This guy turned his old MacBook into a trash can, and it can be yours for just $450 Macworld
Facebook Marketplace has a reputation for having some weird stuff. Take, for instance, this trash can for sale by Brandon Nielsen. It’s not just any old trash can–it features a MacBook as its lid. Open the can by lifting the MacBook lid, and you’ll find a wide opening where the keyboard and trackpad used to be. Dump your trash, close the MacBook lid, and you don’t have to worry about the garbage stinking up the joint.
So, the first question you have (or I have), is, why? “Just thought people didn’t want to stare at trash cans in nice areas,” according to Nielsen in the product description. Well, Nielsen certainly accomplished that–with the MacBook closed, it looks simply like a laptop sitting on a nicely-crafted stand.
Brandon Nielsen/Facebook
If you’re interested in the MacBook trash can, it can be yours for $450 (cash only). Also, you’ll need to make delivery arrangements–Nielsen is located in Scottsdale, Arizona. If you’re really interested, Nielsen apparently has a bunch of old MacBooks lying around, because he “can make more.”
In other Mac trash news, Bewareweegee posted on Reddit about an old, working Core 2 Duo iMac that was actually found in a trash can. Come to think of it, that iMac body could make for a pretty cool trash can lid. Hey Brandon, I’ve got an idea for you…

The iPad mini 7 isn’t the most powerful tablet Apple makes by any means, but it’s the one that is the most inviting and the one my family and I gravitate to the most. And while my iPad Pro is my main computer and I love everything it does, I would have to say that the iPad mini is Apple’s most versatile and purest form of iPad.

Photoshop Elements is a photo editing software with a user-friendly interface designed for casual users and amateur photographers. It offers a range of powerful tools, including advanced features that use artificial intelligence to simplify editing tasks, without the complexity of the professional Photoshop version.
While it isn’t the cheapest photo-editing program available for Mac users, it’s long been one of the most popular thanks to its combination of powerful editing tools – based, of course, on the professional, high-end version of Photoshop – and a well designed interface that makes it easy for beginners to achieve impressive results.
The update for 2026 isn’t a massive upgrade but – inevitably – it includes a number of new features that use AI to speed up the editing process, as did the update for 2025. However, the changes to Adobe’s pricing that came with the 2025 update might not appeal to everyone. We’ll run through the changes for 2026 below before discussing some of the best features of Photoshop Elements.
Photoshop Elements – What is new for 2026?
It won’t come as any surprise that the 2026 update for Photoshop Elements – released in October 2025 – leans heavily into AI. In fact, you no longer even have to bother taking photos of your own as the program now uses Adobe’s Firefly technology to provide generative AI features that can create entirely new photos and artwork for you.
To create a new image you first need to create a blank document of the required size – a detail that isn’t clearly explained in the program’s Help files (Adobe needs to tidy up its documentation for new users who may not be familiar with Photoshop Elements). Once that’s done you can simply click on the new Generate Image tool in the program’s main toolbar, which activates a series of options that are displayed at the bottom of the screen.
There’s a text box where you can type a prompt – such as ‘Zebra running down the road’ – and you can either choose to create a photo-realistic image, or a more stylised image that looks like hand-drawn artwork. Then you simply click the Generate button and let Photoshop Elements create your desired image, along with four variations that you can choose from.
Get some AI help creating images.Foundry
You can also use generative AI to add new elements to existing photos, using the new Insert Object tool. This activates a brush tool that allows you to mark an area on your photo where you want to add a new object, and then you type in another prompt to describe the object that you want – such as ‘flying banana’. It’s a lot of fun to experiment with – but there’s a sting in the tail, as these generative AI features are not completely free to use.
Photoshop Elements does give you 25 ‘generative credits’ per month for free, but after that you need to pay for a Firefly subscription, which starts at $9.99/£9.98 per month for 2,000 credits. It’s annoying, though, that this cost isn’t clearly highlighted when you’re using the generative AI tools in Photoshop Elements, with only a Learn More entry for generative credits tucked away within the program’s Help menu.
Fortunately, Photoshop Elements 26 doesn’t just focus on fancy AI features. It also provides some more down-to-earth tools that will help new users and speed up routine editing tasks. The program has used AI – that doesn’t require you to buy extra credits – to update tools such as Restore Photo, which can be used to remove scratches and marks of wear and tear from old scanned photos.
The Remove tool (introduced in the 2025 update) has been updated, making it easier to remove people or other objects from the background of a photo. The option to remove the entire background of a photo has also been improved, working automatically so that you don’t have to spend so much time painting around the main subject in the foreground of the image before removing the background.
The Crop tool has been modified so that it’s easier to select the part of an image that you want to remove or keep, and even the program’s Tool Tips have been updated, providing additional information about each tool when you hover the mouse over the toolbar.
There have been changes to the pricing structure as well, as is often the case when the software is updated. See the pricing section below for more information.
Photoshop Elements – What was new in 2025?
There weren’t a large number of new features in the 2025 edition of Photoshop Elements, that arrived in late 2024, but Adobe did add a number of AI features that quickly perform some very complex tasks.
The Remove tool that can remove people or objects from a photo arrived with the 2025 update. The AI-powered Remove tool works really well, even with photos that include several people standing in front of complex, multi-coloured backgrounds.
Remove people from your photos.
Taking this approach further, the new Guided Edit called Combine Photos allows you to select the foreground subject from one photo and the background from another photo and combine them to create a new image. This was a little more complicated to use, though, and I sometimes found myself selecting the background or foreground subject from the wrong photo, so a little more clarity in the instructions wouldn’t go amiss.
More straightforward are the new AI features in the Quick Action menu within Quick mode. These can provide motion effects, such as zooming the camera in or out, or panning from side to side, and then allow you to export the animated image as an MP4 video file. There are pulsing hearts to declare your love for someone on TikTok, as well as animated frames and particle effects to liven up your posts.
So while this wasn’t a major upgrade there are key features, such as the new Remove tool, which make the program more powerful than ever before.
Our top Photoshop Elements features
Here are a few of our favourite feature that have appeared in Photoshop Elements over the years.
Editing Modes
A key element, so to speak, of Photoshop Elements is that it provides three different editing modes, which are suitable for users with different levels of experience. At the top of the program’s main editing window there are three tabs – Quick, Guided and Advanced – which provide different sets of tools.
