The MacBook Neo doesn’t officially support fast charging, but a beefier charger helps One of the compromises Apple lists for the MacBook Neo is that it doesn’t support fast charging, and the machine is supplied with just a 20W power adapter (except in Europe).
Based on Apple’s statement, there didn’t appear to be any point in using a beefier charger with the new machine, but tests reveal otherwise …

Can MacBook Neo charge faster with a better charger? Macworld
If you buy a MacBook Neo, you’ll get a 20W USB-C Power Adapter, the smallest charger of any Apple laptop. Apple sells higher-wattage adapters ranging from 35 watts up to 140 watts, and you can find third-party adapters with more features. The Neo’s charger is clunky and has just one port, so most people who buy one will likely use a different adapter that delivers more power.
However, the MacBook Neo doesn’t officially support fast charging like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Apple never mentioned fast charging during its Apple Experience on March 4, and Apple’s support document about MacBook fast charging also doesn’t include the Neo.
So it shouldn’t matter what kind of charger you use with the MacBook Neo. But we wanted to make sure there’s no difference if a higher-wattage adapter is used on the Neo. We tried charging a Neo’s battery at 20 percent to see how much it would gain in 30 minutes using Apple’s 96W USB-C Power Adapter and the bundled 20W USB-C Power Adapter. Here are the results.
ChargerChange after 30 minutes20W USB-C Power Adapter+15%96W USB-C Power Adapter+30%
That’s… not the same. It also doesn’t fit Apple’s definition of fast charging, which is up to 50 percent battery in around 30 minutes. So we did some digging.
Below are screenshots of the Battery Health 2 app, which I used to take a look at the charging rates. The shot on the left is with the 96W charger; the right shot is with the 20W charger. In the section labeled “Charging With,” the 96W charger was at twice the rate of the 20W charger. While on The Full Nerd podcast, we plugged in a 250-watt charger, and the rate was similar to the 96W charger. It appears that the charging rate for the MacBook Neo is capped at around 24 Watts if you use a charger that’s faster than the bundled 20W charger.
MacBook Neo charging with a 96W charger (left) and a 20W charger (right).Foundry
So, based on these results, you can get a faster charging speed if you use a higher-wattage charger. But you don’t get the “50 percent in 30 minutes” that Apple touts with the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro fast charging, which is probably why they don’t promote it as fast-charging capable.

$599 MacBook Neo Available for Same-Day Pickup at Apple Stores Wednesday is the official launch day of Apple's low-cost MacBook Neo, and as customers who pre-ordered begin to receive their purchases, Apple has also started in-store sales for the new laptop, along with a host of other new products it announced last week.
Customers across Europe, Asia and other regions can now place an order on Apple's website or in the Apple Store app and arrange for in-store pickup at a local retail location.
A quick spot check on the U.K. Apple online store suggests that most stores in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have available stock for customers today, although there are bound to be exceptions, with availability also running on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Apple has yet to update its online store for customers in the United States and Canada, but that will change in the next few hours, when in-store availability across North America will become clear.
To order a product with Apple Store pickup, add the product to your bag on Apple.com, proceed to checkout, select the "I'll pick it up" option, enter your ZIP code, choose an available Apple Store location, and select a pickup date. Payment is completed online, and a valid government-issued photo ID and the order number may be required upon pickup.
The MacBook Neo starts at $599, and is powered by the A18 Pro chip first introduced in the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024. It's the first Mac to use an iPhone-class chip. Apple says it delivers up to 50% faster everyday performance than the bestselling PC with Intel's latest Core Ultra 5 processor.
It features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2,408 × 1,506 resolution, 500 nits of brightness, and an anti-reflective coating. The display uses uniform, iPad-style bezels instead of a notch, and the machine weighs 2.7 pounds and comes in Silver, Indigo, Blush, and Citrus, with matching keyboard accents and wallpapers.
Connectivity includes two USB-C ports – one USB-C 2 (up to 480 Mb/s) and one USB-C 3 (up to 10 Gb/s) – plus a headphone jack. Other features include 8GB of unified memory, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6, a 1080p camera, dual beamforming microphones, Spatial Audio speakers, and up to 16 hours of battery life.
The base model includes 256GB of storage and the Magic Keyboard for $599, while a $699 configuration adds 512GB of storage and Touch ID. Education pricing starts at $499.
