Macworld Best iPhone 17, Pro, Max and Air deals: Updated March 9, 2026 In the U.S. you can get some savings on unlocked iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max at Apple’s Refurbished store. See below for the best carrier deals on the newer iPhones. U.K. shoppers can get discounts on the current generation of iPhones, with savings to be had on the iPhone Air: iPhone Air 256GB: £200 off at Amazon U.K. In September 2025 Apple launched the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and the iPhone Air. Then, in March 2026, the iPhone 17e joined the line up. If you’re scouting out ways to buy any of those iPhone models, we have your back. Whether it’s directly from Apple, from your go-to retailer, or your carrier, there are loads of options to get yourself a new phone. You don’t have to buy the iPhone 17, 17e, 17 Pro, or Pro Max, or the iPhone Air, directly from Apple, all the major carriers will offer you one on contract. One of the benefits of not buying from Apple is that you can take advantage of special promotions and deals offered by popular retailers and carriers. And, if you are shopping from the U.K., resellers, including Amazon, will sell you an unlocked iPhone at a good discount. Best iPhone 17 deals in the U.S. – How to get the best iPhone prices in the U.S. If you are based in the U.S., the best deals for a new iPhone tend to be from the big U.S. carriers, such as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. In the U.S. an unlocked iPhone 17 has a starting price of $829 at Apple, but you can get up to $700 off with a trade-in (though most people will get around $400). You will also get an extra $30 discount if you activate the phone with one of the available carriers — AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, or Verizon. All in all, you’ll save hundreds on the price as long as you have a new-ish phone to trade in. One of the easiest ways to get the new iPhone is directly from your carrier. AT&T: You can get up to $830 off the iPhone 17 when you trade in an eligible iPhone. The savings transform into monthly credits on your bill for the next 36 months. T-Mobile: The carrier offers iPhone 17 models for free when you switch to T-Mobile and add a line on the Experience plans. The money transforms into bill credits spread over the next 24 months. T-Mobile is offering $1,100 off an iPhone Air or 17 Pro Max. Verizon: Save up to $1,099 with a trade-in and a new line. This offer is only available online. U.S. Cellular: You can get $999 off an iPhone Air at U.S. Cellular. Xfinity Mobile: If you trade in a qualifying phone you can get up to $830 off a new iPhone 17 series model. Boost Mobile: You can get $850 off the price of the iPhone 17 with Boost’s $65 per month plan. You can also get your phone from one of the big retailers, though they might not have all of the same color and capacity options as the Apple Store: Walmart: Prices start at $849 with AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon activation. Best Buy: Prices start at $830 with AT&T or Verizon activation. Up to $375 in trade-in. Best iPhone 17 deals in the U.K. It’s a different story in the U.K. where there are fewer limitations on the sale of iPhones, so you will be able to pick one up unlocked at a discount if you would prefer to buy an iPhone up front, rather than on a contract. The deals tend to be on the older iPhones: we’re seeing the iPhone 16e for £499 at Amazon, for example. With a 6.5-inch display and just 5.6mm thick, this iPhone Air is a technical marvel, with an A19 Pro processor, 18MP Center Stage selfie camera, and 48MP Fusion camera that can capture 4K video at 60fps. There are some sacrifices, such as less battery life and a single camera, but if you want the latest “wow” phone, this is the one to get Prices for the iPhone Air start at $999 for the 256GB version, and it goes as high as $1,399 for the 1TB model. Apple offers up to $700 off with a trade-in, and you can activate your phone straight away with AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, or Verizon, although there’s no activation discount at all. There’s no extra discount if you activate your phone with one of the available carriers (AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, or Verizon) straight away, so it doesn’t matter if you choose to connect to one at a later time. They’ve also got three 48MP rear cameras, including an 8X optical-quality telephoto lens. For real iPhone pros, this is the best phone yet. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are a bit pricier, starting at $1,099 and going up to $1,999 for the decked-out 2TB version of the Pro Max. Apple offers up to $700 off with a trade-in. There’s no extra discount if you activate your phone with one of the available carriers (AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, or Verizon) straight away, so it doesn’t matter if you choose to connect to one at a later time. Foundry At the beginning of February 2026, Apple completely changed the way the online Apple Store works. Previously, the Apple Store presented a clear selection of configurations and buying options, allowing shoppers to choose the model that best suited their needs and budget. Now, shoppers begin with a base configuration and add options – such as more RAM or additional storage – until they reach