If you’re a beginner, or you just want to perform some quick edits to tidy up a photo, then you can click the Quick tab. This takes you into a simple workspace with a basic set of tools for common editing tasks, such as cropping an image, correcting red-eye, or adding text.
There’s also a Quick Actions panel on the right of the window that provides a series of one-click tools that can instantly perform more complex tasks, including color correction, adjusting exposure, or even removing the entire background from a photo. Most of these are one-click tools that work automatically, but there are also simple slider controls that provide more precise control over lighting, color and other settings.
More experienced users who really want to edit their photos in fine detail can select the Advanced tab instead, which opens up the program’s entire array of advanced editing. As well as providing a vast library of filters and effects that can alter the appearance of the entire photo, Advanced mode also includes precise tools for editing and manipulating individual pixels within the image, and using layers to combine multiple effects and objects within a single image.
It’s a bit of a leap, though, to go from Quick mode to Advanced mode, so Photoshop Elements also includes a Guided mode, which includes a series of Guided Edits that provide step-by-step help so that less experienced users can learn how to use some of the program’s more advanced tools. These include Guided Edits for adding text and other effects, creating panoramic photos, or using pan and zoom effects to make your photos look more dynamic.
Sensei / AI
Adobe’s 2022 version introduced new artificial intelligence techniques – which Adobe refers to as Sensei – which could automatically perform editing tasks that might normally require hours of work.
The app has always had a selection of filter effects that could make photos look like paintings, using media such as oil paints or watercolors, but Sensei introduced a new set of Artistic effects that aim to mimic a variety of popular artistic styles, such as cubist and post-impressionist. These aren’t always entirely successful – I suspect Vincent Van Gogh is spinning in his grave right now – but they’re fun to experiment with. One nice touch here is that you can apply the artistic effect to the entire photo, or just to the subject or background, which is a nice way of emphasizing particular aspects of a photo. If your artistic ambitions are a little more modest you can apply some simple animated effects – known as Overlays – such as falling snowflakes or flickering flames, to your photos and then save your work as a short video clip that you can upload to social media.
The use of Sensei artificial intelligence continued with Photoshop Elements 2023. As well as applying animated overlays to an entire photo, this feature allows you to create moving elements that animate just one specific section within a photo. You could select part of an image, such as a waterfall or the flowing mane of a horse, and animate your selection to make the image look more dynamic and eye-catching. The program’s selection tools can help you to select either the background of an image, or elements in the foreground, and you can simply draw a line to indicate the direction of movement (so the waterfall flows down, rather than upwards). You can also adjust settings such as the speed of movement, and preview the animation effect before exporting the animated image file as an MP4 video clip or as an animated-GIF.
Guided Edits
One of the things that sets Photoshop Elements apart from many of its rivals is its use of Guided Edits, which give you step-by-step help in using some of the app’s most powerful tools. One really powerful Guided Edit that was introduced in 2021’s update is the ability to alter the aspect ratio of a photo by extending the background of a photo. If you’ve got a photo with an attractive background, such as a beach or some leafy trees then you can clone part of the background and use it to extend the background further – perhaps to turn a square photo into a wider landscape shot, or to extend a sunny blue sky upwards for an upright portrait shot that you can use on social media.
And, of course, no social media account is complete without some cute pet pics, so Photoshop Elements includes a Guided Edit specifically for enhancing photos of animals. You can adjust the lighting and color in a photo, focusing either on your pet or the background, or add a subtle vignette effect. There’s also an option to remove blemishes, such as mud or dirt, and to remove glare from the pet’s eyes.
The Guided Edits section of the program also gained new tools for adding overlays, new background images, or enhancing the appearance of the sky in your photos. And, with so many Guided Edits now available, we were pleased to see that this update added a new Search tool that helps you to quickly locate the Guided Edits you need by searching for keywords such as ‘crop’ or ‘sky’.
In the 2024 edition, a new Guided Edit called Add Text, made it easier to use the program’s text tools and effects. You can quickly add horizontal or vertical text, apply text to a selection, or make text follow a path that you draw with a freehand pen. You can add drop shadows, graduated colours and other effects with a quick click of your mouse, and even change the angle of lighting that you apply to the text. And, for social media mavens, there’s a new Photo Reels tool, which is similar to an old-fashioned slide-show that flicks through a series of photos, but is very much focused on social media and provides a series of templates for use on Instagram, Tiktok and other services. When you create a Photo Reel you see a simple timeline view that allows you to arrange photos in sequence, adjust the size and aspect ratio of each photo. You can also adjust the playback speed of the photo reel, and add text, graphics and filter effects.
Foundry
Quick Actions
Quick Actions panel is available within the program’s Quick editing mode. The Quick Actions panel gathers together a number of existing editing tools, but also gains new AI features, such as the ability to quickly select or change the background or sky in an image, or to smooth out fuzzy artefacts in compressed JPG files.

How much does Photoshop Elements cost?
Most of Adobe’s Creative Cloud apps, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, are aimed at professional users and require a monthly or annual subscription. However, Photoshop Elements is aimed at hobbyists and casual users, so it has traditionally been available for a one-time fee of $99.99/£86.99.
That price didn’t change with the 2025 edition, but instead of paying a one-time fee that lets you use the program for as long as you want, Adobe now grants you a ‘three-year term license’ instead. In effect, you’re paying for a three-year subscription, which sounds a little disappointing at first. However, it does mean that you should get the next three updates free of charge, which is still pretty good value for money when spread over three years.
If you own Photoshop Elements 2025 then your license will allow you to upgrade to this 2026 edition automatically. However, many people dislike the idea of software subscriptions – especially with hidden extras such as Adobe’s ‘generative credits’. So while Photoshop Elements remains one of the most powerful photo-editing tools for home users and hobbyists, it’s still worth considering some of the best photo-editors that offer less expensive subscriptions – or a simple one-time purchase with no subscription required at all.
