Apple blocks iOS 26.2 and iPadOS 26.2 beta installs on devices with the C1 modem Following the release of the first developer betas of iOS 26.2 and iPadOS 26.2 earlier this week, Apple is now preventing the update from being installed on devices with the C1 modem. Here are the details.

Apple Stops Signing iOS 26.2 Beta 1 for iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and Cellular M5 iPad Pro A day after seeding the first developer betas of iOS 26.2 and iPadOS 26.2, Apple has stopped signing it for the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and cellular models of the new M5 iPad Pro, preventing those devices from installing the update.
The exact reason for the change is unknown, but all three devices use either the C1 or C1X modem, Apple's new custom cellular chips, so it's possible Apple has identified a specific bug related to iOS 26.2 and iPadOS 26.2 with that chip and is preventing users who have yet to update from being affected by it.
The updates will continue to show for users on those devices enrolled in the iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 developer beta programs, but the updates will now fail to install.
It's unknown how long it will take for Apple to address whatever issue it has discovered, at which time we should see revised developer betas for these C1 and C1X devices.
Update: Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach notes that his cellular M5 iPad Pro experienced an issue with the update that forced his device into recovery mode, where he was able to restore it to iPadOS 26.1Related Roundups: iOS 26, iPadOS 26Related Forum: iOS 26This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple's 2026 Smart Home Revamp: All the Rumors It's been over a decade since Apple's HomeKit smart home platform launched, and it is overdue for an update. HomeKit and the Home app can no longer keep up with AI-powered solutions from other companies like Google and Amazon, but that's set to change with a smart home revamp that Apple has planned for 2026.
Home Hub
Apple is working on a home hub or "command center" that will serve as a centralized location for controlling smart home products, listening to music, making video calls, getting the weather, looking things up with Siri, displaying photos, making notes, viewing calendar events, and more.
The device has an all-display design that resembles an iPad, with a 7-inch display. It's said to be similar in size and shape to two iPhones placed side-by-side, but Apple is designing two variants. The first version is designed to be mounted on a wall, while the second version has a speaker base that looks similar to a HomePod mini and can be placed on a desktop or countertop.
The home hub will have its own operating system, and while there won't be an App Store, Apple apps will be available as widgets.
Built-in sensors will be able to determine when someone is near the home hub, and the features displayed will change based on presence. If no one is by the hub, it might show information like the time and temperature, but if someone approaches, it could shift to an interface for adjusting the temperature.
Presence detection will enable features like turning on the lights when someone enters the room, and it might also be able to tell one person from another. The home hub will play music, and it does have a camera that can be used for video calls.
Touch-based interactions will be available for widgets, but the hub will be heavily reliant on Siri voice commands. Siri could have a personified look on the hub, with one design described as a version of the Mac Finder icon.
While screen-based smart home devices like the Echo Show are available for under $200, Apple could price the home hub somewhere around $350. Price could vary for the version with the speaker base and the wall mounted version without it.
Apple is aiming to launch the home hub sometime in the March to April 2026 timeframe.
LLM Siri
Apple has held off on launching the home hub because it is waiting to debut the smarter, more capable version of Siri that's been in the works since Apple Intelligence features launched in iOS 18. The original plan was for a better version of Siri to come out in an iOS 18 update, but Apple decided Siri just wasn't good enough to do what it wanted.
Siri was delayed so Apple could overhaul the underlying architecture that powers the personal assistant. The new Siri will be more similar to ChatGPT or Claude than the Siri of today, incorporating large language models to answer complex queries and complete more complicated tasks.
Here's what Apple originally promised Siri would be able to do with Apple Intelligence:
Personal Context
With personal context, Siri will be able to keep track of emails, messages, files, photos, and more, learning more about you to help you complete tasks and keep track of what you've been sent.
Show me the files Eric sent me last week.
Find the email where Eric mentioned ice skating.
Find the books that Eric recommended to me.
Where's the recipe that Eric sent me?
What's my passport number?