the specification they want. With this new approach, it is less obvious up front how much an ideal configuration will cost, which we think is a disadvantage for buyers. Apple, however, is likely hoping that this method will encourage customers to choose higher-end configurations. Another consequence of this change to how you buy a Mac is that it has become more difficult to compare pricing between generations. With the arrival of the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro, prices and configurations have changed significantly. At first glance it may appear that prices have increased, but in some cases you now get more for your money because the new models don’t just include a new chip – they also double the storage. In other cases, prices are higher because the lower-capacity models have been removed from the lineup. MacBook Pro, M5: This model has been on sale since October and previously started at $1,599. However, in March 2026 Apple removed the 512GB model from the lineup, meaning the entry-level configuration now starts at $1,699. At first glance this may look like a price increase, but the base model now includes 1TB of storage instead of 512GB. Previously, the 1TB model cost $1,799, so the effective price has actually dropped by $100. 14-inch MacBook Pro, M5 Pro: The base 14-inch M5 Pro MacBook is $2,199. That is a $200 increase from the base M4 Pro MacBook Pro, but now comes with 1TB storage, rather than 512GB. Upgrading to a 1TB SSD in the $1,999 M4 Pro MacBook Pro added $200 to the price tag, bringing it to the same $2,199. So effectively, the pricing has not changed. 14-inch MacBook Pro, M5 Max: Now starts at $3,599 with a 2TB SSD. The laptop it replaces, the M4 Max MacBook Pro, started at $3,199, but it came with a 1TB SSD, and an upgrade to 2TB was $400, bringing its price to $3,599. So pricing is essentially the same, but the starting price is higher due to the extra storage. 16-inch MacBook Pro, M5 Pro: Now starts at $2,699 with an M5 Pro processor and 2TB of storage. The 1TB option is no longer available, so the entry price to own a 16-inch model is now higher. 16-inch MacBook Pro, M5 Max: Alternatively you can spend $3,899 to get an M5 Max chip and 2TB of storage. It’s more expensive because you’re forced into higher storage tiers. New vs old MacBook Pricing: At a glance We recommend that you compare any deals on older MacBook Pro models with the equivalent model available now, to make sure you are getting a better deal. The M5 Pro and M5 Pro Max versions of the MacBook Pro launched in March 2026 so now is a great time to buy one.Foundry Now is a good time to buy a new MacBook Pro if you’re looking for the latest model. The MacBook Pro now comes with the newest M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips, and Apple has also increased storage across the range. In some cases, you actually get more for your money than before. However, as explained above, MacBook Pro models generally cost more than they did prior to Apple’s March 2026 update. As is usually the case when new Macs launch, resellers are likely to discount older models to clear stock. This time, however, the older machines don’t just lack the new chip – they also come with half the storage. Any discounts should take this into account; if they don’t, those deals are best avoided. In some cases though, it may still be worth grabbing a deal on a lower-storage M4 Pro or M4 Max model. This is because, while the new generation offers more storage, it also comes at a significantly higher price. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, the previous generation may be your best option. Which MacBook Pro to buy The choice of which MacBook depends a lot on how much you have to spend.Foundry When deciding on a MacBook Pro, it’s important to understand the performance hierarchy. The M5 Pro and M5 Max models are for a completely different user than the standard M5 MacBook Pro. The M5 Pro offers more CPU and GPU cores than the M5, supports more memory, and includes more advanced ports like Thunderbolt 5. The M5 Max has the same number of CPU cores but more GPU cores and greater support for RAM. 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 chip: This is the entry-level model, launched in October 2025 with a slight change to the line up in March 2026. It delivers significant performance gains compared, particularly in graphics and SSD speeds, over the previous M4 generation. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip is designed for users who need more sustained performance than a MacBook Air can offer but don’t require the top-tier power of the M5 Pro or M5Max models. It strikes a balance of price, performance, and premium features, making it the best MacBook for those who need a little more power than the M5 MacBook Air offers. 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips: For the most demanding professional work, the M5 Pro and M5Max models, released in March 2026, provide superior power, offer more ports (including Thunderbolt 5), and are aimed at professionals with demanding workflows. These MacBooks are ideal for creative professionals (such as high-end video creators, digital artists, illustrators, photographers, 3D animators); technical professionals (programmers, designers, and software developers) and power users who needs more “oomph” for movie editing or gaming. There is another element to the decision. Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max are available in both 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which offer similar specifications but differ in screen size and battery life. To determine which would suite you best consider the following: The 14-inch M4 Pro/Max is best for those who value portability, work frequently on the road, or primarily use an external monitor at their desk. It offers up to 22 hours of battery life. The 16-inch M4 Pro/Max is the choice for users who need a large, powerful screen on the go and the best possible battery life, which is rated at up to 24 hours. These Macs now come with 2TB storage as standard, with a price to match, which may mean they are now our of reach of some budgets. Best MacBook Pro refurbished deals While Apple rarely discounts new Macs, from time to time there are some excellent deals to be had in Apple’s Refurbished Store. The Macs in Apple’s refurbished store may be ex-display stock, or they may have been returned to Apple due to a fault, but they are fully reconditioned now and come with a full year’s warranty. Apple has already finalized plans for next year's entry-level "iPhone 18e" model, according to a known leaker. According to a new post from the Weibo user known as "Fixed Focus Digital," Apple has now locked in plans for the iPhone 18e. This is despite the fact that the iPhone 17e hasn't yet launched. The iPhone 17e features the A19 chip, Apple's C1X modem, MagSafe, and 256GB of base storage. Little is known about the iPhone 18e's features at this stage, but the A20 chip seems highly likely. The Dynamic Island is also a potential feature since it was rumored for the iPhone 17e and many such features seem to trickle down to Apple's entry-level devices over time. The iPhone 18e is rumored to launch alongside the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 in the spring of 2027. For the first time ever, it will have a computer aimed at kids on a budget, and Apple Stores everywhere are sure to be mobbed with people who want a look at the new machine. Nothing introduces a new era better than a whole new marketing scheme. At the same time Apple announced the MacBook Neo, it also began posting TikTok videos clearly aimed at Gen Z and Gen Alpha kids who have probably never owned a Mac. The videos are quirky and weird in all the right ways, but what really captured everyone’s attention was a couple of quick appearances of a little Finder guy. So far, he’s made two brief appearances on Apple’s TikTok account. The first was on a TLDR video showcasing the Neo’s specs, while the second glimpse was captured by X user @m2macmini during a TikTok livestream called “Matcha Break with MacBook Neo.” In the video still, he’s seen working at a tiny desk with an even tinier MacBook Neo, drinking a cup of matcha. In the U.S., the iPhone 17e starts at the same $599 as the iPhone 16e did, but it has a doubled 256GB of base storage. The Verge's Allison Johnson recommended that customers purchase the standard iPhone 17 for an extra $200 over the iPhone 17e, if they can afford to. The standard iPhone 17 has been very popular, and it offers some features the iPhone 17e lacks, including a 120Hz ProMotion display, a Dynamic Island, and an extra Ultra Wide rear camera. If you do opt for the iPhone 17e, though, MagSafe and the 256GB of base storage are the two key upgrades over the iPhone 16e. CNN Underscored's Mike Andronico called MagSafe a "huge" addition:While the iPhone 17e looks and feels just like last year's model, there's one huge change under the hood: MagSafe support. Apple's latest entry level phone works with the wide ecosystem of magnetic accessories out there, including MagSafe wallets, MagSafe battery packs and MagSafe charging stands. It's been so nice being able to plop my iPhone 17e on my Belkin Boost Charge stand while I'm at my desk and snap on my Baseus PicoGo battery pack when I'm on the go, two major conveniences I often have to give up when testing a cheaper phone. MagSafe allows for twice the wireless charging speed at 15W versus 7.5W, and while Google just joined the party with its similar PixelSnap tech, you won't find that feature on the new $500 Google Pixel 10a.Google's budget Pixel 10a smartphone lacks an equivalent MagSafe feature. iPhone 17e benchmarks already surfaced last week, revealing that the device's A19 chip is up to 15% faster than the iPhone 16e's A18 chip and unsurprisingly on par with the standard iPhone 17. In other words, performance is totally fine. iPhone 17e features Apple's latest C1X modem for cellular connectivity. Apple says the C1X is up to twice as fast as the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e. On AT&T's network in New Jersey, PCMag's Eric Zeman said the iPhone 17e achieved a peak download speed of 419 Mbps, but he did not test any other devices for comparison. In a study published in September, Ookla said the iPhone 16e achieved a median download speed of 169 Mbps on AT&T, so it seems like twice-as-fast 5G is roughly accurate. The first reviews of the iPad Air with the M4 chip have been shared by selected publications and YouTube channels, ahead of the device launching this Wednesday. The new iPad Air features the M4 chip, 12GB of memory, the