Do you use Apple’s localized subscription prices? I've noticed that when I set my subscription to say $3.99 USD Apple automatically assigns 'localized' prices for other countries depending on factors like market conditions, local purchasing power, etc. For example, Canadian subscribers are only charged around $2.84 USD leading to decreased revenue from them compared to others. Is it recommended to just use […]
Apple's Cheap MacBook: What to Expect in 2026 Apple is going to release a low-cost MacBook in 2026, with the device set to be more affordable than the $999 MacBook Air. With the affordable notebook, Apple is aiming to better compete with cheap Chromebooks and Windows PCs.
If you're thinking about picking up a computer for lightweight tasks like document editing, web browsing, watching videos, and doing homework, you might want to wait to see what Apple has in store before making a purchase. Below, we highlight what we know about the new Mac so far.
Size
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the low-cost MacBook will have a display that's around 13 inches in size. The MacBook Air has a 13.6-inch display, so the more affordable MacBook could be slightly smaller. It's sounding like it won't be too far off from the 13-inch MacBook Air, though.
There are no details on how thick it might be, but Apple probably won't prioritize a thin design for a machine optimized for a low price. Since the MacBook Air can run fine with an M-series chip and no fan in an enclosure that's 0.44 inches thick, there's no reason for the MacBook to be any thicker than that.
Design and Display
The low-cost MacBook will have a standard LCD display with no mini-LED technology or ProMotion refresh rate. It could come in bright colors like the iMac, with Kuo suggesting Apple will offer it in silver, blue, pink, and yellow.
A-Series Chip
Apple is planning to use its A18 Pro chip in the MacBook. We first saw the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro models. The chip is built on Apple's second-generation 3-nanometer process, featuring 8GB RAM and support for Apple Intelligence.
It's fast and efficient, and more than capable of handling day-to-day tasks. In Geekbench 6 benchmarks, the A18 Pro offers single-core CPU performance scores at the level of the M3 Ultra, and multi-core performance scores higher than the M1 chip that Apple used in the first Apple silicon MacBook Air. Metal scores that measure GPU performance are also similar to the M1 chip Metal scores.
The A18 Pro will be equivalent to the M1 for some tasks, and faster for other tasks. Apple no longer sells the M1 MacBook Air from its own store, but it has offered the machine through Walmart at a $599 price point.
Capabilities
With the A18 Pro chip, the low-cost MacBook would be able to do anything that can be done on an iPhone 16 Pro. It would be a suitable replacement for the low-cost iPad paired with a keyboard, and it would also support Apple Intelligence features.
Right now, an iPad is essentially the only option for a low-cost portable device that can serve as a computer, but the low-cost MacBook will add a solution that runs macOS instead of iPadOS.
Tasks like browsing the web, watching videos, creating documents, editing photos, and even light video editing would be no problem. A low-cost MacBook with A18 Pro chip could play all of Apple's iPad and iPhone games, including Apple Arcade titles, but it would not work well with high-end system intensive games.
It would also run apps like Final Cut Pro, but speeds for things like exporting video would not be as quick as with a more powerful Mac.
Apple probably won't go all out on ports, and the MacBook is likely to get just a single USB-C port, though two like the MacBook Air is also possible.
The A18 Pro chip is efficient, and there's a lot of space inside a 13-inch enclosure for a battery, so we could be looking at MacBook Air-level battery life or better. The MacBook Air's battery lasts for up to 18 hours when watching videos, or 15 hours when browsing the web.
Price
There are no specific details on price as of yet, but Bloomberg claims it will cost "well under $1,000." The MacBook Air is priced starting at $999, so it would need to come in under that.
Apple has a 13-inch iPad Air that has a display in the same range rumored for the low-cost MacBook, and it's priced at $799. The iPad Air has a higher-end M-series processor though, so the low-cost MacBook could be less than the iPad Air.
The closest iPad approximation for the chip is the iPad mini, which has an A17 Pro. The iPad mini is priced starting at $499. A price somewhere between $499 and $799 could make sense looking at Apple's existing product lineup. The older M1 MacBook that sells for $599 at Walmart also gives us a hint at what Apple might charge.