Owners of previous versions can also upgrade to the 2026 edition for $79.99/£70.99, and you can also buy Photoshop Elements together with the Premiere Elements (read our review) video-editor for $149.99/£130.49 (which again is for a three-year license). Beware though, as the version that is currently on sale in the Mac App Store (at the time of writing) is still the 2025 edition from last year, so Adobe’s own website is the best place to buy at the moment. There’s a 30-day trial available so that you can experiment for a while before buying
Buying the desktop version of Photoshop Elements also gives you access to its companion mobile app for iOS and Android, and a web app that runs in a browser on any device. The mobile app allows you to upload photos and videos from your smartphone or tablet, and also provides you with 2GB of free online storage for your files. You can then quickly import these files into the desktop versions of Photoshop Elements when you’re ready to get down to some serious editing work. The web app works in a similar fashion, and also includes some simple tools for quickly creating slideshows and collages without having to use the full version of Photoshop Elements. Just remember that both the mobile and web apps are still in their beta test phase, so make sure you keep backups of your photos and files just in case.
There’s also a free seven-day trial available, so that you can download the program and try out the new features before buying.
Should you buy Photoshop Elements?
Photoshop Elements is one of the best photo-editing tools for amateur photographers and hobbyists. Its great strength is that it provides admirable ease of use for beginners, along with powerful and precise editing tools for more advanced users. The update for 2026 is not just about fancy AI features , you’ll also find down-to-earth tools and feature updates that will speed up routine editing tasks.

Apple Launched Its Big New Vision for TV 10 Years Ago Today Apple launched the Apple TV HD, the Siri Remote, tvOS, and their accompanying App Store a decade ago today, marking a major overhaul of the device.
The new vision for the Apple TV was unveiled on September 9, 2015 during Apple's "Hey Siri" event in San Francisco, where CEO Tim Cook introduced the device with the statement, "The future of TV is apps." The announcement represented a major strategic shift from previous Apple TV models, which had primarily focused on streaming iTunes and partner content. Pre-orders opened on Monday, October 26, 2015, and devices began arriving with customers and in stores on Friday, October 30, 2015.
With the new Apple TV, Apple introduced tvOS, a dedicated operating system derived from iOS 9, and opened the platform to third-party developers for the first time. Apple services chief Eddy Cue presented the new system, demonstrating a redesigned interface and an entirely new App Store built for the living room. Developers could create apps and games using Xcode 7 and the same frameworks used for iPhone and iPad, including UIKit and Metal. Cue emphasized that the unified architecture would allow iOS developers to transition easily to tvOS. The new interface introduced universal search, enabling users to query content across multiple platforms such as iTunes, Netflix, and Hulu simultaneously.
A major hardware change accompanied the software overhaul. The fourth-generation Apple TV featured the A8 processor, originally used in the iPhone 6, paired with either 32GB or 64GB of storage. The new model supported HDMI 1.4 video output at 1080p and included Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and a Lightning port for service and development. The device's design was thicker than its predecessor, allowing for active cooling and more processing power.
Apple also introduced the Siri Remote, a touch- and motion-sensitive controller with dual microphones for voice input. The top surface of the remote was made of glass, allowing users to swipe to navigate or scrub through video playback. The controller included a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, making it compatible with motion-based games. It charged via a Lightning connector and connected to the Apple TV via Bluetooth instead of infrared, enabling input without line-of-sight requirements.
During the demonstration, Apple showcased voice control capabilities integrated directly into the tvOS interface. Siri could execute commands such as "Show me new comedies," "What did she say?," or "Rewind two minutes." When asked to "show me James Bond movies,” Siri displayed results aggregated from multiple services.
Apple also positioned the device as a casual gaming platform. Independent developers such as Hipster Whale demonstrated the hit title "Crossy Road" with support for multiplayer gameplay using the Siri Remote and iPhones as secondary controllers. Other demonstrations included fitness and shopping apps.
A decade later, Apple's hopes to turn the Apple TV into a device driven by Siri, an ecosystem of third-party apps, and gaming seem to have not panned out as much as it hoped. Nevertheless, the Apple TV HD and tvOS defined how the platform looks and works to this day. A new Apple TV is rumored to launch this year, featuring a newer processor and Apple's custom N1 chip for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.Related Roundup: Apple TVBuyer's Guide: Apple TV (Don't Buy)Related Forum: Apple TV and Home TheaterThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Threads Rolling Out Two New Features in iPhone App Meta today announced it is rolling out two new Threads features that will give users more control over the visibility of content on the platform.
First, new "mentions" and "people you follow" filters in the Activity tab will allow you to fine-tune the replies that are visible in the feed.
Second, a new "review and approve replies" option when drafting a post will allow you to approve replies to your post before they are visible to the public.
The features will be available in the Threads app on iPhone, and presumably on other platforms.
Threads is a social media platform that competes with X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky and Mastodon. Meta launched Threads in 2023, less than a year after Elon Musk acquired Twitter, and it works with an Instagram account.Tags: Meta, ThreadsThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Get a pair of AirPods Pro 2 with a 365-day return policy for just $140 today Macworld
We’re used to seeing AirPods Pro 2 for $199 and even as low as $169, but we’ve never seen them this cheap. Amazon is selling a pair of Renewed Premium AirPods Pro 2 for just $140, a whopping $109 off Apple’s MSRP and a fantastic price.
Amazon says these Renewed Premium AirPods Pro 2 have been tested and are in perfect order with at least 90 percent battery health. They come with accessories equivalent to those shipping in the original box (MagSafe Charging Case with speaker and lanyard loop, silicone ear tips (four sizes: XS, S, M, L), and a USB-C to USB-C cable), and have a 365-day return policy, so you can get your money back at any time.
The 2nd-gen AirPods Pro are no longer Apple’s flagship earbuds, with the AirPods Pro 3 taking that spot, but they’re still one of our favorites. They offer exceptional audio quality and industry-leading noise cancellation, and we appreciated the earbuds enough to give them a 4.5-star rating when we reviewed them. And with the Hearing Health and Live Translation, they’re packed with features.
And at $140, it’s hard to find a better deal on premium earbuds. So, don’t miss your chance—grab the AirPods Pro 2 before this deal disappears!

iFixit's Teardown of New iPad Pro With M5 Chip Reveals 'Repair Paradox' Electronics repair website iFixit today shared a teardown video for the iPad Pro with the M5 chip, revealing a "repair paradox."
Specifically, iFixit said the iPad Pro remains one of Apple's least-repairable devices, yet the company did start offering self-service repair parts and manuals for iPads earlier this year. As a result of the self-service expansion, iFixit gave the latest iPad Pro a provisional repairability score of 5/10, which is higher than previous models.
Given the iPad Pro only received a spec-bump with the M5 chip, the teardown video does not reveal any notable internal changes.