N1 wireless chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity, and Apple's C1X modem on cellular models. Everything else remains unchanged compared to last year's M3 model. M3 vs. M4 iPad Air Buyer's Guide: All Differences Compared Many of the reviews noted the small, iterative nature of the M4 iPad Air over last year's M3 model, with many features like the design, 60Hz Liquid Retina display, and Touch ID button lingering unchanged since 2020. Tom's Guide said: I wouldn't go so far to say that the Air's design has calcified, but if you go back several generations, you'll see little has changed from year to year. The M4 Air has the same design as the Air Apple released back in 2020. To be sure, it's a great look — thin, light, and a nice slim bezel all the way around. The main upgrade is the move to the M4 chip, which reviewers agreed is noticeably faster than last year's M3 model, even if it doesn't dramatically change what can be achieved with the device. Now powered by an M4 chip, the iPad Air is modestly faster than last year's iPad Air M3. On our benchmark tests, it scored appreciably faster, both in single- and multicore, as well as in frame rate tests. The most notable difference you'll see is if you go back a couple of generations; the M4 iPad scored nearly two times higher than the M1 Air on our Geekbench test. Mashable highlighted the new chip's better optimization for AI tasks: I tried to test its AI capabilities using apps like Final Cut Pro's auto-captions, Voice Memo's transcription features, and CollaNote's AI image generation. Even with WiFi and cellular data turned off, these processes happened almost instantly, and without any big mistakes. In CollaNote, the popular note-taking app, you can use the Magic Pen to circle a doodle and turn it into an actual graphic. Record a note or interview with Voice Memos, and you'll get an accurate transcription at the push of a button. In Pixelmator, you can upscale images and remove backgrounds from photos practically instantly. I also feel like I'm barely scratching the surface of what you can do with the iPad Air's Neural Engine, particularly when it comes to utilizing Apple Shortcuts and open-source models. Gizmodo noted that while the new iPad Air benefits from the M4 chip, it still falls short of the version of the M4 used in other devices like the MacBook Air: The iPad Air isn't powered by the same M4 chip in the M4 MacBook Air. The tablet chip is a binned version, meaning it contains fewer cores than the maxed-out 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Apple configured the M4 iPad Air version with an 8-core CPU and a 9-core GPU. In practice, you won't see quite the same performance as you would on the M4 MacBook Air. It's also slower for more graphically demanding tasks, like 3D modeling. What may be helping the M4 iPad Air get a leg up is the upgrade to 12GB of unified memory. That's 4GB more than the M3 iPad Air. This will necessarily increase speeds for when you have multiple apps open at once. It will also boost overall performance. Reviewers also looked at the new connectivity chips in the device, noting solid performance with no perceptible drawbacks to moving to Apple's custom hardware. Engadget writes: The other main change is Apple's in-house networking chips are on board here. The N1 covers Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, while the C1X handles cellular connectivity if you buy a 5G-capable model. Again, this doesn't change the experience of using the iPad Air in any major way, but having the newest Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocols on board is good for future usage, regardless of who built the chip. In my testing, the C1X on Verizon's 5G network was extremely fast around the suburbs of Boston and didn't seem any slower (or any faster) than other devices I have running on the same carrier. That's fine, as other Apple devices I've tried with the C1X (like the iPad Pro) are solid and reliable, which is the most important thing. Macworld Apple has posted a flurry of TikTok videos following the launch of the MacBook Neo last week, and they’re pretty bizarre. In fact, anyone older than Gen Alpha may find them entirely incomprehensible. Apple has been on TikTok since April 2020, but you wouldn’t know it to look at the company’s account. It has a policy, here and on other social media networks, of deleting all of its posts from time to time in order to clear the decks for a major launch, and there are currently just 12 videos on there, all posted since the middle of last week. Of the 12 videos, the first three are relatively normal, announcing the launch of the MacBook Neo, showing it being unboxed, and summarising its specs and features. But then things get strange. The next three videos focus on citrus, the most eye-catching of the Neo’s color finishes. And the videos celebrate this with what those under the age of 16 would call brain-rot memes: “I love limes;” images of bubbles on citrus fruit, with strange accompanying noises; and a lime FaceTiming a lemon. It’s enough to make a middle-aged journalist feel very confused and very old, and that’s probably the idea. Apple is making it clear that the MacBook Neo is targeted squarely at young customers and the education market in particular. As we’ve written elsewhere, if you’re