Apple's 2026 hardware pricing is under intense pressure from memory & chip inflation While Apple hasn't done anything yet, the company is heading into 2026 with dramatically escalating memory and chip costs, as it aims to keep product pricing steadier than rivals.MacBook ProThe issue matters for Apple users because component inflation often shows up in storage tiers, memory upgrades, and configuration pricing. Macs are especially exposed since memory and storage choices are fixed at purchase.Morgan Stanley's note to investors, seen by AppleInsider, is based on recent supply-chain conversations rather than company guidance. The supply chain checks that the firm did in Taiwan point to tightening supply and higher input costs across phones, PCs, and servers. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
CES 2026: Snap-On Accessory Adds Touch Display to Your MacBook Apple has historically resisted the idea of touchscreen MacBooks, arguing that laptop PCs with the feature are unwieldy and far from ergonomic. But recent reports suggest Apple has changed its tune, and the company is now rumored to be developing a touchscreen MacBook Pro. In the meantime, startup Intricuit has been showcasing its own solution at CES 2026 that brings touchscreen to existing MacBooks with Apple silicon.
The Magic Screen is a snap-on digitizer that aligns to your MacBook's display using the built-in magnets that let your Mac know when the lid is closed to trigger sleep mode. After connecting it via a single USB-C cable, the tempered glass layer supports the gamut of gestures we've come to associate with smartphones – tapping, swiping, and zooming with your fingers directly on the screen.
In a nod to the iPad and Apple Pencil, the Magic Screen also comes with its own stylus that supports pressure sensitivity and stylus hover for drawing, writing, manipulating objects, and navigation. The company has shown off the touchscreen in action with apps like SketchUp, Miro, and Resolume Arena. It also supports iPhone Mirroring, allowing you to interact with iOS apps on your MacBook display with your fingers.
The Magic Screen includes a built-in battery that Intricuit says works for up to 100 hours on a single charge, and it comes with a Folio Case that also folds into a stand that braces against the MacBook screen to reduce wobble. When removed from the MacBook display, the device also doubles as a standalone drawing tablet.
As for Apple's plans, a report by industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests the company's first OLED MacBook Pro will feature a touchscreen display. Kuo made the remarks in September 2025, and the claim has since been corroborated by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who added that the touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro will retain a full trackpad and keyboard.
According to Kuo, the OLED panel will use on-cell touch technology, which integrates the touch sensors directly into the display panel's top layer (the "cell") rather than requiring a separate, dedicated touch layer like the Magic Screen. The analyst added that the shift "appears to reflect Apple's long-term observation of iPad user behavior, indicating that in certain scenarios, touch controls can enhance both productivity and the overall user experience."
M6 MacBook Pro: Release Date, Pricing, and What to Expect
The reports suggest Apple is aiming to launch its first touchscreen MacBook Pro as soon as late 2026 or early 2027. Meanwhile, Intricuit says the Magic Screen is compatible with all MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models powered by Apple silicon, and that it will soon be available on Kickstarter, with shipping on track to begin in the first quarter of this year. Does the idea of a touchscreen display on a Mac appeal to you? Let us know in the comments. Tag: CES 2026This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Acorn review: A powerful photo-editing tools at a remarkably affordable price Macworld
At a glanceExpert's Rating
Pros
Bargain price
No subscriptions required
Powerful editing tools
Universal app for Intel/Apple Silicon
Cons
Not much help for beginners
Requires macOS 14 or later
Our Verdict
People who are new to photo-editing may prefer an app that provides a bit more help and guidance to get them started, but Acorn provides a variety of powerful editing tools at a price that’s hard to beat. As well as photo-editing, the app also includes some useful vector graphics tools, along with precise typographical controls – and just a sprinkling of AI as well.

With more and more software tools requiring monthly subscription payments it’s always good to see apps such as Acorn that simply charge a one-time fee that allows you to keep and use the app for as long as you want. Acorn was already sitting on our list of the best photo-editors for the Mac, and the latest version, Acorn 8 was recently listed by Apple as a Finalist for the 2025 App Store Awards. The price on the App Store is $29.99/£29.99, but you can also download Acorn 8 from the developers Flying Meat, and that version offers a 14-day free trial so that you can take a good look at the app before buying it.
Acorn 8 is a universal binary that runs on Intel Macs or Apple Silicon, but you do need macOS 14 or later to run it properly. If you’re using Tahoe (macOS 26) then Acorn 8 gives you the choice of using its traditional ‘classic’ interface or switching to the new Liquid Glass look instead. But if you’re using an older version of the macOS then there’s an archive of previous versions of Acorn still available that you can try in order to see how they run on your Mac – although, of course, these won’t include the latest features that are available in Acorn 8.
As well as its photo-editing tools, Acorn includes a variety of precise typographical controls, including the ability to run text along a path.
Flying Meat
Acorn 8 certainly offers good value for money, as it includes impressive range of photo-editing tools that can match many of its more expensive rivals. There’s a simple palette on the left-hand side of the main editing window – known as the Canvas – which provides quick access to a standard set of editing tools, including rectangular, elliptical and freeform Selection tools, and a Magic Wand for automatically selecting areas by colour. And, as well as a conventional Crop tool, Acorn also includes a Perspective Fix option for cropping photos that have perspective or distortion problems.
You can use the Paint or Pencil tools to sketch in a few details of your own, but Acorn also includes some useful vector graphics tools for drawing shapes such as rectangles, ovals and arrows. Version 8 introduced a new Polygon tool that allows you to freely create multi-sided shapes, and there’s a Bezier Pen for more experienced artists who want to create simple illustrations by hand. Selecting any of these tools activates a second palette on the right-hand side of the Canvas, which provides additional controls for each tool, such as precise typographic controls for the Text tools, or the ability to adjust the size and style of the Paint brush in order to create different brush effects.
New AI features include Select Subject, which can precisely select the subject in the foreground on a photo and separate it from the background.
Flying Meat
As you’d expect, there’s an extensive selection of filters and effects that you can use to liven up your photos and, of course, there are new AI features as well. Acorn 8 doesn’t go overboard with its use of AI, but it does provide a Super Resolution upscaling feature that can increase the size and resolution of smaller images without losing clarity or details.
There’s also an AI Select Subject tool that automatically selects the foreground subject in a photo and allows you to lift it away from the background. This works really well, quickly and easily lifting out detailed elements from a photo or, alternatively, you can use the Mask Subject tool to reverse this process and completely remove the background while leaving the foreground subject on its own.
Most of these tools are quick and easy to use, but using more advanced features, such as masks and layers, does reveal the one weakness of Acorn 8. The app does seem to be aimed at more experienced users, and there’s not much help within the program for people who are new to photo-editing work. There are extensive Help files on the Acorn website, as well as some video tutorials, but these often just bombard you with long lists of features without explaining how they work – so if you don’t already know how the new LUT feature works (Look Up Tables) then Acorn’s Help files won’t enlighten you very much.
Rivals such as Photoshop Elements do a better job of helping new users with its step-by-step Guided Edits. But, of course, Photoshop Elements is a lot more expensive – and now requires a subscription as well – so Acorn 8 is still excellent value for money, especially for experienced users who can dive straight in and make the most of its powerful tools.
Should You Buy Acorn 8?
We’d like to see Acorn provide more help for beginners, but it’s hard to criticise an app that provides so many powerful photo-editing tools at such a competitive price. Acorn 8 will particularly appeal to people who already have some experience of photo-editing work and need powerful tools without the never-ending cost of Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscriptions.

