own special features. Most mimic the clean metal lines of the MacBook range, while others think differently.

Many laptop stands are rigid and offers little flexibility. The Cuve Flex, from premium accessory maker Twelve South, remedies this limitation with both height and tilt adjustability.
It can elevate your MacBook screen and camera up to 22 inches (56cm) so it can be close to eye level and aligned with an external screen if you have one. This flexibility is better for your neck, back and eyes. You can angle the MacBookās keyboard from 0 to 45 degrees.
The Curve Flex is not just flexible; itās portable, too. It weighs 28oz (795g), folds flat and comes with a padded neoprene travel sleeve.
While it costs more than the original fixed-position Curve and even cheaper Curve SE (reviewed below), and indeed many of the MacBook stands tested here, the flexibility and portability justify the extra expense.
The Curve Flex is available in matte black or white.
Twelve South also has a companion stand for the external display you might connect to your MacBook. The Curve Riser will put your second screen at a similar height to the laptop, and includes a handy shelf for a docking station or other device.

Please, John Ternus, bring back the Mac event Macworld
Hereās something that my editor pointed out to me the other day: The last time Apple held a Mac-specific event was in October 2023. At first, I was like, nah, thatās not right. But when I checked, it turns out that Apple hasnāt made any Mac announcements at a keynote since that Scary Fast event. At most, a recap of recent Mac releases was briefly mentioned, and thatās it.
As a Mac guy, I accepted that the Mac became a lower priority for Apple, for a good reason: The iPhone is so prominent, it just has to be that way. And the Mac is into its fourth decade as a platform. Itās mature, itās stable, it will always be here. It kind of takes care of itself.
But, again, Iām a Mac guy, so Iād like to see Mac marketing events for the general public again. It doesnāt have to be every year, but we should not go nearly three years without one. And no, the Apple Experience event for the MacBook Neo doesnāt count. That was an invite-only event. There was no presentation to the general public, except for a press release and YouTube videos. And if thereās any Mac release in the last two years that called for a keynote, itās the Neo.
If youāre rolling your eyes, exasperated at what you think is a trivial request, I can see that. But you probably never watched Steve Jobs introduce the first Mac, or you never watched the introduction of the first iMac. These are iconic keynotes not just for the products they unveiled, but because they did more than introduce new computers to buy. Mac events, even the Scary Fast event from 2023, are a love letter to die-hard users. (Side note: Who was the last presenter at that event? New CEO John Ternus.)
The Scary Fast October 2023 event was a Mac showcaseāthe last one Apple has done.Apple
For a lot of us, the Mac has nostalgic value. The Mac says something about how we prefer to work, how we get things done. The Mac has a greater sense of community than any other Apple product, including the iPhone. A Mac event that celebrates that community and its users reminds everyone that the Mac is where it all started, and itās the basis of everything that has come since.
Just take a look at the reaction to the MacBook Neo. The amazement about the combination of price and quality has led to an infusion of excitement in the Mac community. But more importantly, it has led to those curious about the Mac to reach out, and what they are finding is a community that is happy to engage, willing to teach, and enthusiastic about sharing.
Appleās new CEO, who just so happens to be a Mac guy. I, like many others, am very optimistic about John Ternusā ability to lead Apple. His decisions over the next few years, more so than any other time in recent history, are critical to Apple. Weāre in a time in technology where companies need to move in certain directions to thrive, much less stay relevant.
While Ternus has a lot of hard work ahead of him, reviving Mac presentation events is low-hanging fruit that would accomplish a lot. It would convey that the Mac is a top priority with Apple, and it would reinforce the bonds that make the Mac community. If the MacBook Neo tells us anything, that community is growing. Nurture that growth with Mac showcases.