questioning the tech specs of the device, it’s not for you. Compared to the citrus videos, the rest seem almost normal. But in isolation, they’re still objectively odd. The next three are about the blush pink color option, so we get (obviously) Apple’s iconic face logo blushing and getting cute anime eyes; sped-up footage of a pink sunrise accompanied by the Apple startup sound; and POV of someone putting on pink blusher. There’s a brief interlude for grainy footage seemingly from the launch of the original Macintosh, with a binary caption that translates into the word “mother.” Then to finish, we turn to the indigo color finish, which means images of hands stained dark blue, and some sloshing dark blue liquid; and someone wearing dark blue jeans and incredibly noisy shoes revealing they have a MacBook in their back pocket. The comments on the videos are mixed. I saw several asking if Apple’s account had been hacked, or even if everything was okay. But it seems like exactly the sort of reaction the company would have wanted. Simon Jary We set up the 16-inch monitor on a stand so that it could hover above our 14-inch MacBook Pro’s own screen. UPerfect also offers a 14-inch UColor O2 version. Simple setup: How easy is the UPerfect UColor O2 to set up? The UColor O2 can connect to your device via USB-C—compatible with the MacBook’s Thunderbolt—or mini-HDMI if you prefer. Two USB-C cables—one for video signal and the other for power—are included as is a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable. Setup is simple, and you can set resolution and refresh rate as well as arrange the second monitor in the Mac’s System Settings > Displays. Simon Jary How good is the OLED display for work, gaming and video? The UPerfect UColor O2 is a 16-inch OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) panel with a 16:10 ratio. It supports a 3K resolution (2880 x 1800) at an impressive 120Hz refresh rate that eliminates stuttering and smearing and will excite gamers and video viewers. The 212ppi pixel density is appreciated. OLED is generally considered better than LCD/IPS for picture quality—because each pixel emits its own light and can turn off completely, OLED delivers truer deep blacks and more vibrant, accurate colors. Response time (1ms) is quicker, which reduces ghosting in motion. And viewing angles are better, with colors remaining accurate from nearly any angle—on LCD panels they may fade or change tint. If you leave images onscreen for prolonged periods, IPS screens might be a better choice as they don’t suffer from the image retention that can affect OLEDs with static content. IPS panels often achieve higher peak brightness, but the UColor O2 boasts 500-nit brightness that eclipses many of the portable displays we have tested. In comparison, the Plugable 15.6-inch USB-C Portable HD Display features 300 nits luminance, and the popular ViewSonic VA1655 maxes at 250 nits. The 16:10 screen ratio provides a wider vertical field of view than standard 16:9 displays, allowing you to display more content at the same time. 16:10 provides around 10% more vertical screen space, so reducing scrolling in documents and web pages. 16:9 is the industry standard for TV/movies and games, so 16:10 might be a negative for gamers despite this monitor’s other pro-games specs. A VESA mount makes it easy to add to a flexible stand.Simon Jary How is it powered, and does it support pass-through charging? OLED screens require higher power than lesser screen types, so the monitor may need to be connected to a power source. The display itself can draw power from the connected laptop, or you can connect a charger or power bank to one of the display’s USB-C ports. A 30W USB-C wall charger is included in the box but can use any Mac laptop charger if you desire. Some displays allow pass-through charging, so you don’t need a separate power cable to the MacBook, but this isn’t a feature on the UColor O2 Display. The Plugable 15.6-inch portable can pass-through up to 85W of power to the laptop. There’s also no built-in battery that would enable you to use the screen longer on the go, but this would have added considerable weight to the monitor, making it less portable. Simon Jary Is the UColor O2 worth the price? The UPerfect UColor O2 16:10 3K/120Hz Display is priced at $629.99/£473.52, but there seems to be a permanent discount—which stood at $379.99/£285.61 at the time of this review. You can buy cheaper portable monitors—such as the $239 Plugable USBC-PDMON, but you’ll sacrifice specs such as screen 3K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and 500-nit brightness. Macworld Before Apple unveiled the MacBook Neo on Wednesday, the consensus online was that it would cost too much. Following the shuffling of the MacBook Air lineup on Tuesday, it became clear that the Neo would slide under the Air’s previous $999 slot, maybe $700, but probably $800. It was already declared DOA. Apple instead released a $599 laptop ($499 for students) with 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, Magic Keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, 1080p webcam, Spatial Audio speakers, and a gorgeous aluminum design. It comes in colors we haven’t seen on a Mac in decades and is aimed at people who are otherwise comfortable using a budget Chromebook or Windows PC. Apple is