Launch Timing
Apple could launch the low-cost MacBook in the first half of 2026. Updates are planned for the MacBook Air in early 2026, so the low-cost model could launch sometime in that same timeframe.

In-Depth iPhone Battery Experiment Pits Slow Charging Against Fast Charging HTX Studio this week shared the results from a six-month battery test that compared how fast charging and slow charging can affect battery life over time.
Using six iPhone 12 models, the channel set up a system to drain the batteries from five percent and charge them to 100 percent over and over again. Three were fast charged, and three were slow charged.
Another set of iPhones underwent the same test, but with charging initiated at 30 percent and stopped at 80 percent, so the iPhones were always in that range.
Prior to the experiment, the capacity for each phone was tested, and after 500 cycles, the capacity was tested again. The results suggest there is minimal additional battery drain from fast charging, but keeping an iPhone between 30 and 80 percent charge could be minimally beneficial.
HTX Studio concluded that the best way to charge an iPhone is "however you like," without overthinking it and trading mental energy for a tiny bit of battery life. The same video also includes Android tests, and is well worth watching in full for those curious about the effects of fast charging. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Why camera-equipped smart glasses are already a privacy disaster We've seen this before with Google Glass — and somehow, big tech has learned nothing. Let's hope Apple has, by the time they ship. The privacy nightmare of smart glassesI have spent days with the same group of people, more or less, for over six years. For some of the crew, it's been even longer. When you spend that long with the same people, inevitably, a bit of the work relationship dissolves. It's the same whether you work in the office or across the globe in the same Slack channel. For the AppleInsider staff, a lot of our "non-work" conversations are predictable. tvOS 26.2 Lets You Create Apple TV Profiles Without an Account, Adds Dedicated Kids Mode With tvOS 26.2, Apple is changing the way that profiles work on the Apple TV. It's now possible to create a profile without an Apple Account, which is particularly useful for guest profiles and profiles for children.
In the Apple TV Settings app's profiles section, the "Add New Profile" option no longer requests that users sign in with an Apple device or manually with an Apple Account.
Alongside the Apple Account sign in, there is a "Create Profile" option that only requires a name, a profile rating, and a yes or no question about whether the new user is a child.
Selecting yes limits content to a PG rating by default, but there is a customize option for more granular control. Users can select ratings for TV shows and movies that are appropriate for the child based on their age. All of the standard TV show and movie ratings are available to select. Creating a child account and choosing a rating changes the Apple TV content that is available to the child. The Apple TV app will only show content that is appropriate for the limits that have been established for the account.
In tvOS 26.1, the latest public version of tvOS, profiles require an Apple Account. The TV app has a dedicated children's section and parents can set up parental controls to limit access, but it is not the full kids-only Apple TV view that's in tvOS 26.2.
The Apple TV app in tvOS 26.2 does not show any adult content when a child's profile is signed in, including in the Store and Library sections of the app. Only kids shows and movies are available to watch or purchase.
Years ago prior to the launch of tvOS 14, there were rumors of a dedicated kids mode for the Apple TV, but that didn't materialize. The changes in tvOS 26.2 are the closest Apple has come to an Apple TV experience just for children.
When a kids profile is active, it only applies to the Apple TV app. All other apps are visible and accessible to the user, and any app can be downloaded from the App Store. Parental controls still need to be used to limit access to content outside of the Apple TV app.
Setting up an adult profile allows for unrestricted access to the content on the Apple TV, so adults in the home that don't have an Apple Account can also now have their own profiles with their own content recommendations. Any account that is created without an Apple Account can be deleted or can be upgraded to add an Apple Account at a later time.
Profiles on tvOS 26.2 say that they may also show up on certain third-party devices, so accounts for children may also be accessible on devices with the Apple TV app, like smart TVs.
tvOS 26.2 is available for developers and public beta testers at the current time, and it is expected to launch sometime around the middle of December.Related Roundup: Apple TVBuyer's Guide: Apple TV (Don't Buy)Related Forum: Apple TV and Home TheaterThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

macOS Tahoe's Terrible Icons An anonymous reader shares a report: On the new MacOS 26 (Tahoe), Apple has mandated that all application icons fit into their prescribed squircle. No longer can icons have distinct shapes, nor even any fun frame-breaking accessories. Should an icon be so foolish as to try to have a bit of personality, it will find itself stuffed into a dingy gray icon jail.