20th Anniversary iPhone's 'Liquid Glass' Display to Make Bezels Vanish Apple's 20th-anniversary iPhone will use a new type of curved screen technology that more effectively hides the display bezels from the user's line of sight for a purer viewing experience, claims a Chinese leaker.
Apple is reportedly planning a radical redesign for the 20th-anniversary iPhone that could feature a display that curves around all four edges of the device. To achieve this, Apple will reportedly use an equal-depth quad-curved panel supplied by Samsung, and it sounds like it's going to be quite different from typical curved screens.
According to leaker Ice Universe, "It is not a traditional quad curved display, nor is it anything like the curved screen solutions we have seen on Android phones over the years." This is said to be down to its extremely subtle curvature, but there are apparently other factors that could come into play.
"What truly creates the visual impact may be a sophisticated combination of optical refraction, light guiding structures, and carefully engineered visual illusion," said Ice Universe, writing in a post on X. "The end result could be a display where the bezel nearly disappears from sight, while edge viewing remains natural and undisturbed."Apple will also reportedly adopt a Samsung-made OLED technology called COE (Color Filter on Encapsulation) to make the 20th-anniversary iPhone's display brighter and thinner than previous panels. Apple may refer to it as a "Liquid Glass Display," in a nod to its latest software interface redesign, claims the leaker.
Apple may define its next generation display as "Liquid Glass Display."It is not a traditional quad curved display, nor is it anything like the curved screen solutions we have seen on Android phones over the years. The curvature itself could be extremely subtle. What truly... pic.twitter.com/onj81yNWQfā Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) April 27, 2026
To mark the 20th-anniversary of the iPhone in 2027, Apple ideally wants an uninterrupted display with no cutouts for the most visual impact, but concealing the Face ID system and selfie camera under the panel is going to be a challenge.
Display analyst Ross Young has said that Apple won't have under-display āFace IDā ready to go for a 2027 iPhone, but other leakers think it's possible. If Apple can't get everything under the display, we may see under-display āFace IDā and then a small hole-punch cutout on the front for the front-facing camera.Tags: 20th-Anniversary iPhone, Ice UniverseThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Apple is doomed because John Ternus isnāt Elon Musk Macworld
It is more than a week since Apple announced that Tim Cook would be transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman and John Ternus would be taking over as CEO, so if you think the Macalope has a āTernusā-based pun to start this weekās column that hasnāt already been used, well, sorry, that well has been tapped bone dry.
As a mythical beast who has had to endure years of Apple doomerism, it is interesting how decidedly calm everyone is about this impending transition. Sure, a few have said Ternus will have to hit the ground running on AI to overcome a perceived failure on Tim Cookās part to dump billions into it, but for the most part, everyone has been remarkably chill, which has never been a word the Macalope would use to describe our esteemed corps of technology pundits. We are, therefore, left with only one logical conclusion: they have all been replaced by unfeeling, silicon-based lifeforms from the 8th dimension.
Which⦠eh, okay.
Even the concern over AI seems pretty unwarranted to the Macalope, though. Why? Hereās why: āOpenAI could be making a phone with AI agents replacing apps.ā
First of all, good luck with that. It should go about as well as other new phones that have been announced in recent years. Second, the reason OpenAI is taking this move is that it has to: AI is a service that needs to be delivered on a platform, and if you donāt own the platform, someone else is your gatekeeper. They will try pins, they will try glasses, they will try phones, they will try whatever hardware they can think of, but at the end of the day, they have to beat the iPhone.
Which is why the Macalope says good luck.
But there are a few reasons there has been no rending of garments over this changing of the guard. Probably the biggest one is that Tim Cook isnāt leaving the company. If Ternus needs to ask him a question like āHow do I get Eddy Cue to dial it back a bit?ā, he can just walk into his office.
Apple also did an excellent job greasing the skids on this transition. Of course, Tim Cook has reached an age where itās natural to wonder if heād consider stepping down, but itās not just because of that that weāve been talking about this eventuality and John Ternus as his likely replacement for more than a year now. We can argue over who got it wrong and who got it right in terms of reporting this impending change, but the one who really got it right was Apple, which leaked just enough, got Ternus in front of the press just enough, and delivered the news at just the right time.
If youād like to receive regular news and updates to your inbox, sign up forĀ our newsletters, including The Macalope and Apple Breakfast, David Priceās weekly, bite-sized roundup of all the latest Apple news and rumors.Foundry
Finally, it cannot be stressed enough how important it is that Ternus is coming from inside Apple and from a product development discipline, no less. While the Macalope has been extremely critical of some of Cookās decisions in the last, oh, 16 months or so (totally random timespan not at all linked to any national events), he is by and large a really tough act to follow. The fantastic growth Apple has experienced over the last 15 years, thanks to the ability to follow up on the single biggest consumer product in the history of capitalismāthe iPhoneāis no mean feat.
(You have to caveat it with āin the history of capitalismā because fire was just slightly more popular on a percentage basis.)
The one knock people have had on Cook over the years? āHeās not a product guy.ā Ternus is. That knock was nonsense, of course, and it reached its fever peak when it was made into weapons-grade nonsense with one suggestion in particular. Please swallow any liquids in your mouth before you read the following suggestion, made back in 2017:
āWhy Apple Should Buy Tesla and Make Elon Musk CEOā
Can? You? Even? Effing? Imagine?
The Macalope has revisited this piece several times in the intervening years as Muskās⦠[audible gulp]⦠unique personality⦠was put more and more on display and found to be severely lacking, and each time he reads the title, it makes certain parts of him clench ever tighter. Of course, no one was taking this seriously then, even the author. It was just another way to lob cheap shots at Tim Cook.
Ternus is starting with a company still largely at the top of its game (government relations and macOS Tahoe notwithstanding) and a tremendous amount of goodwill. One could worry that thereās nowhere to go but down, but the Macalope is excited to see what results from this remarkable⦠Ternus events.
Somebody probably already used that.