going to sell a ton of them, and the people who buy one are probably going to love it. But to read through social media feeds since the announcement, you’d think Apple was charging $1,299 for an entry-level iPad. Scroll through the timeline on your social network of choice, and you’ll read all kinds of advice from experts proclaiming that the MacBook Neo is underpowered, overpriced, and underwhelming compared to similarly priced Windows laptops. It’s all lies. MacBook misinformation This post from Sankew on X sums up the general criticism of the MacBook Neo: i don't care what anyone says, but the MacBook Neo is not worth it-Only 8GB RAM-No Touch ID on the base model-No Backlit keys-No force touch trackpad, it's a diving board trackpad-Weak I/Oyou should probably get a M2, M3 or M4 MacBook Air at a discount instead. pic.twitter.com/0rld2WUHAk— Sankew (@Sankew06) March 4, 2026 I’ve read countless posts suggesting that getting an older Air is a better option. It’s terrible advice for someone looking for a budget MacBook. For one, any M2 or M3 Air is likely to be refurbished, and any M4 you find will be several hundred dollars more than the Neo. Mind you, the M2 MacBook Air is the same machine people criticized for starting at $1,099 with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. And now tech influencers are recommending buying one four years later because they don’t want to admit that the MacBook Neo got everything right. Would Neo be a better machine with an A19 Pro with 12GB of RAM and a P3 display? Of course, but that’s not what the MacBook Neo is and not who it’s made for. And the tech bros on X and other platforms advising people to buy something else are simply spreading misinformation. There are real reasons to criticize the MacBook Neo. Tying Touch ID to the $699 model effectively forces people to compromise on security. The trackpad misses out on Quick Look and other Force Touch features. It’s the first MacBook since 2011 that doesn’t feature a backlit keyboard. The Indigo color should be brighter. But instead of appreciating the MacBook Neo for what it is, social media is filled with terrible advice: Foundry Any used M-series MacBook Air you can find in this price range will still have 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and a 13-inch display, and it won’t be under Apple’s warranty anymore. You won’t be able to get AppleCare, and it’ll likely stop getting updates a year or two before the Neo. It might be scratched and dented. It’s a lie—there isn’t a used $600 MacBook Air on the planet that will be better than a Neo. Looking through the wrong Windows The MacBook Neo is obviously targeted at Windows and Chromebook users, particularly students. Apple has built a machine with low-end specs that performs well enough, but stands out for its design, camera, speakers, and display. There are plenty of similarly priced PCs to compare against the Neo, but few of the comparisons will be flattering. Still, you’ll find them all over your feeds. Take Windows Latest, which has 50,000 followers and nearly 500,000 views on the following tweet: This is the ASUS A14 with an OLED display, 60Hz refresh rate, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and all-day battery life thanks to Snapdragon.Oh, and it also has five physical ports. How many do you have on the MacBook Neo?Sure, the MacBook Neo is a big deal for the price in the Apple… https://t.co/CQGEtl6cL6 pic.twitter.com/21GGwKYBMp— Windows Latest (@WindowsLatest) March 4, 2026 It sounds like a well-researched, informed takedown of the MacBook Neo. They argue that there are Windows laptops, specifically the ASUS Zenbook A14 and Galaxy Book4 Edge, with twice the RAM, better displays, more storage, and more ports for the same price. The only problem is it’s completely false—the A14 retails for $999, while the Galaxy Book 4 in question is a year old and still $900 on clearance. Here’s another one, posted as a quote-reply to a post about an HP laptop from an Apple account: more RAM, more storage, larger screen, touch screen, more pixels, numpad, more ports https://t.co/BZXiaZDp0d— Gregor 🌹🇪🇺🇦🇹 (@salingergregor) March 4, 2026 This machine with “more RAM, more storage, larger screen, touch screen, more pixels, numpad, more ports” is actually one of the best-selling Windows PCs at the MacBook Neo’s price range. It’s such a valid comparison; there was a similar one on hand at Apple’s experience event in New York. But it wasn’t to test performance; it was to show off Neo’s design, display, webcam, and audio advantages. Yes, 16GB of RAM is more than 8GB. Yes, 15.6 inches is bigger than 13 inches. But Apple didn’t build the MacBook Neo to compete spec-for-spec. The fact is, Windows laptops have had better specs than their MacBook counterparts forever. 