Today also marks the launch of the iPhone 17e, MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, MacBook Air with M5 chip, iPad Air with M4 chip, new and updated Apple Studio Displays. In-store availability for these devices will vary depending on popularity, but overall we think the MacBook Neo is likely to be the star of the show today in retail stores worldwide.Related Roundup: MacBook NeoBuyer's Guide: MacBook Neo (Buy Now)Related Forum: MacBook NeoThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
A classic button remote for Apple TV—just $30 + free shipping Macworld
TL;DR: If you’ve never loved the Apple TV remote, this $29.95 Function101 Button Remote offers a simpler, more comfortable alternative.
Apple TV is great. The remote? That’s debatable.
Many Apple TV users have had that moment where the remote slips between couch cushions, flips upside down in your hand, or sends the cursor flying across the screen because you barely brushed the touchpad.
The Function101 Button Remote for Apple TV is a refreshingly simple alternative that brings back something many people actually miss: real buttons.
This remote is designed with a traditional layout. Instead of swiping and guessing where your finger landed, you get clearly labeled buttons for the actions you actually use—play, pause, menu, navigation, and more.
The remote uses infrared (IR) technology, which means it connects quickly and can also sync with your TV, soundbar, or receiver so you can control power, volume, and mute without juggling multiple remotes.
The Function101 remote works with all Apple TV models, including Apple TV 4K, and it offers a generous range of up to 39 feet.
There’s no voice control here—and for some people, that’s actually a bonus.
If the original Apple TV remote has never quite clicked for you, this $29.95 Button Remote upgrade with free shipping might make your streaming setup feel a lot more comfortable.

ASUS Executive Says MacBook Neo is 'Shock' to PC Industry On an earnings call today, an ASUS executive admitted that Apple's more affordable MacBook Neo is a "shock" to the PC industry (via PCMag). In the U.S., the MacBook Neo starts at just $599, or at an even lower $499 for college students.
"Given Apple's historically very premium pricing, launching such an affordable product is certainly a shock to the entire market," said ASUS's Chief Financial Officer Nick Wu, according to a transcript of the earnings call published by Seeking Alpha. His comment was translated to English by an interpreter who was present on the call.
Wu said the MacBook Neo has some limited specs, including only 8GB of RAM, and he believes this may impact the ability to use certain apps. However, MacBook Neo reviewer Patrick Tomasso played back 4K video in DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro, edited a photo in Adobe Lightroom, and used many tabs in Google Chrome on the laptop, all without issue. In fact, most if not all reviews praised the MacBook Neo's performance.
Wu believes that Apple seems to be positioning the MacBook Neo as a device that is more for "content consumption," like a tablet.
"Of course, it's not that it cannot do all the work, but considering user experience and those hardware limitations, the experience, I think, differs significantly from mainstream products," he said, according to the transcript.
Nevertheless, Wu said the PC industry is taking the MacBook Neo's introduction "very seriously."
"I believe all PC vendors, including upstream vendors like Microsoft, Intel and AMD, they're all taking this very seriously, seriously discussing how to compete with this product in the entire PC ecosystem," said Wu, per the transcript. "The entire PC system will launch corresponding products to compete with Apple."
Ultimately, he said the MacBook Neo's actual impact on the PC market remains to be seen.
"The final market competition outcome is hard to predict," he said. "We just need more time."
With the MacBook Neo launch underway, the clock is officially ticking.Related Roundup: MacBook NeoTag: AsusBuyer's Guide: MacBook Neo (Buy Now)Related Forum: MacBook NeoThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Microsoft Patch Tuesday, March 2026 Edition Microsoft Corp. today pushed security updates to fix at least 77 vulnerabilities in its Windows operating systems and other software. Why Apple Rejected a Clamshell-Style Foldable iPhone Apple considered but abandoned plans for a flip-style foldable iPhone because it didn't create compelling new use cases, according to Weibo leaker Instant Digital. Apple reportedly felt that it was an "unnecessary" design because the biggest selling point would have been its smaller size when folded.
The split at the middle also caused issues with internal space, limiting battery capacity and leaving less space for camera components. Apple would have had to compromise on the rear camera system. Instant Digital suggests that if Apple wanted a smaller iPhone, the company would introduce a smaller slab-style model instead.
There have been two distinct periods when rumors suggested Apple was considering an iPhone that folds in half like a clamshell. The first rumors surfaced years ago before reports shifted toward Apple's work on the larger book-style foldable iPhone that's coming in 2026, and the second came in February 2026 when rumors indicated Apple was once again evaluating the design.