Since Douglas Engelbart first demonstrated his new computer mouse invention in 1968, the revolutionary handheld controller has taken on many shapes and forms.
Some still look like real mice, except wireless so without the tail that gave them the name in the first place. Some use an upturned trackball so look more like a dead mouse. Others stand vertical, like a mouse at a mini circus.
For some mice it’s all about the sheer number of buttons and scroll wheels—the more the merrier. Others have no physical buttons at all, instead relying on multitouch surface swiping and scrolling—such as Apple’s Magic Mouse.
In my experience, none are quite like the new OriMouse from myAir.0, which folds completely flat for easy on-the-go storage.
Simon Jary
The Bluetooth 5.2 wireless OriMouse is a full-size mouse that folds flat, and weighs less than 40 grams. You can snap it into shape to activate, and just as quickly push it back into its flat position where it is largely only a few millimeters thin.
It’s slim enough to fit in a jacket pocket without being noticed. It’s ideal for slipping into a laptop sleeve with your MacBook or alongside an iPad.
The shape and look of the OriMouse is quite unique, using an origami structure that gives the folded mouse both strength and a comfortable hold. At first glance it looks like a complex folding pattern, but it’s an incredibly simple single fold with a neat magnetic closure.
Due to its structure, weight and build, it’s more durable than most mice if dropped.
myAir.0
It’s made from a smooth vegan leather and is available in a wide range of colors, like you’ve never seen from a mouse before: Vivid or Racing Red, Sunflower Yellow, Grape or Noble Purple, Lime Green, Beige, Titanium, Carbon Shadow, Moon Stone, Chestnut or Mocha Brown, Pink, Platinum or Snow Silver, Galaxy Blue, Black, Champagne, Teal, Orange, and even a Graffiti model.
myAir.0
Some colors are available in a covering that’s still vegan leather, but with a fabric surface texture and tactile feel.
The small metal button at the bottom is part of the neat magnetic hold.Simon Jary
When folded into its usable shape it works like a traditional—if extremely lightweight—optical mouse, but with subtle differences. Instead of a scroll wheel, it has a touch-sensitive scroll pad on its front slope.
This takes some getting used to, even if it does follow the same usage patterns as a trackpad, and even the Magic Mouse You must scroll with gentle finder movements, rather than franticly flicking away, as I apparently am prone to. myAir.0 describes the motion as “like drawing a short line with your finger”.
Give me a few weeks with the OriMouse and it may seem natural, but it will take some time to prise away my Logitech MX Master 4, our current choice of best wireless mouse for Mac. Using that mouse you also get horizontal scrolling, just as you do with Apple’s Magic Mouse. That’s a feature lacking in the OriMouse. But you try folding any of those mice as flat as the OriMouse.
myAir.0
There are Left and Right buttons and a Center button that is activated by pressing and holding for 1-2 seconds.
The company claims that due to the left and right buttons sitting closer to the desk surface than traditional mice, the distance between the fingertips and the desk is reduced so your fingers—resting in a more natural, relaxed position—don’t need to remain lifted above the desk for long periods. This reduction should place less continuous strain on the hand and forearm, decreasing the likelihood of strain associated with conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
The HD Infrared sensor at the front and center underside of the OriMouse works best on a mouse pad. On my shiny office desk the movement was stiff and jumpy. On a mouse pad it was fast and accurate to its 4000dpi would suggest. That level of precision is impressive compared to the Magic Mouse’s 1300dpi, but far off the MX Master’s 8000dpi.
Simon Jary
myAir.0 sells a $19 BagPad, pictured above, which is a combination of carrying bag and mouse pad, which we’d recommend, although it will work just fine with anything like the Journey ALTI Wireless Charging Desk Mat, or indeed a flat magazine or book. The BagPad is available in colors to match the mouse itself, but not for the entire range.
The underside of the unfolded OriMouse hides the optical sensor at the top and the USB-C charger at the bottom.Simon Jary
Battery
The OriMouse is charged via a subtly hidden USB-C slot. in the manual, myAir.0 recommends a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, but advises me that a standard USB-C to USB-C cable will also work.
Battery life is claimed at a full three months, longer than the Logitech’s 70 days and far superior to the Magic Mouse’s one month between charges. Unlike the Apple mouse you can use the OriMouse while it’s charging but it’s not as comfortable as without the cable attached as it tips the lightweight structure to one side. Possible, but not recommended.
myAir.0
Price
The OriMouse costs from $69 / £53, with some colors a little higher at $75 / £57; all direct from myAir.0.
Should you buy the myAir.0 OriMouse?
No mouse is as slim for travel as the 5mm foldable OriMouse, and no other mouse looks anything like it. It will gather a gawping curious crowd around your desk as you use it.
The trackpad-like scrolling takes some getting used to, but maybe I’m old-fashioned in my preference for traditional (but modern) scroll wheels. Going straight from a Magic Mouse will demand some patience and on-the-job practice. if you have the inclination to try such an innovative mouse, you may get used to the new ways, and release some forearm strain at the same time.

Whether you are looking or a new iPad, or your first iPad, considering one for a gift, or looking for one for work, you will no doubt be hoping to find a bargain.
We see cut-price deals on iPads all year round, although at certain times of the year deals are better than at others. If you want to pay less for an iPad we can help you find the best deals on every iPad right now, including the iPad mini, iPad Air, iPad Pro and the standard ‘iPad’. We know where to look and we know how to spot a really good iPad deal because we track the prices all the time.
We also have a guide to the best Apple deals right now on all Apple products, including MacBook Air deals, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, iPhone and Apple Watch.
How we find the best iPad deals
Britta O’Boyle
We identify the best iPad deals by combining our expert knowledge of Apple’s product lineup (which we have throughly review, and use daily) with specialized tools that monitor prices across a wide range of retailers. By tracking discounts over time, we understand what truly great deals look like and can quickly spot offers that deliver exceptional value.
In assessing deals, we look beyond the price tag to consider overall value. For example, while the M5 iPad Pro is a premium device, a substantial discount on a slightly older model may provide better value for many users. Likewise, we may highlight a strong deal on a basic iPad, pointing out that it can handle most everyday tasks for a fraction of the cost of a Pro model.
Because we understand Apple’s current iPad lineup, the features of previous generations, and what’s expected from future models, we’re well equipped to advise you on which iPad to buy and the best price to pay for it.
Our process for identifying the top deals involves several key steps:
We use specialized tools: We have tools that allow us to see the best deals across multiple resellers at any given time.
Tracking historical prices: We track discounts and price drops throughout the year, so we know each model’s all-time low price. This helps us distinguish a genuine deal from a price that just looks good.
Leveraging product expertise: Our extensive knowledge of the entire iPad lineup, including past generations and future expectations, allows us to assess the true value of a deal. For example, we consider whether a discount on an older model is significant enough to justify missing out on features available in a newer version.
Monitoring key retailers: We constantly watch major retailers like Amazon and Walmart for bargains, especially during major sales events like Prime Day and Black Friday.
We also have a guide to the best Apple deals right now on all Apple products, including MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, iPhone, and Apple Watch.
Is now a good time to buy a new iPad?
We recommend reading the advice below to understand whether Apple is likely to update the iPad you’re considering. This can help you avoid purchasing an iPad shortly before a new model is released – a situation that often leads to regret, not only because a better version arrives, but also because retailers typically discount older models once an update occurs. However, if you’re hoping to get a deal on the newest model, be prepared to wait.
With that in mind, now is a good time to buy a new iPad. Apple’s iPad product line is relatively fresh, with most models having been updated in 2024 or 2025, while there are updates expected for the iPad Air, iPad and iPad mini, it won’t be until later in 2026.
Brady Snyder / Foundry
Here’s a breakdown of the current iPad models to help you decide if now is the right time for you to buy:
iPad (A16): This is the cheapest iPad you can buy new from Apple, starting at a budget-friendly $349/£329 for the 128GB model. It was updated in March 2025, at which point Apple doubled the storage at the entry level without reducing the price, making it even better value for money. But there are important factors to consider. While the A16 chip delivers solid performance for daily activities, such as web browsing, streaming, light gaming, it doesn’t support Apple Intelligence (the suite of AI-powered features available on other current Apple products), plus the screen isn’t as high quality as the other iPads. A successor is not anticipated until mid-to-late 2026, so I you are looking for a bargain now then you can be confident that it won’t be replaced immediately. However, if you want to ensure that your iPad is future-proofed we’d recommend waiting or spending a little more to get an alternative iPad.
iPad mini (A17 Pro): The current model was released in October 2024 and was a significant upgrade, featuring Apple’s A17 Pro chip. This processor is powerful enough to support Apple Intelligence features, future-proofing the device for upcoming software innovations. The base model now starts with 128GB of storage, a welcome increase from the 64GB offered in previous generations. While the current iPad mini is a solid buy, there are rumors about a future model. Internal code leaks suggest a potential future update to an A19 Pro chip, which would offer a performance boost. However, we don’t expect an update until mid-to-late 2026 and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend buying the current model at a good price.
iPad Air (M3): The current models, which feature the powerful M3 chip, were released in March 2025. We think the M3 iPad Air is the best choice for most people, striking a perfect balance between performance and price. It offers superb processing power, a premium lightweight design, and great battery life, making it a versatile device for everything from streaming and gaming to more demanding work. While the iPad Air may gain an M4 chip later in 2026, if you need a new iPad now we recommend the current iPad Air as a great buy.
iPad Pro (M5): Now is an excellent time to buy a new iPad Pro; the current models with the M5 chip arrived in October 2025 and it is not expected to be updated again for at least a year, possibly not until 2027. The iPad Pro offers the most up-to-date technology on the ultimate iPad. Indeed, the M5 iPad Pro is considered the best tablet on the market, featuring a stunning Tandem OLED display, outstanding performance, and a super slim, lightweight design.
Release dates and expected refreshes aside, if you are wondering if there is a good time to shop for deals on a new iPad that’s a little more straightforward. The best time of year to get a deal is when the big sales happen, such as Black Friday in November or Amazon Prime Day sales in July and October. There may also be a Spring Big Deals event on Amazon. Those are when we see the biggest discounts, but if you can’t wait for one of those sales, don’t despair: we see price drops all year round and when we see a good deal we record it here.
Does Apple have sales?
The deals rarely come from Apple itself. While Apple will sometimes offer vouchers as an incentive to buy a new iPad (that’s Apple’s usual Black Friday giveaway), the company never discounts prices. Apple does sell refurbished iPads at a lower price though, so that might be something to consider.
If you are a student you can take advantage of Apple’s education discounts and save a little money on the full price of iPads (and Macs). And in the summer months Apple gives away Apple Pencils or AirPods with the sale of certain iPads (and Macs) to students in it’s Higher Education Sale.