Notepad++ Finally Lands On macOS as a Native App BrianFagioli writes: Notepad++ has finally made its way to macOS, and this time it is not through a compatibility layer. A new community-driven port brings the long-standing Windows text editor over as a fully native Mac application, built with Cocoa and compiled for both Apple Silicon and Intel systems. Instead of relying on Wine or similar tools, the project replaces the Windows-specific interface with a macOS-native one while keeping the core editing engine intact, allowing longtime users to retain the same workflow, shortcuts, and overall feel.
The port is independent from the original Notepad++ project but tracks upstream changes closely, with development happening in the open. It is code-signed and notarized, and notably avoids telemetry or ads. Plugin support is being rebuilt for macOS and is still evolving, but the groundwork is in place. While macOS already has several established editors, this effort is aimed squarely at users who want the familiar Notepad++ experience without relearning a new tool. You can download the app here.

MagSafe Monday: Scoscheās 2-in-1 Qi2 mount is the perfect car companion for summer travel When you are looking for a MagSafe car mount, you usually have to make a hard choice right at the start of your shopping decisions. Do you want a vent mount or a dashboard mount? Vent mounts are great because they are easy to move between cars and avoid the need for adhesives on your carās dash, but they can sometimes block your airflow. Dashboard mounts offer a more permanent feel but can be harder to get right.
Scosche decided to skip that debate entirely with the Scosche MagicMount Charge Pro, which includes both options in the box. I prefer the vent mount because I love helping keep my iPhone cool on summer trips, where it can overheat by letting my AC keep it cool while itās keeping my car cold.

Apple Introduces App Store Monthly Subscriptions With 12-Month Commitment Apple today announced the launch of a new subscription option for App Store developers: monthly subscriptions with a 12-month commitment. The new option allows developers to offer subscribers discounted pricing typically associated with an annual subscription but paid on a monthly basis to keep payments more affordable.
This new payment option allows you to offer subscribers more affordable options. People can cancel their subscription at any time, which will prevent the subscription from renewing after they've completed their agreed-to payments to fulfill their commitment.Apple says that the new feature provides transparency to users by allowing them to easily view the number of completed and remaining payments they've made toward their annual commitment. Apple will also send email and optional push notifications ahead of renewals.
Developers can begin creating these new subscription types in āApp Storeā Connect and testing them in Xcode starting today, and they will go live to users on iOS 26.4 and equivalent versions for other platforms next month alongside the launch of iOS 26.5 and related updates.