It's not clear if Instant Digital is referring to the earlier rumors or the more recent rumors from February, but the wording suggests the latter.
Samsung has long had two foldable smartphone styles, offering both the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Flip, but smaller-sized iPhones have not done well. Apple had a 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and an iPhone 13 mini, but the device was discontinued after two generations because it sold poorly.
Given Apple's struggle to sell more compact iPhones like the iPhone mini, it may not be surprising that a clamshell-style foldable has been shelved for now.Tags: Foldable iPhone, iPhoneRelated Forum: iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Apple's Low-Cost iPhone 17e is Faster Than the Low-Cost MacBook Neo Apple is set to launch two new low-cost devices tomorrow, the iPhone 17e and the MacBook Neo. Both devices use A-series chips, which have historically been limited to the iPhone and iPad.
The MacBook Neo has Apple's A18 Pro chip inside, which was first used in the iPhone 16 Pro models, while the iPhone 17e has a newer A19 chip. Unsurprisingly, thanks to the newer chip, Apple's $599 iPhone outperforms the CPU in its $599 Mac.
The iPhone 17e earned a multi-core score of 9,241 on early Geekbench benchmarks, while the MacBook Neo earned a multi-core score of 8,668. Single-core chip results also favored the iPhone 17e, which earned a score of 3,607, while the Neo had a single-core score of 3,461.
Metal scores for the GPU were closer, with the MacBook Neo scoring between 30,000 and 31,400 the iPhone 17e earned scores ranging from 31,000 to 31,600.
Both the iPhone 17e and the MacBook Neo have the same 8GB RAM for Apple Intelligence support, and while that might not sound like enough for a Mac, early reviewers felt that 8GB RAM was sufficient for everyday light workloads.
The MacBook Neo is the first Mac that Apple has designed with an A-series chip instead of an M-series chip, and its benchmark results suggest that it is essentially an iPhone that runs macOS. It will be interesting to see how well the MacBook Neo sells given that its CPU performance trails Apple's low-cost iPhone.Related Roundups: iPhone 17e, MacBook NeoTag: iPhoneBuyer's Guide: iPhone 17e (Buy Now), MacBook Neo (Buy Now)Related Forums: MacBook Neo, iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

First MacBook Neo, iPhone 17e, and Studio Display XDR Orders Begin Arriving It's Wednesday, March 11 in Australia and New Zealand, which means it's the official launch day for all of the products Apple introduced last week, including the new low-cost MacBook Neo, the iPhone 17e, the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models, the Studio Display, the Studio Display XDR, the M4 iPad Air, and the M5 MacBook Air.
Apple fans who purchased one of the new devices will start receiving their orders in the next few hours, and will soon share photos and first impressions of the new MacBook Neo, iPhone 17e, and more on Reddit, the MacRumors forums, and other social networks.
If you've ordered one of the new products and it's been delivered, let us know your thoughts in the comments below and make sure to share some photos.
Since there are no Apple retail stores in New Zealand, customers in Australia are the first to be able to pick up their new device or make a purchase in an Apple Store. In-store stock in Australia will provide insight into what we can expect from other Apple locations worldwide, but we aren't expecting major shortages.
Some MacBook Neo models have delivery estimates that are a little over a week out, so that may be the most popular new product from this batch.
If you missed pre-ordering a MacBook Neo or one of Apple's other new devices, you should be able to visit an Apple retail location to pick one up on launch day. Other retailers like Target, Walmart, and Best Buy should also have stock, and carriers will have the iPhone 17e.
Following Australia and New Zealand, sales and deliveries of the MacBook Neo, new Studio Display models, iPhone 17e, and other products will begin in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and finally, North America.
Make sure to stay tuned to MacRumors, because we'll have hands-on and unboxing videos starting tomorrow.Related Roundups: iPhone 17e, Studio Display, MacBook NeoTag: iPhoneBuyer's Guide: iPhone 17e (Buy Now), Displays (Buy Now), MacBook Neo (Buy Now)Related Forums: Mac Accessories, MacBook Neo, iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

MacBook Neo Has Up to 8× Slower SSD Speeds Compared to New MacBook Pro While the MacBook Neo achieves a breakthrough $599 starting price, that of course comes with some compromises, and one of them is slower SSD speeds.