Macworld’s top 5 tips for finding the best iPad deal
When you are searching for a deal keep the following points in mind and you should be happy with your purchase.
Check the storage: Some older iPads only had 32GB or 64GB storage. We don’t think that’s enough. The good news is that Apple’s current iPad line up has 128GB storage or more, so, unless you are buying an older model, this won’t be an issue. Just make sure that if you see a deal on an old model with less storage it is priced accordingly. Some of the best deals are on higher capacity iPads.
You probably don’t need cellular: You might intend to use your iPad when you are out and about. In that case spending more to get a model with cellular might appeal. Our opinion is that you can just hotspot from your iPhone to get on the internet from your iPad. You won’t need to pay for a data contract and your’ll also save yourself money on the price of the iPad itself. Check the deal you are looking at isn’t for a cellular model because a non-cellular deal will be even better!
Consider refurbished: If you want a bargain and don’t mind that it’s not the latest model buying a refurbished iPad can be a great way to save money. We recommend using Apple’s refurbished store because every product is throughly tested before being sold, and you get a one year warranty with it. If you want to save more money, companies like BackMarket and Declutter. There’s more information about buying a refurbished iPad below.
Shop around: If you want a deal then don’t shop at Apple! The best deals come from the various resellers who often battle it our to undercut each others prices for Apple products. Amazon is usually the best, but make sure to check the likes of Walmart, B&H and Best Buy in the U.S., and AO, Argos, Currys in the U.K. We have a list of the best places to buy an iPad below.
Wait, if you can: If it’s not Black Friday or an Amazon Prime Sale keep in mind that there could be even better bargains coming. Also, if Apple is likely to be announcing new products soon, be aware that it may mean that the current range will soon be discounted even more.

Which iPad should you buy?
The answer to this question really depends on what you need your iPad for.
I want the cheapest iPad you can buy
Consider the standard iPad. The cheapest iPad is the 128GB A16 iPad, which costs from $349 / £329. It’s a good option if you are likely your iPad is destined for general use, such as emails, one taking, web browsing, social networks, watching movies and reading books. It’s got a great sized screen and is light enough to pop in a bag and not feel weighed down.
The iPad A16 is good, as long as you don’t mind the lack of Apple IntelligenceBritta O’Boyle
I’m for an iPad to use instead of a computer
If you are just planning to edit documents and spreadsheets, any iPad can be a good supplement for a computer. If you need something with a little more power then the iPad Air or iPad Pro might be a better option. Apple and other companies sell iPad cases that come with built in keyboards, so you can turn your iPad into a laptop. Read our round up of the best iPad keyboards.

I want an iPad that won’t weigh too much
The iPad mini is a great choice if you value portability and power. Its compact 8.3-inch screen and is the lightest iPad you can get (weighing around 0.65 pound or 293g). This makes it perfect for travelers, commuters, or anyone who values a device that can easily fit in a bag or even a large pocket.
If you need a bigger screen the iPad Air is a good choice. The 11-inch iPad Air weighs just over 1 pound or 462g and is 6.1mm thick, making it comfortable to hold for extended periods and easy to take anywhere. What may surprise you is that the newest 11-inch iPad Pro is actually lighter and thinner than the 11-inch Air, at 444g and 5.3mm thick.

I want an iPad to use for gaming
If you are wanting to play the latest games on your iPad then the iPad Pro may be the one to choose. Other iPads will be able to play casual games, but to be sure of getting the power and graphics prowess necessary to play the latest games. The iPad Pro also offers a better screen with the 120Hz refresh rates that serious gamers will want.
However, even the A17 Pro chip in the iPad mini ensures that the latest games and apps run smoothly, making it a powerful portable console. The Liquid Retina display is sharp and vibrant, with the highest pixel density of any current iPad.
I want an iPad so I can draw
The iPad is a great device for artists. Any iPad, accompanied with an Apple Pencil or other iPad stylus, will allow you to draw using an app such as Adobe’s Sketchpad (now called Adobe Fresco) which can be used for free, but has in-app purchases.
If you are really serious about your art you may prefer an iPad Pro though, and you may even consider the nano-texture display option for less glare and reflections.
Petter Ahrnstedt
For Kids: The iPad mini is great option for Kids because its small, lightweight frame is easy for small hands to hold, and its power makes it a capable device for entertainment and learning.
For Seniors: The iPad mini’s light weight makes it easier to hold for extended periods.
For Students and Note-Takers: The iPad mini screen size is perfect for reading and taking notes, especially when paired with an Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C).For more information read our full guides to the best iPad for students, best iPad for kids and best iPad for the elderly.

Best refurbished iPad deals
The deals you will see above are generally from Apple resellers rather than Apple itself, which very rarely drops the prices. Apple does, however, sell reconditioned iPads in its Certified Refurbished store. So you might be able to grab a bargain.
The iPads in Apple’s refurbished store may be ex-display stock, or they may have been returned to Apple due to a fault, but they are fully reconditioned now and come with a full year’s warranty. It’s not like buying secondhand.
The U.S. refurbished store has a selection that includes:
10-inch iPad Air (5th generation), up to $200 off
11-inch iPad Air (M2, M3), up to $130 off

CES 2026: Aqara Launches U400 Smart Lock With HomeKit and Hands-Free UWB Unlocking Smart home company Aqara today debuted its latest smart lock, the U400. The Aqara Smart Lock U400 incorporates ultra wideband (UWB) technology for more precise location-based tracking and automated door unlocking.
There are few UWB smart locks on the market, but the technology uses the UWB chip in the iPhone to unlock the door right as you approach. There is no need to tap an iPhone on the lock with UWB, so the door can be unlocked entirely hands-free. We were able to test the lock ahead of its introduction at CES, and the UWB technology worked as advertised.
Walking up to the U400 with iPhone tucked in a pocket triggered the lock to unlock, but only within a foot or two of the door. It's sensitive enough that Aqara added a customization option to allow the U400 only to unlock when approached from a set angle of arrival, such as left, right, or center. Setting a specific direction can avoid accidental unlocks when you're near the door, and UWB is sensitive enough to know what side of the door a person is on.
The U400 works with the Apple Home Key feature, so it can also be unlocked via a card stored in the Wallet app. Home Key can be customized to unlock a door by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock, but UWB simplifies the process further and makes it more precise. There is no need for a PIN, tap, or authentication with the U400, and the iPhone or Apple Watch doesn't need to be explicitly tapped on the lock.
Like prior Aqara locks, the U400 offers a wide range of options for access. It supports unlocking with a fingerprint through a fingerprint sensor, NFC, an included key, or an access code with the included keypad. One-time and time-specific codes can be given to guests, and the lock can be set to lock automatically after user-specified period of time. Since the lock can be unlocked automatically if you're near it, turning on the auto-lock ensures that it doesn't stay unlocked if it's activated accidentally.
If you want to leave a door unlocked for a period of time or permanently, there is a dedicated Passage mode that can be set.
Since it is Matter and Thread enabled, the U400 can be connected to HomeKit and accessed through the Home app. It can be used in automations alongside other smart home devices, and the lock can be controlled with Siri voice commands. It also works with the Aqara app, and can be connected to an Aqara hub. Since it supports Matter, an Aqara hub is not required for full functionality, but a Thread Border Router and Matter hub are needed. The Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini work as home hubs for the Apple ecosystem.
Aqara says the U400 supports Aliro, so it is able to be unlocked with a smartphone regardless of operating system. It is also more secure than Bluetooth, because it uses time-of-flight signals instead of simply signal strength for unlocking, so there is no option for a relay attack.
The U400 is powered by a 4,880 mAh battery that can be removed from the lock and charged via USB-C, and it is supposed to last for up to six months per charge. Several Aqara locks used replaceable batteries, so the rechargeable battery is a nice upgrade. Exterior components have IP65 water and dust resistance for outdoor use.
Aqara is offering the U400 in Silver and Black. It is designed to replace a standard deadbolt, and it includes all of the necessary hardware for a swap.
More information on the U400 can be found on Aqara's website.Tags: Aqara, CES 2026This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