The new iPad Pro launched last week, and Apple should release self-service parts for this particular model in the coming months.

This dock transforms the Mac mini into a retro classic Mac It’s becoming increasingly rare to find a tech accessory in 2025 that’s both functional and fun to use. As so many of these accessories become more commoditized, they begin to function and look the same, making them fade into the background. So when I saw the Wokyis Retro Docking Station for the M4 Mac mini, I was immediately intrigued. It transforms the Mac mini into something straight out of 1984. Avast Free Antivirus for Mac review: Basic protection, for free Macworld
At a glanceExpert's Rating
Pros
Easy installation and setup
Solid customization options such as whitelists, exceptions, and scheduled scans
Handy network tools like Traffic Monitor and Network Inspector
Cons
Steady stream of ads, upgrade prompts, and assorted locked features
The Web Guard module failed to catch obvious scam links
The Scam Guard failed to detect scam, phishing, and ransom attempts
Our Verdict
Avast Free Antivirus for Mac delivers on its historically strong antivirus/anti-malware tools and offers some interesting network tools. However, the inConsistent web filtering and the failure of its AI-powered Scam Guard module, drags down the free version of one of the better security options for macOS.

There’s a distinction that every software company’s marketing department has to make in terms of what’s a demo, what’s a free trial, what’s a teaser, and what’s the fully-featured version of a product it intends to release. The free version of Avast Security for the Mac, Avast Free Antivirus, combines a powerful antiviral/anti-malware core with several other modules, each with its own varying degree of success.
Downloading and installing the software is simple; Avast Free Antivirus requires macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later to install. The installer, somewhat surprisingly, places an uninstaller application in your Mac’s Applications folder for easy removal, a nod to convenience. Once installed, the software both creates a network extension for itself and requests full access to your Mac’s hard drive, which is handled without any undue fuss by the installer.
Like similar Mac antivirus applications, Avast’s antivirus suite is centered around several modules (Smart Scan, Virus Scans, Scam Guardian, Traffic Monitor, Network Inspector, Email Guard, Ransomware Shield, Core Shields, and Quarantine), each with its own settings and functions.
The Smart Scan updates virus definitions and performs a surface-level viral scan, while its Advanced Issues feature scans for ransomware, network vulnerabilities, and fake website threats. However, you will need to subscribe to unlock additional features. Expect ads to pop up frequently offering Avast Security’s upgraded subscription package and its expanded feature set.
Other modules, such as Traffic Monitor, follow up on features available in previous versions, and it’s fun to see where your internet traffic is traveling through and how much data you’re using. The Network Inspector takes this to the next level and offers a full network scan as well as a list of every device currently on the network, so you can be made aware if a device has connected that shouldn’t be there. Granted, this is only a casual set of network controls compared to a dedicated application, but it’s a nice tool to have on hand if you’re curious as to what’s happening on your network.
The Virus Scans module is the heart of the app as you would expect, and there’s a lot to complement it on. Avast’s viral definitions are up to date, the application can scan .zip and .dmg archives, there’s a good level of customization with the preferences, and it’s easy to build a whitelist.
Scanning external volumes is easy, and the scheduling function works well, but the function itself doesn’t jump up and declare that it’s running; you have to go into the Virus Scans module to watch it function. The Deep Scan feature is speedy, even if it could benefit from a timer declaring how much time has passed and/or an ETA as to how much time is remaining, and the overall antiviral element teams up well with the macOS’ Gatekeeper and Xprotect systems, which block everything that’s suspect (you genuinely have to bypass various dialog screens warning you as to what you’re about to do wrong to install malware). This, in turn, corresponds well with the Core Shields module, making it that much harder to install malware on your Mac.
The free version of Avast’s Antivirus found lots of threats. Foundry
Unfortunately, the remaining modules are locked by subscription. The Email Guard module is handy and ties into 22 different types of email accounts (such as Gmail, Outlook, etc.), but it is only available with a Premium account, and there’s no option to try it out without paying (with a subscription it provides decent warnings about spam and scam emails.)
The Web Guard module’s success rate is sporadic, and after clicking through to dozens of questionable links in my Gmail spam folder, it let me visit the link that claimed I had an almost $14,000 cash payment waiting for me, but caught other scam-related links and directed me away from them as needed.
Ransomware Shield, the accompanying sister module, also requires an upgraded account to access, and again, no demo is available in the free version, presenting a missed opportunity to show what the software is capable of.
The Scam Guard module, an AI-assisted application, didn’t work very well in the free version of Avast Antivirus Free. You can drag and drop emails, images, and other files onto it in order to determine how scam-related they might be. Unfortunately this wound up being a disaster. While an innocuous .jpg file of a sleeping puppy came up as non-scam-related, when I dropped more questionable emails onto it, it offered no feedback that the content was linked to something scam-related.
Just a cute puppy. Foundry
The module failed completely when I dropped in a PDF file of a Bitcoin ransom scam email, claiming I’ve been videotaped via my webcam and that this would be sent to my friends, family, and contacts unless several thousand dollars were sent via Bitcoin to the sender. This is the height of a phishing attempt, a ransom attempt through and through, which the Scam Guardian module failed to interpret correctly. The AI assistant was of no help whatsoever.
Just how much you should expect from a free antivirus is arguable, but Avast does clain that the Free Antivirus includes the AI-powered anti-scam protection, defense against online scams, and safer browsing and emailing, so really it’s fair to expect that those elements would work.
Avast will readily let you know that its Ultimate subscription tier is available for free for 60 days, and all you have to do is enter a credit or debit card or PayPal information to set this up, and it states that nothing is due today and that you’ll receive a reminder seven days before billing. If you wish to upgrade from Avast’s free version, the retail version sells for $4.09 per month for the first year with support for one Mac, or $49.08 for the first year if paid in full. Read our full review of Avast Premium Security.
Should you use Avast Free Antivirus
Is Avast’s free version worth trying out? Yes. The antiviral/anti-malware core is as good as it ever was, if not better, and the supporting modules largely round it out and add to its functionality. Still, the Web Guard is hit or miss, the Scam Guard felt like the Hindenburg on an off day during testing, and the constant barrage of reminders to upgrade to the paid subscription tiers is annoying.
There’s something credible here, but this application doesn’t know where it stands between freeware, trialware, and a fully-featured retail version, and there’s something to be said for releasing a fully-featured trial version for a given period of time and letting the user see what the software can actually do.