The Verge today said the MacBook Neo had up to 8× slower sustained SSD read and write speeds in a benchmark test compared to the new MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The site did not mention which tool it used to measure SSD speeds, but it was likely Blackmagic's Disk Speed Test or AmorphousDiskMark.
Here is a comparison of sustained SSD speeds, according to The Verge.
Mac (Chip/Capacity)
Read Speeds
Write Speeds
MacBook Neo (A18 Pro/256GB)1,735 MB/s1,684 MB/s
MacBook Air (M1/512GB)3,422 MB/s3,274 MB/s
MacBook Air (M5/1TB)7,049 MB/s7,480 MB/s
MacBook Pro (M5 Max/4TB)13.6 GB/s17.8 GB/s
The speeds for the M5 Max model came from The Verge's separate MacBook Pro review, and unfortunately storage capacities are not equal across the board.
With slower SSD speeds, transferring files to and from the MacBook Neo will take longer, but this is a non-issue for many customers. Even with a large 100 GB file, a transfer may take up to a minute with a MacBook Neo, rather than around 30 seconds with the latest MacBook Air, or 7-8 seconds with the latest MacBook Pro.
A slower SSD can also impact overall performance, since apps boot from the SSD, and because the MacBook Neo will temporarily use SSD space as virtual memory when the laptop's actual 8GB of RAM is fully used. But, the first MacBook Neo reviews have largely indicated that the laptop's performance is quite good nonetheless.
The average customer purchasing a MacBook Neo is probably not thinking about SSD speeds to begin with, and they will likely never notice any impact, but we have highlighted this information for customers who do care about this sort of thing.

Sonos Launches Two New Speakers With AirPlay 2 Support Sonos today launched two new speakers, the Sonos Play and the Sonos Era 100 SL. Sonos says that the additions to its lineup "reflect a renewed focus on strengthening the Sonos system" after a disastrous 2024 app redesign damaged customer trust.
The Sonos Play is a versatile speaker that can be used from room to room, and like most Sonos products, multiple speakers can be paired together. Sonos Play speakers connect to WiFi and can be grouped across multiple rooms or paired up for stereo sound.
There's an included charging base so the speaker can be used either at home or while on the go. The battery lasts for up to 24 hours, and it can also serve as a power bank for recharging an iPhone. The Sonos Play has IP67 waterproofing so it can be used poolside, at the beach, or in the shower.
When you're not at home, up to four Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers can be paired together over Bluetooth instead of WiFi using the Sonos Play app. Sound will be synced up, and Automatic Trueplay will adapt the audio to match the environment.
AirPlay 2 support is included, so Sonos Play speakers can be used alongside other AirPlay 2 speakers for multi-room or multi-device audio using Apple's technology.
The Era 100 SL is a simpler speaker that's meant to ease people into the Sonos ecosystem. It features a microphone-free design and fewer features to help keep the price lower. It can be used alone or paired with other Sonos speakers over time, and it also supports AirPlay 2.
The Sonos Play and Sonos Era 100 SL can be pre-ordered from the Sonos website starting today, with a launch to follow on March 31, 2026. The Sonos Play is $299, while the Sonos Era 100 SL is $189.Tag: SonosThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

We see cut-price deals on iPads all year round, although at certain times of the year deals are better than at others. If you want to pay less for an iPad we can help you find the best deals on every iPad right now, including the iPad mini, iPad Pro, the standard ‘iPad’ and the M4 iPad Air (which arrived in March 2026). We know where to look and we know how to spot a really good iPad deal because we track the prices all the time.
We also have a guide to the best Apple deals right now on all Apple products, including MacBook Air deals, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, iPhone and Apple Watch.
How we find the best iPad deals
Britta O’Boyle
We identify the best iPad deals by combining our expert knowledge of Apple’s product lineup (which we have throughly review, and use daily) with specialized tools that monitor prices across a wide range of retailers. By tracking discounts over time, we understand what truly great deals look like and can quickly spot offers that deliver exceptional value.
In assessing deals, we look beyond the price tag to consider overall value. For example, while the M5 iPad Pro is a premium device, a substantial discount on a slightly older model may provide better value for many users. Likewise, we may highlight a strong deal on a basic iPad, pointing out that it can handle most everyday tasks for a fraction of the cost of a Pro model.