iPhone 17e Again Rumored to Feature Dynamic Island, A19 Chip Apple's iPhone 17e will feature upgrades including a pill-shaped Dynamic Island cutout and a downclocked A19 chip, with mass production set to begin this month, claims a Chinese leaker.
The current iPhone 16e features a "notch" at the top of the display, similar to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, and contains Apple's A18 chip with a 4-core GPU, instead of the 5-core GPU version found in the iPhone 16.
However, according to "Smart Pikachu," a Weibo account that has previously shared accurate supply-chain details on Android hardware, these two elements are set to be replaced on the forthcoming iPhone 17e.
Aside from Neural Engine improvements, performance from a downclocked A19 chip could be roughly comparable to Apple's A17 Pro chip, while the Dynamic Island would add the newer interactive area at the top of the screen that displays ongoing activities, incorporating the camera and other front-facing sensors. Otherwise, the iPhone 17e is expected to retain a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate, according to the leaker.
The leaker known as "Digital Chat Station" has previously claimed the iPhone 17e could have a Dynamic Island and an A19 chip, so the assertions made by Smart Pikachu aren't entirely new. However, another rumor has claimed the iPhone 17e will continue to use the same iPhone 14-based OLED panel as the iPhone 16e, but with slimmed down bezels. If that's the case, then the iPhone 17e will still feature a notch.
Elsewhere, rumors suggest the iPhone 17e will gain a magnetic ring that will allow it to connect to MagSafe chargers, which is not an option with the iPhone 16e. To cut down on costs, the device may also be equipped with either the older C1 or C1X modem, but no N1 wireless chip, based on leaked Apple code.
Smart Pikachu says mass production of the device will begin "after CES," suggesting commencement on or after January 9. The claim is broadly in line with reports that the iPhone 17e will launch in spring, possibly around a year after the launch of the iPhone 16e in February. The $599 starting price is not expected to change.
Smart Pikachu has previously claimed Apple is testing under-display Face ID for the iPhone 18 Pro models, but so far the leaker's reputation for Apple rumors remains unproven.Related Roundup: iPhone 16eTag: Smart PikachuBuyer's Guide: iPhone 16e (Neutral)Related Forum: iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple secretly boosted Wi-Fi speeds on your Mac and iPad–here’s how to get it Macworld
Those who own a Mac or iPad and would like to improve their device’s Wi-Fi speed are in luck. Apple has released free software updates for numerous models in both product lines that offer exactly this.
iPadOS 26.2 and macOS Tahoe 26.2 were rolled out midway through December, but this feature wasn’t noticed at the time. Only now has it been spotted that they contain an improvement to Wi-Fi performance.
According to MacRumors, and referencing updated tech specs in an Apple support document, iPads and Macs equipped with Wi-Fi 6E are now capable of a maximum channel bandwidth of 160MHz when connected to 5GHz Wi-Fi. That’s double the previous limit of 80MHz, and matches what was already offered on 6GHz networks (which are far less common, and require newer router hardware). In other words, you can now get the smooth streaming, speedy file transfers, and other benefits of 6GHz’s higher bandwidth limit, without the difficulties of actually connecting to 6GHz.
Fortunately, plenty of iPads and Macs support Wi-Fi 6E. The iPad Pro M2 and later, the iPad Air M2 and later, and the iPad mini A17 Pro all do so. As do the MacBook Pro M2 (Pro/Max) and later, the MacBook Air M3 and later, the iMac M3 and later, the Mac mini M2 and later, and the Mac Studio M2 (Max/Ultra) and later. Owners of a standard iPad miss out, as do Mac Pro users, though anyone using one probably has it hooked up to an Ethernet cable anyway.
iPhone 16 and 17 models already support this higher bandwidth, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro.
Not to mention that the software updates contain other new features and tweaks that are worth having. macOS Tahoe 26.2, for example, adds a new ‘Edge Light’ for improved video calls and brings new AI features to the Mac Studio. iPadOS 26.2, meanwhile, is packed with critical security updates, including a pair of zero-day WebKit flaws.
To update iPadOS on your iPad, open the Settings app and go to General > Software Update. The system will tell you if any new updates are available; if there are, simply follow the instructions to install them. On Mac, open System Settings and go to General > Software Update.

Is now a good time to buy a new MacBook Air?
Foundry
The current MacBook Air lineup features the M4 chip and was last updated in March 2025. As we said in our review of the 2025 MacBook Air, Apple made its best laptop better than ever. It wasn’t just an update to the M4, the base models ship with 16GB of RAM, a significant improvement over previous generations that often started with 8GB and, for the first time, the MacBook Air can support two external displays with the lid open, a major upgrade for multi-monitor setups.
While an M5 powered MacBook Air is expected in the spring of 2026 it is still an excellent time to buy a new MacBook Air, especially with the significant discounts available on the latest M4 models, though not quite as huge as the savings were over Black Friday.
There are certain times of year that can be better times to purchase than others, with Black Friday being one of them. You can also find good savings during Amazon’s Spring sale and Prime Days in July and October.
Students should check the Apple Education Store, where they will be able to pick up a discount (as long as they qualify for one). Read more: How to get a student discount from Apple. There is also Apple holds a “Back To Uni” event which runs in the US from June to September, in the UK from July to October, and in Australia between January and March. Most recently that deal has included free AirPods or Apple Pencils with select purchases.
The deals rarely come from Apple itself. While Apple will sometimes offer vouchers as an incentive to buy a new Mac (that’s Apple’s usual Black Friday giveaway), the company never discounts prices. Apple does sell refurbished Macs at a lower price though, so that might be something to consider. There is more information on refurbished options below.
Which MacBook Air to buy
Foundry
The MacBook Air offers a great combination of performance, portability, and features at a starting price of $999, making it an excellent choice for general consumers and students. The choice is mainly between the 13-inch and 15-inch models, with the selection depending on whether you would value the larger screen over the better portability of the smaller model.
Other factors to consider are:
Power & performance: Current MacBook Air models are powered by the M4 chip, which has a 10-core CPU and either an 8-core or 10-core GPU. This is more than enough power for everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and light creative work. Older models only offered 8GB RAM, we recommend that you only consider models with 16GB RAM as a minimum. The MacBook Pro is better for professionals who need more power.
Storage: Base models typically start with 256GB of storage . If you plan to store many large files, consider upgrading to 512GB or more, as the internal storage cannot be upgraded later.
Design and Portability: The MacBook Air is light and thin, with the 11-inch model weighing less than three pounds (1.24kg/2.7lb), making it easy to carry around.
Display: There is a choice of 13-inch or 15-inch display: the 15-inch M4 model is a great value option if you want a larger screen without the higher cost of a MacBook Pro. It starts at $1,199, which is a relatively small price increase over the 13-inch model. The M4 MacBook Air support two external displays, thanks to its Thunderbolt 4 ports. The older models were more limited when it came to supporting external displays.
Budget: The best choice depends on your budget and performance needs, as there can be compelling deals on older MacBook Air models and there are rumors of a new budget-friendly MacBook on the horizon.

Clearance MacBook Air deals
While stock is still available you may be able to pick up a deal on these discontinued Macs. Before you shop though you need to keep the following in mind:
The M4 MacBook Air starting price is $100/£100 less than that of the M3 MacBook Air.
In October 2024 Apple doubled the RAM in the M3 MacBook Air and you may still find an older model with 8GB RAM on sale. Do not buy the 8GB version unless there is a gigantic discount.

Where to buy the MacBook Air
You can buy a MacBook Air directly from Apple in the US or at Apple UK. You may, however, find a MacBook Air in stock and discounted at one of these resellers. There are plenty of stores and Apple Premium Resellers around the world that offer discounts on new and old Macs, so it’s worth shopping around (read our Where to buy a Mac article for more advice).
One benefit of buying from Apple is you could trade in your old Mac and get money off. We have an article explaining How to get money off with Apple’s trade-in program.
We recommend the following resellers:
U.S. retailers

Best refurbished MacBook Air deals
The deals you will see above are from Apple resellers rather than Apple itself – Apple very rarely drops the prices of the Macs it sells. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t save money buying from Apple: if you want to get a discount on a Mac from Apple you can buy a refurbished Mac. It’s not only Apple that sells refurbished Macs, but Apple does offer some great incentives to buy from Apple’s Refurbished Store, so we do recommend taking a look there for great MacBook Air deals.
The Macs in Apple’s refurbished store may be ex-display stock, or they may have been returned to Apple due to a fault, but they are fully reconditioned now and come with a full year’s warranty. It’s not like buying secondhand. Read about buying a refurbished Mac.
In the U.S. you’ll find 2024 and 2025 MacBook Air available in the refurbished store:
There’s up to $180 off an M4 MacBook Air with 512GB SSD.
Get a refurbished MacBook at Apple's refurbished store (U.S.)
In the U.K. you’ll find 2023, 2024 and 2025 MacBook Air available in the refurbished store:
There’s up to £210 off an M4 MacBook Air with 512GB SSD.