[...] While Apple had previously urged developers to use squircle icons on our apps, they've now taken things much further to ensure compliance. It's a shame. Apple updated their own app icons on Tahoe, for both the squircle shape as well as the new "Liquid Glass" interface. Mostly, these icons seem dumbed-down, with a loss of detail.

The M2 Ultra model is still one of the fastest machines you can buy, and right now, there’s a massive sale on it at Best Buy. Instead of shelling out $3,799 for an M3 Ultra model, you can grab the M2 Ultra Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for $2,649, a ridiculous savings of $1,150, and the biggest savings we’ve ever seen on the Mac Studio.
For comparison, this combo—the powerful M2 Ultra chip, 64GB of memory, and 1TB of storage space—is the same configuration Apple changes $6,999 for in the Mac Pro. Needless to say, this compact computer is just what a creative professional or power user needs, easily handling all sorts of demanding tasks with ease.
From video editing to 3D modeling, from machine learning to AI development or audio engineering, there’s nothing the Mac Studio can’t do. These machines aren’t messing around — they can do it all, pushing performance to new levels. It doesn’t have internal expansion, but the Mac Studio features a ton of ports, including Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, USB-A, a 10Gb Ethernet port, and an SDXC card slot. In total, it supports up to eight external displays for extreme multitasking and productivity flows.
So take advantage of this impressive discount and grab the Mac of your dreams for $1,150 while this Best Buy deal is still live.

Apple Music must emulate Spotify or die, says nonsensical report There's a recurring theme from industry watchers, repeated on Friday, that Apple Music is doomed, if Apple doesn't copy Spotify's business model. The core premise is nonsense, and the reasoning for it is ridiculous.Apple MusicIt is true that Apple Music lags far behind Spotify, even if the European Union doesn't seem to think so. It is unquestionably true that Spotify is the largest streaming player in the world, as a new Bloomberg opinion piece by Ashley Carman says. But saying, as that op-ed does, that Apple must therefore emulate Spotify is the politician's syllogism. We must do something / this is something / therefore we must do this. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
Here’s how the Gemini-powered Siri will likely work under the hood Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Google and Apple are close to reaching a yearly $1 billion agreement for a version of the Gemini model that will power the revamped Siri next year.
But perhaps more interesting than the price tag is one factor that will actually affect everyone’s experience: its architecture. Here’s a look at how it will likely work.

If you like the iPhone’s macro camera, you’ll love the Sandmarc macro lens Back in 2021, Apple introduced a new iPhone camera capability in the form of a new macro lens option with the ultrawide camera. It was exclusive to the Pro models until last year when it was extended across the iPhone 16 and 17 range.
As a built-in feature, it’s pretty impressive, but it doesn’t come close to the razor-thin depth of field you get with a dedicated macro lens. But a $150 snap-on iPhone lens gives you something remarkably close to this …

The MacRumors Show: AirPods Pro 3 and What's Coming Next On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the AirPods Pro 3 and the future of the AirPods lineup as a whole.
Subscribe to The MacRumors Show YouTube channel for more videos
Apple introduced the AirPods Pro 3 in September, featuring a more refined design, improved active noise cancelation (ANC), enhanced sound quality, foam ear tips in five sizes, and heart rate monitoring for workouts. After using the AirPods Pro 3 for two months, we talk through our experience with the noticeably different fit, improved ANC, and more.
We also discuss the reports from some users who are experiencing an ongoing static issue with the AirPods Pro 3. Apple does seem to be replacing affected units for customers who are bothered by the noise, which appears to be audible when ANC is active but no sound is playing. Other users have been hearing a high-pitched whine when on airplanes, which could be related to pressure. Not all AirPods Pro 3 units are experiencing the issue, but it sounds like Apple is investigating.
Looking to the future, another version of the AirPods Pro 3 are expected to launch next year featuring infrared cameras for gesture controls and improved Vision Pro integration. This model is likely to be a more premium offering available alongside the current model at a higher price point.