Spotify Launches Fitness Hub With 1,400+ Peloton Workouts Spotify today launched a new Fitness hub, bringing over 1,400 on-demand Peloton workout classes to Premium subscribers alongside a range of free content from independent wellness creators.
The Peloton classes span strength, cardio, yoga, pilates, barre, meditation, stretching, and outdoor run and walk, and require no specialist equipment. Peloton's bike workouts are not included. The catalog is available in the U.S., UK, Australia, Germany, Austria, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, and Spain, with Spotify saying it will expand to more countries over time.
Both free and Premium subscribers can access curated playlists and content from a range of established wellness creators, including Yoga With Kassandra, Caitlin K'eli Yoga, Sweaty Studio, Chloe Ting, Pilates Body by Raven, Abi Mills Wellness, and Sophiereidfit. The Peloton partnership content, featuring instructors such as Rebecca Kennedy, Ally Love, and Rad Lopez, is available to Premium subscribers only, ad-free.
The Fitness hub includes an onboarding questionnaire that asks users what type of movement they want, how hard they want to push, and their experience level, then generates a personalized starter pack. Classes are primarily in English, with select options in Spanish and German. Offline downloads are supported, and users can switch between watching a class on TV and listening on a phone or smart speaker in audio-only mode.
Nearly 70% of Premium subscribers apparently work out monthly, and there are more than 150 million fitness playlists active on the platform. Fitness and workout content also ranks among the top use cases for the company's recently launched AI-powered Prompted Playlist feature.
The Fitness hub is accessible by searching "fitness" in the Spotify app's Search tab, or via the "Browse all" menu.Tags: Peloton, SpotifyThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Appleās next innovation might be a āLiquid Glassā iPhone Macworld
One of the more divisive elements of last yearās raft of Apple OS updates was the new Liquid Glass interface design. This shimmery aesthetic was supposed to bring cohesion across the iPhone, Mac, Vision Pro, and other Apple products, but ended up causing legibility issues and a certain amount of irritation. Happily, however, it appears the company does not think Liquid Glass as a brand is beyond redemption.
According to a Twitter/X post by the prolific leaker Ice Universe, Apple is working on a next-gen iPhone display that will use the same Liquid Glass branding as the software it runs. In a first for the companyās smartphone line, this display will be curved, but Ice stresses that the curvature will be āextremely subtle,ā unlike the curved screens weāve seen on Android phones over the years.
āWhat truly creates the visual impact may be a sophisticated combination of optical refraction, light guiding structures, and carefully engineered visual illusion,ā the leaker explains. āThe end result could be a display where the bezel nearly disappears from sight, while edge viewing remains natural and undisturbed.ā
From the wording of the post (āmay,ā ācould,ā and so on) itās apparent that this is a theory rather than a definite plan. Ice Universe also doesnāt cite any sources or otherwise specify where the information comes from. So at this point itās best to regard this as speculation: a product concept which Apple is plausibly exploring, but isnāt close to launching, nor guaranteed to get there at all.
The timeframe isnāt clear from the post either. Ice refers to it as Appleās ānext-generation display,ā but itās almost certainly destined for Appleās 20th anniversary iPhone due to arrive in 2027. We already know the big design change for late 2026, and thatās the folding body of the iPhone Ultra, while the iPhone 18 Pro is likely to be far more iterative upgrades on their respective predecessors. However, itās been heavily rumored that Apple is planning to launch an iPhone with ācurved glass edges all aroundā to mark itās 20th anniversary.
As Ice Universe acknowledges, curved phone displays have been around for a while; the first commercially available Android device to offer this was the Samsung Galaxy Round way back in 2013. (The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, pictured above, came out in 2023.) Apple has even done curved displays itself: Apple Watches have screens that curve down subtly at the edges in order to disguise the bezel.
It will therefore be interesting to see how Apple presents it as a new breakthrough, if it does so at all. Perhaps the company will focus, as it does so often, on the experience rather than the details. Its upcoming iPhone Ultra, for example, is not even close to being the first folding smartphone, but will surely be presented as the first to do it right. Expect a similar approach with the Liquid Glass display.

Apple Hit With Unfair Labor Practice Charge for Refusing to Transfer Unionized Towson Workers The IAM Union representing Apple employees in Towson, Maryland today said that it is filing an Unfair Labor Practice charge [PDF] against Apple with the National Labor Relations Board. The union is accusing Apple of unlawful discrimination against unionized workers.
Earlier this month, Apple announced plans to close the Towson Apple Store alongside two other Apple locations in Connecticut and California. The Towson store was the first Apple retail location to unionize in the U.S. back in 2022.
With most store closures, employees are relocated automatically to nearby stores, but Apple said the union rules at the Towson location prevented it from moving the workers to other stores. Apple instead said that Towson employees are "eligible to apply for open roles at Apple in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement."
The IAM Union said at the time that it was "outraged" by Apple's decision, and that there was nothing in the agreement that prevented employees from being relocated. IAM said Apple's claim was false, and that it raised "serious concerns" that the closure was a "cynical attempt to bust the union."
In today's filing, the IAM Union complained that Apple allowed employees at two non-union stores to transfer to other locations, but forced Towson employees to reapply for positions through the same process as external candidates.
"This is about whether workers are treated fairly under the law or punished for exercising their rights," said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. "Apple is denying union-represented workers the same opportunities it is giving to others -- and doing so because these workers chose to organize. That is discrimination, and it is exactly what federal labor law is designed to prevent."
The union has asked Apple to reverse its decision and give Towson workers the same opportunity to transfer to other retail locations.
The three stores that Apple is closing are located in struggling shopping malls that are slowly shutting down and losing foot traffic.Tag: Apple StoreThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