You can get refurbished Macs from other suppliers too, including the following refurbished resellers listed below:

In the U.K.:

Amazon also has a certified refurbished store for Apple products, but we would advise against buying any products that are older than five years – most of the products we see on the Amazon refurbished store are very old. Another place to look is BackMarket US and BackMarket UK, which sells refurbished Macs and other Apple products. We also recommend Hoxton Macs in the U.K.
CES 2026: DeskMate MagSafe Charger Gives Your iPhone AI Personality KEYi Tech, the company behind the Loona companion robot and ClicBot modular robot, is showing off a new take on AI assistants at CES 2026 called DeskMate, which is exclusively for iPhone.
Rather than building another standalone robot, the company has gone with a desktop charging hub that turns an attached iPhone into an AI companion, using your device's existing display, camera, and microphone to bring it to life. Apart from three USB-C ports and one USB-A port, the device features a rotating and tilting MagSafe charging stand that tracks your presence and keeps the iPhone facing you at all times during conversations. It even displays cute Pixar-style animated eyes on the screen.
The companion app automatically activates when you attach an iPhone to the charging pad. From here, the DeskMate is able to handle voice commands, manage your calendar, set reminders, and answer questions throughout the day. According to the company, DeskMate can also initiate conversations, offer suggestions, or provide updates when you return to your desk.
The AI companion integrates with workplace tools including Slack, email, and calendar apps, and it can also join video meetings to take notes or provide summaries. The idea is that it learns your routines and preferences over time, adapting its responses and suggestions accordingly.
KEYi Tech says it plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign in March for the device, which will be priced below $300, although the final costs are apparently still being finalized. Tag: CES 2026This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
The is likely the iPhone Fold display, and it looks amazing Samsung has shown off a prototype of a new folding display, and it seems very likely that this is the one that will be used for the iPhone Fold.
Apple had reportedly waited until the company was able to produce a display without a visible crease, and this one looks to fit the bill perfectly. The crease looks completely invisible in a photo and almost so in a video …

Heats up significantly less than previous model

Our Verdict
The Mini Ultra 3 is an improvement over its predecessor, the Mini Ultra. The Ultra 3 has some connection issues, but overall, it is a satisfying device to use for CarPlay.

The CarlinKit Mini Ultra 3 is an adapter for cars with USB ports that do not have support for wireless CarPlay. It offers a plug-and-play setup and works, but not without a few issues. The Ultra 3 is the follow-up to the Mini Ultra.
Compared to its predecessor, the Ultra 3 is slightly larger and has a round handle. It connects to the iPhone via Bluetooth and WLAN. The most important difference we noticed after driving a couple hundred miles is that the Ultra 3’s connection is much more stable. Apart from after an update, I had no interruptions, especially while driving.
I did experience the odd hiccup when I had to reconnect the device to the iPhone via Bluetooth by plugging it in and out, or I just waited for it to do so automatically. But it is much less frequent than with the previous model. Also, the small adapter obviously doesn’t heat up as quickly as its predecessor.
The CarlinKit Mini Ultra 3Carlinkit
All you need is a USB port in the car. The manufacturer has also made provisions for USB-C: a small adapter is included so that the Carlinkit Mini Ultra 3 can also be connected via it. It is still not possible to use two different users at the same time (each logging in with their own iPhone at different times).
I don’t like the enclosed miniature paper operating instructions, which are legible if you have good eyesight, strong glasses, or a magnifying glass. At least a QR code to a PDF instruction manual would be useful here. There is still no dedicated app for the few settings you might want to make, such as firmware upgrades. Here, you have to connect via a URL in a browser, with no indication of what is happening in the background. Thankfully, you shouldn’t need this function too often.
Should you buy the Carlinkit Mini Ultra 3?
I’m satisfied with the Carlinkit Mini Ultra 3 overall. It’s not perfect, but it’s a significant relief to have it automatically connect and have CarPlay running. It is important to note that the Ultra 3 is not compatible with BMW and Tesla automobiles.
Samsung teases the foldable iPhone’s biggest upgrade At CES 2026, Samsung showcased a crease-less folding OLED panel that might be headed for Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

How doomed is Apple in 2026? Just wait and see Macworld
It’s a new year! Congratulations! We made it.
[Looks at the world]
Yay?
Okay. Okay. Yes, there’s… stuff going on that, admittedly, could be a bit better.
Okay, it’s a real mess. Like… almost everything. That thing. The other thing. Don’t even get the Macalope started on that. But let’s take a look at what we have to look forward to this year. Let’s just try, okay?
Do we still like iPhones? Mostly, right? Well, there are gonna be some new iPhones, at least one coming fairly soon and fairly cheaply. Apple is widely expected to ship an iPhone 17e in the coming months, providing an update to its most affordable model of iPhone.
Now, you may be concerned about Apple’s 2026 profit margin. “Gosh!” you say, “I hope they can make enough money!” You are so adorable. Before you shove some cash in an envelope and send it to Cupertino addressed to the Apple Profit Margin Support Fund, you should know that the company also plans to ship its most expensive iPhone ever later in the year.
What a relief, right?
Get ready, because we’re going to be talking a lot about the foldable iPhone in 2026. If you want to get started and have a 3D printer, you can actually print out a model someone has created based on the supposedly leaked dimensions of the upcoming device. The Macalope did exactly that over the holidays and, as a long-time iPhone mini fan, was somewhat surprised. Folded, the device seems too wide to comfortably reach across one-hoofed, but it sure feels good in the pocket.
Since Apple is not expected to ship many of these devices because of the price, and the company is expected to push off the baseline of iPhone 18s until 2027, something else we can expect this year is a lot of concern trolling over the number of iPhones shipped.
Returning to Apple’s cheapest products, the company appears set to ship a low-cost MacBook based on the A18 Pro chip sometime around March or April. The rent may be too damn high, but the price of MacBooks looks like it’s going to go down to “between $599 and $899”.
(Another Mac-related thing we might look forward to this year is an update to macOS that rolls back some of what was done in Tahoe.)