Onscreen Awareness
Onscreen awareness will let Siri see what's on your screen and complete actions involving whatever you're looking at. If someone texts you an address, for example, you can tell Siri to add it to their contact card. Or if you're looking at a photo and want to send it to someone, you can ask Siri to do it for you.
Deeper App Integration
Deeper app integration means that Siri will be able to do more in and across apps, performing actions and completing tasks that are just not possible with the personal assistant right now. We don't have a full picture of what Siri will be capable of, but Apple has provided a few examples of what to expect.
Moving files from one app to another.
Editing a photo and then sending it to someone.
Get directions home and share the ETA with Eric.
Send the email I drafted to Eric.
This summer, Apple software engineering chief Craig Federighi said that transitioning Siri to new architecture was a success, and that the personal assistant is going to be an even bigger update than expected.
"The work we've done on this end-to-end revamp of Siri has given us the results we needed," Federighi told employees. "This has put us in a position to not just deliver what we announced, but to deliver a much bigger upgrade than that we envisioned."
Apple decided to use AI technology from Google, so Siri will in part be powered by a Google Gemini model that Google designed for Apple. Siri will be as capable as Gemini since it is using the same underlying technology, but Apple will run the model on its own Private Cloud Compute server with no information provided to Google.
The new version of Siri is expected to be ready for an iOS 26.4 update planned for the same March or April timeframe rumored for the home hub.
HomePod mini and Apple TV
We're supposed to be getting updated versions of the HomePod mini and the Apple TV at some point between now and early 2026.
Both devices will get chip upgrades, and in the case of the Apple TV, it could gain support for some Apple Intelligence features. New Apple-designed networking chips will be included, but neither device is going to get a design update.
The HomePod mini and the Apple TV are linked to Apple's smart home platform and serve as smart home hubs for Matter, the cross-platform protocol that opens up the number of smart home accessories that are compatible with HomeKit.
Apple Security Cameras
Rumors suggest that Apple is designing its own indoor security cameras that will connect to HomeKit and interface with the planned home hub.
Cameras designed directly by Apple would offer unique integrations with Apple devices, and would offer greater privacy than competing devices because of Apple's dedication to privacy and security. The first cameras could come out as soon as late 2026, and we could see other accessories like doorbells follow.

iOS 26.2 Adds Safari Search Engine Choice Screen in Japan Ahead of New Law With iOS 26.2, Apple is adding a prompt that allows iPhone users in Japan to select a preferred search engine. As noted on Reddit, the option to choose a search engine comes up after installing iOS 26.2 for the first time.
iPhone users in Japan can select from Bing, Google, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo Japan, or Ecosia, the same options available globally in the Safari settings. In most other countries, Google is the default search engine and there is no prompt to choose a different option when the iPhone first starts up.
While iPhone users outside of Japan can choose one of the other options, doing so requires going into the Safari section of the Settings app to make a change. According to court documents, Google pays Apple roughly $20 billion per year to be the default search engine on Apple devices, which helps to explain why Apple does not offer an up-front choice in most countries.
Japan recently established guidelines that say Apple has to present a neutral choice screen for selecting a search engine during initial setup, hence the new functionality. While Google is the dominant search engine in many countries, Yahoo Japan is widely used in the country.
iOS 26.2 also appears to include support for installing alternative app marketplaces in Japan, which is also required by the Japan Fair Trade Commission's Mobile Software Competition Act. Japan's new rules go into effect on December 18, 2025, which is around the time that iOS 26.2 will see a public launch.Tag: JapanThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Report: Apple to pay Google $1B a year to provide Siri’s updated AI brain Macworld
A new report from Bloomberg says that Apple is finalizing a deal in which it will pay Google about a billion dollars a year to use its AI technology as the foundation for the long-overdue new Siri.
The new model is essentially a customized version of Google’s Gemini LLM, according to Mark Gurman’s report. Apple reportedly evaluated Claude and ChatGPT earlier this year and zeroed in on Google to create an LLM based on its Gemini model.