MacBook Neo Still Seeing Extended Delivery Estimates at Apple, But Amazon and Walmart Have Stock Apple's MacBook Neo has recently been struck by delayed delivery estimates on Apple.com, due to the notebook's booming popularity. However, both Walmart and Amazon offer deliveries as soon as tomorrow, and even feature small discounts on the Neo.
Following its launch in March, the āMacBook Neoā has become a big hit for Apple, with the company struggling to keep the computer in stock online and in Apple stores. As of writing, Apple.com quotes a 2-3 week delivery estimate on every model of the Neo in the U.S. and many other countries.
If you want to prioritize saving a bit of money, Amazon has every model of the MacBook Neo for $9 off this week. Free delivery options place the Neo arriving as soon as May 2, while Prime members can get same-day shipping on the 256GB models in many locations.
Over at Walmart, you won't find any discounts, but you will find similarly quick delivery estimates. Select locations should see delivery estimates as soon as April 28 through April 29 on every model of the āMacBook Neoā. If you have Walmart+ instead of Amazon Prime, this could be a better option despite the lack of a straight cash discount.
The āMacBook Neoā is Apple's low-cost Mac, priced at $599 for the 256GB model and $699 for the 512GB model with Touch ID. Students can get the computer for even cheaper at $499 through Apple's education store on its website.
If you're shopping for the new M5 MacBook Air, Amazon is currently hosting big $150 discounts on nearly every model. Prices now start at $949.99 for the 512GB 13-inch model.

Apple Planning to Launch Two New 'Ultra' Products in the Next Year Apple has decided to market two of its new products over the next year as "Ultra" devices, Macworld reports.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report claims that Apple's first foldable iPhone will be called the "iPhone Ultra." The device will become the highest end option in the lineup.
The āiPhone Ultraā will not be considered part of the iPhone 18 iPhone lineup, despite arriving alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and āiPhone 18 Proā Max. This would be just like how the iPhone Air is not considered to be part of the iPhone 17 series. Although Apple is hoping to ship the āiPhone Ultraā alongside the āiPhone 18 Proā, it may launch a few weeks later and with scarcer availability.
Moreover, Apple is apparently planning to release a "MacBook Ultra" later this year or in early 2027. It will feature an OLED panel and a touchscreen, sitting above the MacBook Pro in the lineup at a "significantly" higher price point. While the device was originally intended to launch later this year, it is now likely pushed back by several months due to memory supply chain shortages.
Apple already offers M-series Ultra chips, the Apple Watch Ultra, and CarPlay Ultra. "Ultra" branding for the foldable iPhone and OLED MacBook was previously rumored by Bloomberg, which added that "AirPods Ultra" could also be on the way.Related Roundups: iPhone Fold, MacBook ProTags: iPhone Ultra, MacBook Ultra, MacworldBuyer's Guide: MacBook Pro (Buy Now)Related Forum: MacBook ProThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