Apple is believed to be working on a next-generation H3 chip for future AirPods models. The AirPods 5 are in development, with two models just like the current version.
The AirPods Max 2 are also in the works, touting a lighter design and likely a newer chip with features that are now noticeably absent from the device such as adaptive transparency and Siri commands. They are reportedly due to enter mass production in 2027 at the earliest.

Missed Apple's AirTag Pricing Error? Amazon Still Has the 4-Pack for $64.99 This morning, Apple's website had a crazy price on the AirTag 4-Pack, and it appears that it was too good to be true. If you want a reliable and guaranteed discount on the AirTag 4-Pack, Amazon has the accessory for $64.99, down from $99.00, which is an all-time low price if you exclude this morning's situation at Apple.
Note: MacRumors is an affiliate partner with Amazon. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may receive a small payment, which helps us keep the site running.
With Apple reverting the AirTag price to its original $99.00 price tag, and multiple customers reporting that their orders now show a price of $99.00, it appears that the discount won't be honored for most people. Amazon's sale is a guaranteed $34 discount and same-day shipping is available for many cities in the United States.
$34 OFFAirTag 4-Pack for $64.99
Amazon also has the AirTag 1-Pack for $24.00, down from $29.00. This is not the best price we've ever seen on this version of the accessory, so we recommend looking toward the 4-Pack option to maximize your savings.

Apple's Website Lists AirTag 4-Pack at Shockingly Low Price Apple's online store in the U.S. is suddenly offering a pack of four AirTags for just $29, which is the same price that it charges for a single AirTag.
This is likely a pricing error, and it is unclear if orders will be fulfilled. Apple has not discounted the AirTag four-pack in any other countries that we checked.
Delivery estimates are already pushing into late November to early December, suggesting that many customers are attempting to take advantage of the deal.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple was planning to release an AirTag 2 in mid-2025, but that did not happen. The current AirTag was released in April 2021.
For those unfamiliar with the AirTag, it is a Bluetooth accessory that you can attach to items like a backpack and keys, and you can then track the location of those items in the Find My app across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and iCloud.com. Similar item trackers are sold by brands like Tile, Samsung, Chipolo, and Pebblebee.Tag: AirTagThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple TV suffers embarrassing outage as ‘Pluribus’ launches Macworld
After months of buildup and an omnipresent advertising campaign, Apple’s much-anticipated new show Pluribus made its debut on the company’s TV streaming service Thursday night. And the service promptly suffered a major outage across the U.S. and Canada.
As reported by Bloomberg and others, users started to report that the service had crashed at around 10:30 p.m. ET, shortly after Apple made the first two episodes of the show available to stream. There were almost 13,000 reports on Downdetector before Apple acknowledged the problem on its System Status page. Reports say the outage was brief, lasting less than an hour.
At the time of writing, that page has returned to all green. But there remains a Resolved Outage note on Apple TV (simply saying “Some users were affected; users experienced a problem with Apple TV” between 10:29 and 11.38 p.m.), as well as on Apple Music and Apple Arcade, which also went down at the same time. Social media reports indicated that the outage was widespread.
Pluribus is the work of Vince Gilligan, who created Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and stars Rhea Seehorn from the latter show. It’s one of the highest-profile offerings to appear on Apple TV, so this outage couldn’t have come at a worse time. It isn’t clear what went wrong on a technical level, though it’s possible Apple’s servers simply weren’t ready for the level of demand.

iPhone 18 Lineup Said to Feature 24MP Front-Facing Cameras All flagship models in Apple's next-generation iPhone 18 lineup will be equipped with a 24-megapixel front facing camera, up from 18 megapixels on iPhone 17 models, according to the latest JP Morgan forecast seen by MacRumors.
A 24-megapixel front-facing camera was rumored for all iPhone 17 models by multiple sources, but ultimately the rumor never came to pass.
That said, the 18-megapixel front-facing camera found on all iPhone 17 models is still a significant update, so a jump to 24 megapixels would certainly be noteworthy, assuming the report is correct. It would mean that the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air 2, and Apple's first foldable iPhone would be able to deliver sharper, more detailed selfies and improved portrait accuracy.