Because we understand Apple’s current iPad lineup, the features of previous generations, and what’s expected from future models, we’re well equipped to advise you on which iPad to buy and the best price to pay for it.
Our process for identifying the top deals involves several key steps:
We use specialized tools: We have tools that allow us to see the best deals across multiple resellers at any given time.
Tracking historical prices: We track discounts and price drops throughout the year, so we know each model’s all-time low price. This helps us distinguish a genuine deal from a price that just looks good.
Leveraging product expertise: Our extensive knowledge of the entire iPad lineup, including past generations and future expectations, allows us to assess the true value of a deal. For example, we consider whether a discount on an older model is significant enough to justify missing out on features available in a newer version.
Monitoring key retailers: We constantly watch major retailers like Amazon and Walmart for bargains, especially during major sales events like Prime Day and Black Friday.
We also have a guide to the best Apple deals right now on all Apple products, including MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, iPhone, and Apple Watch.
Is now a good time to buy a new iPad?
We recommend reading the advice below to understand whether Apple is likely to update the iPad you’re considering. This can help you avoid purchasing an iPad shortly before a new model is released – a situation that often leads to regret, not only because a better version arrives, but also because retailers typically discount older models once an update occurs. However, if you’re hoping to get a deal on the newest model, be prepared to wait.
With that in mind, much of Apple’s iPad product line is due a refresh, with rumors indicating that a new iPad, iPad mini and iPad Air could be in the pipeline this year.
Brady Snyder / Foundry
Here’s a breakdown of the current iPad models to help you decide if now is the right time for you to buy:
iPad (A16): This is the cheapest iPad you can buy new from Apple, starting at a budget-friendly $349/£329 for the 128GB model. It was updated in March 2025, at which point Apple doubled the storage at the entry level without reducing the price, making it even better value for money. But there are important factors to consider. While the A16 chip delivers solid performance for daily activities, such as web browsing, streaming, light gaming, it doesn’t support Apple Intelligence (the suite of AI-powered features available on other current Apple products), plus the screen isn’t as high quality as the other iPads. A successor is not anticipated until mid-to-late 2026, so I you are looking for a bargain now then you can be confident that it won’t be replaced immediately. However, if you want to ensure that your iPad is future-proofed we’d recommend waiting or spending a little more to get an alternative iPad.
iPad mini (A17 Pro): The current model was released in October 2024 and was a significant upgrade, featuring Apple’s A17 Pro chip. This processor is powerful enough to support Apple Intelligence features, future-proofing the device for upcoming software innovations. The base model now starts with 128GB of storage, a welcome increase from the 64GB offered in previous generations. While the current iPad mini is a solid buy, there are rumors about a future model. Internal code leaks suggest a potential future update to an A19 Pro chip, which would offer a performance boost. However, we don’t expect an update until mid-to-late 2026 and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend buying the current model at a good price.
iPad Air (M4): The current models, which feature the powerful M4 chip, were released in March 2026. We think the M4 iPad Air is the best choice for most people, striking a perfect balance between performance and price. It offers superb processing power, a premium lightweight design, and great battery life, making it a versatile device for everything from streaming and gaming to more demanding work. If you need a new iPad now we recommend the iPad Air as a great buy.
iPad Pro (M5): Now is an excellent time to buy a new iPad Pro; the current models with the M5 chip arrived in October 2025 and it is not expected to be updated again for at least a year, possibly not until 2027. The iPad Pro offers the most up-to-date technology on the ultimate iPad. Indeed, the M5 iPad Pro is considered the best tablet on the market, featuring a stunning Tandem OLED display, outstanding performance, and a super slim, lightweight design.
Release dates and expected refreshes aside, if you are wondering if there is a good time to shop for deals on a new iPad that’s a little more straightforward. The best time of year to get a deal is when the big sales happen, such as Black Friday in November or Amazon Prime Day sales in July and October. There may also be a Spring Big Deals event on Amazon. Those are when we see the biggest discounts, but if you can’t wait for one of those sales, don’t despair: we see price drops all year round and when we see a good deal we record it here.
Does Apple have sales?
The deals rarely come from Apple itself. While Apple will sometimes offer vouchers as an incentive to buy a new iPad (that’s Apple’s usual Black Friday giveaway), the company never discounts prices. Apple does sell refurbished iPads at a lower price though, so that might be something to consider.