32GB of RAM standard, 4K displays, and discrete graphics. The same influencers calling out specs on social media understand this, but they’re choosing to bend the truth for engagement. Take the bait If you were considering buying a MacBook Neo until you saw one of these posts, then it’s almost definitely the right machine for you. It wasn’t made for influencers. It’s an affordable MacBook built from the ground up for K-12 students, college kids, grandparents, and anyone who doesn’t know USB 2.0 from USB 3.2. Apple got it right. Macworld In the past I’ve wondered whether Apple is even able, let alone willing, to make and sell a genuinely cheap product. In the flurry of announcements last week, notably the launch of the MacBook Neo and iPhone 17e, I feel like I got my answer. It’s absolutely able, but more often than not, Apple simply isn’t willing. Let me begin by saying that I haven’t tried either product yet, and my opinion may change once I’ve got them into the testing labs. This isn’t a review. But on the most fundamental level, based on the top-level spec and design decisions alone, these two new products seem enormously, frustratingly contradictory. The one looks like a great value, with astute compromises made in sensible areas in order to achieve a low price tag. And the other refuses to dip properly into the budget realm, while stacking up a laundry list of limitations seemingly designed to nudge the customer into spending more on a better model. I wonder if you can tell which is which. Let’s begin, since the products were revealed in this order, with the iPhone 17e, Apple’s follow-up to last year’s unloved and lopsided iPhone 16e, which I spent a great deal of time with. The 16e replaced the popular iPhone SE as the cheapest entry in the company’s phone lineup, but was noticeably less cheap—a mid-market $599 compared to the SE’s budget $429. Despite this, the 16e was beset with small irritations, from the binned processor chip, screen notch, and single camera lens to the lack of MagSafe and, adding insult to injury, the choice of just two boring colors. The more naively optimistic of Apple’s fans may have thought the 17e would correct these issues, but it was never very likely. Things started somewhat promisingly, with the expected news that the 17e has a faster A19 processor and MagSafe, but the processor is still a binned version with fewer cores, while the 17e’s MagSafe is an older type that doesn’t get access to the latest charging speeds. It’s limited to 15W, whereas the iPhone 17 gets 25W, and even the iPhone 16 gets 22W. The largely antiquated camera setup hasn’t been meaningfully addressed, and although we get the pleasure of a third color option, it’s the feeblest and most washed-out pink I’ve seen since the iPhone 16. Whether or not you like that color in general, Soft Pink is unlikely to be your new favorite finish. I will concede that getting twice the storage as standard at no extra cost is a big improvement and much appreciated, but I simply can’t see that making up for the rest of the bad news. Or bad non-news, perhaps that should be. Now let’s turn to the MacBook Neo. This too is $599, but a $599 laptop is a very different proposition from a $599 smartphone. Right away, we can assign this to the budget segment. Chuck in the education discount and the Neo becomes a genuine budget option for students and schools, and a brilliant way to lead youngsters into the Apple ecosystem. Of course, the Neo, like the 17e, cuts corners in order to keep the price down. But on paper, they’re the right corners. They’re sensible choices driven by customer-centric thinking. And they don’t stop it from being a highly usable product with a premium feel and a solid, balanced spec list. Decisions made during the development of the iPhone 16e, and carried over into the 17e, were influenced by the need to make sure it supported Apple Intelligence. So we got a faster processor than we needed, and more RAM than we needed, and swinging cuts everywhere else. The Neo, by contrast, focuses on what the customer needs and can afford, and trims everything else. My colleague Felipe Esposito ranks those cuts according to their importance, and for many readers, the ones near the top of the list (Touch ID, RAM, Thunderbolt, Neural Accelerators) mean it won’t be the correct choice, as is perfectly understandable for any given entry in Apple’s range. But for the specific market it’s catering to, the Neo makes perfect sense. By contrast, I couldn’t work out who the iPhone 16e was for, and I don’t feel a lot more optimistic about the 17e. What would it look like if we applied that same philosophy to the iPhone? An “iPhone Neo” would likely prioritize the camera, the battery life, and the design, since those are the things most people care about, and make sacrifices in the processor and screen size. Slimness would be a very low consideration. And AI capabilities would be non-existent. It would be almost the opposite of the iPhone 17e. And it would be great. You may have heard the phrase “Apple tax” being bandied about in tech circles, but the term has never really been accurate. Samsung and Huawei make $1,000 phones, too. The difference is that, unlike those other companies, Apple doesn’t attempt to sell into every market, and has never had a lot of interest in the bargain basement. The company absolutely can make a budget product when it wants to, as we can see. It’s just that most of the time, it chooses not to. Impacted services included Google Cloud Support, Agent Assist, Vertex Gemini API and Dialogflow CX in US regions and the global endpoint. The issue persisted for a duration of 1 hour and 58 minutes. This is not the level of quality and reliability we strive to offer you, and we have taken immediate steps to improve the platform’s performance and availability. Root Cause This incident was caused by a configuration