Vision Pro, meanwhile, remains a product in the Apple lineup. Just not a real contributor to the team. As the company keeps on putting out content for the device, it hasn’t given up on it yet. But after years of speculation about an update more substantial than last year’s speed bump, you might want to temper any expectations for a big update to the Apple Vision line in 2026.
One of your valued financial partners is getting ready to leave you for greener pastures this year. Yes, Goldman Sachs may finally rid itself of the turbulent business that is the Apple Card. On the bright side, it’s only lost a billion dollars on the deal so it’s getting out… before any real damage could be done? Does that sound right?
Those of you who worried about Apple’s profit margins may be wondering, “But will the company that takes over be able to hold a candle to Goldman Sachs’ level of sleazy?” It’s a fair question, as those are some pretty sleazy shoes to fill, but the top contender right now is JP Morgan Chase, which is no slouch in the sleaze department.
Finally, it appears that we will still have AI to kick around in 2026. Tim Cook claims on every conference call with analysts that the more conversational Siri is going great and the company has promised (again) to deliver it this year. This year, meaning this year, 2026, not last year, which was when they first promised to deliver it.
With a lot of signs that the AI bubble is beginning to burst, it seems like maybe instead of throwing more cash on the AI bonfire of the insanities, Apple’s money might be better spent on the next big thing.
Whatever that is.
The Macalope doesn’t know for sure, but he’s been hearing a lot of buzz about Skynet and the Torment Nexus. Might be worth looking into those.
This is probably the iPhone Fold's crease-proof screen Samsung Display briefly displayed a creaseless foldable OLED panel at CES, that is very likely to be the one that will be used in the iPhone Fold. The fold is down the middle of this screen, but you can't see a crease — image credit: SamMobileApple was said to have developed its own crease-proof folding display. However, reports in July 2025 claimed it would use a Samsung design instead — and that design may now have been unveiled.According to SamMobile, Samsung is showcasing its first crease-less OLED panel at CES 2026. The company has a "Crease Test" area in its CES booth, pitting the new display against existing foldable OLED panels. Rumor Score: 🤔 Possible Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
Foldable iPhone's Crease-Free Display Tech Spotted at CES 2026 CES 2026 has just provided a first glimpse of the folding display technology that Apple is expected to use in its upcoming foldable iPhone. At the event, Samsung Display briefly showcased its new crease-less foldable OLED panel beside a Galaxy Z Fold 7, and according to SamMobile, which saw the test booth before it was abruptly removed, the new panel "has no crease at all" in comparison.
The existing display used in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 does an impressive job of reducing crease visibility, but crucially it can still be seen at certain viewing angles. In contrast, Samsung Display claims that the newer panel, destined for the Z Fold 8, offers "seamless text across the fold" whichever way you look at it – which is good news for Apple, given that Samsung is the company's main supplier of OLED technology.
Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in July that Samsung's next-generation Galaxy Z Fold 8 will use the same laser-drilled metal display plate as the foldable iPhone, with the component to be supplied by South Korean company Fine M-Tec. The laser-drilled metal plate is responsible for dispersing the stress generated by bending, allowing for the "crease-free" screen. It's worth noting that the panel structure, lamination method, and material process used for the foldable iPhone is said to have been designed by Apple, so we should still expect differences compared to the Z Fold 8's display that was on show here.
The same goes for the dimensions of the display that Apple uses. Samsung's existing Galaxy Z Fold 7 display is 6.5 inches when closed, and 8 inches when open, with a 21:9 aspect ratio when folded and a 20:18 aspect ratio when open. In contrast, rumors suggest the iPhone Fold's display will measure in at 5.3 to 5.5 inches when closed, and 7.5 to 7.8 inches when open (rumors vary). That will make it squatter and wider than Samsung's taller, narrower design, giving it a 4:3 aspect ratio when open.
Samsung gave no reason for removing the test booth so early on at CES. Regardless, Apple's stricter crease-free requirements for its foldable iPhone appear to have raised the bar for both foldable devices. Whether those advances also translate into improved long-term durability should become clearer in the coming months. The Galaxy Z Fold is widely expected to launch this summer, while Apple's foldable iPhone is expected to enter mass production this year and launch later, around mid-September.Tags: CES 2026, Foldable iPhone, SamsungThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

This is how long Macs and MacBooks last Macworld
Macs have a high price so it’s understandable that many Mac users will want to put off replacing them for as long as they can. But just how long should you expect a Mac to last?
You may even be considering buying a secondhand Mac and wondering how old is too old? For example, is that 2018 MacBook Pro for $300/£300 a good deal, or would you be better off spending a bit more on a newer model?
In this article, we will explain how old is too old when it comes to Macs. We’ll address questions including: When does Apple stop supporting Macs? If your Mac doesn’t get software updates is that likely to be a problem? Which Macs can still be repaired if required? Read this article to make sure that the Mac you are considering buying won’t be a dud and to help you justify spending money on a new Mac if it’s necessary.
Updated January 2026 to add the 2020 MacBook Air to Apple’s list of Vintage Products, that’s right: the 13-inch Retina MacBook Air from 2020, the last Intel powered MacBook Air, is now old enough to be considered vintage by Apple.
When should you upgrade your old Mac?
We know that Macs cost a fair bit of money and not everyone has the luxury of upgrading every few years. But at what point is it time to consider upgrading your Mac.
One factor to consider is the age at which most Macs start to experience issues, such as random shutdowns and degraded batteries that no longer hold their charge. Unfortunately, at one point repairing your Mac or MacBook will no longer be a viable option and you will need to look for a replacement. There is a point at which Apple stops providing the required parts for Macs, rating them either obsolete and vintage. Once a Mac is considered vintage (you can find a list of vintage and obsolete Macs below) we would recommend that you upgrade it.
Another issue with aging Macs is that the software you need may not run on it. You may also find that Apple no longer supports the operating system software that runs on that Mac – which could leave you open to malware and security vulnerabilities.
There are a few indicators that your Mac has reached the end of its useful life:
Apple no longer supports the latest version of the software it runs (which could leave you vulnerable).
The apps you need to use no longer run on it.
The Mac struggles to perform the tasks you need it to – especially if you can’t update the RAM or any other components.
Something breaks and is too expensive to fix, or the parts aren’t available.
The Mac is becoming unreliable. Unexpected shutdowns are becoming commonplace and you’ve tried everything to fix the problem to no avail.
Which Macs are supported by macOS updates? And why it matters…
Only the most recent version of macOS gets feature updates, but Apple usually maintains the last two or three versions of the macOS with bug fixes and important security updates, ensuring that the latest version of Safari will run, and that Apple Services, such as iCloud, are fully supported
Apple currently provides support for these versions of macOS, in terms of security updates: macOS Tahoe, macOS Sequoia, macOS Sonoma. When Tahoe arrived on September 15, 2025, Apple also issued security updates for Sequoia and Sonoma.
The macOS version prior to Sonoma was macOS Ventura, which last had a security update in August 2025, but may not receive any further updates now that Tahoe has arrived.
On that basis, if your Mac is able to run macOS Tahoe, Sequoia, or Sonoma, you should be able to be confident that Apple will keep an eye on any security vulnerabilities and other problems with these operating systems. You can see which Macs that includes in the next section of this article.
If your Mac is running an older version of the Mac operating system, you will find yourself out in the cold when it comes to essential security updates to Apple’s software. Read: The latest version of macOS your Mac can run.
Another reason why you want to be running a supported macOS version is that if it is too old you may also find that your other Apple products aren’t compatible with your Mac. For example, without the latest security update, you may no longer be able to use Apple Pay or other means to pay for services online, for example. And if you want to sync your iPad or iPhone with your Mac (rather than using iCloud) you will need a recent version of macOS. Since Catalina, syncing is done via the Finder, rather than iTunes. If you can’t run macOS Catalina you will need at least iTunes 12.8.2.3 and at least Mac OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan) or your Mac will not recognize your iPhone or iPad.
Are Intel Macs supported?
There are a small number of 2018/2019 Intel-powered Macs supported by macOS Tahoe, Sequoia and Sonoma, but support for Intel Macs will be ending soon. Apple has revealed that the version of macOS that launches in September 2026 will not support any Intel Macs. So If you are still using an Intel-powered Mac, it’s days are numbered.
If your Macs isn’t in the list of supported Macs below, it won’t receive important security updates:
Macs supported by macOS Tahoe
macOS Tahoe supports the following Macs:
MacBook Air M1 and later
MacBook Pro 16-inch from 2019 and later
MacBook Pro 12-inch from 2018 and later
Mac mini M1 and later
iMac from mid 2020 and later
Mac Pro from 2019 and later
Mac Studio (all models)
Macs supported by macOS Sequoia
2024’s Sequoia supports the following Macs.
MacBook Air from 2020 and later
MacBook Pro from 2018 and later
Mac mini from 2018 and later
iMac from 2019 and later
iMac Pro from 2017
Mac Pro from 2019 and later
Mac Studio (all models)