If you are a student you can take advantage of Apple’s education discounts and save a little money on the full price of iPads (and Macs). And in the summer months Apple gives away Apple Pencils or AirPods with the sale of certain iPads (and Macs) to students in it’s Higher Education Sale.
Apple gives away vouchers for Black Friday and some times as part of a “Back To School” sale in the summer months.Apple
Best refurbished iPad deals
The deals you will see above are generally from Apple resellers rather than Apple itself, which very rarely drops the prices. Apple does, however, sell reconditioned iPads in its Certified Refurbished store. So you might be able to grab a bargain.
The iPads in Apple’s refurbished store may be ex-display stock, or they may have been returned to Apple due to a fault, but they are fully reconditioned now and come with a full year’s warranty. It’s not like buying secondhand.

Macworld’s top 5 tips for finding the best iPad deal
When you are searching for a deal keep the following points in mind and you should be happy with your purchase.
Check the storage: Some older iPads only had 32GB or 64GB storage. We don’t think that’s enough. The good news is that Apple’s current iPad line up has 128GB storage or more, so, unless you are buying an older model, this won’t be an issue. Just make sure that if you see a deal on an old model with less storage it is priced accordingly. Some of the best deals are on higher capacity iPads.
You probably don’t need cellular: You might intend to use your iPad when you are out and about. In that case spending more to get a model with cellular might appeal. Our opinion is that you can just hotspot from your iPhone to get on the internet from your iPad. You won’t need to pay for a data contract and your’ll also save yourself money on the price of the iPad itself. Check the deal you are looking at isn’t for a cellular model because a non-cellular deal will be even better!
Consider refurbished: If you want a bargain and don’t mind that it’s not the latest model buying a refurbished iPad can be a great way to save money. We recommend using Apple’s refurbished store because every product is throughly tested before being sold, and you get a one year warranty with it. If you want to save more money, companies like BackMarket and Declutter. There’s more information about buying a refurbished iPad below.
Shop around: If you want a deal then don’t shop at Apple! The best deals come from the various resellers who often battle it our to undercut each others prices for Apple products. Amazon is usually the best, but make sure to check the likes of Walmart, B&H and Best Buy in the U.S., and AO, Argos, Currys in the U.K. We have a list of the best places to buy an iPad below.
Wait, if you can: If it’s not Black Friday or an Amazon Prime Sale keep in mind that there could be even better bargains coming. Also, if Apple is likely to be announcing new products soon, be aware that it may mean that the current range will soon be discounted even more.
Apple
Which iPad should you buy?
The answer to this question really depends on what you need your iPad for.
I want the cheapest iPad you can buy
Consider the standard iPad. The cheapest iPad is the 128GB A16 iPad, which costs from $349 / £329. It’s a good option if you are likely your iPad is destined for general use, such as emails, one taking, web browsing, social networks, watching movies and reading books. It’s got a great sized screen and is light enough to pop in a bag and not feel weighed down.
The iPad A16 is good, as long as you don’t mind the lack of Apple IntelligenceBritta O’Boyle
I’m for an iPad to use instead of a computer
If you are just planning to edit documents and spreadsheets, any iPad can be a good supplement for a computer. If you need something with a little more power then the iPad Air or iPad Pro might be a better option. Apple and other companies sell iPad cases that come with built in keyboards, so you can turn your iPad into a laptop. Read our round up of the best iPad keyboards.
Foundry
I want an iPad that won’t weigh too much
The iPad mini is a great choice if you value portability and power. Its compact 8.3-inch screen and is the lightest iPad you can get (weighing around 0.65 pound or 293g). This makes it perfect for travelers, commuters, or anyone who values a device that can easily fit in a bag or even a large pocket.
If you need a bigger screen the iPad Air is a good choice. The 11-inch iPad Air weighs just over 1 pound or 462g and is 6.1mm thick, making it comfortable to hold for extended periods and easy to take anywhere. What may surprise you is that the newest 11-inch iPad Pro is actually lighter and thinner than the 11-inch Air, at 444g and 5.3mm thick.
Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry
I want an iPad to use for gaming
If you are wanting to play the latest games on your iPad then the iPad Pro may be the one to choose. Other iPads will be able to play casual games, but to be sure of getting the power and graphics prowess necessary to play the latest games. The iPad Pro also offers a better screen with the 120Hz refresh rates that serious gamers will want.
However, even the A17 Pro chip in the iPad mini ensures that the latest games and apps run smoothly, making it a powerful portable console. The Liquid Retina display is sharp and vibrant, with the highest pixel density of any current iPad.