Apple calls its selfie camera on iPhone 17 devices the "Center Stage" front camera, and it has the first square camera sensor on an iPhone. The square sensor provides a wider field of view that can capture more detail, so you can now take a portrait or landscape selfie while holding your phone vertically.
The JP Morgan report also indicates that Apple's foldable iPhone will feature an industry-first 24-megapixel under-screen camera integrated into the device's inner display. Meanwhile, the budget second-generation iPhone 17e and third-generation iPhone 18e will both reportedly continue to use a 12-megapixel front-facing camera.
Starting in 2026, Apple will reportedly split its iPhone lineup between fall and spring launches. The second-generation iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable iPhone will launch in the second half of 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e won't launch until spring 2027.Related Roundup: iPhone 18Tag: J.P. Unless you’re on a long trip the chances are that most of your car journeys are relatively short and often hurried affairs: the school run, a dash to the shops, an office commute. As such the time you have in the car for charging your phone is likely brief—therefore the faster the charger, the more juice you can squeeze into your phone, ready for the next charger-less stage of the day.
Of course, you should have charged your phone before you got in your car, right, but sadly the everyday got in the way and now you need as many percentage points of battery life as you can get into your iPhone before it’s back in your pocket.
Speed means power
The fastest magnetic wireless iPhone car charger available right now is the Anker Prime Wireless Car Charger that utilizes the latest Qi 2.2 wireless charging standard to reach the top 25W output. Read: Which wireless technology is best for your iPhone.
That compares to 15W for certified wireless MagSafe and Qi2 chargers and a mere 7.5W for “MagSafe Compatible” chargers.
25W should in practice get your iPhone up to a 50% charge in just over half an hour, compared to 45 minutes for 15W, and well over an hour for the older and cheaper chargers at 7.5W.
The new 25W wireless chargers put out so much energy that maintaining power output requires dedicated active cooling. The Anker Prime uses the fancy sounding Thermoelectric Cooling (TEC) system to keep your iPhone below 95°F (35°C) while charging. Grills circle the top of the charging pad. Lower temperatures help protect your battery and reduce long-term wear.
25W wireless charging works with only the iPhone 16 and later; older iPhones can use the same charger but at a more limited 15W of power. Anker claims that even 15W-only (iPhone 15 and older) phones charge cooler and more efficiently with the charger’s TEC system.

Design
The design of the Anker Prime Car Charger isn’t wildly different to the slower alternatives. It’s compact at 3.66 x 2.36 x 3.46 inches (9.3 x 6 x 8.8cm) and the charging pad is plenty big enough to be attached magnetically.
A ball joint holder’s tail hook clips onto an air vent—you spin the body to determine how much of the clip you need protruding—and can be angled at a 32-degree adjustable tilt. The pad can be horizontally rotated 360 degrees.
Note that the Anker Prime is not compatible with Tesla or Mercedes-Benz vehicles, or with cars that lack vent blades or use nonstandard vent designs, such as round air vents. The first car we tried it in was a Mini and the placement of the vents doesn’t allow for a car charger such as this one—indeed you’ll need a separate mount for some cars. Compatible vent blade depths must be between 10 mm and 24 mm for optimal grip. See image below for more on vent compatibility.
Anker
The USB-C port is placed at the base of the unit. Here you connect the included 3.3-foot (1m) cable, which itself is powered by the 45W dual-port charger that plugs into the power outlet (aka cigarette lighter port) in the car. The other port is legacy USB-A that can output at 12W.
Handily, the cable comes with an organizer and holders to keep your driving space tidy from stray cables. You’ll have to tidy up your hurried snack wrappers and kids’ coloring books yourself.
The 13N magnet does a good job of keeping the device secure while still being able to remove it at the end of your drive without ripping the holder out of the vent.
To ensure you have the charging properly set, the charger’s ambient light turns on for 30 seconds at power-on and remains continuously lit during charging.Anker
Price
The Anker Prime Wireless Car Charger is priced at $89.99 / £79.99, which puts it at the high-end of the many wireless car chargers on the market, but remember that it’s by far the fastest, and the package includes the power outlet charger and cable.