change to a safety filtering service that supports all Gemini models. For some specific requests, this created code paths that eventually led to service disruptions and capacity loss for the safety filtering service. Consequently, customers encountered overload (429 and 503) errors for their queries, with some users reporting elevated error rates for specific models in US regions. Remediation and Prevention Google engineers were alerted to the issue via our automated monitoring system on Friday, 27 February 2026 04:54 US/Pacific and immediately started an investigation. Apple is planning to launch an all-new "MacBook Ultra" model this year, featuring an OLED display, touchscreen, and a higher price point, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports. Gurman revealed the information in his latest "Power On" newsletter. While Apple has been widely expected to launch new M6-series MacBook Pro models with OLED displays, touchscreen functionality, and a new, thinner design in the fourth quarter of 2026 for some time, Gurman today turned that rumor on its head with the suggestion that this is an all-new kind of MacBook rather than a MacBook Pro. Instead of succeeding the newly announced M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros, the "MacBook Ultra" will be a new, top-tier Apple laptop. Gurman even suggested that these products may be called the "iPhone Ultra" and "AirPods Ultra." Apple's second-generation MacBook Neo will launch in 2027 and could feature a touchscreen, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple this week announced the MacBook Neo, an all-new entry-level Apple laptop that starts at $599, with education pricing at $499. The MacBook Neo is designed to compete with lower-cost Windows laptops and Chromebooks, while expanding the Mac lineup with a substantially more affordable option. Unlike every other Apple silicon Mac, the MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip originally developed for the iPhone 16 Pro. The machine features a colorful rounded design, a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with uniform iPad-style bezels rather than a notch, a color-matched Magic Keyboard, a mechanical trackpad, two USB-C ports, 8GB of memory, a headphone jack, a 1080p camera, dual mics, dual speakers with Spatial Audio, and a 16-hour battery life. In a report shared last year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo correctly said that the MacBook Neo would enter mass production in the fourth quarter of 2025, but would not feature a touchscreen. In the same report, he revealed some insights into the second-generation version of the device. Crucially, Kuo said that the second-generation MacBook Neo may feature a touchscreen. Apple's first touchscreen Mac is expected to launch later this year in the form of a new, high-end MacBook Pro with an OLED display and a new design. The device is specifically said to incorporate a touch panel that uses on-cell touch technology. On-cell touch technology integrates the touch sensors directly into the display panel's top layer (the "cell") rather than requiring a separate, dedicated touch layer, to reduce thickness. Following the launch of this device and the adoption of touch support in macOS 27, it would make sense for other MacBooks with the feature to follow. Many other laptops from HP, Lenovo, Acer, and ASUS that now rival the MacBook Neo already feature touchscreens. As of September 2025, specifications for the second-generation MacBook Neo were still under discussion, according to Kuo. A faster chip such as the A19 Pro is highly likely. Apple's upcoming "HomePad" will offer a magnetic snap-to-wall feature and more, according to the leaker and prototype collector known as "Kosutami." In a new post on X, Kosutami said that one of the HomePad prototypes features a MagSafe-like snap-to-wall capability, along with doorbell integration. It is said to be heavily reliant on Apple Intelligence. They apparently saw this prototype in person. Apple has reportedly been working on the device for several years, with the aim for it to serve as a centralized location for controlling smart home products, listening to music and podcasts, making video calls, and getting glanceable information like the weather and calendar events. The device is expected to have a 7-inch square display and a front-facing camera. Kosutami told MacRumors that while the name "HomePad" is being used internally, it is not clear if that is the product name that will actually be used upon launch. Earlier this week, the leaker said that the HomePad is now set to arrive in the fall of 2026. In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that, following the introduction of the M5 MacBook Air, M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro, and MacBook Pro, Apple is preparing for further Mac refreshes to complete the 2026 lineup. These include an upgraded Mac Studio, which Gurman expects to arrive in the middle of 2026, followed by new iMac and Mac mini models. While the new Mac Studio and Mac mini "will look identical to the current iterations," the 2026 iMac will feature a "refreshed color palette." A new, high-end MacBook, potentially called the "MacBook Ultra," is expected to arrive around the end of the year. It will feature the Mac's first touchscreen and an OLED display.