I want an iPad so I can draw
The iPad is a great device for artists. Any iPad, accompanied with an Apple Pencil or other iPad stylus, will allow you to draw using an app such as Adobe’s Sketchpad (now called Adobe Fresco) which can be used for free, but has in-app purchases.
If you are really serious about your art you may prefer an iPad Pro though, and you may even consider the nano-texture display option for less glare and reflections.
Petter Ahrnstedt

Claude AI Finds Bugs In Microsoft CTO's 40-Year-Old Apple II Code An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Register: AI can reverse engineer machine code and find vulnerabilities in ancient legacy architectures, says Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich, who used his own Apple II code from 40 years ago as an example. Russinovich wrote: "We are entering an era of automated, AI-accelerated vulnerability discovery that will be leveraged by both defenders and attackers."
In May 1986, Russinovich wrote a utility called Enhancer for the Apple II personal computer. The utility, written in 6502 machine language, added the ability to use a variable or BASIC expression for the destination of a GOTO, GOSUB, or RESTORE command, whereas without modification Applesoft BASIC would only accept a line number. Russinovich had Claude Opus 4.6, released early last month, look over the code. It decompiled the machine language and found several security issues, including a case of "silent incorrect behavior" where, if the destination line was not found, the program would set the pointer to the following line or past the end of the program, instead of reporting an error. The fix would be to check the carry flag, which is set if the line is not found, and branch to an error.
The existence of the vulnerability in Apple II type-in code has only amusement value, but the ability of AI to decompile embedded code and find vulnerabilities is a concern. "Billions of legacy microcontrollers exist globally, many likely running fragile or poorly audited firmware like this," said one comment to Russinovich's post.

Apple's New MacBooks Have a Keyboard Change You Might Have Missed The new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models feature a keyboard change that was easy to miss during Apple's announcements last week.
The new U.S. English keyboard layout
On the U.S. English version of the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro keyboards, the tab, caps lock, shift, return, and delete keycaps now have glyphs on them. On previous-generation models, these keys are labeled with text instead.
This change was spotted by "Mr. Macintosh" last week, and it extends to the MacBook Neo.
The previous U.S. English keyboard layout
Given the U.S. English keyboard layout is the default option for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Neo models sold in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, this change effectively extends to those countries and a few others.
If you live in Europe, this will look familiar to you. Apple has long showed glyphs on the tab, caps lock, shift, return, and delete keycaps on its keyboard layouts for British English and other European languages, so this is nothing new there.

MacBook Neo ports explained: The right USB-C port to use Macworld
Once you’ve unboxed your MacBook Neo, it’s important to know that the two ports on the side are not equal in terms of ability. While both are equal when it comes to the charging function, the USB 3 port is best for data transfer, while the second USB 2 should be used for charging. In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about MacBook Neo wired connectivity, including how to know which MacBook Neo port to use.
At a glance: How to use MacBook Neo ports
Rear port, closest to the hinge (USB 3, 10Gbps): Use for displays, hubs, storage, and data transfer
Front port (USB 2, 480Mbps): Use for charging or low-speed accessories
We recommend: Apple MacBook Neo

Why the two MacBook Neo USB-C ports are different
Apple
Apple lists the MacBook Neo’s ports as:
One USB 3 (USB-C) port, at 10Gbps, with support for:
Charging
DisplayPort
USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s)
and
One USB 2 (USB-C) port, at 480Mbps, with support for:
Charging
USB 2 (up to 480Mb/s)
The USB-C port closest to the hinge is the 10Gbps “USB 3” port. According to Apple, this is good for “Charging” and “DisplayPort”.
By “DisplayPort” Apple means this port is powerful enough to connect to a USB-C monitor. It can also be used for general data transfer tasks so is great for adding storage drives such as USB-C thumb drives, SSDs, card readers or other video connections such as HDMI.
The second USB-C port on the Neo is less able—a lot less when it comes to data transfers. It’s just as useful for charging the Neo but its “USB 2” bandwidth is just 480Mbps (megabits per second).
To put that in perspective, 480Mbps is 21 times slower than the 10Gbps port; 83 times slower than Thunderbolt 4, and 160 times slower than Thunderbolt 5.
Because charging works the same on both ports, it usually makes sense to use the slower USB-2 port for charging and keep the faster USB-3 port free for accessories.