Macs supported by macOS Sonoma
2023’s Sonoma supports the following Macs.
MacBook Air from 2018 and later
MacBook Pro from 2018 and later
Mac mini from 2018 and later
iMac from 2019 and later
iMac Pro from 2017
Mac Pro from 2019 and later
Mac Studio (all models)
Read: Which Macs run Sonoma?
What are the oldest Macs supported now?
This means that the oldest Macs supported right now is the 2017 iMac Pro. Aside from that, the 2018 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini should get support for a little while longer. The oldest standard iMac to be supported is the 2019 model and only the 2019 Mac Pro can run Sonoma.
When Apple stops support for macOS Sonoma (likely to happen in late 2026), MacBook Air models from before 2020 will no longer be supported with security updates.
Which Macs aren’t supported by macOS?
macOS Monterey is no longer supported by Apple software updatesApple
We expect support for 2022’s macOS Ventura will end now that Apple has released macOS Tahoe.
This means that, aside from the iMac Pro, no Macs from 2017 are supported with security updates.
The following Macs can not be updated to macOS Sonoma from macOS Ventura:
2017 MacBook
2017 MacBook Pro
2017 iMac
Read: Can my Mac run Ventura?
When Apple introduced Sequoia in 2023 it dropped support for macOS Monterey, meaning that Macs that couldn’t update from Monterey could no longer get security updates.
The following Macs couldn’t update from macOS Monterey to Ventura:
iMac 2015
MacBook Air 2017
MacBook Pro 2016
Mac mini 2014
Mac Pro 2013
All other Macs that pre-date those mentioned above are no longer supported by Apple’s software updates.
If your Mac is a decade old then you certainly won’t get security updates for it. In fact, we’d recommend avoiding any Macs from before 2019, in which case you might as well just look at 2020 Macs with Apple’s own processor, rather than Intel, which won’t be supported for much longer.
Does it matter if my Mac won’t run a supported macOS?
Once you cannot update your Mac to run a supported version of macOS you are vulnerable to security breaches, which should obviously be a concern. You may also find that you can’t carry out transactions on the internet if you want to pay for things on your out-of-date Mac.
It’s also probably that the software you need won’t run on your Mac. Apple and other companies stop supporting older versions of the applications they make, so there could be issues with the versions of the software you are running. If you are experiencing random shutdowns, for example, it could be due to problems with an app you are running – problems that will not be addressed by the developer because that version of the app is no longer supported.
If you want to run fully supported software then you will need to update to a newer version of macOS – and that may mean that you need to update your Mac. Although, there are workarounds to install a new version of macOS on an old Mac if you need to.
Once Apple no longer supports your Macs with operating system updates, it’s probably a good time to replace your Mac.
When do Macs become obsolete?
But it’s not just software updates that determine the lifespan of a Mac. It’s also a question of whether it will be possible to fix your Mac should something go wrong with the hardware. Apple has two standards that indicate hardware support is waining: Obsolete or Vintage. The first stage is Vintage: you might be lucky enough to get parts for this Mac, the second is Obsolete: you are out on your own when it comes to any attempt to mend the Mac if it goes wrong.
If you look at Apple’s list of Obsolete Macs – those being the Macs that Apple will no longer provide spare parts for – you will see that the company stops providing parts for Macs that it hasn’t sold for more than seven years. In fact, the company may not even provide parts for Macs that haven’t been sold for more than five years (considered Vintage by the company).
This could mean that you won’t be able to get a faulty Mac fixed because the parts aren’t available.
Obsolete Macs
Obsolete Macs are generally Macs that Apple stopped selling more than seven years ago. Once a Mac is in Apple’s obsolete list you have little chance of getting it repaired if something does go wrong. You might be able to find spare parts yourself, but Apple won’t provide them.
You’ll find more details about the exact models on Apple’s US page and the equivalent UK page, but the lists below will give you a general idea.
Apple considers the following Macs and older Obsolete, now including the 2017 MacBook Pro models:
11-inch MacBook Air (early 2015 and older)
12-inch MacBook (2016 and older)
13-inch MacBook Air (early 2015 and older)
13-inch MacBook Pro (2017 and older)
15-inch MacBook Pro (2017 and older)
27-inch iMac (2015 and older)
21.5-inch iMac (2015 and older)
Mac mini (2012 and older)
Mac mini Server (2012 and older)
Mac Pro (2010 and older)
Anything predating the Intel switch, obviously.
Vintage Macs
Apple also has a list of Vintage Macs. These are Macs that Apple stopped selling between five and seven years ago. (If you live in France where a law means you can get support for spare parts for up to seven years after Apple stops selling a Mac).
Apple Authorized Service Providers will repair vintage products, as long as parts are available.
Apple lists the following products as being vintage, now including the 2020 MacBook Air, 2019 MacBook Air, 2019 MacBook Pro and 2019 iMac, and the 2018 Mac mini:
12-inch MacBook (2017)
13-inch MacBook Air (2018, 2019 and 2020)
13-inch MacBook Pro (2017, 2018 & 2019)
15-inch MacBook Pro (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019)
21.5-inch iMac (2013, 2017)
27-inch iMac (2015, 2017 & 2019)
Mac Pro (2012 & 2014)
Mac mini (2014 & 2018)
Based on the above, we’d suggest that if your Mac is more than eight years old, it’s time to look for a new one. And, if you see a 2018 or earlier Mac on sale, it’s not wise to buy it. In fact you will note that there are even 2019 Macs on the vintage list. Read: Why you shouldn’t buy a second hand Mac.
See: Best Mac: Every Apple Mac and MacBook compared
Should I fix my Mac or buy a new one?
If your Mac is in the Obsolete category above and something goes wrong with it then you are going to struggle to get the necessary parts if you wanted to attempt to get it fixed as Apple won’t provide the parts.
You might be able to buy an old Mac on eBay or similar and scrap if for the parts, but we’d suggest that it really wouldn’t be worth the effort.
If your Mac is in the Vintage list then Apple might be able to provide the required parts, but there is no guarantee. If you are lucky enough to get the part an Apple service provider might even be able to fix the Mac for you – but the cost of the work is likely to be prohibitive.
You might find that the Mac was included in part of a recall due to the issue you are experiencing, in that case, it might be worth enlisting in a repair program. However, if the time period in which Apple was offering the repairs has passed (which is unfortunately likely) then you will still have to find the money for the repair, which again might be prohibitive.
Apple repair programs
If the Mac you own, or are considering buying would be affected by any of the problems listed below that’s another reason to avoid it.
Apple’s current Mac repair programs include:
A recall for 15-inch MacBook Pro units due to a battery fault. September 2015 to February 2017 models affected.
Current service programs:
There is a Mac mini service program with a No Power Issue. This relates to the 2023 Mac mini.
Service programs that have now ended:
There was a keyboard services for some Mac laptops bought since 2016, but this is no longer running.
A 13-inch MacBook Pro backlit service program for models from 2016-2018.
A SSD service program for 13in MacBook Pro models from 2017-2018.
A battery replacement program for 13in MacBook Pros from 2016-2017.
We have more information about Apple’s product recalls and repair programs here. Plus, visit this page for more information on the above repair programs.
Assuming your fault isn’t one of those listed above, you may be faced with a pricy repair bill. We suggest that if your Mac is older than five years then repairing it will not be worth it – unless of course there are important documents or photos on it that you want to retrieve in which case it might be worth looking at how to recover these files or the best software to recover data on your Mac.
Should I update my Mac or buy a new one?
This is a similar question to the one above in as much as you will be weighing up whether spending money to improve your Mac might be more savvy than buying a new Mac.
You might be wondering if you could speed up your Mac by adding more RAM, or you might be thinking that you could double your storage by adding a new SSD. Unfortunately with most modern Macs there is no way to update the hardware.
In recent years Apple has taken to soldering RAM in place and hiding components away to make access impossible (or at least impossible if you don’t want to completely destroy your Mac attempting to get to them). With M-series Macs memory, GPU and CPU are all integrated onto the chip, so it is impossible to upgrade them. Nor can you update the SSD as it is soldered onto the motherboard.
There are other ways to upgrade your Mac, though. Read: How to upgrade your Mac mini for ideas.

Can I update the RAM in my Mac?
If you have one of the following Macs you might be able to update the RAM:
MacBook (2008 to 2011 models)
MacBook Pro (2009-2012 13in, 2008-2012 15in, all 17-inch models)
iMac: The RAM can be updated in the majority of iMacs except for the 21.5in models from Mid-2014 and Late-2015, which had their RAM soldered into place.
Mac mini: (2010-2012 and the 2018 model)
Mac Pro: (all models)
iMac Pro: RAM isn’t user-accessible, but can be updated at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You can’t update the RAM in any MacBook Air models.
We explain which Macs have accessible RAM in this article and also look at how to update the RAM.
What can I update in my Mac?
It may be possible to update other components, including the SSD, hard drive, battery, logic board, hard drive, but this is only possible for a few Macs and the process is only for the expert. If you’d like to try read: How to upgrade a Mac.
If you are up for pulling your Mac apart and attempting to upgrade its components then by all means try, but make sure you back it up first and be prepared to admit defeat if it doesn’t go as planned.
As for whether it is worth upgrading your Macs RAM or any other component – assuming you can get the parts – rather than buying a new Mac? Perhaps it will buy you a few more years of use. However, we’d be inclined to suggest that if your Mac is older than seven years it really isn’t worth it (and, you’ll notice, the MacBooks that can have their RAM upgraded tend to be older than that).
How long do Macs last?
So, in answer to the question: How long do Macs last? We’d say five to eight years, but beware that you may not be able to replace any faulty parts in a Mac when more than five years have passed since Apple last sold it.
With Apple saying that it will stop support for Intel-powered Macs with the version of macOS that launches at the end of 2020, we recommend that you avoid buying an Intel-powered Mac now.
So, our advice right now is to avoid buying a Mac that is more than five years old – especially if it has Intel inside. And if you haven’t yet updated to the series Apple silicon powered Macs, what are you waiting for!
Before you buy a new Mac, read our article about the best time to buy a Mac or MacBook.