OpenAI's Sora App Adds Character Cameos and Video Stitching Tools OpenAI has rolled out another update to its Sora AI video app, one that builds on its existing video generation features with new tools designed to help users create longer, more narrative-driven content.
For anyone unfamiliar with the name, Sora is an invite-only AI video app and social network. It lets you create realistic, cinematic, and anime-style AI videos of yourself, friends, and other people, complete with synchronized speech and sound effects.
The headline feature in the latest update is character cameos, which expands on Sora's ability to create AI videos of real people. Users can now create reusable characters from any video upload – whether from their camera roll or existing Sora-generated content – and tag them in future video generations.
Once created, each character gets its own display name and handle, along with customizable permissions. Users can keep characters private, share them with mutual followers, or make them available to everyone on the platform. OpenAI is launching the feature with a selection of starter characters, including Halloween-themed options like Frankenstein, Dracula, Witch, and Ghost.
The update also introduces video stitching, allowing users to select multiple clips from their drafts and merge them into a single sequence. There's also a new community leaderboards feature that showcases the most remixed videos and most frequently used characters and cameos.
Introducing character cameos, now available in the Sora app. pic.twitter.com/k1R4FdCRPV— OpenAI (@OpenAI) October 29, 2025
OpenAI has temporarily relaxed Sora's invitation requirements to coincide with the update, allowing users in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Korea to sign up without an invite code for a limited time. The app is now also available in Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
The character cameo feature has already landed OpenAI in hot water – celebrity video platform Cameo filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against OpenAI just days before the update launched, challenging the company's use of "cameo" in Sora's features.
The Sora app debuted late last month and crossed one million downloads faster than ChatGPT did, despite being invite-only and available in just two countries at launch.Tag: OpenAIThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Mother Describes the Dark Side of Apple's Family Sharing An anonymous reader quotes a report from 9to5Mac: A mother with court-ordered custody of her children has described how Apple's Family Sharing feature can be weaponized by a former partner. Apple support staff were unable to assist her when she reported her former partner using the service in controlling and coercive ways... [...] Namely, Family Sharing gives all the control to one parent, not to both equally. The parent not identified as the organizer is unable to withdraw their children from this control, even when they have a court order granting them custody. As one woman's story shows, this can allow the feature which allows it to be weaponized by an abusive former partner.
Wired reports: "The lack of dual-organizer roles, leaving other parents effectively as subordinate admins with more limited power, can prove limiting and frustrating in blended and shared households. And in darker scenarios, a single-organizer setup isn't merely inconvenient -- it can be dangerous. Kate (name changed to protect her privacy and safety) knows this firsthand. When her marriage collapsed, she says, her now ex-husband, the designated organizer, essentially weaponized Family Sharing. He tracked their children's locations, counted their screen minutes and demanded they account for them, and imposed draconian limits during Kate's custody days while lifting them on his own [...] After they separated, Kate's ex refused to disband the family group. But without his consent, the children couldn't be transferred to a new one. "I wrongly assumed being the custodial parent with a court order meant I'd be able to have Apple move my children to a new family group, with me as the organizer," says Kate. But Apple couldn't help. Support staff sympathized but said their hands were tied because the organizer holds the power." Although users can "abandon the accounts and start again with new Apple IDs," the report notes that doing so means losing all purchased apps, along with potentially years' worth of photos and videos.

Don't get too excited yet about the China tariff cut Thursday's announcement about a halving of tariffs on goods shipped from China only applies to the summer's back-and-forth between the two nations, and not the "reciprocal" tariffs applied in April that Apple has already warned about.Tim Cook and Donald Trump in a meeting at the White House in 2018Apple won an exemption on future semiconductor tariffs — at least temporarily — after investing $100 billion in the US. But it is still subject to Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs, and the new truce negotiated with China does not affect that.According to the New York Times, Trump has agreed with China's Xi Jinping, to halve his fentanyl-related tariffs, which were announced over summer 2025. In its turn, China has agreed to suspend for a year its limits on exporting rare earth materials. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

8 Reasons to Wait for Next Year's iPhone 18 Pro Apple's iPhone development roadmap runs several years into the future and the company is continually working with suppliers on several successive iPhone models at the same time, which is why we often get rumored features months ahead of launch. The iPhone 18 series is no different, and we already have a good idea of what to expect for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
One thing worth noting is that Apple is reportedly planning a major change to its iPhone release cycle next year, adopting a two-phase rollout starting with the iPhone 18 series. That means the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold will be released in September 2026, followed by the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e in spring 2027.
Design
iPhone 17 Pro Style
Rumors suggest the iPhone 18 Pro lineup will largely retain the same design as the iPhone 17 Pro models. The rear camera system will look identical to the current generation, featuring a raised "plateau" with three lenses arranged in a triangle. Display sizes are also expected to remain unchanged, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max continuing to use 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch panels, respectively – the same dimensions introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro series. One rumor suggests that the Ceramic Shield area for MagSafe charging could have a "slightly transparent" design, but it is not clear what that means.
Smaller Dynamic Island
Under-Screen Face ID?
Rumors continue to circulate about whether the iPhone 18 Pro models will introduce under-display Face ID, but reports remain divided on when the technology will actually arrive. The feature would move the TrueDepth camera system beneath the display, eliminating the need for the current Dynamic Island cutout.
According to Wayne Ma of The Information, Apple is targeting a design without a Dynamic Island, replacing it with a single pinhole camera in the upper-left corner of the screen. However, other sources dispute that claim. Display analyst Ross Young believes under-display Face ID is possible for the iPhone 18 Pro, but says a smaller Dynamic Island will still be present. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has echoed this view, reporting that the new models will feature a slimmed-down Dynamic Island rather than removing it entirely.
Meanwhile, Chinese leaker Instant Digital has offered yet another version of events, saying the Dynamic Island will shrink in size, but that under-display Face ID and camera technology won't debut next year. Overall, the consensus suggests Apple may be refining the Dynamic Island before fully transitioning to an all-screen design in future generations.
A20 Pro Chip
2nm Process
Apple's upcoming A20 Pro chip, set to power the iPhone 18 Pro models, will reportedly be built using TSMC's third-generation 3nm process – the same node expected for the A19 Pro chip in this year's iPhone 17 Pro, according to analyst Jeff Pu. This suggests that year-over-year performance gains between the A19 Pro and A20 Pro may be modest, at least in terms of raw CPU and GPU improvements.