OpenAI Reportedly Working on an AI Smartphone to Rival iPhone OpenAI is working on a smartphone in what appears to be a significant reversal from previous reports that the company had no plans to enter the phone market, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Kuo shared the findings from his latest supply chain checks in a post on X, saying MediaTek and Qualcomm are the chosen chip partners and Luxshare Precision Industry is the exclusive manufacturing partner, with mass production scheduled for 2028. Exact chip specifications and additional suppliers are expected to be finalized by late 2026 or the first quarter of 2027.
Kuo argues that the smartphone remains uniquely positioned for AI agent use because it is the only device that captures a user's full real-time state, including location, activity, communication, and context, which he describes as the most important input for real-time AI agent inference. He claims that AI agents will fundamentally change how people interact with a phone, shifting the focus from launching individual apps to completing tasks through a more continuous, context-aware interface.
He argues that fully controlling both the operating system and the hardware is the only way for the company to deliver a comprehensive AI agent service, and that a subscription-bundled business model could enable OpenAI to build a developer ecosystem around those agents.
Kuo suggests that Luxshare, which has long sought to reduce its dependence on Apple supply chain work, could benefit substantially from an early position in what he frames as the next generation of smartphone hardware.
The development represents a notable reversal in OpenAI's publicly stated hardware strategy. Previous reports have consistently described the company's hardware ambitions as centered on non-phone form factors developed in collaboration with Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief whose startup io Products was acquired by OpenAI for $6.5 billion. Those plans include a smart speaker, which is likely the first product to launch, along with smart glasses, a smart lamp, and potentially earbuds. OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane has said the first hardware announcement is expected in the second half of 2026, with launch around early 2027.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X the same day Kuo published his analysis, writing that it "feels like a good time to seriously rethink how operating systems and user interfaces are designed." Such a device would obviously put OpenAI in direct competition with Apple's iPhone.Tags: Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAIThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Appleās new CEO designed a āwackyā folding iPad, but we might never get it Macworld
According to a new report, Apple intends to position its incoming CEO as the āfaceā of the burgeoning foldables market. But that market may not include a foldable iPad, even though that product has been one of his pet projects.
In a dramatic announcement last week, Apple revealed that John Ternus will take over as CEO on September 1, while current boss Tim Cook will simultaneously become chairman of the board. That transition has been years in the planning, and the date was chosen carefully, as Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman explains in the most recent instalment of his Power On newsletter.
Apple wants its new CEO to hit the ground running, and a start date of September 1 is perfectly calculated to achieve that. It means Ternusās first quarter as boss will include the financially lucrative holiday period, but more importantly, it means he can take the stage at the yearly iPhone release a week or two after starting the job and stamp his mark on proceedings in front of the worldās media. The flagship reveal this September will be Appleās first folding phone, expected to be called the iPhone Ultra, and Apple wants Ternus to be associated with that product and that market, from the very beginning.
āAs part of Appleās planning for the transition from Cook to Ternus,ā Gurman reports, āthe company wanted its new leader to be the one hosting the event to unveil the deviceāsetting him up to become the face of what it believes will be a blockbuster new product category.ā
This isnāt as tenuous as it might sound, with the new guy being parachuted in at the last minute to take credit for a project years in the making. On the contrary, Ternus (currently in charge of all hardware engineering at the company) has reportedly been involved with the iPhone Ultra from the start, and Apple intends to make the most of that experience. āThe idea that Ternus drove this whole process will be put front and center during the launch period,ā says Gurman, who expects the new CEO to be positioned as āthe face of the new era.ā
The new era of foldables could be an exciting one for Apple, but for the time being, it looks set to be confined to the world of smartphones. Apple has other foldable products in the pipeline, but whether or not they will ever ship remains in doubt. The giant folding iPad, for example, has reportedly been a āpriorityā for Ternus in his current role, but being the new bossās pet project gives it no guarantee of making it to market.
So far from launch is the folding iPad, in fact, that Gurman says it āmay end up being a wacky experiment that doesnāt see the light of day.ā He cites the testimony of multiple anonymous sources who have worked not merely at Apple but on that exact product.
Gurman and his disillusioned sources do not offer any rationale for the giant folding iPadās dubious prospects or why such a product would ever be commercially viable. However, itās easy to see why a giany iPad might not be a hit. Appleās best-selling iPads are the ones that are a) as cheap as possible, and b) roughly 11 inches from corner to corner. The vast majority of iPad users simply want something simple and instant-booting to use when viewing YouTube videos or answering emails on the couch, and have little need for the latest hardware or the budget to pay for it.
The iPad Pro has shown that there is a market for premium and larger tablets, but it remains a small one, and a 20-inch folding iPad would surely cost at least twice as much as even the largest iPad Pro⦠already a premium niche product. A foldable iPad would be glorious to use, folding down to the size of a normal iPad to fit in a bag, and then expanding to the size of a large laptop for watching movies, but it doesnāt seem like a product that would find a large enough audience. Although perhaps John Ternus, in his new role as the face of foldables, will be able to persuade us all of its advantages.
New Apple CEO Ternusā first act: Introduce the first foldable iPhone Appleās new CEO, John Ternus, officially takes the helm on September 1. Less than two weeks later, he is set to unveil what is expectedā¦