The version Apple will employ will have 1.2 trillion parameters, in comparison to the 150 billion parameters of the cloud-based Apple Intelligence model used today. The number of parameters is one measure of the size and complexity of an AI model, but not the only one. It’s not clear how many parameters are in today’s leading LLMs like Gemini 2.5 Pro or ChatGPT 5, as most of the leading AI developers have stopped publishing such details. According to estimates, a 1.2-trillion parameter model would be well in line with the leading AI models today.
Apple still intends to use its own technology in the future. This deal is said to be an interim solution until the homemade Siri model is good enough to replace it.
This new Gemini model will handle Siri’s summarizer and planner functions—the parts that allow Siri to understand what is being asked of it and how it should execute tasks. Some Siri functions would still use Apple’s in-house models, it is claimed. The partnership may be short-lived, however. Apple’s team is said to already be working on a 1 trillion parameter model that it hopes to have ready for public use “as early as next year,” and Apple execs believe they can match the quality of Google’s custom Gemini model.
The big Gemini model will run on Apple’s own Private Cloud Compute hardware rather than Google’s servers, so Apple can ensure user privacy and that no user data ever gets into Google (or anyone else’s) hands. In China, where most Google technology is banned, the new Siri will in-house models with a custom filter that adjusts content to comply with Chinese government demands.
The new Siri is still said to be scheduled for release in the spring, with Apple aiming to bring it to users in the OS 26.4 releases, which usually arrive in March.

Apple's New Siri Will Be Powered By Google Gemini The smarter, more capable version of Siri that Apple is developing will be powered by Google Gemini, reports Bloomberg. Apple will pay Google approximately $1 billion per year for a 1.2 trillion parameter artificial intelligence model that was developed by Google.
For context, parameters are a measure of how a model understands and responds to queries. More parameters generally means more capable, though training and architecture are also factors. Bloomberg says that Google's model "dwarfs" the parameter level of Apple's current models.
The current cloud-based version of Apple Intelligence uses 150 billion parameters, but there are no specific metrics detailing how the other models Apple is developing measure up.
Apple will use Gemini for functions related to summarizing and multi-step task planning and execution, but Apple models will also be used for some Siri features. The AI model that Google is developing for Apple will run on Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers, so Google will not have access to Apple data.
Gemini uses a Mixture-of-Experts architecture, so while it has over a trillion total parameters, only a fraction of them are activated for each query. The architecture allows for a large total compute capacity without racking up significant processing costs.
Apple weighed using its own AI models for the LLM version of Siri, and also tested options from OpenAI and Anthropic, but it decided to go with Gemini after deciding Anthropic's fees were too high. Apple already has a partnership with Google for search results, with Google paying Apple around $20 billion per year to be the default search engine option on Apple devices.
Though Apple is planning to rely on Google AI for now, it plans to continue working on its own models and will transition to an in-house solution when its LLMs are capable enough. Apple is already working on a 1 trillion parameter cloud-based model that could be ready as soon as 2026. Apple is unlikely to publicize its arrangement with Google while it develops in-house models.
Apple was meant to debut an updated version of Siri in iOS 18, but deficiencies required the company to overhaul the underlying Siri architecture and significantly delay the rollout. The smarter Apple Intelligence Siri is expected to be introduced in an iOS 26.4 update that's coming in spring 2026.
Siri will be able to answer more complex queries and complete more complicated tasks in and between apps. It will be closer in function to Claude and ChatGPT, though Apple is not planning a dedicated chatbot app.Tags: Apple Intelligence, Gemini, Google, SiriThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Google Agrees to Make Major Play Store Changes to Settle Epic Games Antitrust Lawsuit Google has proposed sweeping changes to its Play Store and Android to end an ongoing antitrust dispute with Epic Games. The two companies filed a joint settlement agreement with the court last night, and if approved, Apple will be left as the only company embroiled in a public antitrust fight with Epic.