However, Pu notes that the A20 Pro will feature a more advanced packaging method known as CoWoS (Chip on Wafer on Substrate). This technology enables tighter integration between the processor, unified memory, and the Neural Engine, which could potentially enhance performance in AI-related tasks. The shift could be part of Apple's broader push to support on-device Apple Intelligence features in future iPhones, as the company ramps up its machine learning capabilities.
C2 Modem
Replacing Qualcomm
Apple plans to include its next-generation C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro models, according to supply chain analyst Jeff Pu. The chip will succeed the C1 modem, which debuted in the lower-cost iPhone 16e as Apple's first in-house cellular modem, and the C1X modem chip in the iPhone Air, which Apple says is up to 2× faster than the C1. The C2 is expected to bring faster speeds, improved power efficiency, and support for mmWave 5G in the United States – a feature missing from the C1 and C1X.
Apple's modem roadmap is part of a long-term strategy to reduce reliance on Qualcomm, which currently supplies 5G modems for the rest of the iPhone lineup. The company has been working on developing its own cellular chips for years, aiming for deeper integration and greater control over power management and performance.
New Camera Sensor
Samsung-Made
Samsung is working on a new three-layer stacked image sensor, reportedly intended for the iPhone 18. The sensor, referred to as PD-TR-Logic, integrates three layers of circuitry, which would improve camera responsiveness, reduce noise, and increase dynamic range. The leak comes from a source known as "Jukanlosreve," who claims the sensor is being developed specifically for Apple's 2026 iPhone lineup. Sony has long been Apple's sole image sensor supplier, so Samsung's entry would be a big shift in the iPhone's camera supply chain.
Variable Aperture
DSLR-Style
Apple intends to equip next year's iPhone 18 Pro models with a variable aperture lens, according to reports. Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station claims the main rear camera – what Apple calls the 48-megapixel Fusion camera – on both iPhone 18 Pro models will offer variable aperture, which would be a first for the iPhone. A variable-aperture system physically adjusts the lens opening, letting more light in for low-light shots or narrowing the opening for brighter scenes and deeper depth of field.
The main cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro all use a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture, where the lens is permanently set to its widest setting. With a variable lens, the iPhone 18 Pro would allow users to manually shift the aperture, similar to on a DSLR camera. This would mean more control over depth of field, enabling sharper focus on subjects or smoother background blur. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in November 2024 that Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models will get the feature.
5G Satellite Internet
Non-Terrestrial Data
According to a report by The Information, Apple plans to add support for 5G networks that operate via satellites rather than Earth-based towers as early as next year. This advancement would allow future iPhones to gain full internet connectivity through satellite, not just limited emergency features.
If Apple meets the 2026 target, the first devices to feature 5G satellite internet would likely be the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-rumored foldable iPhone. Apple partners with Globalstar for its iPhone satellite features, but there is currently no service that delivers full 5G satellite internet directly to a smartphone, and the report did not specify who would supply it.
Simplified Camera Control
New Design
Apple is reportedly working to simplify the Camera Control button's design on iPhone 18 models in order to reduce costs. The current Camera Control button on iPhone 17 models uses both capacitive and pressure sensors beneath a sapphire crystal surface. The capacitive layer detects touch gestures, while the force sensor recognizes different pressure levels for taps, presses, and swipes.
However, according to the Weibo-based account Instant Digital, Apple will remove the capacitive sensing layer and retain only pressure sensing recognition in the second iteration to achieve all Camera Control functions on the iPhone 18. The simplified version is not about reducing functionality in the button, but about saving money. The current solution is said to be very expensive for Apple and is generating costly after-sales repairs.Related Roundup: iPhone 18Related Forum: iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

US tariffs on Chinese imports affecting Apple are halved; threatened raises suspended Apple and/or its customers were facing billions of dollars a year in additional costs after increases to US tariffs on Chinese imports imposed by the Trump administration earlier this year. The company had initially absorbed these costs, but it was unclear how long that might last, with future price rises seeming likely.
There’s some good news today, however, with Trump halving the additional tariffs imposed after meeting with China’s President Xi. Additional tariff increases that were scheduled to come into effect shortly have also been suspended …

Whereas the Apple Watch Ultra 2 offered very minimal upgrades two years ago, the Ultra 3 is a complete overhaul of Apple’s rugged outdoor smartwatch. In addition to the expected leap to a new chip, the manufacturer has given the device a longer-lasting battery and a bigger and better screen.
There is also new connectivity that could come in handy on wilderness hikes. In addition to the switch from LTE to 5G, the smartwatch can use satellite connections to contact emergency services or share your location with contacts.
So it’s not a minor update. But is it a worthwhile one? Read on to find out.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: Bigger and better display
If you place the Ultra 1 and Ultra 3 next to each other, you’l notice how thin the display edges have become. Apple says they’re 24 percent thinner, while the display area has increased by five percent.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 (left) and Ultra 1 (right)
Apple has also improved the screen technology. As a result, the contents of the display can be seen sharply and clearly even from unfavourable angles.
Last but not least, scratch resistance is excellent. I tried several times to scratch the screen with my keys, without success.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: The perfect hiking companion
I took the Ultra 3 on a three-day hike in the Steinernes Meer to see how it behaves under stressful conditions.
On the battery front, it lived up to Apple’s promises, lasting almost two days on a single charge. I fully charged it on Thursday evening and went to bed with it. On Friday, we started our multi-day tour in Schönau, and the watch recorded a six-hour hike; I had loaded it with offline maps of the area and used it as a satnav. On the second day, we had a long and strenuous hike lasting 11 hours, of which the watch recorded eight. I only put it on a power bank in my bag towards the end of the tour.
Fortunately, I didn’t have to make an emergency call on the tour, but the Ultra 3 indicated with its satellite icon that network coverage is almost non-existent in the high mountains. On the Ingolstädter Haus, you had to go as far as the cable car ascent to send a message; during the three days on the trail, mobile coverage was spotty at several locations. Having the satellite connection was a reassuring backup for emergencies.