How MacBook Neo ports compare to MacBook Air and Pro
The ports on the MacBook Neo may be enough for your needs, but if they aren’t then the more expensive MacBook Air and MacBook Pro both boast Thunderbolt ports. These Thunderbolt ports look identical to USB-C ports and are compatible with that standard.
The Air features two Thunderbolt 4 ports, which each have a data-transfer bandwidth of 40 Gbps (gigabits per second); the plain M5 MacBook Pro also has Thunderbolt 4 ports, although three of them rather than the Air’s two.
The M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro boast three Thunderbolt 5 ports, which have a bandwidth of 80Gbps and a boost potential of 120Gbps for high-end video connections.
The Neo’s data-transfer 10Gbps potential looks weedy in comparison: four times slower than Thunderbolt 4 and eight times slower than Thunderbolt 5. But 10Gbps is plenty fast enough for most of us not engaged in pro video editing or other demanding data-transfer tasks.
Also note that both the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro also feature a MagSafe 3 charging port that is used for charging only, freeing up the Thunderbolt ports for data tasks.

What to plug into the faster USB-3 port
Use the Neo’s 10Gbps USB-C port to connect a hub such as the Anker 555 if you want to really upgrade your port options.Anker/Amazon
Your best bet if planning on adding extras, such as an external monitor, or a storage drive, is to buy a USB-C hub that will add up to 12 additional ports via one connection to the MacBook Neo’s USB-3 capable port; check out our reviews of the best USB-C hubs for MacBook for our recommendations.
Some adapters and hubs also offer an Ethernet port if you want to hook up to a wired network.
You can also buy a USB-C to HDMI cable if your chosen external monitor doesn’t support a direct USB-C connection.
Anker
What to plug into the slower USB-2 port
This should be the port you use for charging, keeping your other port free for other accessories. When not charging you can use this port for low-power accessories.
You can attach a storage drive to this port, but it will be much slower than if you use the alternative 10Gbps port.
You can’t attach a monitor to this port: Apple warns you off using the front port to connect to a monitor.
Foundry
Other considerations: Get a better Power Adapter
The Neo comes with Apple’s 20W Power Adapter—although U.K. and E.U. purchasers don’t even get that in the box. Apple knows it’s not a great charger, because it doesn’t offer it as an individual buy on the Apple Store.
20W is pretty puny, and even though Apple doesn’t list a fast-charging feature for the Neo, we expect it can handle more power input so buy a better charger should be one of your first accessory buys. We will be testing the Neo’s faster-charging potential soon. In the meantime, you can find the best USB-C chargers for MacBook that have gone through our labs.

Studio Display XDR White Paper Reveals New Color System and Future Calibration Feature Apple's newly published Studio Display XDR Technology Overview white paper reveals two notable display technologies: a forthcoming Full Calibration feature and a new color measurement model called Apple CMF 2026.
According to the document, a future macOS update will introduce Full Calibration, a feature that allows users to recalibrate key display characteristics using professional measurement equipment. Apple says Full Calibration will adjust the white point, primary color coordinates, luminance, and gamma response of the display when used with a compatible spectroradiometer. The feature is not available at launch.
The functionality is aimed at professional color workflows, allowing the display to be recalibrated at the hardware level to maintain accuracy over time or match specific production environments. Apple currently ships each Studio Display XDR with factory calibration, alongside a set of reference presets designed for common color standards.
The white paper also introduces Apple CMF 2026, a new system Apple developed to improve how displays are measured and calibrated. Most display calibration today relies on the long-standing CIE 1931 color matching functions, a model created nearly a century ago to represent how humans perceive color.
Apple says Apple CMF 2026 addresses limitations in the CIE 1931 model that can cause displays to look slightly different even when they are calibrated to the same standard. According to the company, the new system improves visual consistency by more closely matching how colors actually appear to the human eye.
Each Studio Display XDR is individually calibrated using Apple CMF 2026 at the factory. However, Apple continues to support the traditional CIE 1931 system through its reference presets to maintain compatibility with existing professional workflows.
Apple says it is also working with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) to help develop a broader industry standard based on this research, with the goal of improving color consistency across displays from different manufacturers. The Studio Display XDR is the first Apple display to support Apple CMF 2026.Related Roundup: Studio DisplayBuyer's Guide: Displays (Buy Now)Related Forum: Mac AccessoriesThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