Anker
Should I buy the Anker Prime 25W Wireless Car Charger
If in-car charging speed is of vital importance to you, the 25W Anker Prime is the fastest wireless car charger for iPhones that you’ll find. It’s sturdy and neat and tidy with cable holders included, and a powerful dual-port USB charger along for the ride too.

iPhone Fold to Feature Industry-First 24MP Under-Display Camera Apple's first foldable iPhone will feature an industry-first 24-megapixel under-screen camera built into the inner display, according to the latest JP Morgan forecast seen by MacRumors.
We've previously heard rumors that Apple will use an under-display camera for the book-style foldable's inner display, but this is the first reference to the camera's proposed megapixel count.
Under-display camera technology has been used on some Android phones, but they tend to have lower resolution sensors (4 or 8 megapixels, for example) because the image quality suffers due to being behind display layers.
The jump to a 24-megapixel camera (with six plastic lens elements, per the report) would therefore be a significant technological advance, potentially resulting in clearer, sharper images with more detail. The detail suggests Apple has achieved a breakthrough in greatly improving light transmittance and image quality compared to previous designs.
However, the JP Morgan forecast also suggests Apple has made some compromises to keep the foldable device compact, such as a lack of LiDAR and optical image stabilization.
Apple's foldable iPhone is expected to include a dual-lens rear camera, with a front-facing camera for both folded and unfolded states, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman recently corroborated reports that the device will have four cameras consisting of one front camera, one inner camera, and two rear cameras. Prolific Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station claims that the rear dual lenses will be 48 megapixels each.
Other sources have claimed that the inner display features an under-screen camera, while the outer display – in the device's folded state – will have a punch-hole camera. Apple is reportedly relying on Touch ID integrated into the side button instead of Face ID for biometric authentication.
Gurman has said he expects the device to be launched next year in the fall season. However, Japan's Mizuho Securities banking firm has suggested a postponement to 2027 could still happen because of Apple taking longer to decide on key design elements such as the hinge.Tags: Foldable iPhone, J.P. Moonlock review: We put MacPaw’s new antivirus suite to work Macworld
At a glanceExpert's Rating
Pros
Excellent viral and malware protection and detection
Good purchase options
Access to learning tools and YouTube links
Cons
Security Advisor module lacks functionality
Menus don’t offer enough clarity
sScan scheduler only allowing for 15-minute increments
VPN auto-connects to the closest server
Our Verdict
Moonlock isn’t perfect, and the user interface and menu systems could use a bit of an overhaul, but what’s present in terms of malware detection and removal, backed by some good learning tools, makes it a viable option for Mac users who want good protection with minimal fuss. This, combined with improved purchase options and a 7-day free trial, makes it worth your Consideration.

Ukrainian developer MacPaw has had an interesting progression over the years in the Mac utility market. Best known for CleanMyMac, it first expanded that to include antiviral/anti-malware protection to provide an overall system cleanup utility. Now MacPaw has spun off its antiviral/anti-malware elements into Moonlock, a new product focusing on protecting Mac users from malware and the other dangers of being online.
Like its CleanMyMac incarnations, Moonlock, which requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later to install and run, is centered around a stylish user interface and is easy to download and set up, the installer asking for full disk access permission as part of the process.
The software is divided into several modules (Home, Malware Scanner, VPN, Network Inspector, System Protection, and Security Advisor), each with its own customizable elements.
Straight from the get-go, Moonlock functions both as an instructional tool as well as a utility, the Home module offering quick access to the suite’s assorted tools while also providing YouTube links to explain potential vulnerabilities such as malware, typosquatting, secure email, email encryption, secure passwords, and the types of malware that can be used to take advantage of a user. A vertical column down the left side of the window offers one-click access to the other modules as well.
As expected, the Malware Scanner module functions as Moonlock’s core utility, the tool offering three scan types (Quick Scan, Balanced Scan, and Deep Scan), the modes trading scanning speed for in-depth analysis of what might be on your Mac’s internal hard drives or external volumes.