On the negative side, the Ultra 3 with its dual-band GPS still had problems finding its exact location in certain locations, such as between two high mountain faces. During the ascent via the Saugasse to the Kärlinger Haus, the WorkOutDoors app reported several times that I had deviated from the route, even though this is practically impossible: a single path leads to the plateau, which is bordered on both sides by the Sigeretplatte and the Simetsberg. Nevertheless, you can clearly see from the recorded route that the Ultra 3 made several mistakes.
Halyna Kubiv / Foundry
Despite these quibbles, the Ultra 3 is the perfect companion for multi-day hiking tours. The large battery easily lasts for two days, even if you navigate using the watch. And the new satellite antenna ensures a connection even in remote locations.
The only thing Apple still can’t do magically is GPS. The Ultra 3 sometimes loses its exact location in gullies and ravines, and hiking apps can falsely report that you have strayed from the route. With or without the Ultra 3, you still have to rely on your own senses and not rely entirely on digital assistance.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: Gold standard for heart-rate measurement
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 measures heart rate very accurately.
As a comparison reference device, I wore the Polar H10 chest strap during training sessions and synchronised the data with Apple Health. On my first attempt, I did two stretching sessions over the weekend. The two devices, Ultra 3 and Polar H10, show a correlation of 96.1 percent cumulatively across all workouts. This means that the values from the Apple Watch Ultra 3 correspond exactly to the values from the Polar H10 96.1 percent of the time. The latter is a gold standard in heart rate measurement and is even used in clinical studies, so it’s a strong benchmark for accurate performance.

This Apple News+ word game is better than Wordle, Connections, and Strands Macworld
Back when News+ launched in 2019, the value was somewhat debatable. While the $9.99 service offered access to hundreds of magazines as well as “premium online publications,” it paled in comparison to the New York Times’ All-Access subscription’s array of content, including recipes, sports, podcasts, and, most importantly, games.
Over time, that began to change. iOS 16.5 added a dedicated Sports tab for scores, standings, and related coverage, and later that year, Apple began offering daily crossword and crossword mini puzzles with iOS 17, and introduced News+ Food with restaurant reviews and recipes earlier this year.
In late 2023, Apple hiked the price from $9.99 to $12.99 a year, but it’s still a better value than when it launched for 30 percent less. It’s a little Google News, a little Zinio, and a little ESPN all rolled into one. I’m an Apple One subscriber, but even if I dropped that, I’d still subscribe to Apple News+.
But the reason isn’t the news. It’s the games. Apple News+ includes five puzzles that subscribers can play each day: Crossword and Crossword Mini, Quartiles, Sudoku, and Emoji Game. The crosswords and sudoku games are self-explanatory, and Quartiles is a fun Boggle-esque word game that challenges you to create compound words from a set of 20 fragments.
Apple’s Emoji Game is a perfect mix of fun, challenging, and addicting.Apple
They’re all fun, but ever since Emoji Game arrived on July 17 to mark World Emoji Day, I’ve been hooked. It’s as addictive as Wordle, more challenging than Strands, and as clever as Connections.
The concept is simple. Each day, there are three short phrases with blanks corresponding to an emoji-based word. Each phrase has a clue that is only partially revealed, so the challenge is two-fold: figure out the phrase with only a part of a clue, and then figure out which emoji sequence fills in the missing letter. A perfect score is 6, and each wrong answer or clue reveal adds a point to the score.
Some emoji clues replace full words, others are parts of words or span two words. For example, Wednesday’s first puzzle showed “Intelligent birds…” under a 7-letter word broken down into one three-word and one four-word blank. Tapping the clue revealed “Intelligent birds in the crow family,” and the answers were MAG (an emoji of an open magazine) and PIES (two pie emojis).
It’s harder than it looks and requires a specific way of reasoning to figure out. Sometimes you need to figure out the phrase first, other times, recognizing one of the emoji clues will help make sense of a phrase. It’s fun, challenging, and clever, and only takes a couple of games to get completely hooked. It’s the first thing I do in the morning now, even before Wordle and Connections.
You’ll need to be an Apple News+ subscriber to play ($12.99 per month, free one-month trial), however, and it’s not so easy to find if you haven’t played before. To get to the games tab on an iPhone, launch the News app, then tap the search icon at the bottom right of the menu bar, and then navigate to Puzzles. There you’ll find the Emoji Game with today’s games spotlighted along with a full archive going back to July.
If you can’t stop playing, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Some AirPods Pro 3 Owners Complain About Static Noise Some AirPods Pro 3 owners have been experiencing a problem with a static-like sound when Active Noise Cancellation is on but no media is playing, according to complaints on Reddit and the MacRumors forums.
Those who are affected have described the noise as static, an audible hiss, white noise, rain, and an ocean-like sound similar to holding a seashell up to the ear. There have been reports of users hearing the static sound in ANC, Adaptive, and Transparency modes. From MacRumors reader ugh:
It's very strange, I would think it's defective, but it's on both ears?? You can switch ANC from on to off, clearly ANC is quieting down the lower frequencies, but the higher frequencies seem to actually get LOUDER in a quiet room when turning ANC on. It just sounds like I have a small fan on in the room all the time (I do not).
From xJohnyxx:
Very pronounced in mine but only in Transparency/Adaptive mode. And only, or at least way more pronounced, in the right one. Had absolutely zero static noise with APP2. Will be returning since I also don't quite like the new sound profile and they are less comfortable for me.
From rolan2q:
OMG after one week of ownership I had to exchange my AirPods Pro 3. During a flight from NYC to Chicago I had a whistling/wind noise on my right Airpod the whole time. I reset, repaired, cleaned them and same thing. Hopefully this is not a widespread issue.
Some users say the static is worse in one AirPod than the other, and others suggest that high frequencies also seem to be oddly amplified. Music mitigates the problem for some users, but not others. From EdRecde on Reddit:
I have the same problem. It's not possible to hear music at a low level around 30 db because the static is too much. It's my first pair of AirPods so I can't compare but only switching the microphones off makes the headphones silent
Not all AirPods Pro 3 units seem to be affected, and there are people who appear to be experiencing no issue at all. Some users may also be less sensitive to any kind of ambient static sound.
One user who reported the issue to Apple received replacement AirPods, and other people have exchanged the AirPods Pro 3 but experienced the same issue with the replacement pair. One user said that Apple is directing store employees to exchange the AirPods Pro 3 for users who report static issues.