Google will allow Android app developers to use alternative payment methods in apps or through external links instead of forcing them to use Google Play Billing. Google is supporting Registered App Stores, which are alternative app stores that can be easily installed alongside Google Play. Epic Games would be a Registered App Store, able to be installed on Android devices to offer its own catalog of app titles.
As for fees, Google will charge a maximum of 9 percent or 20 percent based on transaction type, with the lowered fees applicable worldwide instead of solely in the United States. Google can charge a fee for transactions completed using alternative payment methods, and it is also able to charge an additional fee for transactions processed by Google Play Billing.
The wording around fees is complicated and could be somewhat open to interpretation for virtual items in games. Google can charge a 20 percent fee for in-game purchases providing more than a de minimis gameplay advantage, which would presumably be things like power ups, items that increase experience, or loot boxes.
Google can only charge a 9 percent fee for items that do not affect gameplay, such as additional levels, events, or Fortnite skins that are considered cosmetic. The 9 percent maximum fee is also applicable to in-app subscriptions, non-game app purchases, or up front app and game purchases. In a situation where there's a mixed bundle that includes in-game items like weapons and in-game skins, Google can charge the higher 20 percent rate. Google told The Verge that it would also charge a five percent fee for apps that choose to use the Google Play Billing system, which would be in addition to the 9 to 20 percent fee.
To simplify, the base fee for all apps will be 9 percent, while fees for games will range from 9 percent to 20 percent. Developers will pay another five percent if using Google Play Billing. For alternative app stores, Google is able to charge reasonable fees that cover operational costs, but nothing additional. Epic Games will be able to create an Epic Games Store on Android, paying minimal fees to Google, which is what the company set out to do when it initially filed lawsuits against Apple and Google back in 2020. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said that Google's proposal is "awesome" and a "comprehensive solution that stands in contrast to Apple's model of blocking all competing stores."
Google has made an awesome proposal, subject to court approval, to open up Android in the US Epic v Google case and settle our disputes. It genuinely doubles down on Android's original vision as an open platform to streamline competing store installs globally, reduce service fees… https://t.co/Q6E4XE3ych— Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) November 5, 2025
Google agreed not to enter into agreements that would see apps launch "first or exclusively" on Google Play, and it will not require an app to provide the same features on Google Play that it does on another app store. Developers are also free to communicate with customers about cheaper prices available outside of the Google Play Store.
It's possible that Google's settlement with Epic Games could impact the eventual outcome of the Epic Games v. Apple case. Apple and Google have charged developers similar fees historically, and there is inevitable change coming to the App Store ecosystem.
There are important differences between the two legal disputes, however, so what's going on with Google is not directly applicable to Apple. In Epic v. Apple, Apple largely won the case. The judge did not find that Apple had a monopoly, and Apple was only required to allow developers to link to web-based purchase options.
In Epic v. Google, Google lost. If Google didn't settle with Epic, it was going to be forced to make Play Store changes anyway. A jury decided that Google abused its power by operating an app store monopoly and charging developers exorbitant fees. Google has also always allowed for sideloading on Android devices and has been more open to it, even though it isn't as easy as it will be in the future.
Apple has consistently opposed sideloading and will not likely make the same concessions that Google made without being forced into it.
In Epic v. Apple, Apple is currently fighting an injunction requiring it to allow developers to link to outside purchase options in apps in the U.S. Apple is currently not allowed to collect fees on purchases made through in-app links, an order that came after the court found that Apple had willfully violated the original order requiring links by controlling the appearance of links and charging high fees.
The court is planning to review the proposed Epic v. Google settlement on November 6.Tags: Epic Games, GoogleThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Maps could be next in line to get an Apple Intelligence infusion Macworld
Since Apple Intelligence was announced in 2024, we’ve only seen the rollout of a few basic features, including Writing Tools and Genmoji, while more advanced features, such as the new Siri with deeper integration with apps, have been delayed without a clear schedule. Still, Apple has been working to expand support for Apple Intelligence, and Apple Maps may be the next app to gain some AI features.