CES 2026: Kwikset Launches $189 Aura Reach Smart Lock With Matter Integration Kwikset today announced the Aura Reach, a smart lock that offers Matter over Thread and Bluetooth connectivity. With Matter, the lock is able to connect to HomeKit, allowing it to be controlled through Apple Home or with Siri voice commands.
The Aura Reach supports hands-free auto unlock, proximity keypad wakeup, and a guided installation process for easy setup. It is able to be activated alongside other HomeKit and Matter devices using automations in the Apple Home app.
Users can set up temporary access codes for guests, track entry history, and get alerts if someone attempts to use an invalid code. The lock incorporates the Kwikset SmartKey Security, so it can be rekeyed in seconds. The lock is available in satin nickel and black color options.
Unlike some of the higher-end smart locks that have been coming out at CES, the Aura Reach does not include UWB, nor does it work with Apple's Home Key feature.
The Aura Reach is one of several Matter-enabled smart locks in Kwikset's lineup, including the Halo Select and Halo Select Plus. Compared to those locks, it lacks Wi-Fi, Home Key, and door sensing technology that's able to determine whether a door is open or closed.
The Aura Reach is priced at $189 and is available from major retailers like Amazon starting today.Tag: CES 2026This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

CES 2026: Samsung Announces Glasses-Free 6K 3D Odyssey G9 Gaming Monitor Samsung announced a refreshed Odyssey gaming display lineup for CES 2026, which includes five updated models with higher resolutions and refresh rates.
The new 32-inch Odyssey G9 is a 6K 3D display that doesn't require glasses to see the 3D effect. Samsung says the monitor uses real-time eye tracking to adjust depth and perspective in response to the viewer's position, providing a layered sense of dimension with no need for a headset.
The Odyssey G9 features a 165Hz refresh rate that's enhanced to 330Hz with Dual Mode, and 1ms gray-to-gray response time for minimal motion blur and ghosting. Samsung says that PC gamers will have access to an expanded lineup of supported titles with 3D effects created in collaboration with game studios, so it's unclear if the 3D functionality will be available for Macs.
Either way, games will not natively support 3D functionality, and game designers will need to optimize their games for the technology. The first games that will offer support include The First Berserker: Khazan, Lies of P: Overture, and Stellar Blade. According to Samsung, gamers can expect added dimensionality that enhances terrain, distance, and object separation compared to standard 2D gameplay.
Samsung's 27-inch Odyssey G6 display offers a 600Hz refresh rate enhanced to 1,040Hz through Dual Mode for competitive gaming. Players will be able to better track targets and see fine details during high-speed movement. The G6 is compatible with AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync.
There are also several new Odyssey G8 displays, including a 32-inch 6K model with a 165Hz refresh rate, a 27-inch 5K model with a 180Hz refresh rate, and a 32-inch OLED model with a 240Hz refresh rate.
More information on Samsung's Odyssey display lineup can be found on the Samsung website. Samsung has not yet announced pricing for the new displays.Tags: CES 2026, SamsungThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

CES 2026: Twelve South Unveils Valet Tray With Qi2 and Modular Design Twelve South today announced a new Valet tray with Qi2-certified wireless charging that combines 15W magnetic charging with a leather-lined catch-all for everyday items.
The Valet features Qi2 wireless charging, delivering up to 15W of power to compatible iPhone models and other Qi2 devices. It also includes a USB-C port capable of supplying up to 15W of power to a second device. It is concealed beneath the base of the tray to reduce visible cables. The Valet is powered via a USB-C port with a braided cable.
The tray is built around a weighted zinc alloy base for stability and is wrapped in Nappa leather. The charging pad itself is raised slightly above the tray surface, creating a defined area for phone placement while leaving the surrounding space available for other personal items.
Valet is available with black or taupe leather as standard, while the outer metal frame is removable and can be swapped independently of the main body, with options for black, taupe, brown, or ecru inserts.
There is an integrated cable management system in the base, enabling the Valet to be oriented in four different configurations. This allows the wireless charging pad to be positioned on the left or right side of the tray, or the entire unit to be rotated into a portrait orientation for narrower surfaces.
A small status light provides visual confirmation that a device has begun charging. The light briefly pulses when charging starts and then fades out after eight seconds.
Valet is available for pre-order in the United States for $179.99, with launch scheduled for January 15, 2026. International availability is planned for later in 2026.Tags: CES 2026, Twelve SouthThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

iPadOS and macOS 26.2 Double 5GHz Wi-Fi Bandwidth for Wi-Fi 6E Devices With the release of iPadOS 26.2 and macOS Tahoe 26.2, Apple has improved the Wi-Fi speeds for select Macs and iPads that support Wi-Fi 6E. Updated Wi-Fi connectivity specifications are listed in Apple's platform deployment guide.
The M4 iPad Pro models, M3 iPad Air models, A17 Pro iPad mini, M2 to M5 MacBook Pro models, M2, M3, and M4 MacBook Air models, and other Wi-Fi 6E Macs and iPads now support 160MHz maximum channel bandwidth when connected to 5GHz Wi-Fi networks, the same theoretical maximum throughput supported by 6GHz networks. Previously, these devices were limited to 80MHz.
In ideal conditions, a 160MHz maximum means that iPad and Mac users should see faster file transfers, quicker uploads, and smoother streaming. Wi-Fi 6E devices can take advantage of 6GHz networks, but 5GHz networks remain far more common. 6GHz networks require new router hardware, along with a machine that can take advantage of a 6GHz network.
With the upgrade, Wi-Fi 6E devices that connect to a 5GHz network can get throughput approaching peak 6GHz speeds without having to connect to a 6GHz network. Users who have a Wi-Fi 6 or 6E setup that supports 160MHz on 5GHz networks will be able to take advantage of the bandwidth improvement. Macs that have the updated 160MHz bandwidth limit will not see improvements when connected to 5GHz routers limited to 80MHz.
Though 5GHz bandwidth has improved on select Macs and iPads, 6GHz networks still have the benefit of less congestion and more spectrum.

Honor’s new Power 2 is an iPhone 17 Pro Max for Android fans Macworld
Okay, we’ll admit, “Chinese Android phone copies Apple” isn’t all that surprising of a headline. Apple’s designs and interfaces have been the subject of much adoration overseas, and there is no shortage of knock-off devices over the years that have taken a good deal of inspiration from the latest Apple devices.
But Honor’s latest phone, the Power 2, announced Monday at CES, may be the most blatant. While most device-makers try at least a little to make their devices unique, the Honor Power 2 couldn’t possibly look more like an iPhone 17 Pro. It has skinny uniform bezels, a camera plateau that houses three cameras, and starts at 256GB of storage with 12GB of RAM. Oh, and it comes in Cosmic…er, Sunrise Orange.
I mean, just look at it:
Quick, which one is the iPhone 17 Pro?Foundry
That 10080 number in the image at the top refers to the battery capacity, which is twice that of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, so Android users will have something to brag about. Additionally, it’s got a slightly larger 6.79-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 1,800 nits peak local brightness. It’s also powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Elite chipset and has a 16MP selfie cam and a 50MP main rear camera.
Along with Sunrise Orange, the Honor Power 2 comes in Midnight Black (Deep Blue) and Snowfield White (Silver).

CES 2026: Pioneer Announces First Aftermarket CarPlay Unit With Spatial Audio Pioneer today announced a new in-dash receiver that supports Dolby Atmos audio playback within Apple CarPlay, extending the feature into the aftermarket category for the first time.
Apple has supported Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio across much of its ecosystem since 2021, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, AirPods, HomePod, and Apple Music. In vehicles, however, Dolby Atmos playback through Apple CarPlay has depended on automakers integrating compatible audio hardware, resulting in availability being restricted to a relatively small number of high-end models. Pioneer's new SPHERA in-dash receiver makes Atmos-capable CarPlay available to a much broader base of drivers through aftermarket installation.
The system uses a vehicle's existing speaker setup rather than requiring specialized or factory-installed Atmos hardware. The company says the receiver uses an optimized four-channel configuration that works with standard front and rear speakers, allowing spatial audio playback without additional height or ceiling-mounted speakers.
Pioneer's proprietary Pure Autotuning technology is designed to address the acoustic variability of vehicle interiors, accounting for different sizes, shapes, materials, and speaker placements. It automatically adjusts time alignment, frequency response, and channel levels to place the listener at what Pioneer calls the acoustic center position.
The receiver itself features a 10.1-inch HD capacitive touchscreen and supports wireless CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. The interface includes a split-screen mode that allows navigation to remain visible while drivers access audio controls or system functions.
SPHERA is designed for universal aftermarket installation and can be fitted to a wide variety of vehicles with minimal modification. Pioneer announced it at CES 2026 and said the receiver will be available starting in the spring, with pricing starting at $1,300.Tags: CES 2026, PioneerThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