It's not clear if the static that people are hearing is related to hardware or software, but if it is a software issue, Apple could address it in future firmware updates. The only option for eliminating the static entirely appears to be turning ANC and Transparency off, which can be done in the Settings app when wearing the AirPods. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Apple adds new App Store submission and marketing features, will phase out promo codes in 2026 Apple is rolling out a round of enhancements that will make it easier for developers to submit, manage, and market their apps on the App Store. Here’s what’s new.
Apple Announces Three App Store Updates for Developers Apple today added new features and expanded flexibility to its App Store review process. Developers are now able to submit additional items for review when an existing submission is already under review.
Apple says that developers can submit an update to address a major bug even if there's another app version that's still being reviewed. Apple gives several examples of what can be submitted:
One or more In-App Events in a separate submission if you have an app version under review.
An app version to address a critical bug that's separate from any existing custom product pages under review.
One or more Game Center features -- including achievements, leaderboards, challenges, and more.
More information is available on Apple's app submission instruction page.
Apple is doubling the number of custom product pages that developers can create to highlight content and features in apps. Up to 70 custom pages can be published at any time, and keywords can also be assigned to each custom product page to make them more discoverable on the App Store.
In addition to new app review features and support for more custom product pages, Apple is also expanding offer codes to all In-App purchase types. Offer codes are available for consumable, non-consumable, and non-renewing subscriptions in addition to auto-renewable subscriptions. Apple also added offer codes for auto-renewable subscriptions that don't auto-renew after the promotional period ends.
Offer codes allow developers to provide people with limited-time offers for free or discounted In-App purchase content. Apple is replacing promo codes with offer codes, and as of March 26, 2026, there will no longer be an option to create promo codes for In-App purchases in App Store Connect. Promo codes will continue to be available to provide people with free app downloads, and already-available promo codes will continue to work until they expire.Tags: App Store, Apple Developer ProgramThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

How Vibration-Based Speakers Work and Why Apple Might Use Them in the iPad Mini 8 The next-generation iPad mini 8 could feature an updated design that removes the speaker holes for improved water resistance, with Apple considering a new speaker system design. The new system would use vibration-based technology, according to Bloomberg, which would make it unique among Apple products if it's adopted.
It turns out there are already some devices on the market that use vibration-based sound, giving some insight into how the technology works and how Apple might implement the feature.
Vibration-Based Sound
Apple could be planning to use a sound exciter, which creates sound waves by causing a surface like a glass panel or metal frame to vibrate. A piezo or electromagnetic exciter can use almost any surface for resonance, and there's no need for a standard speaker that sends vibrations through a diaphragm.
Apple could attach an exciter to the iPad mini's chassis or display. When playing audio, the exciter could vibrate the panel to move air and create sound with no traditional speaker or need for speaker holes.
The iPad has a decent-sized display that could support multiple exciters to allow for stereo sound, with the screen divided into sub-panels to serve as separate diaphragms.
Patents
Apple has patented a system similar to what's described above. Apple's "mechanically actuated panel acoustic system" patent describes an electronic device with an enclosure that's used as part of an acoustic system.
The enclosure is divided into sub-panels, and each sub-panel has one or more actuators to vibrate the sub-panel. The actuator and attached sub-panel then convert an audio signal to acoustic output.
Real-World Examples
Huawei's 2019 P30 Pro debuted "Acoustic Display Technology," featuring an under-display speaker. It included a tiny exciter that vibrated the glass screen, turning the entire display into a speaker. An iFixit teardown revealed that Huawei was using a small coil with a magnet in the middle paired with a component that vibrated the screen to create sound.
Based on reviews, the Acoustic Display Technology worked well, but Huawei only used it for calls. All the rest of the smartphone's audio was routed through an additional bottom speaker, and the lack of stereo sound wasn't popular. Huawei released one more model with the technology, the P40, before returning to a more traditional system for subsequent smartphones.
Some TVs have used the technology to improve sound. LG's G8 ThinQ used the entire OLED display as a diaphragm, vibrating the screen to produce sound. LG paired it with a bottom speaker for stereo performance and to handle bass.
Sony's OLED TVs have used an "Acoustic Surface" for sound for several years. The TVs include multiple actuators behind the display that vibrate the screen to create sound. Sony says sound is precisely aligned with what you see, for a more immersive viewing experience. The technology is often praised in reviews of Sony TV sets.
It wouldn't be a surprise to see Apple adopt something like the Acoustic Surface, positioning it as a way for users to get immersive, spatial sound even when not wearing AirPods or other headphones that support spatial audio.
There are also plenty of "invisible" speakers that are meant to be mounted behind drywall or in ceilings. They use surface exciters to vibrate the material they're attached to, turning walls into speaker drivers.
Water Resistance
Removing the speaker holes provide fewer paths for water ingress. The current iPad mini has speaker holes at the top and bottom of the device, and no water resistance rating.
It's not clear what water resistance rating the iPad mini might get. The iPhone has IP68 water resistance, which means it can withstand being under water that's six meters deep for at least 30 minutes.
Microphone Holes
If Apple eliminates speaker holes on the iPad mini, microphone holes would likely remain. The iPad mini 7 has one microphone hole at the top and a second microphone hole located below the camera.
The iPhone also has microphone holes, so Apple could use gaskets and adhesive for water resistance without impacting functionality.
Potential Drawbacks
Bass is an issue with vibration-based audio systems. Sony, for example, integrates separate subwoofers in its TVs to add bass. Apple could use a similar hybrid solution, or use digital signal processing to make up for the missing bass frequencies.
Surface speakers can radiate mids and highs across the panel, but perceived width can be narrower because the vibration comes from a single surface rather than two separate drivers in different locations. If Apple uses actuators to vibrate the iPad mini's chassis or display, audio playback might not sound as full as stereo speakers do.
Touch can dampen sound by absorbing vibration. Apple could likely mitigate this with sensors that determine how the iPad is held, adjusting the vibration pattern accordingly.
Other iPad mini 8 Features
Along with water resistance, rumors suggest the iPad mini 8 could be the first iPad other than the iPad Pro to get OLED display technology.
If implemented, Apple's vibration-based sound system could require some fancy audio processing. The iPad mini is expected to have the same A19 Pro chip that Apple introduced in the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 Pro.
Launch Timing
Apple could release the iPad mini 8 as soon as 2026.Related Roundup: iPad miniBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Neutral)Related Forum: iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