Following the release of the first beta of iOS 26.2 on Tuesday, Macworld found evidence of Apple’s plans to bring its AI tools to Apple Maps. More specifically, the company aims to make searching within Maps more natural and accurate.
The update reveals a new framework called “MapsIntelligence,” which was already referenced in iOS 26.1. But code added with iOS 26.2 reveals a bit more about what Apple has been planning and what we can expect from this AI integration.
Smart Maps may be on the way
Essentially, Apple appears to be laying the groundwork for making the search experience in the Maps app much smarter through a new “SearchPersonalization” bundle, which is deeply integrated with AI models. The company has been using AI internally in the Maps app to enable things like faster autocomplete in search, better directions, and review summaries for businesses.
The AI models seem to analyze different aspects to provide smarter results, such as user location, real-time traffic, and specific details about a business, such as current menus. These AI models are also expected to integrate with Siri and Spotlight, so that users can find places on the map using natural language in their search.
Apple added a feature in iOS 26 to see recently visited places, but Apple Intelligence could upgrade the experience even more.Apple
Interestingly, the bundle also contains references to “Gemini,” which could be a hint at Apple exploring other large language model options beyond its own to power Apple Intelligence. It’s also been reported that Apple has partnered with Google to “lean on” Gemini in the new Siri coming next year.
The feature seems to be quite early in development, as code snippets reveal an internal system that tests and scores different machine learning models so engineers can decide which ML model performs best. This likely means that Apple engineers are still deciding what works best for this feature.
Once implemented, smarter search in the Maps app should make it much easier to explore the maps and find new places to go.
Interestingly, the code also references a “Spatial Lookup” feature. The term “Spatial” in Apple’s code usually refers to Vision Pro, so perhaps the company is also working on a more immersive Maps app for its headset. Currently, visionOS uses the iPad version of Apple Maps without any immersive features.
iOS 26.2 is expected to be released to the public by the end of the year.
The brand-new Apple Watch SE 3 is already a steal at under $200 Macworld
If yesterday’s $100 discount on the Apple Watch Ultra 3 was still a little more than you wanted to spend on a smartwatch, today’s deal might be for you. The brand new Apple Watch SE 3 is on sale for $200 right now, a savings of $50 and the first time it’s dropped this low.
Whether you’re new to Apple Watch or upgrading from an older model, we absolutely love this watch. In fact, when we reviewed the Watch SE 3, we gave it a 4.5-star rating and our Editors’ Choice award, as we found it super comfortable to wear. We also appreciated the always-on display and the fantastic battery life, as well as the healthy array of sensors and features.
The Apple Watch SE 3 tracks your workouts, brings you a ton of safety features, detects falls and car crashes and connects you to emergency services or your contacts. You can even set up this model for your kids, even without an iPhone in their pocket; they can still call, text, and, more importantly, share their location. It also features the new Sleep Score and sleep apnea notifications, as well as double-tap and wrist-flick gestures
The Apple Watch SE 3 is a great value at its $249 MSRP, but is an absolute steal for $50 off. It’s hard to believe we’ll see a better price for this, even during the upcoming Black Friday sales, so grabbing it now for $200 makes perfect sense.

Mac Studio may get a surprise M5 Ultra upgrade in 2026 Macworld
Following the launch of Apple’s M5 in new iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and Vision Pro models last month, analysts are already making predictions about the higher-end versions of the chip still to come. Specifically, we can expect a Mac Studio equipped with an extremely powerful M5 Ultra at some point in 2026.
In an article mostly focusing on Apple’s plans to enter the low-cost laptop market, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman briefly mentions a swathe of other Mac launch plans, ranging from Mac mini models with the M5 and M5 Pro chips to Mac Studios with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra. The M5 Pro, Max, and Ultra don’t yet officially exist; Apple has so far released the plain M5 only.