The Moonlock scanner found and blocked several threats.Foundry
Although not well-explained in the menus, the Deep Scan can scan external volumes, and it’s easy to perform functions such as creating whitelists of files to avoid scanning, scheduling a scan, scanning .zip and .dmg files, and setting up active protection against potential malware.
Where the scanning itself is concerned, the results are impressive, and Moonlock’s antiviral/anti-malware approach caught just about everything that was thrown at it from the sample library.
The application was able to perform a Deep Scan of my MacBook Pro’s solid-state drive and an external USB volume in about an hour, and with Active Protection on, it was able to detect and delete malware before I could attempt to install it.
While Moonlock was able to block just about everything and combined well with macOS’ Gatekeeper and Xprotect system functions, there were occasions where malware could have been installed, provided you bypassed several warning screens to allow the function to run.
Moonlock also includes a VPN feature, which, though not as robust as a dedicated client, is capable, even if it automatically connects to the closest access point as opposed to opting for geolocation and letting you pick the country your masked IP address is coming from. Even so, the client is brisk, speedy, and it’s easy enough to disconnect and pick your preferred country of origin as needed.
The Network Inspector module caught me a bit off guard in that it allows you to choose regions and countries to block internet traffic from, as opposed to scanning your local network and pointing out potential weak points and vulnerabilities. I’ve never seen this approach before, and it of course makes sense from a defensive posture, as well as the fact that MacPaw, a Ukrainian developer, is now in its third year of a war against Russia, and preventing hacking from outside nations and regions makes sense to them.
Block regions know for hacking.Foundry
The System Protection module proved interesting in that it quickly scans your Mac’s operating system, determines where you might be vulnerable, and then opens up a list of advice and shortcuts as to how to take steps to use your Mac and prevent intrusion more effectively. The steps range from turning off your Mac’s display when the computer is inactive to turning on macOS’ Gatekeeper feature to improving your Wi-Fi protection, to turning off automatic Bluetooth connections, and offer quick links to the Settings panes to make these changes.
Moonlock’s Security Advisor module is as it’s name suggests an advisor and not a tool. Case in point, the module functions as a billboard of warnings and steps to take to prevent intrusion, as opposed to tools to effect these changes. Yes, it’s good to learn what to do, but this felt as if I’d wandered into an advice column and not a significant module of a commercial piece of software.
The Security Advisor advises.Foundry
While Moonlock has a lot going for it, there are still some bugs to iron out, and a lot of it comes from the overly flashy user interface elements, which MacPaw is known for.
The Malware Scanner module is impressive, but you have to dig through various menus to see the volume and folder where the malware infection that was caught and quarantined was located. This is also the same module that could use an estimated time remaining countdown timer for its tasks, which would be appreciated.
The scheduler function, though reliable, only allows you to schedule scans every 15 minutes, a more customizable schedule would be welcome.
It would be nice to have a little more customization.Foundry
Finally, it feels as if the menus don’t explain each module’s functions as well as they could. It took a little trial and error to determine that the Deep Scan scanning mode could address an external volume as opposed to an easier user interface to point this out or a handy guide tip that suggested dragging and dropping the external volume to initiate a scan.
What’s present in Moonlock is good, if a bit rough around the edges, and the Moonlock antiviral/anti-malware engine doesn’t miss a beat, but MacPaw needs to sort out its menus and remember that flashy animations driven by a talented graphics department don’t replace explanatory ease of use.
Still, it’s nice to see the company spin Moonlock off into its own thing as opposed to heaping more features onto CleanMyMac. Outside of the fact that the menu system could be a bit more transparent to the user, and the Security Advisor module feels more like a PSA than a toolset, there’s something good here, and it’s worth considering.
Moonlock is available in subscription-based monthly, annual, or one-time payments. A 7-day free trial is also available, although you’ll have to send along your payment information, which will be charged at the end of the trial period if you don’t cancel in time.
Should you buy Moonlock from MacPaw?
MacPaw offers a strong antiviral/anti-malware candidate with Moonlock to the point that its malware detection engine performs exceptionally well, and the Active Protection feature was able to stop some threats before they could be installed and executed. The inclusion of instructional resources makes an effort to teach less-technical users as to why certain security settings matter, and the additional purchase options, such as one-time purchasing, are a nice addition.