This might seem like an obvious progression—for the first three M-class chips, after all, Apple dutifully followed the base model with Pro, Max, and Ultra variants for higher performance in its premium Macs and other products—but that system has recently been thrown in doubt. With the M5 cycle underway, we still haven’t had an M4 Ultra, just the standard, Pro, and Max variants of that chip. And while it still could arrive (the M3 Ultra came out as late as this spring, long after the baseline M4), there are a variety of reasons why it probably won’t.
Gurman says the M5 Ultra will make its debut in the Mac Studio, but the chip has a good chance of appearing later in an updated Mac Pro. The current Mac Pro comes with a surprisingly outdated M2 Ultra despite its $6,999 price tag. We’ve assumed for some time that the next Mac Pro would jump two generations to the M4 Ultra, but with that chip now looking unlikely to ever appear, Apple may decide to wait slightly longer and go all the way to an M5 Ultra for the sake of future-proofing.
The precise timing of all this is unclear, but we can make some educated guesses. At present, we’re still on the standard M5, and we can expect the M5 Pro and Max to arrive in the MacBook Pro before the Ultra. We could get those in the spring of 2026, leaving the M5 Ultra to appear in the summer (potentially at WWDC) or fall.

Hidden iOS 26.2 code points to mystery Apple smart home accessory Macworld
Apple’s smart-home lineup is currently limited to Apple TV and HomePod, but according to rumors, the company plans to explore this segment even further with a new iPad-like hub and an array of accessories. While Apple itself hasn’t confirmed the news, the first beta of iOS 26.2 gives a clue as to what’s next when it comes to Apple’s smart home accessories.
iOS 26.2 beta code discovered by Macworld corroborates that Apple does indeed have plans to introduce a new product category relatively soon – or at least that the company has been exploring the idea. Code strings related to the Home app, which is used to manage HomeKit devices, now include references to a new system flag labeled “isFirstPartyAccessory.”
For reference, current home accessories that can also be considered first-party already have their own flag in the Home app. These are “isApple TV” and “isHomePod.” Other HomeKit devices are internally identified as third-party accessories.
Rumors are swirling that Apple will release a new HomePod with a built-in screen. However, the “isFirstPartyAccessory” flag suggests that Apple is working on support for new types of accessories designed by Apple that don’t fit into either the Apple TV or HomePod categories, such as cameras and doorbells.
Apple’s own security camera
In recent months, multiple reliable sources, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, have reported Apple’s plans to further explore the smart home segment, starting with the launch of a home security camera. There are not many details about the design or features, except that it would integrate deeply with the Apple ecosystem.
If true, this camera would surely fit as a first-party accessory in the Home app.
Bloomberg previously reported that this new camera is expected to be announced sometime in 2026. The fact that iOS 26.2 beta includes references to this new type of home accessory suggests that Apple is indeed preparing the ecosystem for new hardware coming soon.
While Apple’s plans may change and an internal system flag doesn’t guarantee that the company will actually launch new products, the discovery is in line with all the latest rumors about Apple’s next moves in the smart home segment.
iOS 26.2 is expected to be released to the public in December, but we don’t expect this new accessory to arrive until at least spring 2026.

Apple tests customizable power button controls in iOS 26.2 beta Macworld
With the release of the first iOS 26.2 beta, we have already learned some of Apple’s plans for the future of its iPhone software. And it seems there’s more to come. Code discovered in today’s beta reveals that Apple has been experimenting with the ability to customize the side (Power) button, a feature that could work similarly to the Action Button introduced with iPhone 15 Pro.
Currently, pressing and holding the side button on the iPhone activates Siri, while a double-press brings up the Apple Wallet interface for contactless readers. Both actions are tied to Apple’s own services. For the first time, it seems that Apple may be considering letting users choose alternative behaviors for this button.
This change could be particularly significant in light of recent European regulations that push for greater user choice and interoperability. Apple has already made several adjustments to comply with EU requirements, including opening the iPhone to third-party app stores and allowing users to choose default browsers and payment systems.
Allowing customization of the side button might be another step in that direction. In the EU, users can already set an alternative payment app to open with a double-click.
While the feature isn’t functional yet in iOS 26.2 beta 1, internal code references suggest Apple is laying the groundwork. It’s unclear whether the company plans to release this option publicly. Some of the features that Apple tests internally never see the light of day.
Based on the code, the implementation seems strictly focused on letting users choose which app they want to open with the button as opposed to the shortcuts and settings available with the Action button.
We’ll be watching closely as Apple continues to develop and test iOS 26.2 over the coming weeks to see whether this Side Button customization makes its way into future betas. The update is expected to be released to the public in December.

Xlr8yourmac goes offline, ending an era of DIY tinkering If you know the site xlr8yourmac.com then this is a bad day. After close to three decades of Mac hardware reviews and support, the site appears to have shut down for good.xlr8yourmac has closed downI've probably only cracked open one Mac in my life, maybe added a video card twice, and haven't touched external SCSI since using a Macintosh IIfx with the funky active terminator. Mike Wuerthele, my co-author on this piece, on the other hand has done things like "shove in more hard drives into a Mac Pro than was thermally and electrically wise" and is our Thunderbolt and external storage guy.The site that helped us do this, the very hardware-focused xlr8yourmac.com has now gone offline, very recently. We reached out both to ask what has happened, and to express regret that such a long-standing and so very useful site is gone. And yesterday we found out that the email for the site is not taking emails either. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

Unpack and pause – that’s exactly what you do when you hold the charging station from Peak Design in your hands. Elegant and high quality – that’s the first impression. Made from solid aluminium and stainless steel, the Magsafe and Qi2-compatible Peak Design Wireless Charging Stand Qi2 is impressive across the board.
The relatively high weight of 276 grams is also positive for such a slim charging station, as it is designed to stand reliably. Not only the high-quality choice of materials, but also the infinitely adjustable inclination, the rubberised base and the coated charging surface contribute to the positive image.
Compatible with all Magsafe iPhones and the Qi2 charging standard, the Qi2 wireless charging stand supports charging at 15, 10, 7.5 and 5 watts. The scope of delivery includes a USB-C cable almost two metres long and clips to secure the cable when laying.
Practice with surprises
The Wireless Charging Stand Qi2 looks stylish with its dimensions of 14.1 × 6.9 × 1.6 centimetres. But how does it perform in practice?
For practical use, you need a power supply unit with at least 20 watts of power. The iPhone – in our case an iPhone 15 and an iPhone 17 Pro – holds very well, both in portrait and landscape format.
Power supply connected and measured: What percentage is the iPhone charged to after 30 minutes?
First the tried and tested with an iPhone 15 – here we measured a value of 39 per cent, putting it in the top group. Then the iPhone 17 Pro – surprise: 44 per cent! Also a very good value, although the Wireless Charging Stand Qi2 does not support 25-watt charging.
And another surprise: The Wireless Charging Stand Qi2 can also charge headphone charging cases, although Peak Design does not officially state this.
Should you buy the Peak Design Wireless Charging Stand Qi2?
The Wireless Charging Stand Qi2 from Peak Design is an elegant and high-quality charging station. When folded up, it can be stowed away to save space or easily taken with you when travelling. When unfolded, it offers a very stable stand – a rarity for this type of design.
Typing lightly on the iPhone display is no problem, only with stronger pressure can the comparatively heavy construction slip. The hinge can withstand this without any problems. However, some iPhone 17 Pro cases can cause problems with the Magsafe contact surface, as protruding protective edges of the case protect the camera plateau and interfere with the contact.
The long USB-C cable included in the scope of delivery is a very positive feature. However, anyone taking the charging station with them when travelling would appreciate a carrying case. You should definitely get a suitable bag to keep the Qi2 wireless charging stand looking good for a long time. We recommend the Tech Pouch Small, which also offers space for the power supply unit and the AirPods.
In addition to the excellent workmanship, the high charging speed is particularly impressive. All of this justifies the top-end price of just under $80.