Moonlock did a good job detecting and quarantining malware.Foundry
Moonlock does feel like a 1.0 release in spots. The Security Advisor module functions more as an informational PSA than an actual toolset, and it feels as if certain options and details are buried under a plethora of flashy menus. Still, there’s a 7-day free trial that’s worth your time and we recommend giving it a spin.
What Mac owners need to know about buying Network Attached Storage Adding storage to your home network will give you more than just a place to keep your Mac backups. Here's what to know when buying network-attached storage.NAS buyers guide: Buying a NAS can be very helpful for your storage needs.Apple device users will be very aware of storage costs for their hardware. Configuring more storage on an iPhone, an iPad, or a Mac costs quite a lot, and it's something you can't directly upgrade in the future.External drives are certainly one answer. If an entire family is involved, or there are lots of devices needing access to that data, getting network-attached storage (NAS) is probably the better idea. iPhone 18 Pro to get smaller hole punch for selfie and Face ID camera Previous claims of an under-display Face ID and camera for the iPhone 18 Pro have been scaled back, suggesting now that the 2026 flagship iPhone may only have a smaller display hole. The Digital Island could shrink considerably for the iPhone 18Regular and reasonably — if sporadically — accurate leaker Digital Chat Station has once more claimed to have reports about the display on the iPhone 18 Pro. Previously he or she has maintained that the current Dynamic Island will go, and be replaced by an under-display camera and Face ID system. Now, writing on the Chinese social media site Weibo, Digital Chat Station says that Apple is considering a smaller hole-in-active-area (HIAA). This is a precision-drilled hole in the display, used to give the camera an unobstructed field of view. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
Can’t add Apple ID on Xcode 16.2 (macOS on MacBook Air 2018) — any fix? Hi everyone, I’m using a MacBook Air (2018), and since the macOS can’t run the latest Xcode, I’m using Xcode 16.2. However, when I try to add my Apple ID in Xcode → Settings → Accounts, it won’t add or just fails silently. I just want to run my own app on my iPhone, not […]
iPhone 18 Pro Said to Feature Smaller Display Hole for Front Camera Apple is testing new camera miniaturization technology to reduce the size of the front-facing camera on next year's iPhone 18 Pro models, claims a Chinese leaker.
According to Digital Chat Station, a Weibo account with more than three million followers, Apple is testing a single HIIA (hole-in-active-area) hole punch for the front-facing camera, which is currently located within the Dynamic Island.
HIAA is a display manufacturing technique developed by Samsung and other display makers that integrates front-facing cameras into OLED panels without taking up too much of the active screen. The technique involves precisely drilling a small hole within the active pixel area using laser micro-drilling, resulting in a single ultra-compact aperture opening.
This isn't the first time Digital Chat Station has claimed Apple is testing HIAA technology for the iPhone 18 Pro models. Back in May, they said Apple was using it in conjunction with under-display Face ID technology. These comments came on the back of a report by The Information that also said under-screen Face ID was on the cards, and that Apple intends to position the pinhole for the front-facing camera in the top-left corner of the screen.
Today's report, however, is more ambiguous. The leaker says that as a result of using HIAA technology, the device's "screen shape will change" owing to the smaller camera hole design, but it's not entirely clear if this means the front camera will move position, or that it will remain part of a smaller Dynamic Island. There is also no mention of under-display Face ID.
More recent reports appear to corroborate claims that the iPhone 18 Pro models will have a smaller Dynamic Island, so this could be a better interpretation of Digital Chat Station's latest information.
In addition to Apple's use of HIAA, the leaker reiterated other previously shared details, including Apple's use of a rear lens with variable aperture, the same camera plateau design as the iPhone 17 Pro, and a "transparent design" for the Ceramic Shield area for MagSafe charging. Lastly, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is said to feature a "steel-shell battery" – likely a reference to a stainless steel vapor chamber cooling system that has previously been rumored.
The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, the next iPhone Air, and a foldable iPhone are all expected to come out in September 2026, while the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e could follow in spring 2027, as part of a new split-cycle launch strategy for Apple.Related Roundup: iPhone 18Tag: Digital Chat StationRelated Forum: iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
